Home Care in Essex 475 home care agencies · 270 rated Good by CQC

Support delivered inside a person's own home is what all 475 home care agencies listed for Essex have in common, though very little else about them is identical. Ratings across that group include Outstanding and Good, alongside agencies rated Requires Improvement and others holding no rating because the Care Quality Commission has not yet inspected them. Essex County Council is responsible for the care needs assessment that establishes what help is required and how often, and for the financial assessment that determines how much of the cost is met from public funds rather than by the family. Either can be requested regardless of income or savings. Because agencies build their rounds around geography, registration in the county is no guarantee that a particular street is covered, so ask that question before anything else. Then open the profile of each agency still under consideration, read the inspection report that lies behind its rating, and let the findings there decide which one you approach first.

Helping Hands Enfield supports people in their own homes in Waltham Abbey and across the surrounding area. We work with older people, people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. Staying at home is what nearly everyone wants, and the question is usually what it would take to make that workable. Sometimes the answer is modest, a single morning call to help someone wash and dress and get the day started. Sometimes it is several visits a day covering personal care, medication, meals and company, or longer sits so that a family carer can go out without worrying. We begin by asking what the person wants help with, which is not always what a referral says. People are often very clear about what they can still manage perfectly well and would rather we left to them, and respecting that is part of the job. Continuity matters a great deal, especially where dementia or autism is involved. A familiar carer who knows the routine, the house and the person makes a visit work in a way a stranger cannot. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us to talk things through.

    • Home Care

We are a home care agency in Harlow, Essex, supporting people in their own homes across the town and the surrounding area. Most of our work is with older adults, a good number living with dementia. We also support younger adults and people with a physical disability. What people come to us for is usually practical and immediate. Help getting up, washed and dressed. Medicines prompted or given. A hot meal. Help to move safely about the house, sometimes with equipment. Shopping and laundry. Somebody noticing quietly whether things are getting worse. Home care stands or falls on reliability, so that is where we concentrate. Arriving when we said. Sending workers who have been to the house before. Ringing the family when something is not right rather than leaving a note on the table. None of it is clever, and all of it is the difference between support that helps and support that adds to the worry. Where dementia is involved we take our lead from the household, because the family already knows the triggers, the words that work and the hour of the day that is hard. We have not yet had a full inspection by the Care Quality Commission, so there is no rating to point you at. Call us and judge us on the visit and the conversation.

Mandalay is a home care agency based in Saffron Walden, supporting people in their own homes across this part of Essex. We work with adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. Our work is less about personal care tasks and more about making an ordinary life workable. Getting to college, work or activities. Running a household. Managing money, appointments and the paperwork that piles up. Keeping up with family and friends. For a lot of the people we support, having somebody reliable who turns up and who knows them is what holds the week together. Support is planned around what each person wants to be able to do rather than around risk alone. Where someone needs a great deal of help, we still look for the parts they can take on, because independence slips away quietly unless it is actively protected. We learn how each person communicates, including those who use little or no speech, and we adapt to them. Predictability, noise and sensory needs all shape how good a day goes, and we treat those as part of the support rather than as detail. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say that plainly. We know the areas identified, there is work under way, and we are happy to discuss it with anyone considering us. Please ring and ask us directly.

GENPRIDE is a home care agency in Colchester, supporting people in their own homes across the town and the surrounding parts of Essex. We work with older people, people living with dementia, adults with a physical disability and younger adults. Nearly everyone who contacts us wants the same thing, which is to stay where they are. Our job is to make that sensible rather than to take anything over. Depending on the person that could be a single morning call to help with washing and dressing, several visits a day covering personal care, medication, meals and company, or a longer sit so a family carer can get out for a few hours. We begin by asking what help is actually wanted, which is not always what a referral form says. People are usually clear about what they can still manage and would rather keep doing, and respecting that is as much the job as anything we take on. Where somebody has a physical disability, we think properly about equipment, moving and handling, and how much help to offer, because being helped more than you want is its own kind of loss. Continuity is where we put our effort. A familiar carer who knows the house, the routine and the person makes a visit work in a way nobody new can, and that is most true where dementia is involved. Beaumont Home Care is based in Ingatestone and supports people in their own homes across this part of Essex. We work with older people, people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment, younger adults and people living with eating disorders. We take on a broad range of need on purpose. People's circumstances rarely stay neatly in one category, and being able to keep supporting somebody as things change matters more than tidy specialisms. Our visits cover personal care, support with medication, meals, help around the house and getting out and about. For younger adults and for people with a learning disability, the work is often less about personal care and more about making an ordinary week workable. Alongside the tasks runs the quieter part of the job, which is noticing. Someone eating less, a sore area starting, a person who has gone quiet. A carer who visits regularly sees that long before a review would, which is why we keep the same carers with the same people. Where we support somebody living with an eating disorder, we work without lecturing and alongside the clinicians involved. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. • Home Care

Ajaess supports people in their own homes in Colchester and across this part of Essex. We work with older people, people living with dementia and adults with a physical disability. We have kept our focus fairly narrow on purpose. Doing a smaller number of things properly beats spreading ourselves thin, and most of the people who contact us want the same thing, which is enough support to carry on living where they are. Depending on what is needed, that could be one call each morning to help somebody wash, dress and get the day started, several visits a day covering personal care, medication, meals and company, or a longer sit so a family carer can have a few hours to themselves. We begin by asking what help is actually wanted rather than working from a form. People are usually very clear about what they can still manage and would rather keep doing for themselves, and respecting that is as much the job as the tasks we take on. With dementia, continuity is not a nice extra. A carer the person recognises, arriving at roughly the time they expect, achieves far more in half an hour than a stranger could in twice that. Where somebody has a physical disability we think properly about equipment and about not helping more than is wanted. Please ring us to talk things through.

Depending on what is needed, that could be one call each morning to help somebody wash, dress and get the day started, several visits a day covering personal care, medication, meals and company, or longer periods of support where needs are more constant. The first conversation is where the work really starts. We want to know how the day usually runs, what has become difficult, and what the person can still do perfectly well and would rather we left to them. People tend to be very clear about that, and respecting it is as much the job as the tasks we take on. For younger adults, our work is often less about personal care and more about keeping an ordinary week on track, from appointments and paperwork to getting out to work or study. Freeman Court in Chelmsford, run by Radis Community Care, provides care and support to people living in their own homes here. We work with older people, people living with dementia, people living with mental ill health, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. People here have their own front doors, and that is the point. Our support is arranged around how somebody wants to live rather than around a timetable, and we keep asking whether we are doing more than is wanted, because independence slips away quietly if nobody is protecting it. Support covers personal care, help with medication, meals, assistance getting about, and the practical business of running a home. For some people it is a short call each morning. For others it is a good deal more, and because we are on site we can respond when something changes rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit. Having company close at hand while keeping your own space suits a lot of people, particularly those who have found living alone isolating but who do not want to give up their independence. Where sight or hearing is reduced, we adapt how we communicate. With dementia, familiar faces and a predictable day do most of the work. Please get in touch to talk things through.

Faiths Care provides care and support to people in their own homes in Colchester and the surrounding part of Essex. We work with older people and with younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, learning disabilities and autism, physical disabilities, and sight and hearing loss. We begin with a visit at home, because what somebody needs is obvious in their own kitchen and seldom obvious on a form. What we want to understand is how the household runs, who is already helping, what the person manages perfectly well without us and where help would make a real difference. The plan comes out of that conversation and belongs to the person to change. Support may be a single daily call for personal care and medication, several visits covering meals, housework, shopping and company, or longer stretches for somebody who should not be alone for long. Where somebody communicates in their own way we learn it and write it down, so the whole team responds alike rather than each carer improvising. Continuity is what families notice most, so we keep rounds tight and local, send the same carers wherever we can, and say in advance when a new face is coming. Our carers are checked, trained and supervised. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we are glad to talk things through without obligation.

Prestige Healthcare 247 provides care and support to people in their own homes in Chelmsford and the surrounding part of Essex. We work with older people and with younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, mental health needs and physical disabilities. Support is worked out at home with the person and whoever they want present, not decided in advance. For some people a single short call each day is enough, perhaps to help with washing and dressing or to make sure medication has been taken. For others we come several times, with meals, company, help around the house and support to get out and about. The plan is agreed together and changes when life changes. Reliability is what makes care at home work. Arriving at the agreed time. Staying the full visit instead of rushing off. Sending carers the person already knows. Ringing a family before they have to ring us. We keep rounds tight and local so those are promises we can keep. Where somebody is living with dementia we pay close attention to timing and familiar faces. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we try to be steady and predictable. Where there is a physical disability we think about equipment, layout and timing. We are registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission.

Given the range of needs we meet, training is practical rather than a formality. Supporting an autistic person, supporting somebody in the later stages of dementia and supporting somebody with poor sight each call for different knowledge, and our carers have it before they go out. We work with older people and with younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, mental health needs, physical disabilities, and sight and hearing loss. We begin with a visit at home and a straightforward conversation about what would actually help, and about what somebody intends to carry on doing for themselves, because support that takes over more than it needs to does more harm than good. The plan is agreed together and changes as life changes. Support may be a single short call each day, several visits for personal care, medication, meals, housework and company, or longer stretches for somebody who should not be alone. Where somebody has a physical disability we pay attention to the mechanics of the house, since whether a frame is within reach or help arrives at the right moment decides a great deal. Where there is sensory loss we think about lighting, contrast and hearing aids that have actually been checked. For people living with dementia, familiarity and timing do more good than anything else, so we keep teams small and say in advance when a new carer is coming. Our carers come to you, and the visit covers whatever has been agreed, from help getting washed and dressed to medication, meals, shopping, housework, getting out to appointments or simply company and conversation. Most of the people we visit are older, and we also support younger adults. Everything begins with a proper conversation in your own home about your routine, your preferences and where help would make the biggest difference. We write the plan from that and review it honestly as circumstances change in either direction. If somebody has got their confidence back and needs less from us, we would rather say so than keep visits running out of habit. We cover a village and rural area, so we understand the practical business of getting to people here and we plan our rounds so that the times we promise are times we can actually keep. Keeping the same carers visiting the same people is something we protect, because familiarity does more good than almost anything else we can offer, and it means changes get noticed early by somebody who knows what normal looks like. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat it as the standard we are expected to hold rather than something to advertise. Kinect provides care at home for people in Rayleigh and across this part of Essex. Our carers visit people in their own houses, helping with the parts of the day that have become difficult while leaving the rest well alone. The people we support include older people, many of them living with dementia, as well as younger adults, people with a learning disability or autism, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and people working through difficulties with alcohol or drugs. Because the range is wide, we take matching seriously. The right carer for one person is not the right carer for another, and we would rather spend time getting that fit correct at the start than patch it up later. Visits might involve personal care and medication, cooking, shopping and housework, support to get out into the community, or company for somebody who sees very few people in a week. Some people need one short call a day and others need several or support overnight. We keep teams small and consistent, and we aim to arrive when we said we would. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat it as the standard we are expected to hold rather than an achievement to display, and we keep asking the people we visit whether we are doing what we promised. Five Stars Care provides support at home for people in Colchester and the surrounding part of Essex. Our carers visit people where they live, helping with the parts of the day that have become difficult while leaving the rest well alone. Most of the people we visit are older and many are living with dementia. We also support younger adults. Everything begins with a proper conversation in your own home about your routine, your preferences and what you would rather carry on managing yourself. We write the plan from your answers and review it honestly as things change in either direction. If somebody has got their confidence back and needs less from us, we would rather say so than keep visits running out of habit. Visits can cover personal care, help with medication, cooking a meal, shopping and housework, getting out to appointments, or simply company for somebody who sees very few people in a week. We keep care teams small so the same faces turn up, because being greeted by somebody you know changes the character of the whole visit, and for a person living with dementia it matters even more. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat it as the standard we are expected to hold rather than something to advertise, and we keep asking the people we visit and their families whether we are doing what we promised. If you would like to talk about care at home in this area, please get in touch.

Trends Healthcare Chelmsford provides support at home for people in Chelmsford and the surrounding part of Essex. Our carers visit people where they live, and the support is built around what each person actually wants from it. We work with people living with dementia, people with a learning disability or autism, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss and people managing mental health conditions. That is a broad range and we do not pretend one approach suits everybody, so we spend proper time at the start understanding how somebody lives, what they want help with and what they would rather keep doing themselves. We then think carefully about which carer suits which person, since the right match makes far more difference than anything written in a plan. Support might mean personal care and medication, or cooking, shopping and housework, or help getting out to work, college or an activity, or company for somebody who sees very few people in a week. We keep teams small so that familiar carers visit the same people, and we take punctuality seriously, since a visit that arrives late has already gone wrong. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and we are glad to be asked about our training, our staffing and how we deal with concerns. You should know who to ring and get a straight answer when you do. If you would like to talk about support at home in this area, please get in touch.

Prime Care Domiciliary Essex supports people in their own homes in Colchester and the surrounding area. We work with older people and with younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, learning disabilities and autism, mental health needs, physical disabilities, and sight and hearing loss. We assess at home, with whoever the person wants present, and the conversation is as much about what somebody intends to keep doing for themselves as about what they need from us. The plan is agreed rather than issued and it changes when circumstances do. Support may be a single short call each day, visits at several points for personal care, medication, meals and company, or longer stretches for somebody who should not be alone. Across that spread of needs, training is a practical matter. A carer supporting an autistic person, one supporting somebody in the later stages of dementia and one supporting somebody with poor sight each need different knowledge, and ours have it before they go out to anybody. We hold onto continuity as firmly as the rota allows and tell people in advance when a new carer is coming. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

    • Home Care

Gemstone Care supports adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults in their own homes in Loughton and the surrounding part of Essex. What our support is for is widening somebody's life rather than managing it. That means asking how a person wants things done and then doing it their way, even when another way would be quicker for us, and spending time alongside somebody while they do a thing themselves rather than doing it on their behalf. We would far rather spend an hour helping a person learn something than ten minutes doing it for them. Support covers the ordinary business of a life: cooking, shopping, managing money and bills, keeping appointments, travelling about, getting to work or college, keeping in touch with family and friends, and personal care and medication where that is needed. How much we do and how much we stand back is agreed with the person and revisited as they move forward. Communication is the foundation. Not everybody we support uses speech, and learning how an individual shows what they want, and what they refuse, comes before every other decision. We keep teams small so the same people come back. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding overall.

We keep our rounds local so those are promises we can actually keep. Where somebody is living with dementia we pay close attention to timing and familiar faces. Where there is a physical disability or sensory loss we think about equipment, lighting, contrast and working hearing aids. • Home Care

At Forever Unique Care, we provide home care support to people living in Basildon and the surrounding areas of Essex. We work with older adults, younger adults, and people who simply need a bit of extra help to stay comfortable and independent in their own homes. We understand that inviting someone into your home is a big decision, and we do not take that trust lightly. Our approach is straightforward: we listen carefully to what each person needs, and we build support around their life rather than asking them to fit around ours. Whether someone needs help with daily routines, personal care, or companionship, we aim to make sure that support feels natural and unobtrusive. Home care works best when there is genuine consistency. We try hard to make sure that the people we support see familiar faces, and that they feel genuinely known rather than just looked after. That kind of continuity matters, particularly for older people or younger adults who may be navigating complex or changing circumstances. We are based in Basildon, and being a local agency means something to us. We know this area, and we want to be a care provider that families in this community can rely on without hesitation. When things change, as they often do in care, we want to be responsive and easy to reach rather than distant or difficult to contact. Our work is currently unrated by the Care Quality Commission as we are in the earlier stages of our registration, but we welcome the scrutiny that regulation brings and are committed to meeting the standards expected of a responsible care provider. If you would like to find out whether we could support you or someone you care about, we would be very happy to have a conversation and answer any questions you might have.

Arranging and funding home care in Essex

What the assessment establishes

Funding and provider choice are separate decisions, and they are easier taken in that order. A care needs assessment sets out what someone can manage alone, what they cannot, and what support would close the gap, and anyone who appears to need care is entitled to one whatever their savings. Essex County Council carries out that assessment and the financial assessment that follows, and arranges funded support where a person qualifies. The written outcome is useful even to families who expect to pay for everything themselves, because it converts a vague sense that something must change into a specific list of visits and tasks that an agency can quote against. A relative providing unpaid support can ask for a carer's assessment in their own right at the same time.

The cost of an hour

Care at home is priced by the hour, with shorter calls charged proportionately and higher rates usual at weekends, on bank holidays and through the night. Where support is funded, the national means test decides the contribution, and anyone holding capital above the upper threshold arranges and pays for care privately. Funded support may arrive as an arranged service or as a direct payment, which hands you the choice of agency and the shape of the rota. Attendance allowance sits outside the means test altogether and is worth claiming whatever else is in place. Before agreeing a start date, ask for a full rate card in writing, including travel charges, bank holiday rates and the notice period on both sides.

Choosing between home care agencies in Essex

Whether the rounds actually reach the door

An agency registered to work in Essex is not necessarily an agency that will travel to your relative's address, because rounds are built around clusters of clients and travel time between them. Ask about coverage and available time slots in the very first call, since an agency that can only offer a late morning visit when help is needed at seven in the morning is not a real option however well it is rated. Work out in advance how many calls a day are needed, at what times, and what has to happen during each one. That preparation turns a listing of 475 agencies into a shortlist of a few.

Reading an inspection report on an agency

The Care Quality Commission inspects a home care agency as an organisation rather than as a building, so its rating reflects recruitment and training, medication handling, how calls are scheduled and covered, and how complaints are answered. Agencies here hold Outstanding, Good and Requires Improvement ratings, and some carry none at all because they registered too recently to be inspected. An unrated agency is not automatically a weak one, but there is no independent judgement to lean on, so ask harder questions and request references. Where a report exists, the sections on safety and responsiveness usually tell you more than the overall word.

The questions that draw out honest answers

Ask how many different carers will visit across a typical fortnight, because continuity affects daily life more than anything printed in a brochure. Ask what happens when a carer is delayed or off sick, and whether anyone tells the family. Ask how visits are logged, whether relatives can see those records, and how medication support is signed off. Ask how a package can be increased if needs change, and how quickly. An agency confident in its own service answers all of that without hesitation.

Frequently asked questions about home care in Essex

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Essex?

Contact the adult social care team at Essex County Council and ask for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one regardless of income or savings, and you can make the request on a relative's behalf. A practitioner will look at daily tasks, mobility, medication and safety, then set out what support would meet the need. A financial assessment is carried out separately to establish who pays for what.

Will Essex County Council contribute towards home care?

It depends on the outcome of the needs assessment and the financial assessment taken together. Essex County Council applies the national means test, so capital above the upper threshold means funding care privately, while capital below it can bring a contribution towards the cost. Where care is funded, a direct payment is often available so that you can choose the agency yourself rather than accept an arranged service. Attendance allowance is not means tested and can be claimed alongside any of these arrangements.

Which agencies provide home care in Essex?

475 agencies registered to deliver care in people's own homes are listed for Essex. They include national providers running local branches as well as small independent agencies covering only a few towns. Coverage is the first thing to establish, because registration in the county does not guarantee that an agency's rounds reach a particular address. Each entry links to a profile showing the Care Quality Commission rating and the inspection findings behind it.

How does home care compare with moving into a care home?

Home care brings a carer to the door for planned visits while your relative stays in their own house with their routine, neighbours and belongings around them. A residential care home provides accommodation with support available through the day and night, and a nursing home adds registered nurses on site for clinical needs. Home care suits people whose needs fall at predictable points in the day and can be increased gradually as circumstances change. Where someone needs supervision around the clock, a residential setting is usually the more realistic option.

How early should a family start looking for an agency in Essex?

A few weeks is usually enough to compare agencies, arrange an assessment and let a package start gently rather than at full strength. Beginning early leaves room to trial a small number of visits and build on them as needs become clearer. When care is required on discharge from hospital the timescale shrinks to days, and a temporary package may be arranged for you while longer term choices are made. Nothing about that first arrangement is fixed, so treat it as a starting point.

What should I ask an agency before agreeing to a care package?

Ask how many different carers will come in a typical fortnight and whether the same people return, since continuity matters more than almost anything else. Ask how late or missed calls are handled and whether the family is told at the time. Ask how visits are recorded, whether relatives can see the records, and how medication is documented. Ask about minimum call lengths, notice periods and charges for travel or bank holidays, and ask for the answers in writing.
