Hillcroft Residential Care Home is a care home in Ormskirk, Lancashire. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, we support people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. One of the things we would encourage any family to look at is what people here actually do between breakfast and bedtime. An activities board is easy to produce. A day with something in it that a particular person cares about takes more thought. We would rather somebody spent the afternoon doing one thing they have always enjoyed than sat through a group session arranged for the sake of having one. So we ask people what they used to do, what they still want to do and what they would rather be left out of, and we plan around that. Some residents want company most of the day, others want their own room and a quiet hour with the radio, and neither is treated as a problem. For those living with dementia, we work from the person's history rather than their diagnosis. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering care locally, and come at an ordinary time of day.

- Care Home
Cawood House is a care home in Stockport. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Respite deserves more than a passing mention, because it is often what keeps a family going. Carers at home tend to carry on far longer than they should before asking for help, and by the time they do they are frequently exhausted rather than merely tired. A planned stay here gives them room to recover properly, and it gives the person staying a proper welcome rather than a fortnight of being managed. We treat short stays exactly as we treat permanent ones. For permanent residents, the day is theirs. People get up when they want, eat what they want, spend their time where they choose and see visitors when it suits. Rooms belong to the people in them. Supporting somebody with dementia is mostly about steadiness. The same faces, a recognisable rhythm to the day, and staff who understand what lies behind a repeated question. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at care in Stockport, whether for a short stay or a longer one, please come and see us.

Silverdene Residential Home is a care home in Manchester. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if nobody is treated as a category. What a younger autistic adult wants from a week bears almost no relation to what an older person living with dementia needs from it. So we sit down with each person, work out what their week should actually contain, and arrange staffing around that rather than the reverse. Residents decide how their own day runs, keep their own things around them and see visitors when it suits them. Where sight or hearing has failed, we say who has come into the room and describe what is happening rather than assuming it is obvious. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering care in the city, and talk to the people living here as well as to us.

The Gables is a care home in Whitehaven. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we would rather put it at the start than leave it to be discovered. The inspection found things that were not good enough for the people living here. We have accepted those findings and we are working through them. Anyone considering the home should ask precisely what was identified and precisely what has changed since, and should press if the answer sounds general. What we are working towards is straightforward. A home where residents decide how their own day runs, where rooms belong to the people in them, where visitors come when it suits them, and where staff know the people they support properly rather than in outline. Please visit before you decide anything. Read the inspection report in full, talk to residents and relatives, and judge the home on what you find.

Clover House is a care home in Morecambe. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people managing a mental health condition. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Stability is the main thing we try to offer. A number of the people who come here have moved between placements more often than anyone should, and each move undoes work that took months to build. So we plan on the basis that people are staying, we do not treat a difficult week as grounds for reconsidering, and we are careful not to promise what we cannot sustain. Living here is meant to be ordinary. People have their own rooms and routines, come and go, use the town and make their own decisions, including some we might not have chosen for them. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we put real effort behind it. Consistency counts for more than enthusiasm with most of the people we support. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a placement here, please visit and ask us whatever matters to you.

Elm House is a residential care home in Nantwich, Cheshire, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision. We do not currently hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We would rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything written here, so please visit and ask us the questions that matter to you.

The Spinal Unit Action Group provides a residential care home in Southport for adults with physical disabilities, particularly people living with spinal injury and the practical realities that come with it. Support here is highly individual, because two people with similar injuries can want quite different things from their day. It can include personal care, help with medication, specialist assistance with moving and positioning, and support to get out of the house, keep up interests, see people and manage a life of one's own. We are careful to assist in a way that leaves the person directing how things are done, since being helped is not the same as being taken over, and that distinction matters enormously to the people who live here. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the place before anything permanent is decided. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would sooner tell you that ourselves than let you find it elsewhere. The areas identified are where our effort is going at present, and we are happy to talk them through with anyone considering us.

Elm House Care Home is a residential care home in Skelmersdale providing care for older people, including people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. We run the home at the pace of the people in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley comes round, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, support with mobility, and somebody always around when a person needs them. For people with loss of sight or hearing we adapt how we communicate, how rooms are lit and how we approach and announce ourselves, because those small changes decide whether somebody is included or left on the edge of what is going on. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than have it sit unspoken. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Elmhurst in Bury provides short stays rather than permanent residential care. People come to us for a planned break, to give a family carer a genuine rest, or for extra support and recovery time after a spell in hospital before going home again. Because our stays are short, we work hard to learn quickly what matters to somebody: how they like their day to run, what they eat, what worries them and what they want to be able to do by the time they leave. We help with personal care, medication, meals and moving about safely, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. We support people living with dementia, where familiar faces and a calm, predictable routine matter enormously, particularly when somebody is in an unfamiliar place. We also support people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, adapting how we communicate and how we assist, and we support younger adults as well as older people. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If a short stay might help you or somebody you care for, please get in touch and ask us how it would work.

Marsh House is a residential care home in Leyland, Lancashire. We provide a permanent home to older adults and to some younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who need care for a short while or whose regular carer needs a break. We help with the things that have become hard: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, taking medication at the right time, eating well. A number of the people who live here have physical disabilities, and we think carefully about equipment, positioning and access so that somebody can do as much for themselves as possible rather than waiting to be done for. Where someone needs help from two of us, they get it promptly and without fuss. The house itself is not grand and we do not pretend otherwise. What it has is a decent kitchen, comfortable sitting rooms, a garden that gets used, and staff who tend to stay, which means residents are looked after by people who know them. Meals are cooked here and we take requests. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We support older people, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. We support a broad range of needs, which is deliberate rather than accidental. People do not arrive with a single label, and we would rather build support around an individual than turn somebody away because their needs sit across two categories. For an older resident that may mean unhurried help with personal care, safe support with moving about and medication given properly. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time and support to get out to a job or a course. For somebody living with mental ill health it may mean a settled, low pressure place to live and close work with the community team. Where physical disability or sensory loss is part of the picture, equipment, access and how we communicate all get real attention. Every plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. 13 Durham Avenue is a small residential care home in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. We support older people and adults with learning disabilities, including autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Because the people who live here have quite different needs, we take care to be specific rather than general. For an older resident that may mean unhurried help with washing and dressing, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, help to manage money and appointments, and support to get out to a job, a course or a club. Each plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. Being a small house is an advantage here. Lostock Grove Rest Home is in Leyland, Lancashire. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. Days here run at a gentle pace. There is breakfast when people are ready for it, food cooked on the premises, newspapers, cards, music, visits from the hairdresser and time in the garden when the weather allows. Nobody is obliged to join in with anything, and families visit as often as they like and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. 51 Wellington Road is a small residential care home in Wallasey supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. Being small is the point: the household can be shaped around the people who live in it rather than around a routine that suits an organisation. Support here is individual. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it covers the things that make a week worth having: seeing people, going out, keeping up an interest, being useful, having plans of your own. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and a routine that can be relied upon matters greatly to most of the people we support. We give people the time to do things themselves even when stepping in would be quicker, and where somebody wants more independence support is planned to withdraw gradually as they grow into it. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody get used to the house before anything permanent is discussed. The Chimes is a residential care home in Lytham St Annes for older people who need care, company and a settled place to live. We are a house rather than an institution, and the day here has the ordinary shape of meals, conversation, fresh air and rest. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we call in community health professionals whenever something more clinical is needed. Just as important are the things that are harder to write into a care plan: being listened to, having proper conversation, and somebody noticing when a resident seems quieter or less well than usual. We keep an eye on how people are eating and sleeping, because those are often the first signs that something needs attention. Respite stays are available as well. They give family carers a proper break, and they let somebody find out how the home feels before any permanent decision is taken. Our care is residential rather than nursing, which means help with washing and dressing, medication, eating well and moving about safely, alongside the things that are harder to measure but matter just as much: conversation, being listened to and somebody noticing when a person is not quite themselves. We support residents living with dementia, and our approach is to learn each person's history and habits properly so that reassurance can be given in terms that make sense to them. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say that here ourselves than leave a family to find it later. The areas identified are where our effort is going at present, and we are not asking anyone to take our word for it. Please visit, speak to residents and their relatives, and judge us on what you actually find.

- Care Home
Park Grove Care Home is a residential care home in Ormskirk providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to behave like one. Residents here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things ought to be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to fit one routine. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, laundry and getting out and about, but a good deal of what makes a home work is harder to list: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is off colour, and having staff who stay long enough to tell the difference. Meals matter more than people expect. They are one of the few fixed points in a day and they ought to be something to look forward to, so we pay attention to what people actually like rather than what is easiest to produce. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us.

Chorley House is a residential care home in Bolton supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and adults living with mental health conditions. This is somewhere people live rather than somewhere they have been sent, and we run the household on that basis. Support here is individual. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it takes in the things that make a week worth having: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having plans of your own. A settled, predictable routine matters greatly to most of the people we support, as does communication pitched to suit the individual. We give people the time to do things their own way rather than stepping in for the sake of speed, and where somebody wants more independence we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. Most of the people we support are younger adults, and we take care not to treat them as a group with a single set of needs. Respite stays are available too, giving a family carer a real break or a settled place to be during a difficult period. We do not currently hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Brookfield Residential Care Home is in Manchester, in the borough of Bury, supporting adults living with mental health conditions. Support can include help with medication, personal care where it is needed, managing a household, budgeting, getting to appointments and taking part in ordinary life beyond these walls. Where somebody has goals of their own, whether that is work, study, seeing more of their family or simply managing more of their own affairs, we plan support that steps back as they step forward. The work of the house continues properly meanwhile. Support is built around the individual rather than around a category, so one person may need help with almost every part of the day and another very little, and both live here on the same terms. People are supported to get out to work, college, clubs and family, and communication gets particular attention throughout the house. Short respite stays are available. Langdales is a residential care home in Blackpool. We are home to older people who need support with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We think of this as somewhere people live, not somewhere care is delivered to them, and we try to make that difference obvious in how the house runs. Residents tell us when they like to get up, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the day. Support with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with proper regard for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage for themselves is protected rather than taken over. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious instead of arguing with them. We keep the day familiar and explain changes in advance wherever we can. Company matters too, and we pay attention to residents who would otherwise spend the day alone in their room. Families are welcome whenever they want to come and we would far rather hear a worry while it is small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Ivy Cottage is a care home in Kendal. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, mostly younger adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We would rather say that plainly than leave it unmentioned, and we would encourage families and social workers to visit and judge us on what they find. This is a house, and it is meant to feel like one. The people living here decide what goes on the shopping list, what gets cooked, how their rooms look and how they spend their time. Some go out to work or to college, some use local groups and facilities, and some prefer a quieter week with a few things they enjoy properly. We do not rank those. Being in a small town has its advantages. Things are within reach, the same faces turn up in the same places, and people here are known locally as individuals rather than as residents of somewhere. Most of our effort goes into communication and predictability. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things. Please come and visit if you are considering a placement.

Floshfield is a small residential home at Cleator in Cumbria, and it is home to adults with learning disabilities and to autistic adults. We also offer respite stays, planned well in advance so that a short stay means arriving somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. We run this as the residents' house. People choose how their bedrooms look, they have a genuine say in the shopping and the meals, and they get involved in cooking, gardening and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and money, and it covers getting out to whatever somebody is interested in, whether that is work, a course, a club, a walk in the fells or a regular visit to family. Where we put most of our effort is understanding each person properly. Some people here use speech, some use signs, symbols or a device, and some tell us what they need through their behaviour. We take the time to learn it, we write it down so it survives a change of shift, and we take advice from families and health colleagues who have known somebody far longer than we have. Holme Manor Care Home is a residential home in Rossendale, Lancashire. We are a permanent home to older people, and we also offer respite stays for those who need care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication and meals, and reassurance that somebody is nearby at night. Many are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people living with mental ill health, working alongside community mental health colleagues so that what happens here fits with the rest of a person's care. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the valley views are worth having, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Deciding on a care home is not something to do from a brochure, so please come and visit and talk to whoever is on duty.

The Dales is a residential care home in Maryport, Cumberland, providing care for older people, along with shorter respite stays. We are a straightforward sort of place. There is no elaborate philosophy behind what we do beyond looking after people properly and letting them get on with their lives. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about if a person needs them. People choose how much they want to join in. Some are in the lounge from breakfast onwards and some prefer their own room with the door propped open, and neither choice earns any remark from us. The point of a home is that you can live in it the way you want to. Maryport and the coast around it are home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors and a good deal of flexibility about when family can come. They can come whenever they like. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and managing money, and it covers getting out to the things people care about, whether that is a job, a course, a gym, a club or seeing family. We pay close attention to how each person communicates and to what makes a day feel manageable. Predictable routines, clear information given in good time, and staff who understand somebody's particular sensitivities all make a genuine difference, so we get those details right and record what works. Where somebody becomes distressed we look at why rather than simply managing the behaviour. We are registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Families and professionals are welcome to visit.

Ashwood Residential Care Home is in Wigan. We are a permanent home to older people, many of whom are living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. We help with the things that have become difficult: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, eating and drinking well, and having somebody nearby through the night. Where dementia is part of the picture it shapes the whole house rather than one wing of it. We keep the day recognisable, keep familiar staff around people, let residents hold on to their own belongings and habits, and sit with somebody who is upset instead of trying to talk them out of it. Food is cooked here and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and families visit whenever they can and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Choosing a care home is a hard thing to do, so please come and visit, more than once if that helps, and talk to whoever is on shift. That will tell you more than anything we can write here.

Mount View House is a residential care home in Rochdale. We support older people, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Supporting that range of people well means being specific rather than general. For an older resident it may mean unhurried help with personal care, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, and help to manage money, appointments and getting out to a job or a course. For somebody living with mental ill health it may mean a settled, low pressure place to live and close work with the community mental health team so that what happens here fits with the rest of their care. Every plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. We try to keep the house feeling ordinary rather than institutional: food is cooked here and people are asked what they would like, there is somewhere sociable and somewhere quiet, and nobody is obliged to join in with anything. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone considering a placement is welcome to visit and see how the house actually runs.

Royal College Manchester, in Cheadle, provides residential care alongside education and therapy for young adults with complex needs. We support autistic people and people with learning disabilities, including those with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss, and we also offer respite stays. Supporting people with this level of complexity means being specific about each individual rather than general about everybody. We spend a great deal of effort on communication, because most of the people we support communicate in ways other than speech, whether through signs, symbols, objects, a device or their behaviour. Understanding that properly is the foundation of everything else, so we learn it, write it down, and work closely with speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and physiotherapists rather than treating care and therapy as separate things. Where physical disability is part of the picture, equipment, seating, positioning and access all get close attention, because those details decide what somebody can actually do. Where somebody becomes distressed, we look at why rather than simply managing the behaviour. People here have their own rooms and their own things, and they have real say over how their time is spent. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit.

Croft House Rest Home is a residential care home in Preston, Lancashire. We offer a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also provide respite stays for people who need care for a short period or whose regular carer needs a rest. The people who live here need different things from us. Many need help with personal care, mobility, medication and meals. A number are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day familiar, keep the same staff around and work at their pace. We also support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much somebody can do independently. We should be honest about our standing. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you come across it elsewhere. We understand what the inspectors told us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any of it with anybody considering a place here or already living with us. What we are working towards is a house that feels like a home: food cooked here that people actually want, somewhere quiet as well as somewhere sociable, and visitors welcome without an appointment. Heath Lodge is a care home in Warrington. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Being small means people are known in detail rather than in general. That matters most when something is wrong, because staff who know somebody well can tell the difference between a bad mood and pain, and between wanting to be left alone and quietly withdrawing. The effort goes into communication and predictability. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things, and changes are explained well in advance. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

Mapledale is a residential care home in Chorley, Lancashire, providing a home for a varied group of people: older adults, younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people with loss of sight or hearing, and people living with mental health conditions. That breadth works because we build support around the individual rather than around a label. One person may need help with almost every part of the day and another very little, and both live here on the same footing. We ask each person what a good day looks like for them, write it down in a form that makes sense to them, and change it when they tell us to. Communication gets particular attention, using speech, signing, symbols or simply the understanding that comes from knowing somebody well. For people with sensory loss we adapt how rooms are lit and how we approach and announce ourselves. People here are supported to get out to work, college, clubs and family, and to be as involved in running the house as they want. Respite stays are available. Arranging and funding a care home place in the North West
With 1,287 residential care homes listed across the North West, families have a wide field to consider, but the practical starting point is usually the same: understanding what is needed and how it will be paid for. A care needs assessment, arranged through the local authority social care team, sets out the level of daily support required and whether residential care is the right route. The assessment is free, and anyone appearing to need care can request one, whether they are funding privately or hoping for public support.
The care needs assessment
An assessor will look at mobility, personal care, memory, continence, nutrition and how someone manages day to day. If a residential home is recommended, a separate financial assessment follows to work out who pays. Family carers can also ask for a carer's assessment in their own right, which is useful when a stay is being arranged during a period of strain at home.
How costs work in practice
Residential fees in the North West vary between providers and depend on room type, location and the complexity of care. Where savings and assets fall below the national thresholds, the local authority contributes towards fees and agrees a personal budget with the resident. Where someone is a self-funder, they contract directly with the home but can still ask the local authority for guidance and a light-touch assessment. NHS-funded nursing care and, in some cases, NHS Continuing Healthcare may apply if health needs are significant, though these sit outside standard residential funding.
Choosing between care homes in the North West
The 1,287 residential homes on this page reflect the full spread of CQC ratings currently in use, from Outstanding through Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate, alongside newer services that are not yet rated. That mix is normal for a region this size, and a rating is a starting point rather than a verdict. Homes such as Browfield Residential Home, Madeline McKenna Court, Greenfields Care Home and Abbeyfield Silverdale and District Society Limited appear in the Good bracket, while some services shown here are currently marked Requires Improvement and others are awaiting inspection. Read the most recent CQC report in full before drawing conclusions.
Matching the home to the person
Think about the specifics: is the person living with dementia, do they need help with mobility, are they sociable or private, do they want a garden or a quieter setting? Some homes on the list specialise in older people's residential care, some support younger adults, and others provide short breaks or reablement. Shortlist three or four services that match the person's routine and interests, not just their care level.
Visiting and asking the right questions
Visit in person where possible, ideally more than once and at different times of day. Notice how staff speak to residents, how the home smells, whether people look occupied and whether meals feel unhurried. Ask about staff turnover, activities, how care plans are reviewed, and how the home handles hospital admissions or changes in need. A trial stay, sometimes offered as a short respite booking, can be a sensible way to test the fit before committing to a permanent move.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in the North West
How many care homes are there in the North West?
The North West has 1,287 CQC registered care homes: 34 Outstanding, 938 Good, 210 Requires improvement, 10 Inadequate, 95 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
How much does a care home cost in the North West?
Self-funders are typically asked £1,249 to £1,514 a week. Middle half of prices from 20 North West homes. Median £1,409. Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price.
Which care homes in the North West were inspected most recently?
Salisbury House Residential Home (29 September 2026), Sea Bank House (28 September 2026) and Fylde and Wyre Short Break Services (28 September 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can the local authority fund a care home placement in the North West?
Yes, where a care needs assessment confirms residential care is appropriate and a financial assessment shows savings and assets are below the national thresholds, the local authority contributes towards the fees. The resident normally pays a contribution from income such as pensions, and the local authority tops up the balance against an agreed personal budget. If the family wishes to choose a home costing more than that budget, a third-party top-up may be required. NHS Continuing Healthcare is a separate route for people whose primary need is a health need.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in the North West?
Contact the adult social care team at the local authority responsible for the person's home address and ask for a needs assessment. It is free and available to anyone who appears to need care and support, regardless of income or savings. An assessor will visit, usually at home or in hospital, and speak with the person and their family about daily life and any difficulties. The outcome sets out what support is recommended, which may include residential care, home care, respite or equipment.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides personal care such as help with washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, delivered by trained care staff. A nursing home offers the same personal care but also has registered nurses on duty around the clock to manage clinical needs such as complex medication, wound care or conditions requiring ongoing nursing oversight. All 1,287 providers listed on this North West page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is needed, a different search and a healthcare assessment will usually be required.
What should I ask when visiting a care home in the North West?
Ask how care plans are written and reviewed, how the home communicates with families, and how staff are trained in areas relevant to your relative such as dementia or falls prevention. Enquire about staffing levels at night, activities during the week, meal choices and how the home responds if someone becomes unwell. Ask to see a recent CQC report and any resident or family survey results. Trust your impressions too, including how residents are spoken to and whether staff seem settled.
Which providers in the North West offer residential care?
All 1,287 providers on this page are registered residential care homes across the North West, spanning small family-run houses and larger group-owned services. The CQC ratings represented include Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, Inadequate and services not yet rated, so it is worth filtering by area and reading each provider's profile before shortlisting. Examples in the current listing include Mellor Nook Residential Care Home, Trewan House Care Home, Bruce Lodge and Ashbourne House - Stockport. Use the directory to narrow by location and rating, then contact homes directly to check availability.
How far in advance should I start looking for a care home?
Where a move is planned rather than urgent, starting three to six months ahead gives time to visit several homes, request a care needs assessment and sort out funding. In practice many families begin the search after a hospital admission or a sudden change at home, when decisions have to be made in days. Even in urgent situations, a short respite stay can bridge the gap while a longer-term choice is considered properly. Popular homes in the North West can have waiting lists, so early enquiries are worthwhile even if the move itself is some way off.
