Choosing the Right Care Home in Tameside and What to Look For
Residential care covers accommodation, meals, laundry and help with everyday personal care from staff who are present at all hours. What it does not cover is care from a registered nurse, and establishing whether that is needed is the first decision, because it determines whether the twenty six homes listed here are the right field at all.
Being specific about the help required
Set out plainly where the difficulty lies, whether that is mobility, continence, appetite, night time confusion or remembering medication. Ask each home which specialisms it holds registration for, particularly around dementia, and what happens if needs grow beyond what residential care can meet. A manager who can describe how they handled that for a real resident is giving you a far more useful answer than any brochure.
Reading the ratings with care
Auden House Residential Home holds the only Outstanding rating here, seventeen homes are rated Good and eight are rated Requires Improvement. That last figure is worth taking seriously without treating it as a bar. Open each report, check the inspection date and look at which of the five key questions were marked down, since findings about medicines or safeguarding carry far more weight than findings about record keeping. Ask the manager directly what changed afterwards and expect specifics.
What a visit will tell you
Visit when the home is busy rather than at a quiet hour. Watch how staff speak to residents who are not expecting a visitor, whether people are occupied and how quickly call bells are answered. Ask how many carers are on duty overnight, how much agency cover is used and how long the manager has been in post. Seeing a meal served, and the help given with it, is worth more than a tour of empty rooms.
Arranging and Funding a Placement in Tameside
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support has a right to an assessment, and a relative, a GP or a hospital discharge team can request one on their behalf. It is free and does not depend on savings. Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council Adult Social Care carries out that assessment and the financial assessment that follows, which decides how much of the weekly fee the council meets and how much the resident pays.
What a place costs
Fees are set by each provider and differ across the homes listed, so ask for a written schedule rather than a figure given over the telephone. Check what sits outside the fee, such as hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers or escorted appointments. Where the council funds a placement it pays up to a set weekly rate, and a family choosing a costlier home may be asked to meet the difference.
Points to settle before a move
Ask what notice is given of a fee increase, whether the room is held during a hospital stay and how care plans are reviewed once someone has settled in. Ask too how families are kept informed when something changes, and what the home does if private savings fall to the level where council support begins.
