About Sandon House
We are Sandon House, a residential care home in Ashton under Lyne, Tameside. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home on their own, including many residents living with dementia. We are a residential home rather than a nursing home, which means our care is about daily living: help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and the ordinary business of a day, with district nurses and GPs coming in when health care is needed. It also means the atmosphere we aim for is domestic. People get up when they wake, eat where they like, bring their own things with them, and spend their time as they choose. Dementia shapes a good deal of how we work. We keep routines steady, we do not rush people, and we take the trouble to learn what a person's life has been so that we can make sense of what they are telling us now, even when the words have become difficult. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. We keep checking our own practice between inspections, since that is where standards are actually held. Families are a part of life here and are welcome to visit, join us for a meal or raise anything that is bothering them. If you are looking at care in Tameside, come and see us and form your own impression.

Dementia Care at Sandon House
Tameside General Hospital is 2 miles from the home in a straight line. Dementia shapes a good deal of how Sandon House works, by its own account. It says it keeps routines steady, does not rush people, and learns what a person's life has been so as to make sense of what they are saying now. That last point matters most when words have become difficult. Ask how distress is handled and whether any part of the building is secured. Ask how staffing continuity is managed and what happens as dementia advances.
