About Us

Ivy Cottage is a care home in Kendal. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, mostly younger adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places.

We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We would rather say that plainly than leave it unmentioned, and we would encourage families and social workers to visit and judge us on what they find.

This is a house, and it is meant to feel like one. The people living here decide what goes on the shopping list, what gets cooked, how their rooms look and how they spend their time. Some go out to work or to college, some use local groups and facilities, and some prefer a quieter week with a few things they enjoy properly. We do not rank those.

Being in a small town has its advantages. Things are within reach, the same faces turn up in the same places, and people here are known locally as individuals rather than as residents of somewhere.

Most of our effort goes into communication and predictability. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things.

Please come and visit if you are considering a placement.
