What residential care in Trafford involves and what to look for
Moving into a care home hands the daily work of meals, laundry, medication and personal care to someone else, and the question worth asking is how much of a person's own routine survives that change. It varies enormously between homes, which is why a list of thirty six has to be narrowed before it can be judged.
Making the ratings count
The Care Quality Commission assesses each home on five questions, covering whether it is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and the overall rating summarises those five. In Trafford five homes are rated Outstanding, twenty two Good and four Requires Improvement, with five awaiting a first rating. An Outstanding judgement is worth taking seriously, but it describes a moment in time, so check when the inspection took place before treating it as current. For the homes rated below Good, find out what specifically concerned the inspectors and whether they have been revisited since.
Questions that separate one home from another
Ask how many care staff are on duty overnight as well as during the day, and how often agency workers cover shifts. Ask how long the registered manager has been in post and how much the care team has changed over the past year. Establish whether the home could continue caring for someone as dementia advances or mobility declines, or whether that would eventually mean moving again. Visit twice if you can, with one visit around a mealtime, and watch how staff speak with residents who are not part of your tour.
Getting an assessment and working out the funding
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to an assessment, whatever their savings, and asking early is sensible even for families expecting to pay privately. It examines washing, dressing, meals, mobility, medication, risks around the home and the support a relative is already providing, ending in a written record of what is needed. Requests are made to Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, which is responsible for adult social care assessments and for arranging funded support in the borough. A relative caring unpaid can request a carer's assessment of their own needs at the same time.
Fees, means testing and what to check before signing
A financial assessment follows, taking account of income, savings and, for a permanent move, the value of a property in most circumstances. Capital above the threshold means the resident pays the fees; below it the council contributes in line with the assessment. Charges are set by each home rather than centrally, so they vary across Trafford with the room, the level of support and whether nursing input forms part of the arrangement. Ask for the weekly fee in writing together with a list of what is billed separately, since hairdressing, chiropody and outings usually are, and ask how much notice is given before fees rise. Where health needs are substantial, ask whether NHS continuing healthcare has been considered, because that is assessed separately and can change who pays.
