How Contributions Are Worked Out
Once residential care is agreed as the right course, a financial assessment establishes what the person pays and whether the council meets any of the cost. Income, savings and in some cases the value of a property are considered, with separate rules where a partner remains living at home. Even with council support, most people pay a contribution towards their fees. Ask now what happens if savings later drop below the threshold, because having that answer ready avoids an unwanted move at the worst possible time.
What a Placement Really Costs
Weekly fees differ noticeably between homes here, according to room size, facilities and the level of support someone needs. Request the fee schedule and a copy of the contract in writing before agreeing anything, and check which items fall outside the weekly rate, such as hairdressing, chiropody, escorted appointments and outings. If a council funded place costs more than the authority is prepared to pay, a third party top up may be requested, and whoever signs that undertaking should be sure it is affordable for years rather than months.

Ask how many permanent staff cover each shift, how often agency workers are used and how long the manager has been in post.
