Working with a varied set of judgements

Ask how many registered nurses are rostered during the day and overnight, and how much of that cover comes from agency staff rather than the home's own team. Ask what staffing looks like in the small hours rather than mid afternoon. Ask how falls, pressure areas, chest infections and support at the end of life are managed, how quickly a GP attends, how long the manager has been in post and what nurse turnover has been.
Distance and the habit of visiting
Leicestershire covers a good deal of ground, and a home relatives can reach easily is a home that gets visited. Frequent visitors notice changes in someone's condition early, know the staff and raise concerns before they harden into problems. Because nursing is involved, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes towards the nursing element and is paid straight to the home, while NHS Continuing Healthcare can meet the entire cost where needs are primarily health related rather than social. All three are assessed separately, so ask about each by name rather than waiting to be offered them.
Fees and what to establish early
Ask what the weekly charge includes and what is invoiced on top, whether chiropody, hairdressing, continence products or escorted appointments. Ask how often fees are reviewed and what the last rise amounted to. Ask what the home does when a self funding resident's capital runs down and council support becomes necessary, because that answer determines whether a further move could be forced at a difficult moment.
