Hertfordshire is set out here in one place, with the care homes registered across the county gathered into a single listing that can be sorted and compared rather than trawled through. Inspection outcomes run the full length of the scale, because the Care Quality Commission has awarded Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate among these homes, while a further group has yet to receive a published rating. One hundred and seventy five residential care homes match the search, each registered for personal care and everyday support rather than nursing delivered on site. Hertfordshire County Council carries out the care needs assessment that establishes what support a person requires, and arranges funded help for those who meet the eligibility rules. Given how widely the judgements differ here, treat a rating as the start of the enquiry rather than the end of it. Open the profiles that draw you in, read the inspection report sitting behind each one, and let the evidence rather than the brochure settle where you visit.

- Care Home
Oak Cottage is a residential care home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, and we think of it first as somebody's home and only second as a place where care is delivered. People come to us for the long term and also for shorter respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a proper break or to allow someone to regain their confidence after a spell in hospital. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people who live with a mental health condition. What that support looks like differs from person to person. Some of those who live here need a hand with washing, dressing and medication and little else. Others need patient reassurance through the day, a familiar routine, and staff who notice quickly when something is not quite right. We take the time at the outset to learn about a person's history, their preferences and the ordinary things that make a day feel like a good one. Life here is unhurried. People choose when to get up, where to sit, whether to join in with what is going on in the communal areas or keep their own company for a while. Families are welcome whenever they wish to visit and we would far rather they came often. If you are looking for a home for a relative in this part of Hertfordshire, please arrange to come and see us. It is much easier to judge a place by walking around it and meeting the people who live here.

- Care Home
St Lauras is a residential care home in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are part of what we do. We judge ourselves on unglamorous measures: how long people wait, whether anybody eats alone who would rather not, and whether a quiet resident has been spoken to today. Where a resident communicates differently, whether through sight, hearing or anything else, we settle that properly at the start and everybody uses the same approach consistently. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what a person can still manage themselves rather than what is fastest for us, because independence given up for convenience is rarely handed back. Respite guests get the same preparation as anybody else. We ask beforehand how somebody likes things done, since a fortnight leaves no room for guesswork. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often notice what we have stopped seeing, and we would rather they said so plainly than be polite about it.

- Care Home
Cromwell Avenue is a residential care home in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people who have sight or hearing loss, and older people and younger adults who need support close at hand. Because the home is not large, the way we work is genuinely individual. One person may want a busy week of college, work and clubs, while another needs the days to stay quiet and predictable, and we plan for both. For autistic residents we are careful about routine, about explaining changes well in advance, and about keeping somewhere quiet available when the house feels busy. Where somebody has sight or hearing loss, we take the time to learn how they prefer to communicate rather than expecting them to adapt to us. Independence runs through everything. People are supported to cook, shop, manage money as far as they are able and keep their rooms exactly as they want them. Respite stays are available for people needing support for a short period. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you would like to visit, or to talk about whether this could be the right home for somebody, please get in touch and we will make time for a proper conversation.

Sherwood Court is a residential care home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a home rather than a facility, and the people living here are supported to run their own lives as far as they are able. Ordinary life is the point of the place. That means cooking, shopping, keeping your own room exactly as you want it, getting out to college, work or a club, and having a genuine say in how the week is arranged. For autistic residents we pay close attention to the things that make a home manageable: steady routines, proper warning before anything changes, and a quiet space to retreat to when the day has been a lot. Support is offered at whatever level suits the person. We help where help is genuinely wanted and stand back where it is not, and we are as interested in what somebody can do independently as in what they need a hand with. Respite stays are available, which can give a family a break or serve as a trial for somebody considering a move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. - Care Home
We at Margaret House are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the peaceful town of Royston, Hertfordshire, where older people receive compassionate support tailored to their individual needs. Our home provides a genuine sense of belonging for every resident who joins our community. Nestled within the SG postcode area of Royston, our home benefits from the charm of this historic market town whilst offering a calm and comfortable environment for those in our care. The surrounding area of Hertfordshire provides a gentle backdrop that many families find reassuring when choosing a long term home for their loved one. Our specialisms are shaped around the needs of older people, with dedicated residential care, dementia care, and respite care all forming part of what we offer. For residents living with dementia, this means a familiar and supportive setting where routines, patience, and kindness underpin every interaction, helping to reduce anxiety and preserve dignity. For those requiring longer term residential care, we provide the everyday reassurance of a home where meals, companionship, and personal support are always close at hand. Our respite care offers families a trusted place for their loved one to stay for a shorter period, whether that follows a hospital stay, provides a family carer with a well earned break, or simply allows someone to try our home before making a longer commitment. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we take that responsibility seriously. Our approach centres on knowing each resident as an individual, understanding their history, their preferences, and the small details that make life feel comfortable and familiar. From favourite meals to treasured routines, we aim to weave those personal touches into daily life. Margaret House holds an overall rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, with Good ratings across every domain assessed: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this independent recognition offers reassurance that the care provided here meets the standards expected by the national regulator, and that our home operates thoughtfully across every aspect of what we do. If you are exploring residential care, dementia care, or respite care options in Royston or the wider Hertfordshire area, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We know how much thought goes into finding the right home, and we are here to answer your questions, listen to your concerns, and help you feel confident about the next step for your loved one.

- Care Home
This is a residential care home in Rickmansworth supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We think of it as a home first, shared by adults who have their own preferences, routines and opinions about how things should be done. Support is agreed with each person rather than applied to them. For some people it means help with personal care, cooking, laundry and looking after their own space. For others it is about getting out to work, college or the things they enjoy, managing money, and having someone reliable alongside in situations that would otherwise be overwhelming. We pay close attention to how each person communicates and to what in the house helps them feel calm, because those two things head off far more difficulty than any response after the event. Respite stays are available, which can give a family a planned break and can let someone get used to us gradually before anything longer is considered. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here, in whatever way works for each of them, whether they are happy with how things are, and we do something about what they say. If you would like to come and look round, please get in touch and we will find a time that works for you.

- Care Home
Riverside Lodge is a residential care home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. Our aim is straightforward. We want the people living here to feel that this is their home rather than somewhere they have been placed, and that shapes the ordinary decisions as much as the big ones. Residents bring their own furniture and pictures where they can, get up and go to bed when they choose, and are asked about how the home runs rather than told. For people living with dementia, we keep things familiar and predictable, and we pay close attention to the small routines that help someone feel settled. Families are often the best source of the details that make that possible, and we ask for them. Where someone has a physical disability, we take trouble over how help is given, because how a person is assisted with washing, dressing or moving matters as much as whether they are assisted at all. Respite stays are available, whether a family carer needs a planned break or someone needs company and support while regaining confidence after illness. We plan short stays with the same thought as permanent ones. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather people came to see the home and judge for themselves.

- Care Home
Wisteria Lodge is a residential care home in Watford, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a home rather than an institution, and the people who live here are tenants of their own lives as much as anybody else. Our focus is on ordinary living done well. Shopping and cooking, getting to college or to work, seeing friends and family, choosing what happens at the weekend, and having somewhere private to retreat to when the world is too loud. Support is arranged around each person, because two people with the same label can want entirely different things from a week. We work mainly with younger adults, and we take seriously the fact that this is a stage of life for building skills and independence rather than simply being looked after. Where someone wants to do more for themselves, our job is to step back at the right pace and be there if it does not go to plan. We also offer respite stays. A planned short stay can give a family carer a genuine break and can give the person staying with us a change of scene, new company and a chance to try living somewhere different. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you would like to visit and see how we work, you would be very welcome.

- Care Home
Clock Tower Mews is a residential care home in Potters Bar supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite stays. We run the home on the understanding that it belongs to the people who live in it. They decide how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, how a weekend is spent and who is part of it. Those may sound like small matters, but when much of somebody's life has already been arranged by other people, they are not small at all. Support is planned around each person and reviewed as they change. Some people here want to build skills and take on more for themselves, and our job then is to step back at the right speed and be there if something does not go to plan. Others want a settled, predictable life with reliable support around it, which is an equally good result. For autistic people, the environment is part of the care rather than the background. Noise, lighting, changes of staff and unfamiliar visitors can shape a whole week, so we plan for them properly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You would be very welcome to visit and see how the home works.

Carpenders Park is a residential care home near Watford, in Hertfordshire. We look after older people who need help with daily life but not nursing care, including a good many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. What we do is the ordinary business of the day, given properly and without rush. Getting washed and dressed in a way that leaves somebody feeling like themselves. Medicines on time. Meals that are hot, recognisable and worth eating. Help to move about the building safely. Company for people who had been sitting alone most of the week before they came to us. For residents with dementia the work is mostly about consistency. The same staff, the same rhythms, a bedroom that looks like the person's own room, and a willingness to go at their pace rather than ours. We ask families for the detail that no assessment ever captures. What he did for a living, what she cannot abide, which songs they know all the words to. We would rather relatives were in the building often than confined to set visiting hours, and we would rather be told promptly when we have got something wrong. We have not yet had a full inspection by the Care Quality Commission, so there is no overall rating to point you at. Call in and see us instead, with or without warning.

Here at Sewells, we provide residential care for adults in the heart of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. We are a care home that specialises in supporting people with learning disabilities and autism, as well as younger adults who need a safe, comfortable and genuinely homely place to live or to stay for a short period of respite. We understand that choosing a care home, whether for yourself or someone you love, is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. We take that responsibility seriously. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure every person who comes through our door feels respected, understood and at ease. We get to know each individual properly, because good care only comes from genuinely understanding the people we support, their routines, their preferences, their personalities and what matters most to them. Our team works hard to create an environment that feels like a real home rather than an institution. We encourage the people we support to live as independently as possible, to make choices about their day to day lives, and to take part in activities and experiences that are meaningful to them. For those who stay with us for a shorter period, we aim to provide the same warmth and consistency that longer term residents enjoy, so that respite care feels like a positive break rather than an unsettling change. We are proud to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment our team brings to their work every day. We are always looking at how we can do things better, and we welcome open, honest conversations with residents, families and those who support them. If you would like to find out more about life at Sewells or discuss whether we might be the right fit, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Lyndon House is a residential care home in St Albans. We look after older people who need daily care and support, including many people living with dementia. Good dementia care is mostly unglamorous. It is familiar faces, meals at the times somebody expects them, routines that hold together from one day to the next, and staff who have enough time in the day to let a conversation go at its own pace. We build the house around those things rather than around a timetable that suits the building, and we would rather adapt to a person than ask a person to adapt to us. Life here is meant to be ordinary. People choose when to get up, what to eat and how to spend the day, in company or quietly with the paper. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come. We also offer respite stays for families needing a break or for someone who needs support for a while after a stay in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We are glad of it, though the better test is whether someone seems settled here after a few weeks, and that is what we keep asking ourselves. We at Chaseways are proud to offer specialised residential care in the welcoming town of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, providing a supportive home for adults with a diverse range of needs. Our community is built around understanding, dignity, and genuinely personalised support that places each resident at the heart of everything we do. Set within the CM postcode area of Sawbridgeworth, our home benefits from its location in a friendly East of England town that combines a peaceful, residential atmosphere with easy access to local amenities and the wider Hertfordshire community. The setting offers residents the reassurance of a calm environment whilst remaining connected to everyday life, helping families feel confident that their loved ones are part of a genuine neighbourhood. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of experience our team brings to residential care. We support adults living with learning disabilities and autism, those managing mental health conditions, individuals with visual or hearing impairments, and younger adults who may require a setting attuned to their stage of life. In practice, this means we take the time to understand each person as an individual, learning about their preferences, communication styles, routines, and aspirations. For someone with autism, that might mean a predictable daily structure and sensory considerations. For a resident with a visual or hearing impairment, it means thoughtful adaptations and patient communication. For younger adults, it means encouraging independence, social connection, and the pursuit of personal interests. Families can take comfort in knowing that care here is not one size fits all but shaped around the person receiving it. Our most recent CQC inspection, carried out in March 2021, rated us as Requires Improvement overall, with Good ratings in both the Caring and Responsive domains. We are genuinely proud of the recognition our team has received for being caring and responsive, as these qualities sit at the very core of how we wish to be known. We also acknowledge openly that the Safe, Effective, and Well led domains were identified as areas requiring improvement, and we view this honestly as an opportunity rather than a setback. Continuous reflection, learning, and strengthening of our practices remain priorities, because the people who live with us and the families who trust us deserve nothing less than our ongoing commitment to getting better. If you are exploring residential care options for a loved one in Sawbridgeworth or the wider Hertfordshire area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with us. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the questions, hopes, and concerns that come with it. We would be glad to talk with you, listen to what matters most, and help you decide whether Chaseways could be the right place to call home.

Halcyon Days is a residential care home in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. We look after older people who need support with daily living, and we also welcome younger adults whose needs mean that managing at home is no longer realistic. Dementia care is a large part of our work. We keep the house calm and familiar, give people time rather than hurrying them along, and make sure staff know each resident's history and habits, because that knowledge shapes everything from how you greet somebody in the morning to how you help when they are unsettled. We want this to feel like a home rather than a setting. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, choose how they spend the day and see visitors when it suits them. Meals are planned around what people genuinely enjoy, and there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to support somebody while they build strength after illness. Relatives are part of daily life here. We keep them informed, welcome them at any reasonable hour, and ask them what they know about the person. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us and ask us whatever you need to ask.

Robin House is a residential care home in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. It is a house in an ordinary street, and people here are neighbours rather than residents of an institution. We begin with the person. How they communicate, what helps them feel calm, what unsettles them and what they actually want their life to contain. We record that carefully so everyone in the team works the same way, and we revisit it as people change their minds, because adults are allowed to do that. Support covers personal care, medication and health appointments, cooking, shopping and budgeting, and getting out into the local area for college, work, clubs, worship, family visits or simply a favourite route into town. Where someone wants to take a risk that most adults take without thinking twice, we look for the way to make it safe enough rather than closing the option down. Respite stays are available as well, giving families a planned break while their relative stays somewhere that becomes familiar quickly. We work openly with families, social workers and health colleagues, and would rather raise a concern early than let it grow. If you are considering a placement in Hertfordshire, please come and see the house.

We at Riverside Place are proud to offer compassionate nursing home care in the welcoming town of Ware, Hertfordshire. Nestled within the SG postcode area in the East of England, our home provides a calm and supportive environment for older people and adults living with complex needs, where dignity, comfort and individual wellbeing remain at the heart of everything we do. Our setting in Ware benefits from the gentle character of this historic Hertfordshire market town, with its riverside walks, local amenities and strong sense of community. Families visiting loved ones will find a location that feels both peaceful and connected, easily reached from across Hertfordshire and the wider East region. Inside, we strive to create a home that feels genuinely homely, offering comfortable communal areas where residents can socialise, quieter spaces for reflection, and private rooms designed to support rest, independence and personal expression. The care we provide is tailored to a broad range of needs. As a nursing home, we deliver around the clock clinical support for residents whose health requires the attention of qualified nurses, working closely with local healthcare professionals to ensure continuity and confidence in every aspect of treatment. Our specialism in older person care means we understand the importance of patience, familiar routines and meaningful daily moments, whether that involves a favourite meal, a shared conversation or simply a quiet cup of tea by the window. For families considering support for a loved one living with dementia, we offer dedicated dementia care that focuses on understanding the person behind the diagnosis. We aim to provide gentle reassurance, structured routines and sensitive communication, helping residents feel safe, valued and understood at every stage of their journey. We work in partnership with relatives, recognising that family knowledge and shared memories are invaluable in shaping truly personalised care. We also welcome residents living with physical disabilities, providing thoughtful support that promotes as much independence as possible whilst ensuring practical needs are met with kindness and skill. Our care extends to younger adults too, acknowledging that nursing needs can arise at any age and that every resident deserves a programme of support built around their own goals, interests and aspirations. Whether someone is recovering, adjusting to a new stage of life, or requires long term nursing, our approach remains the same: listen carefully, plan together and deliver care with warmth. Daily life at Riverside Place is shaped by the people who live here. We encourage residents to share their preferences, hobbies and life stories, so that the rhythm of each day feels familiar and fulfilling. From nutritious, home cooked meals to opportunities for gentle activity, companionship and quiet enjoyment, we aim to nurture both physical wellbeing and emotional contentment. Family involvement is always welcomed, and we believe that strong, open relationships with relatives make a real difference to a resident's sense of belonging. In terms of quality assurance, Riverside Place is currently listed as Not Yet Rated by the Care Quality Commission. This typically indicates that the home is newer to inspection or awaiting its first formal review, rather than a reflection of the care being delivered. We remain fully committed to meeting and exceeding national standards, and we welcome the opportunity to demonstrate our practice openly to residents, families and regulators alike. Transparency, continuous improvement and accountability are values we take seriously, and we are happy to discuss our policies, staff training and care approach with anyone considering our home. Choosing a nursing home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the questions, hopes and concerns that come with it. If you are exploring care options in Ware or the wider Hertfordshire area, we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions and arr

We are a residential care home in Bushey, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and people with loss of sight or hearing. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. Where sight or hearing is poor, small habits matter a great deal: saying who you are on coming into a room, speaking clearly and not moving things about without saying so. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission and are happy to discuss that openly. Please come and look round before deciding anything.

Here at Langley View Residential Home in Watford, Hertfordshire, we provide care and support for a wide range of people who need a safe, comfortable and genuinely welcoming place to call home. We support older adults, younger adults, people living with a learning disability or autism, those with mental health needs, and individuals with a physical disability. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether to recover, take stock, or simply to give family carers a well earned rest. We believe that good care looks different for every person, so we take time to understand what matters to each individual and shape our support around them rather than the other way around. Our team works hard every day to make Langley View feel like a real home rather than just a care setting. We want the people who live here to feel respected, heard and comfortable in their surroundings. That means being honest with residents and their families, keeping communication open, and being straightforward about how we are doing and where we are working to improve. We are aware that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of requires improvement, and we want to be transparent about that. We have taken that feedback seriously and we are actively working through the improvements identified. We feel it is important that families and prospective residents know this and can see for themselves the steps we are taking. If you are looking for care for yourself or someone you love, we would encourage you to come and visit us, meet the team and see Langley View for yourself. We are always happy to talk through your situation and explore whether we might be the right fit for you.

- Care Home
Three Rivers Care Home is a residential care home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, caring for older people including those living with dementia. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. A good care home is built from ordinary things done consistently. Meals people look forward to. Mornings that are not rushed. Staff who know that one resident always wants the crossword and another cannot bear the television on in the background. We put our effort into those details because they are what residents actually experience. Residents decide how to spend their days. Some enjoy the sociable parts of the house and whatever is going on, others prefer their own room, their books and the garden view, and both are entirely acceptable. Rooms belong to the people in them, and we encourage families to bring furniture, pictures and the things that make a space feel familiar. For residents living with dementia, familiarity and consistency matter more than almost anything. We keep routines steady and ask families to share the person's history so that our team can understand what lies behind a question or a worry, and respond to the feeling rather than correcting the detail. We would much rather families visited often and told us when something was wrong. If you are considering care for a relative, please come and look round, meet the team and take your time.

Orchard View is a residential care home in Watford, and we support adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults working towards a more independent life. Respite stays are available as well. We are a household rather than a facility, and that shapes how decisions get made here. What happens at teatime, what is on the television, who goes where at the weekend: these are matters for the people who live here rather than for a rota drawn up in an office. Our staff are part of that household, and we keep the team consistent, because being properly known by the people who support you affects every hour of the day. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home. Wherever we can, we do things alongside people rather than for them, and we are patient about it, even when it takes longer. For autistic people we pay close attention to predictability and to the sensory side of things. Changes are explained before they happen, routines hold, and we take noise, light and busyness seriously rather than treating them as fussiness. We have not yet had an overall rating published by the Care Quality Commission, which we say plainly rather than leaving you to look it up. Families, social workers and anybody considering Orchard View are welcome to visit and question us closely.

Here at Park House, we are a residential care home based in Watford, Hertfordshire, and we are proud to be part of this local community. We support a range of people, including younger adults living with a learning disability or autism, and we work hard to make sure that everyone who lives with us feels genuinely at home. We offer residential care on both a long term and respite basis. For those who need a short break from their usual setting, or whose families need some time to rest and recharge, our respite care gives people the opportunity to stay with us in a warm and supportive environment without any pressure. For those who move in on a permanent basis, we focus on building real relationships and understanding each person as an individual, not simply as a set of needs on a form. Supporting people with learning disabilities and autism requires us to think carefully about how we communicate, how we structure daily life, and how we create an atmosphere where people feel safe enough to be themselves. We take time to get to know the people we support, learning what matters to them, what they enjoy, and what they find difficult, so that we can provide care that actually fits around their lives rather than asking them to fit around ours. Our team in Watford are approachable and consistent, and we believe that continuity matters enormously for the people we support. Familiar faces, familiar routines, and a calm and respectful atmosphere all contribute to a setting where people can genuinely thrive. If you would like to find out more about Park House, whether for yourself or for someone you care about, we would always encourage you to get in touch or come and visit us. We are Corner House, a residential care home in St Albans, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and younger adults. This is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we work hard to keep that true in the ordinary details as well as the important ones. Support here is built around the individual. We take time to learn how a person communicates, what a good day looks like for them, what unsettles them and what they are working towards. Some people want a busy week with activities, college, work, volunteering or time out in the town, and others want a quiet and predictable rhythm they can rely on. Neither preference needs justifying, and we adjust to the person rather than asking the person to fit a routine that suits us. Help with personal care and mobility is given at the individual's pace and as discreetly as possible, and we are careful to leave as much choice and control with the person as we can. Everybody keeps their own room and their own belongings, and friends and family are welcome. We also offer respite stays, which give family carers a planned break and give the person staying a genuine visit rather than a hurried placement. We prepare for those carefully so nobody arrives to a room full of strangers. If you are considering Corner House, please come and see us and judge the place on an ordinary day rather than on a brochure.

Rookery House is a residential care home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of those living here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays. We treat this as somebody's home rather than a placement. People arrange their own rooms, have a real say in the food and the shopping, and are involved in how the household runs. Where somebody wants a job, a course or a club, that is the purpose of our support rather than an addition to it. Predictability matters a great deal here. For many of those living with us, knowing what is happening and who will be on shift is what makes a day workable rather than difficult, so we plan ahead and explain changes early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather write that plainly than have a family come across it and wonder what else we left unsaid. We accept what was found and we are working through it, and we are not going to claim it is all behind us in a paragraph. If you are considering this home for someone, please visit without an appointment, spend time with the people who live here, speak to relatives, and ask us hard questions about what has changed and what has not yet.

Abbey Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in St Albans in Hertfordshire. We support adults managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for people whose usual home is elsewhere. Supporting mental health in a residential setting is largely a matter of steadiness rather than intervention. We keep to arrangements we have made. We notice when somebody seems unlike themselves without turning it into an interrogation. We make it easy to talk to us without a formal appointment, and we are as reliable on the difficult weeks as on the good ones. Progress is rarely a straight line and our job is not to be surprised by that. This is people's home and we treat it accordingly. Rooms are theirs to arrange. People decide how their days go, who they see, whether they want company or their own space. We knock before we come in, we ask rather than assume, and we are quite prepared to be disagreed with. Being treated as an adult with your own view of your own life is not an extra here. Where people are working with community mental health teams, GPs or social workers, we join up with them properly rather than running alongside them, and we raise concerns early. St Albans has plenty of ordinary life close at hand, and we support people to stay part of it, in work, study, groups or friendships. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking what needs to change.

We at Highview Lodge are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the heart of Hemel Hempstead, providing dedicated dementia care and support for older people within a truly homely setting. Nestled in the HP postcode area of Hemel Hempstead, our home enjoys the benefits of its Hertfordshire location, offering residents a peaceful environment whilst remaining well connected to the wider community. The setting has been thoughtfully arranged to feel like a genuine home from home, where residents can relax, feel comfortable, and enjoy familiar routines in surroundings that are both safe and reassuring. Our care goes beyond the everyday. As a residential care home, we specialise in supporting older people, including those living with dementia, as well as younger adults, individuals with physical disabilities, and residents with visual or hearing impairments. We also offer respite care, providing invaluable short term support for families who need a trusted place for their loved one whilst they take a well earned break. In practice, this means our team is experienced in adapting to a wide range of needs, offering person centred support that respects each resident's individuality, life story, and preferences. Whether it is companionship through the day, gentle encouragement with daily routines, or specialist dementia support that prioritises dignity and calm, our approach is always led by the person in our care. For families, this breadth of specialism offers real peace of mind. Knowing that a variety of needs can be met under one roof, by a team familiar with your loved one, means fewer transitions and more continuity of care. We understand how important it is to feel confident that your relative is somewhere they are known, valued, and supported with genuine warmth. Following our most recent CQC inspection in July 2025, Highview Lodge received an overall rating of Requires Improvement. We are pleased that inspectors rated us Good for being Effective and Caring, recognising the quality of support residents receive and the compassion shown by our team every day. We fully acknowledge the areas identified for further development across Safe, Responsive, and Well led, and we are wholeheartedly committed to acting on this feedback. Transparent improvement is a priority for us, and we welcome open conversations with families about the steps being taken to raise standards across every part of our home. If you are exploring care options for someone you love, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Highview Lodge. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we would be honoured to answer your questions, share more about our approach, and help you decide whether our home is the right fit for your loved one.

Roselodge is a small residential home in Hatfield. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays. The atmosphere here is domestic rather than clinical, which is deliberate. People have their own space and their own belongings, and the household is run with them rather than around them. Cooking, shopping, laundry and what goes on the walls are all things people take part in, because independence grows out of doing things rather than being told about them. We plan support around what each person wants from their life. That might be help with meals and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a difficult day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and give plenty of notice before anything changes, since unexpected change is usually the hardest part. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures, objects or the particular way somebody shows they have had enough. Our staff are trained in positive behaviour support and we keep the team consistent so that people are supported by those who know them well. Respite guests are welcome to visit beforehand so that the house is familiar when they arrive, because arriving somewhere strange in the middle of a difficult week helps nobody. Manor View is a residential care home in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. With that mix under one roof, support has to be built around each individual rather than around a house routine. We take time to learn how each person communicates, what they can do for themselves, where they would like a hand and what tends to make a day harder, and we write support plans with the person in language that is genuinely theirs. For autistic residents, predictable routines and attention to sensory needs usually matter more than anything else we do. More generally we want this to be a house where people are known rather than managed. Residents keep their own routines where they want to, bring their own things and are asked about how the home runs rather than told, which counts for a good deal when so much else has already been decided for them. Respite stays are planned with visits beforehand wherever we can arrange them. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather people came and saw the home for themselves.

Westbrook House is a residential care home in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, both as a permanent home and for respite stays when someone needs a short break or a family carer needs one. The house belongs to the people who live in it. Everyone has their own support plan, written with them in a form they understand, covering how they like to be supported, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what they are working towards. Some people here want a clear structure to the week and will tell us plainly when it slips. Others prefer to make it up as they go along. Both are fine. We put a lot of weight on communication. Where someone does not use speech, we learn the ways they do tell us what they want and make sure everybody supporting them knows those signals too. That is also why we keep staffing as settled as we can manage. Where somebody becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than the quickest way to stop it, and anything that restricts a person's freedom is agreed properly, written down and reviewed with a view to reducing it. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. Families, advocates and commissioners are welcome to visit and see how the house actually runs.

Turning Point runs Brickfields Cottage near Buntingford, a residential care home for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best rather than working from a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out into the local area. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to come and see the house.

Here at Clarendon Lodge, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. We are a care home that genuinely feels like a home, and that matters deeply to everyone who lives and works here. We support people with a range of needs, including dementia care, residential care, physical disability, and visual and hearing impairment. We also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is to recover after a period in hospital or to give family carers some time to rest. Whatever brings someone through our doors, we aim to make sure they feel welcomed, comfortable, and well looked after from the very first day. Our approach is straightforward. We take the time to get to know each person, understanding their routines, their preferences, and what makes them feel at ease. For those living with dementia, this is especially important, and we work hard to create a calm, familiar environment where people can feel settled and secure. We are proud that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of Good, which reflects the consistent effort our team puts in every single day. That rating means a great deal to us, but what matters even more is the feedback we receive from residents and their families. Families are always welcome at Clarendon Lodge. We believe that staying connected to the people you love is a vital part of wellbeing, and we actively encourage visits and involvement in day to day life here. If you would like to find out whether Clarendon Lodge could be the right place for you or someone you care about, we would be very happy to have a conversation or arrange a visit to come and see us for yourself.

- Care Home
Tremona Care Home is a residential care home in Watford providing care for older people, including many people living with dementia. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We mention it early not to boast but because it reflects the things we have concentrated on, which are unremarkable in themselves. Staff who stay, so that people are cared for by faces they know. Routines that belong to the person rather than to the home. Time built into the day for sitting and talking, not only for tasks. Families treated as part of the household rather than as visitors to be managed. The care itself covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small things that become hard to manage alone. For people living with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings easy to understand, and we take the view that behaviour is almost always communication rather than a problem to be contained. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places, which families often use to cover a holiday or a period of illness at home. An outstanding rating is a standard to hold rather than a prize to display. Please ring us if you would like to come and see the home.

York House provides residential care in Watford for adults, with particular experience of supporting people with mental health needs. We also offer planned respite stays. We try to provide the sort of place where somebody can settle at their own pace. That means a calm and predictable environment, staff who are consistent and unflustered, and support that is steady without being intrusive. We help with personal care and medicines where that is needed, with meals and the running of the house, and with the practical business of appointments, letters, money and the many small things that become difficult when somebody is unwell. We ought to be straightforward about our inspection position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to present that as a misunderstanding. It reflected real shortfalls, and our manager and staff team have been working through the findings, with tighter medicines practice, clearer record keeping, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so that gaps are found by us rather than by an inspector. That work is not finished and we will not claim otherwise. If you are considering York House for somebody, please come and look round, ask exactly what has changed since the inspection, and speak to the people living here while you are in the building.

Haslewood Avenue is a residential care home in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, adults with physical disabilities and older people who need residential care. It is a home rather than a placement, and we try to make sure it feels that way to everyone who lives here. Support is built individually. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, money and appointments, and it also covers the parts of life that matter just as much: seeing friends, going out, keeping up an interest, having something worthwhile in the week. We communicate in the way that suits each person and we let people do things their own way and at their own speed, even when stepping in would be quicker. Where somebody wants more independence, we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. We support younger adults alongside older residents, and we are careful not to assume that people want the same things simply because they live under one roof. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a genuine break and letting someone try the house first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the household actually works.

Here at Silversprings, we provide residential care for adults in the heart of Watford, Hertfordshire. We support people with a range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, and visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for those who need a short break or a period of additional support. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or their family will ever make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone walks through our door, we want them to feel genuinely at ease. Our team takes the time to get to know each person properly, understanding not just their care needs but their routines, preferences, and the things that matter most to them in daily life. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are proud of, though we are always looking at where we can do better. That rating reflects the effort our staff put in every single day to make Silversprings a place where people feel safe, respected, and valued. We believe that where you live should feel like home, not just a place where care happens. We work hard to create an environment that is warm and comfortable, where residents can maintain as much independence as possible and continue doing the things they enjoy. For those joining us on a respite basis, we aim to make the transition as smooth and welcoming as possible, whether the stay is for a few days or a few weeks. If you would like to find out more about life at Silversprings or discuss whether we might be the right fit for you or your loved one, please do not hesitate to get in touch. 2 Ashley Close is a small residential home in Hemel Hempstead. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. Being small is the point rather than a limitation. This is a house and it feels like one. People have their own space and their own belongings, and the household is run with the people who live in it rather than around them. Meals, shopping, laundry and how the place looks are all decisions people take part in. We plan support around what each person wants from their life rather than around a timetable that suits the rota. That might be help with cooking and managing money, support to keep a college place or a job, assistance to travel independently, or somebody alongside on a difficult day. For autistic people we pay close attention to sensory needs and give notice of change well in advance. The house is arranged so that people with reduced mobility can get about safely and independently, and our staff are trained in moving and handling and in the equipment people rely on. Communication takes different forms here and we learn each person's, whether speech, signing, pictures or objects. Supporting mental health needs means patience, consistency and working alongside community teams. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. - Care Home
Walsingham Support at Hardy Drive is a residential care home in Royston, Hertfordshire, for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a house on an ordinary street, not an institution, and we think that matters. People living here have their own rooms and a genuine say in how the household runs, from what gets cooked to who comes round and what happens at the weekend. Being small means the staff really know the people they support, which is worth more than any care plan. Support is agreed with the person and built around them. Some people need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable, and support to do things themselves rather than have them done for them. We expect people to take on more as time goes on. For autistic residents especially, predictability does much of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and real choice will prevent far more distress than any reaction afterwards. Where somebody is having a hard time, we look first at what is being asked of them. Royston and the area around it are part of ordinary life here, not an outing. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch to arrange a visit.

- Care Home
Dugdale House is a residential care home in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, supporting adults living with learning disabilities and autism. Being a small house is the point of the place. With only a few people living here, staff know everybody properly rather than knowing a file about them, the week can be shaped around individuals rather than a rota, and somebody who needs quiet is actually able to find some. It also means the people who live here have real influence over how the house runs, from what gets cooked to how the shared rooms look and who comes to visit. We support people to do as much for themselves as they want and are able to, whether that is cooking, shopping, handling money, using local transport or keeping up with college, work and friendships. Where somebody needs a lot of support, we give it without making them feel lesser for needing it. Communication is planned around each individual, and we take change at a pace people can manage. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Baldock, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather tell you that ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. We are working through the points the inspectors raised, and if you are considering the home for someone close to you we will go through the report with you and answer whatever you want to ask. Please come and see the place as it really is. Talking to the people who live here, and to their families, will tell you more than we can.

Honister is a residential care home in Hatfield. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays. We are the size of place where everybody knows everybody. Staff know who is up early, who wants a late breakfast, who likes company and who would sooner be left with the radio. None of that appears in a policy, but it is most of what makes a care home somewhere a person could actually live. When somebody moves in we take time over their history. Work, family, places, music, faith, the things that shaped them. It helps us support people living with dementia and it helps our staff see a person rather than a set of needs. Dementia care here depends on familiarity and on not rushing. We keep staffing as steady as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what reassures a particular resident. Supporting mental health needs means patience and consistency, and working alongside community teams and GPs rather than in parallel with them. Meals are cooked here and residents tell us what they want on the menu. There is something going on most days and no obligation to join in. Families are welcome through the day and can stay for a meal. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the home and talk to the people living in it.

Ashlyns Care Home sits in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and offers residential care to older people who need a little more help than can comfortably be managed at home. We support residents living with dementia and those with a physical disability, and we also welcome people for respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a proper rest or to help someone regain their confidence after illness. We think a care home should feel like somewhere people live rather than somewhere people are kept. Residents set the shape of their own day. Breakfast happens when someone wakes, not when a rota says so. There is company to be found if it is wanted and peace to be had if it is not. Meals are cooked here, preferences are remembered, and nobody has to eat what they do not fancy. Support with dementia is something we take seriously and approach calmly. We learn about a person's history, their work, their family and the things that settle them, and we use that knowledge every day. Familiar routines, unhurried conversation and staff who know the person well do more good than any amount of policy. Families are part of the household here and are welcome whenever they wish to come. We keep relatives properly in the picture about health and wellbeing. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. You are very welcome to visit and judge the home for yourself.

Cherry Tree Manor is a residential care home in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. We care for older people, including many residents living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. As a residential setting our work is everyday life supported properly, with community health professionals brought in when they are needed. The quality of a care home shows in ordinary moments rather than in anything written about it. Whether a person is helped to get up at the hour they would choose. Whether the food is worth looking forward to. Whether the person helping you wash knows your name and something of your history. Whether anybody notices when you are out of sorts and acts on it. For residents living with dementia we keep staffing steady and the day predictable, and we ask families for the details of a life that make conversation possible. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. At Clare Lodge Care Home, we are proud to be part of the St Albans community in Hertfordshire, offering a warm and genuinely homely environment for older people who need support to live well. We specialise in residential care, dementia care and respite care, which means we support a wide range of people at different stages of their lives and their care journeys. Whether someone is joining us for a short break to allow family members to rest, or making Clare Lodge their permanent home, we work hard to make sure every person feels known, respected and comfortable from the moment they arrive. Dementia care sits at the heart of much of what we do. We understand how unsettling life can feel for someone living with dementia, and equally how worrying it can be for the families around them. Our approach is built around consistency, familiarity and genuine kindness, helping residents feel as settled and secure as possible day to day. Our team takes the time to get to know each resident properly, not just their care needs but their preferences, their histories and the things that bring them pleasure. That might be a particular type of music, a favourite meal or simply enjoying a quiet corner of the garden. These details matter to us enormously. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in an overall rating of Good, which reflects the standard of care we aim to provide every single day. We never see that as a reason to stand still, and we are always looking at how we can do things better for the people in our care. If you are considering care for yourself or someone you love, we would warmly welcome you to come and visit us and see Clare Lodge for yourself.

The Bungalow is a small residential care home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We support younger adults and older people, and we also offer respite stays for those who need support for a shorter period or whose usual carer needs a break. Being small is the point rather than a limitation. People here know each other and know the staff well, and daily life feels like a household rather than a service being delivered. Residents have their own rooms and a genuine say in how their days go, what they eat and how they spend their time. Our job is to support people to be as independent as they want to be. For some that means building skills around cooking, money, travel or work. For others it means steady, familiar support so that life stays comfortable and they can carry on doing what they enjoy. Support plans are written with each person, using whatever way of communicating suits them best, and we pay close attention to what helps someone feel settled and what causes them stress. We are part of the local community rather than separate from it, and we support people to get out to the shops, to clubs and to see family and friends. Willow Court is a residential care home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. We support older people and some younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody actually has. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

Moti Willow is a residential care home in Radlett, Hertfordshire. We support adults with mental health needs, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who need residential support for a short period. This house is about stability and moving forward rather than simply somewhere to stay. Everyone here has a plan worked out with us covering what they want their life to include, what helps when things become difficult and what they would like us to do if they become unwell. Agreeing that in advance means nobody is trying to work it out in the middle of a crisis. Day to day, residents run their own lives as far as they want and are able to. Cooking, managing money, keeping appointments, work, study, family contact and simply having somewhere settled to be. We are here to support those things rather than take them over, and where somebody wants to move on to more independent living we plan for it properly instead of leaving it as a vague ambition. Our team stays consistent, which matters a great deal here, because knowing somebody well is what allows you to notice an early change and respond gently. Any restriction on a person's freedom is agreed properly, recorded and kept under review. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Professionals, families and prospective residents are welcome to visit.

The Laurel is a small residential care home in St. Albans. We support adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We think a good home is one where the people living in it are genuinely in charge of the ordinary things. What is for tea, what time the music goes on, whether today is a day for going out or a day for staying in. Staff are there to make those choices possible, not to manage them away. Where someone wants to take on more for themselves, whether that is cooking, shopping, using the bus or holding down a job or a college course, we support it steadily and without fuss. St. Albans is a good place to live and we use it. People here get out to the shops, the parks, the leisure centre and the cafes, and keep up the interests and friendships they had before they moved in. We work closely with families and with the professionals involved, and we keep the communication going both ways. The Care Quality Commission has not yet published an overall rating for The Laurel. We are happy to talk through how we work, how we staff the house and how we support people who communicate in ways other than speech. | Nursing care Middle half of prices from 17 East homes. Median £1,935. | Varies by council | £1,800 to £2,126 |
| Residential dementia care Middle half of prices from 33 East homes. Median £1,785. | Not published separately | £1,602 to £1,877 |
| Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940. | Not published separately | £1,870 to £2,100 |
Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.
Arranging and funding a care home place in Hertfordshire
Two questions usually need answering before a shortlist means anything: what level of care is genuinely required, and who is going to pay for it. Both are settled through the same process, and families who begin it early find they have choices rather than whatever happens to be available.
Beginning with an assessment of need
Any adult who appears to need care and support may ask for a care needs assessment, and no savings test applies before one is carried out. Hertfordshire County Council is responsible for completing that assessment and for arranging funded support where a person meets the national eligibility criteria. The assessment covers washing, dressing, eating, medication, mobility and overnight safety, and produces a written record that is worth having even where the family expects to pay privately, because it makes clear whether a residential setting is the right answer at all. Anyone providing regular unpaid support can request a carer assessment in parallel.
What a place is likely to cost
Where the council is asked to contribute, a financial assessment follows and takes account of income, savings and other capital. A person whose capital sits above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the fee in full, while those below it pay on a sliding scale. Weekly fees differ from home to home across Hertfordshire and generally reflect room size, whether the room has its own bathroom, and how much individual attention a resident needs. Ask for the fee in writing before committing, together with a list of what is charged separately, the notice period on each side, and how often fees are reviewed.
Choosing between care homes in Hertfordshire
180 homes is a wide field, and the ratings attached to them are wider than in most counties, which changes how the list should be read.
Ratings that stretch across the whole scale
Every judgement here is published by the Care Quality Commission, and this list contains homes rated Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate, plus a number not yet rated. That spread makes the rating a genuinely useful filter rather than a formality. A Good rating means inspectors found the home met the standards tested, while Requires Improvement means shortfalls were identified that the provider was expected to put right. An Inadequate judgement is serious and normally brings the home under closer oversight, so anyone considering one should read the report in full and ask directly what has changed since the visit. Homes shown as not yet rated, among them Elm View Care Home and Meadowbrook Care Home, are usually newer registrations awaiting a first inspection.
Visiting with the right questions ready
Ratings will narrow the field but they will not tell you how a home feels on a wet Tuesday afternoon. Go at a mealtime, watch how staff speak to people who cannot easily reply, and ask how many carers are on duty overnight compared with the day. Ask how long the registered manager has been in post and how much the rota depends on agency staff, since continuity shapes daily life more than furnishings do. Homes such as Tanners Wood, Osbourne Court, Ganwick House and Ashlyns Care Home hold a Good rating on this listing, though two homes rated alike can still suit very different people. Keep travelling time in mind as well, because the relatives who visit most often are the ones for whom the journey is easy.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in Hertfordshire
How is a care needs assessment arranged in Hertfordshire?
Contact adult social care at Hertfordshire County Council and ask for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support has a right to one whatever their income or savings, and a relative may request it on the person's behalf with their agreement. The assessment considers daily tasks, mobility, medication and how safe someone is alone at night, and ends in a written record of the support needed. Where the person is in hospital, the ward can refer directly, which usually brings the assessment forward.
Will Hertfordshire County Council fund a residential placement?
It may, provided the person satisfies both the care eligibility criteria and the financial assessment that follows. Hertfordshire County Council looks at income, savings and other capital to decide how much the person contributes towards the cost of a place. Those with capital above the national threshold are generally expected to fund the placement themselves, although they can still ask for an assessment and for advice on choosing a home. Where the council contributes, it agrees a personal budget intended to meet the needs it has assessed.
Which homes appear on this Hertfordshire listing?
This page gathers one hundred and seventy five residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission to operate in Hertfordshire. They provide accommodation with personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals and medication, with staff present day and night. The list runs from large purpose built homes to small houses supporting a handful of residents, including providers such as Greenhill Care Home, Dunsland House and Hazel End Care Home. Every entry shows the current rating and links to the published inspection report.
What separates a residential care home from a nursing home?
A residential care home supports people with the ordinary tasks of daily life, with care staff on site at all hours but no nurses based on the premises. A nursing home provides that same support alongside clinical care from registered nurses, which suits people with complex medication needs, wounds or conditions requiring regular clinical oversight. Every home on this Hertfordshire page is registered for residential care rather than nursing. If nursing input looks likely before long, ask whether community nurses can visit or whether a further move would eventually be needed.
When should a family start looking at homes?
Before the need becomes urgent, ideally while the current arrangement is still holding together. Starting early leaves time to visit more than once, read inspection reports properly and join a waiting list where a home is oversubscribed. Searches that begin around a hospital discharge date tend to end with whichever home has a room free that week rather than the one that fits best. Even a provisional shortlist of three or four homes makes a sudden decision far less pressured.
What is worth asking during a visit to a Hertfordshire care home?
Ask about staffing levels by day and overnight, how long the manager has been in post, and how much the home relies on agency cover. Ask to see a week of menus and a recent activity plan, and find out what happens if a resident wants to get up late or eat at a different time. Request the weekly fee in writing with everything charged on top clearly listed, along with the notice period and the approach to annual increases. It is also sensible to ask how the home contacts families when something changes and how concerns are dealt with.
