Hertfordshire is set out here in one place, with the care homes registered across the county gathered into a single listing that can be sorted and compared rather than trawled through. Inspection outcomes run the full length of the scale, because the Care Quality Commission has awarded Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate among these homes, while a further group has yet to receive a published rating. One hundred and seventy five residential care homes match the search, each registered for personal care and everyday support rather than nursing delivered on site. Hertfordshire County Council carries out the care needs assessment that establishes what support a person requires, and arranges funded help for those who meet the eligibility rules. Given how widely the judgements differ here, treat a rating as the start of the enquiry rather than the end of it. Open the profiles that draw you in, read the inspection report sitting behind each one, and let the evidence rather than the brochure settle where you visit.

We are Greenbanks, a residential care home in Watford, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss, and we also offer respite stays. We want this to be a home in which people continue to be themselves. That means choice over the small things as well as the large ones: when to get up, what to wear, where to sit, whether to join in or have a quiet day. It means keeping in touch with family, faith and friends, and it means staff who know somebody's history well enough to hold a proper conversation with them. We must be straightforward about our current position. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have discussed them openly with our staff team, with residents and with families, and we are working through them methodically. Improvement in a care home comes from training, supervision, audit and attention to detail repeated over time, and that is the work we are doing rather than a set of promises. We would rather tell you this ourselves than have you find it elsewhere. If you are considering a care home in the Watford area, please come and visit us, ask what has improved and what has not, and judge us on what you find.

We are Walsingham Support at Ashley Close in Hemel Hempstead, a residential home supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including younger adults and older people, and people with a physical disability. We also offer respite stays. The house is run so that the people living in it make the everyday decisions: what is cooked, how the day is spent, whether today is one for going out or staying in, who comes to visit. Staff are here to make those choices workable and to step back from what somebody can manage alone or wants to learn to manage. Communication gets close attention. Several of the people we support get their point across in ways other than speech, and understanding a person properly is what allows them to direct their own life rather than have it organised around them. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We would rather put that in front of you than leave you to discover it. We know which areas were raised, work is under way, and we will go through the detail with any family considering us or already trusting us with a relative. If you are looking for a place or a respite stay in Hertfordshire, please get in touch and come and see the house for yourself.

Here at Martins House, we offer a warm and welcoming home for the people who live with us in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. We are proud to have been rated "Good" by the Care Quality Commission, and we see that as a reflection of the genuine effort our whole team puts into making daily life here feel comfortable, safe and meaningful. We support older people, those living with dementia, and younger adults who need residential care. We understand that each person who comes to live with us brings their own story, their own routines and their own preferences, and we take the time to get to know what matters most to each individual. Care here is not one size fits all. We work closely with residents and their families to make sure the support we provide truly fits the person receiving it. For those living with dementia, we know how much the right environment and the right approach can make a difference. Our team is experienced in supporting people through the various stages of dementia, always focusing on maintaining dignity, familiarity and as much independence as possible. For younger adults, we recognise that moving into a care home can feel like an unfamiliar step, and we go out of our way to make sure life here feels as normal and fulfilling as it can be. Social connections, meaningful activity and a genuine sense of belonging matter to us. Families are always welcome at Martins House. We believe that staying involved and informed is important, and we aim to keep communication open and honest at all times. If you are considering Martins House for yourself or someone you care about, we would be very happy to welcome you for a visit and show you around. Mountbatten Lodge is a residential care home in Hemel Hempstead, providing a comfortable place to live for older people and younger adults who need support nearby. We try to keep the feel of a household, with days shaped by the people living them rather than by a timetable on the wall. We support residents living with dementia and people living with a physical disability. For residents living with dementia we keep routines familiar, explain changes before they happen, work at each person's pace and look for the cause when somebody is unsettled. Where a resident has a physical disability, our aim is to remove the obstacle rather than narrow what they do. Our team helps with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and equally with conversation, company, fresh air and music for those who want them. Rooms are personalised and relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period, or for families who need a rest. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are looking at care homes in this part of Hertfordshire, please come and see us at an ordinary time of day and ask whatever you would like.

- Care Home
Oakfield House in Watford is a residential home for adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, most of them younger adults. We also offer respite stays. People live here for years rather than months, so we run the house as their household and think of ourselves as part of it. The people who live here decide how their rooms look, have a genuine say in what goes on the shopping list and what gets cooked, and shape the week around what they want to do. We would rather help somebody do a thing for themselves slowly than do it for them quickly, and that choice, made over and over, is most of what this home is. Support with personal care, medication, health appointments, money and getting about is given exactly as each person has agreed, and recorded in enough detail that a colleague new to a shift can get a morning right without being told. For anybody who finds change difficult, that consistency is the ground everything else stands on. Communication is where the real work lies. Not everybody here uses speech, and understanding how a person shows a preference, a worry or a refusal is what makes choice genuine rather than nominal. We learn each person's way, write it down, and check our understanding instead of assuming it. We are registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission, and anyone who would like to know how we would support a particular person is welcome to ask.

- Care Home
Tara's Retreat Care Home is in St Albans. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, along with respite and short stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to be one. What we offer is a comfortable house where older people are properly looked after, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own routines and decide for themselves how much they want to be part of what is going on. Dementia care here rests on familiarity. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, we do not rush anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what calms a particular person, because it differs from one resident to the next. Families often find this stage hard, and we make time for them too, with honest conversations rather than reassurance for its own sake. Meals are cooked on the premises and residents tell us what they would like to see on the menu. There is something going on most days for those who want it, and no obligation for those who do not. We work closely with local GPs and district nurses so that changes in health are noticed early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome through the day, and you need not arrange it in advance.

Elmside is a residential care home in Hitchin for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, and what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing the people who live here as individuals rather than as a list of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult to manage, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet room with the door closed. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to understand what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Mealtimes matter here. Food is cooked on the premises, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried along. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a break, to help somebody build strength back up after illness, or to let a person see what living here is like before making a longer decision. You are welcome to visit, look round and ask us whatever you want to know.

We at Sloe Hill Residential Home offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the historic market town of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, where compassionate support meets a genuine sense of community. Our home has been thoughtfully designed to feel like a true home from home for every resident who joins us. Nestled in the heart of Hitchin within the SG postcode area, our home benefits from the charm of one of Hertfordshire's most beloved towns. Residents enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of a well established community, whilst still being close to local amenities, green spaces, and the familiar rhythms of town life. The setting allows families to visit easily and continue to be an active part of their loved one's daily life. Our specialisms reflect the varied needs of the people we support. We provide dedicated older person care for those who benefit from a gentle, structured environment where dignity and independence remain at the forefront of everything we do. Our residential care is built around the belief that each person's story, preferences, and routines matter, and we take the time to truly know every individual in our care. We also welcome younger adults who require residential support, recognising that care needs are not defined by age alone. For these residents, we focus on maintaining meaningful engagement, personal goals, and a lifestyle that reflects their identity and aspirations. Respite care is another important part of what we offer. Whether a family carer needs a well earned break, someone is recovering following a hospital stay, or a loved one simply wishes to trial life within a supportive community, our respite stays provide a seamless and reassuring experience. Families often tell us how much peace of mind this brings, knowing their relative is cared for in a safe, attentive environment. In practice, this blend of specialisms means our team is experienced in adapting to a wide range of personal circumstances. From tailored daily routines to sensitive support with personal care, mealtimes, mobility, and social activities, our approach is always centred on the individual. We believe good care is about small, consistent acts of kindness as much as it is about clinical competence. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection, carried out in May 2025, awarded us a Good rating across every domain assessed. This includes Good ratings for being Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. For families, this consistent recognition offers meaningful reassurance that the care delivered here meets the high standards expected by the regulator, and that our leadership, staff practice, and resident experience all reflect that commitment. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions that come with it. We at Sloe Hill Residential Home warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and discover whether our home might be the right next chapter for your loved one. Whatever stage you are at in your search, we are here to listen, guide, and support you with honesty and compassion.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in St Albans, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed, because what a person can still manage themselves is worth protecting. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. That knowledge is worth more than any written plan when somebody is frightened or cannot place where they are. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round before deciding anything. We will be straight with you about whether we can meet the needs you describe.

Acacia Mews Care Home is a residential home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, caring for older people and for younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. We offer permanent residential care and shorter respite stays, so we can help when home has stopped feeling safe, when a family carer needs a planned break, or when somebody needs time to regain confidence after a hospital admission. Moving into a home is a significant step and we try to make the first weeks gentle, which mostly means listening carefully rather than organising quickly. Our care follows the person. We ask about the work someone did, the places they have lived, the food they actually enjoy, the routines they have kept for years and what they would still rather do themselves, and we shape their support around those answers. For residents living with dementia we keep familiar faces around them, allow plenty of time and look for the reason behind distress instead of simply settling it. Where somebody has a physical disability we work out together how to make the day as independent as it can be. Meals are cooked here and requests are welcome. Relatives can visit through the day and we would rather ring you with news than leave you to ask. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and see us if you are looking at homes in the area.

Windmill Lodge is a residential care home in Buntingford, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults alongside older people. We are a house rather than an institution, and being small is the point. Staff get to know the people they support properly, which is worth more than any written plan, and the household runs around the people living in it instead of around a rota. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. Support is agreed with each person. Some need help with personal care and health needs. Others mainly want somebody alongside them so that a demanding world becomes manageable, and support to do things for themselves rather than have them done. We expect people to take on more over time rather than settle into being looked after. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event. Buntingford and the country around it are part of ordinary life here, not an outing. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Westbourne Care Home is in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Supporting such a mixed group under one roof takes planning rather than luck. A younger adult with a learning disability working towards more independence and an older resident living with dementia want very different things from a week, and support here is built around the individual rather than around a single house routine. What we provide is residential care. Staff are on duty day and night to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals, while doctors and district nurses come in for clinical needs. For residents living with dementia we keep the day in a familiar order, keep the staff group as steady as we can and take time to learn about the person's earlier life. For autistic residents we pay attention to predictable routine, clear information and honest notice before anything changes. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring to arrange a visit.

Rose Vale is a small residential home in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, including younger adults moving into a home of their own for the first time. We also offer respite stays, planned in advance so that a short stay is a visit somewhere familiar. We run the house as the residents' home rather than as our workplace. People choose how their bedrooms look, have a real say in the meals and the shopping, and get involved in cooking, laundry and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and managing money, and it covers getting out to the things people care about, whether that is a job, a course, a gym, a club or seeing family. We pay close attention to how each person communicates and to what makes a day feel manageable. Predictable routines, clear information given in good time, and staff who understand somebody's particular sensitivities all make a genuine difference, so we get those details right and record what works. Where somebody becomes distressed we look at why rather than simply managing the behaviour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. St Joseph's Care Home is a residential care home in Tring, Hertfordshire, caring for older people including many living with dementia. We also take respite bookings for people who need a stay of a few weeks, whether to recover after hospital or to give a family carer a proper break. We run an unhurried home. People get up when they choose, keep their own belongings around them, eat food that is worth sitting down to and spend the day as suits them. There is company and something going on for those who want it, and a quiet corner for those who would rather have their own, and neither choice needs explaining. With dementia, steadiness does most of the work. Familiar faces, a predictable shape to the day, calm surroundings and time given rather than rushed. We learn about people's earlier lives from them and from their families, because knowing who somebody has been changes how you talk with them now, and where a person becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than reaching for a label. Our staff know the people living here, which is how a change in health gets noticed early and taken to the GP or district nurse before it turns serious. Families are welcome whenever suits them. Hazel End Care Home is a residential care home in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. We look after older people who can no longer manage at home, including a good number of residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people recovering from illness or giving a family carer a rest. Coming into a care home usually follows a difficult period, so we take the settling in slowly. We ask about the routines of a lifetime, what someone likes to eat and when, whether they are early risers or would rather have a lie in, and we fit around that instead of the other way round. Rooms are people's own, filled with their own belongings, and nobody comes in without knocking. The days here are not heavily timetabled. Some residents want company, cards, music and a trip out. Others want the newspaper and peace. Both are entirely reasonable and both are available. Where someone is living with dementia, familiarity is what helps most, so we keep staffing consistent and learn each person's history properly. When someone becomes distressed we look for the reason behind it. We work closely with local GPs and community nurses so that health changes are picked up early, and we keep families in the picture as a matter of course. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. You are welcome to visit at any reasonable time.

Nestled within the SG postcode area of Stevenage, our setting offers the best of both worlds: the convenience of a well connected Hertfordshire town with the calm of a residential community. Families visiting loved ones can easily reach us, whilst residents benefit from a peaceful environment where they can truly settle in and feel at home. Our communal spaces are designed to encourage social connection, quiet reflection, and the simple everyday pleasures that make a house feel like a home. Our specialisms in older person care, residential care, dementia care, and support for those with a physical disability mean that we are equipped to meet a wide range of needs with sensitivity and skill. For families navigating a dementia diagnosis, we understand how daunting the road ahead can feel. Our team takes time to learn each resident's life story, preferences, and routines, allowing us to provide person centred support that preserves dignity and identity. For those living with a physical disability, our focus is on enabling independence wherever possible, ensuring that daily life remains rich, purposeful, and full of choice. Residential care at Jubilee Court is built around relationships. We believe that good care begins with genuinely knowing the people we support, from favourite meals and treasured memories to the small daily rituals that bring comfort. Families are warmly encouraged to remain closely involved, and we work in partnership with relatives to ensure that every resident feels loved, listened to, and understood. Following our most recent CQC inspection in December 2022, Jubilee Court received an overall rating of Good, with Good ratings across the Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led domains. The Safe domain was rated as Requires Improvement, and we take this feedback seriously, using it as a driver for ongoing improvement and learning. For families, the overall Good rating reflects a home where compassionate, effective, and responsive care is delivered every day, and where leadership is committed to continually raising standards. Choosing the right care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. If you are exploring residential or dementia care in Stevenage for someone you love, we warmly invite you to get in touch, arrange a visit, and see for yourself the gentle, attentive community we have built at Jubilee Court. We would be honoured to welcome you and to support your family through this next chapter with kindness, openness, and care.

At Old Grange, we provide residential care for people in the heart of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Our home supports older adults, younger adults, and people living with a learning disability or autism, and we also offer respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether planned or at short notice. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone walks through our door, we want them to feel at ease. We take time to understand each person properly, their routines, their preferences, the small things that matter to them, because getting those details right is what makes a house feel like a home. Our team works hard to create an environment that feels genuinely homely and calm. We support people to maintain their independence wherever possible and to stay connected to the things and people they love. Care is planned around the individual, and we review it regularly to make sure it continues to reflect what each person needs and wants. We are pleased that our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission resulted in a rating of Good across our home. We see that as encouragement to keep doing what we do well, while always looking at where we can improve. If you are considering Old Grange for yourself or someone close to you, we would warmly encourage you to come and visit us. Seeing the home in person, meeting the team, and having a proper conversation is always the best way to get a real sense of whether we are the right fit. We are always happy to answer questions and to talk things through at whatever pace feels right for you.

We are a residential care home in Stevenage, and we try to run the place as a home first. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own hours where they can, and carry on with the things that made the day feel like theirs before they moved in. We support older people and younger adults who need help with personal care, mobility and the ordinary business of daily life. We care for people living with dementia, and what we have found makes the real difference is not a particular method but steady, familiar staff who know someone well enough to spot a change early and head off a difficult afternoon before it arrives. We also support people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, thinking carefully about how a room is set up and how we communicate so that independence is not quietly eroded by small obstacles. Respite stays are available too, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to let someone try the home before committing to a longer stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would far rather a resident or relative told us about a problem while it is still small, so we ask often and we act on what we hear. Please do come and visit. A look round and a cup of tea will tell you more than anything on a page.

Lammasmead is a residential care home in Broxbourne supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a household rather than an institution, and the people who live here have a real say in how their own home is run. Support is planned around the individual. Some of the people here need help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for routine, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what they find overwhelming. We take our time at the start, and we ask the people who know somebody best rather than relying on a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary things: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, deciding what to do at the weekend and getting out into the local area. We support people to do as much for themselves as they can and want to, which sometimes means standing back and letting a task take longer than it would if we simply did it. Our staff are trained for the individuals they support, including communication and positive ways of responding when somebody is distressed, and we keep the team consistent because trust builds over months. Respite stays are available. Please contact us if you would like to look round.

The Chadwick is a residential care home in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We try to run this as a home rather than an institution. People keep their own routines, bring their own things and make their own decisions about the shape of the day, and our job is to provide the right amount of practical help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility without quietly taking over what somebody can still do themselves. Dementia care is a large part of what we do. We spend time learning about each person's life, habits and the things that settle them, and we keep the environment calm and staffing as consistent as we can. Where a resident has a sight or hearing impairment, we adapt how we communicate and are careful about keeping the building and their room arranged as they expect, because small changes cause disproportionate difficulty. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around it. We know which areas were identified, we are working through them with the whole team, and if you come to see us we will tell you honestly where we have got to and what is still in hand. Families are welcome at The Chadwick, and we would rather hear a concern early than late.

That is why we take time to get to know each resident as an individual, learning about their life, their preferences, and what matters most to them. Good care, in our view, starts with listening. Birchwood Bungalow is a small residential care home in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Being small is the point. Everyone who lives here knows everyone else, staff know how each person likes their day to run, and nobody gets lost in a crowd. We support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own, and we also care for older people who need residential support. The mix works because we plan around individuals rather than categories. Some of the people who live here need a steady hand with personal care and medication. Others mainly need the confidence that comes from knowing someone is there, and support to get out to college, to work, to the shops or to see family. Independence is something we take seriously rather than something we print on a wall. People cook, shop, choose their own furniture and decide how they spend a Saturday. Where someone finds change difficult we keep routines predictable and give plenty of warning, and where communication is hard we learn the person's way of communicating rather than expecting them to learn ours. We also offer respite stays, which give families a break and give the person staying with us a proper change of scene. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking for a placement, for yourself, a relative or someone you support, please come and visit. It is much easier to judge a home by standing in it.

We are Heath Lodge in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. We provide both residential and nursing care for older people, including those living with dementia and people living with mental health conditions, and we also support younger adults with nursing needs. Respite stays are available. Because we offer residential and nursing care together, people do not have to move on when their health needs increase. Families are often anxious about exactly that, and it is why we work at keeping our nursing team stable rather than relying on a constant stream of agency cover. Nursing settings can easily feel clinical, so we push against it. People get up when they want, eat what they like, sit where they choose and keep their own furniture, pictures and habits. We ask about the details of a life, the work someone did, the music they like, the hour they prefer to be left in peace, and we write those things into how we work so they survive a change of shift. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail: knowing a person's history, recognising early what unsettles them, going at their pace rather than the timetable's. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

- Care Home
Pinewood Lodge is a residential care home in Watford, supporting older adults and some younger adults. We look after residents living with dementia and residents with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Our aim is that people keep as much of their own life as possible when they come here. Their own routines, their own belongings, their own preferences about food and company and how the day should go, and support to carry on doing whatever they can still manage themselves. Taking over is quicker and it is rarely the right answer. For residents living with dementia we rely on familiarity, a steady rhythm to the day, and staff who will give somebody the time to respond in their own way rather than filling the silence for them. When a resident is distressed we look for the reason behind it, because there almost always is one. Respite guests become part of the household from the day they arrive. For many people a short stay is their first experience of a care home, and we would like it to be reassuring rather than something endured. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Families are welcome to visit without arranging it beforehand, and anyone considering a place here should come and see the home for themselves.

Ashwood Place is a care home in Hitchin. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Where somebody has a physical disability as well as a learning disability, the risk in any care setting is that life quietly narrows in the name of safety. It is always easier to bring things to a person than to get them out. We try to notice when that is happening, because support that shrinks a person's world is not good care however tidy the paperwork looks. The people living here have a genuine say in the ordinary decisions. What is bought and cooked, how their rooms look, where they go and who comes to visit. Where somebody wants to build a skill or take on something new, we put effort behind it rather than recording it as an aim. Communication gets the most attention. Where speech is not how a person tells us things, we learn the way they do. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

We at Elstree View Care Home are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the heart of Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, where compassionate support meets everyday comfort. Our home has been thoughtfully designed to be a place where residents feel truly at ease, whether they are joining us for long term residential care, specialist dementia support, or a shorter respite stay. Set within the friendly community of Borehamwood in the WD postcode area, our home benefits from the calm, suburban character of this well connected corner of Hertfordshire. Residents and their loved ones enjoy the reassurance of familiar local surroundings, with the wider East of England on the doorstep. The setting encourages a gentle pace of life, allowing visits from family and friends to feel relaxed and unhurried. Inside, we focus on creating spaces that feel like home rather than an institution. Comfortable communal lounges provide places to chat, read, or share a cup of tea, whilst quieter areas offer moments of calm for reflection or one to one time with visiting relatives. Every detail, from lighting to layout, is considered with our residents in mind, particularly those living with sensory impairments or reduced mobility. Our care approach is built around the individual. We specialise in supporting older people, including those living with dementia, and we also welcome younger adults and residents with physical disabilities or visual and hearing impairments. In practice, this means our team takes time to understand each person's history, preferences, and daily routines, tailoring support so that independence and dignity are always at the centre of the day. Families can feel confident that their loved one is known as a person, not simply a resident. For those living with dementia, we provide a calm, structured environment where familiar routines and gentle stimulation help to reduce anxiety and promote wellbeing. Our respite care offers a valuable option for families who need short term support, whether following a hospital stay, during a family holiday, or simply to allow a regular carer a well earned rest. Whatever the length of stay, our commitment to warm, attentive care remains the same. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, which is why our CQC rating matters. Following the latest inspection in August 2023, Elstree View Care Home was rated Good overall, with Good ratings across all five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This independent recognition reflects the everyday dedication of our team and the standards we hold ourselves to, offering families genuine reassurance that their loved one is in capable and caring hands. If you are exploring care options for someone dear to you, we warmly invite you to get in touch. Whether you have a specific question, would like to arrange a visit, or simply want to talk through what life at Elstree View could look like, our door is always open. We are here to listen, to guide, and to help your family feel supported every step of the way.

We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for those who need a short stay with us. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family will ever make, and we do not take that trust lightly. We are a short break centre in Welwyn Garden City, providing residential support for adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and younger adults. Short breaks are what we do, and we think they deserve to be done properly rather than treated as a stopgap. A stay here should give the person coming to us something worth having, which means company, activities they have chosen, a change of surroundings and support from people who understand what they need. It should also give family carers a real rest, and that only works if they can hand over without worrying. We spend time getting to know someone before their first stay. How they communicate, what settles them, what unsettles them, how they like their day to run, what help they want with personal care and medicines and what they would much rather do themselves. All of that is recorded clearly so support does not vary depending on who is on shift, and so a returning visitor finds things much as they left them. Familiarity matters here more than almost anywhere. People come back to us over months and years, and we work hard to keep the same team around them so each stay feels like returning somewhere known. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit, meet the team and ask us anything before arranging a stay.

We run two homes on Church Lane in Rickmansworth, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Those living with us include younger adults and older people, and we also offer respite stays. Running two houses next to each other has a particular advantage. Each stays small enough that the people living in it are genuinely known rather than nominally known, while there is still company and activity next door for anybody who wants it. Being properly known is the thing a small home can offer that a large one struggles to. People arrange their own rooms, have a real say in the food and the shopping, and are involved in how the household runs. Where somebody communicates differently, whether because of a sensory impairment or for any other reason, we sort that out properly at the start, because everything else rests on it. We are careful about routine and about explaining change in good time, since for many of the people here that is what makes a day workable. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change, and we would rather deal with a small complaint now than a serious one later.

St Michaels House is a residential care home in Welwyn Garden City. We support older people and younger adults, including people with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays. Supporting people with such different needs under one roof only works if nobody is treated as a category. We take each person as they come, learn how they want their day to go and build support around that. Some residents want a lot of company and occupation. Others want quiet and predictability. There is room here for both. The building is arranged so that people with reduced mobility or restricted sight can get about safely and independently, and our staff are trained in moving and handling and in supporting people who communicate differently. Where somebody uses signing, pictures or objects, we learn their way rather than expecting them to learn ours. For autistic residents we keep routines stable and flag any change well in advance. Where sight or hearing is affected we pay attention to lighting, contrast, sound and how we announce ourselves before doing anything. We involve families and advocates as much as each person wants, hold regular residents meetings and act on what is raised. If something is not working we would far rather be told early. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round and talk to the people who live here.

Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. That is a wide range of needs under one roof, and it only works if we plan around individuals rather than running one routine for everyone. Somebody who wants a busy, sociable day and somebody who needs quiet and a predictable rhythm can both live well here, provided we pay proper attention to who needs what. We are Elm View Care Home in Bishop's Stortford. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. Moving into a care home is a considerable upheaval, and we try to make it feel less like an ending than it can appear. For people living with dementia, most of the useful work is in the detail. Knowing somebody's history and the job they did. Recognising early what tends to unsettle them. Being willing to go at their pace rather than the rota's. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Until we have, please come and see the home and ask us detailed questions about staffing, training and how care is planned here. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we tell them when something has changed rather than waiting to be asked.

Auburn Mere is a residential care home in Watford, Hertfordshire. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with visual or hearing impairment. We offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We aim to be a home rather than an institution. Residents bring their own furniture and belongings, keep their own routines and decide how the day goes, and our job is to give the right amount of help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility without quietly taking over what somebody can still manage themselves. Dementia care is a substantial part of our work. We take time to learn each person's history, habits and the things that reassure them, because that knowledge is what allows staff to respond well in a difficult moment rather than simply react to it. A calm environment, familiar faces and a predictable rhythm do most of the rest. Where a resident has a physical disability we make sure equipment is properly set up and that staff use it confidently, and where there is a sight or hearing impairment we adapt how we communicate and keep things arranged as the person expects. Respite stays are planned with the same attention as any other admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, which we treat as a foundation rather than a finish. You are very welcome to visit Auburn Mere and see the home on an ordinary day.

Fosse House is a care home in St Albans in Hertfordshire. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. We want this to feel like a house people live in rather than somewhere they have been sent. Visitors come at the times that suit them. There is usually something going on that nobody has to join. Staff sit down and talk properly rather than passing through on the way to the next job. People here decide when they get up, what they wear, what they eat and whether they want company or their own space. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than trying to smooth it over. Relatives often know precisely what helps, and we would much rather be told at the beginning than work it out over months. Where a physical disability affects how somebody gets about, we work around the person rather than expecting them to fit the building, and we are careful that help with one thing does not slide into doing everything. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and relatives where we still fall short.

- Care Home
Libury Hall is a residential care home near Ware in Hertfordshire. We support older people, including people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for people needing care for a short period. Supporting mental health in a residential setting is largely a matter of steadiness rather than intervention. We keep to arrangements we have made. We notice when somebody seems unlike themselves without turning it into an interrogation. We make it easy to talk to us without a formal appointment, and we are as reliable on the difficult weeks as on the good ones. Progress is rarely a straight line and our job is not to be surprised by that. This is people's home and we treat it accordingly. Rooms are theirs to arrange. People decide how their days go, who they see, whether they want company or their own space. We knock before we come in, we ask rather than assume, and we are quite prepared to be disagreed with. Being treated as an adult with your own view of your own life is not an extra here. Where people are working with community mental health teams, GPs or social workers, we join up with them properly rather than running alongside them, and we raise concerns early. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection.

For families, this offers the reassurance that their loved one is not simply cared for, but truly known. Alongside long term residential care, we also provide respite care, offering short stays that give family carers a well deserved break whilst ensuring their loved one continues to receive attentive, compassionate support in a safe environment. The Care Quality Commission has rated our home as Good overall, with Good ratings across all five key areas of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This consistent standard reflects our ongoing commitment to safe practice, effective support, genuine kindness, responsive care that adapts to changing needs, and thoughtful leadership that keeps residents at the heart of every decision. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the weight of that choice. We warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and arrange a visit to see for yourself the community we have built here in Bricket Wood. Guysfield Residential Home is a care home in Letchworth Garden City in Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period. Coming to live in a care home is a significant thing to do, and the first weeks matter more than any account of the building. We spend them learning about the person rather than settling them into our routine. What they did for a living, what they cannot be doing with, what time they have always had their breakfast, whether they would rather be in company or left in peace with the radio on. Those are small facts, and together they are most of what makes somewhere feel like home. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than simply trying to settle them. Relatives very often know exactly what helps, and we would far rather be told at the beginning. We take the practical side seriously too. Food worth looking forward to, medication handled carefully, prompt attention when somebody is unwell, and plain conversations with families when things change. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

Meadow Acres is a residential care home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with a learning disability and adults with a physical disability. We also offer respite stays. The house is small and the support is built around individuals rather than around a routine, because the people living here want different things from their week and it would be no good pretending otherwise. We take time to understand how each person communicates, what they can do independently, where they want a hand and what makes a day harder, and we write support plans with them in language that is actually theirs. Where someone has a physical disability, the quality of the care is in the detail of how help is given with washing, dressing and moving, not simply in whether it happens. Our aim is that people here are supported to do things rather than having things done to them, and that includes taking ordinary risks that make life worth having. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we would rather say so here than have someone find it elsewhere. We have an agreed plan for the areas identified and are working through it. Anyone considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what is still in progress.

Courtland Lodge is a residential care home in Watford. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. We try to keep the home feeling like somewhere people live rather than somewhere they are placed. There is no reason a move into care should mean giving up a lie in, a favourite chair, a preferred way of taking tea or the freedom to shut your own door. People bring their own belongings, choose how they spend the day, and join in with what is on offer only if they want to. Physical disability and dementia both need patience and consistency from a staff team. We take time to find out how someone likes to be helped, how much they can do for themselves and what makes them feel rushed, and we write that down so that the answer does not change with the shift. Families in Hertfordshire often come to us at a difficult point, having managed at home for a long time. We try to make the move as steady as we can, and we keep relatives properly involved afterwards rather than only ringing with bad news. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Beau Sejour is a residential care home in St Albans, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, adults with a learning disability or autism, people living with a mental health condition and those with a physical disability. We also offer respite care for planned short stays. Supporting that range of people well means refusing to run the house to a single timetable, so we do not. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, where they spend their time and how much they join in with what is going on. Company and activity are offered rather than imposed, and someone who wants a quiet afternoon in their own room is not a problem to be solved. Before anybody moves in we spend time with them and with the people who know them best, because the small details are what decide how quickly a person settles, and they shape how we support somebody from the first day rather than sitting unread in a file. Dementia support runs through the whole home. We keep surroundings familiar, avoid rushing anyone, and take time to understand what settles a particular resident. Where somebody has a learning disability, autism or a physical disability, we adapt how we communicate and how the home is arranged so that the building and the routine work for them. Respite stays are planned with the same thought as a permanent move. Visitors are welcome and we would rather families felt at home here. Please contact us if you would like to look round.

We are a residential care home in Watford, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. We also offer respite stays where a short break is what is needed rather than a permanent move. Our job is to run a house where people live their own lives with the support they need, not a place that organises those lives for them. In practice that means paying close attention to how each person communicates, what they need from their surroundings, what turns a manageable day into a difficult one and what helps when that happens. It also means handling change carefully. Notice, explanation and a week that keeps its shape are not niceties here, they are what make coping possible. Supporting younger adults means taking seriously that people are at the start of things. Some want to learn to do more for themselves, to work, to study or eventually to live somewhere more independent, and our job is to support that rather than settle everybody into a comfortable routine. Where somebody can do something themselves, even slowly, we would far rather they did. We work closely with families and with the professionals involved, because families in particular usually understand a person better than any assessment does. If you are considering a placement or a short break here, please get in touch and we will talk it through openly with you.

People living here have their own rooms, their own belongings and a real say in how the household works. From there we look at what somebody wants from their week, whether that is work or college, seeing family and friends, getting out locally, or simply having a home that feels properly theirs. Some people want plenty going on and others want a quieter life with support close at hand, and both are treated as sensible choices. We also offer respite stays, which give families a break and give the person staying a change of scene with support they can rely on. Walsingham Support provides residential care in Hertford for older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism. We also offer planned respite stays. The people who live here are adults with their own lives to lead, and our job is to make those lives possible rather than to manage them. Everybody has their own room, their own routine and a real say in how the house runs. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily eroded by being helpful. For adults with learning disabilities and autism, the particulars matter enormously. How a person communicates, what makes an environment tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, and which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves are all things we learn from the person rather than assume from a diagnosis. When change cannot be avoided, we prepare for it properly and at their pace. Life here is not meant to stop at the front door. We support people to keep up with family and friends and to get to the groups, activities, work or college that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit and spend time with the people who live here.

We are Layston Grove, a residential care home in Buntingford caring for older people, including many who are living with dementia. We have tried to keep the feel of a house rather than an institution. People bring their own furniture and pictures, come down when they wake rather than when a rota says so, and spend their days as they please. Some like the sitting room and the conversation that goes with it, others prefer their own room with the radio on, and neither choice needs explaining. Dementia care takes patience and it takes knowing the person. We spend time learning about the work somebody did, the family they raised, the music they grew up with and the routines that settle them. We do not argue about what year it is or where a person believes they are going. We meet people where they are and find something good to do together. The staff here know residents properly, which is how you notice that somebody is quieter than usual or eating less before it becomes serious. We keep families informed and would far rather ring early about a small worry. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them. We are Brent Cottage, a residential care home in Hoddesdon supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Being small is the whole basis of how we work. This is a house with a handful of people living in it, which means staff know everybody properly and the place runs around individuals rather than around a system. People have their own rooms set up the way they want, share the rest of the house, and have a real say in how things are done, from the weekly shop to how the day is organised. Support is built around what each person wants their life to look like. For some that means a busy week of college, work or activities out in the community. For others it means a settled routine at home with familiar company. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we work at it gradually rather than assuming a limit on their behalf. Communication underpins everything. We take time to learn how each person tells us what they need, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure new staff learn it from the people who know it best before working alone. We are Tanners, a residential care home at Abbots Langley supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. People have their own rooms arranged the way they want them, the rest of the house belongs to everybody, and decisions about how things run are made with the people living here rather than for them. - Care Home
We are Tanners Wood, a residential care home in Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. We provide permanent places and respite stays. A small home allows support to be genuinely individual rather than a compromise between competing needs, and that is the main reason we work the way we do. Staff know everyone here properly, including the things that never make it into a care plan, such as which noises are unbearable on a difficult day or which topic will always improve one. We treat autism as something that shapes how a person experiences the place they live, not as a line at the top of a file. Predictability matters. The sensory environment matters. Being told what is going to happen, and having that turn out to be true, matters more than reassurance ever does. When those things are wrong, nothing else we do compensates. People here make their own choices and do as much for themselves as they can, with help offered rather than assumed. Families and advocates are involved to the degree the person wants them to be. Respite guests visit first where possible, so that arriving is familiar rather than a shock. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

We are Chiswell Residential Home in St Albans, Hertfordshire. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with a mental health condition, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Residential care means supporting people with the parts of daily life that have become hard work and leaving the rest where it belongs, which is with them. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, moving about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. Where health needs go beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs, and we are straightforward with families about where that boundary falls. Living with a mental health condition does not stop being part of somebody's life when they move into residential care, and a good placement makes room for it. Some weeks are steadier than others. What helps is a settled environment, staff who do not take a difficult day personally, and a routine that people can lean on. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are, whether they are recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Hertfordshire
Two questions usually need answering before a shortlist means anything: what level of care is genuinely required, and who is going to pay for it. Both are settled through the same process, and families who begin it early find they have choices rather than whatever happens to be available.
Beginning with an assessment of need
Any adult who appears to need care and support may ask for a care needs assessment, and no savings test applies before one is carried out. Hertfordshire County Council is responsible for completing that assessment and for arranging funded support where a person meets the national eligibility criteria. The assessment covers washing, dressing, eating, medication, mobility and overnight safety, and produces a written record that is worth having even where the family expects to pay privately, because it makes clear whether a residential setting is the right answer at all. Anyone providing regular unpaid support can request a carer assessment in parallel.
What a place is likely to cost
Where the council is asked to contribute, a financial assessment follows and takes account of income, savings and other capital. A person whose capital sits above the national threshold is normally expected to meet the fee in full, while those below it pay on a sliding scale. Weekly fees differ from home to home across Hertfordshire and generally reflect room size, whether the room has its own bathroom, and how much individual attention a resident needs. Ask for the fee in writing before committing, together with a list of what is charged separately, the notice period on each side, and how often fees are reviewed.
Choosing between care homes in Hertfordshire
180 homes is a wide field, and the ratings attached to them are wider than in most counties, which changes how the list should be read.
Ratings that stretch across the whole scale
Every judgement here is published by the Care Quality Commission, and this list contains homes rated Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate, plus a number not yet rated. That spread makes the rating a genuinely useful filter rather than a formality. A Good rating means inspectors found the home met the standards tested, while Requires Improvement means shortfalls were identified that the provider was expected to put right. An Inadequate judgement is serious and normally brings the home under closer oversight, so anyone considering one should read the report in full and ask directly what has changed since the visit. Homes shown as not yet rated, among them Elm View Care Home and Meadowbrook Care Home, are usually newer registrations awaiting a first inspection.
Visiting with the right questions ready
Ratings will narrow the field but they will not tell you how a home feels on a wet Tuesday afternoon. Go at a mealtime, watch how staff speak to people who cannot easily reply, and ask how many carers are on duty overnight compared with the day. Ask how long the registered manager has been in post and how much the rota depends on agency staff, since continuity shapes daily life more than furnishings do. Homes such as Tanners Wood, Osbourne Court, Ganwick House and Ashlyns Care Home hold a Good rating on this listing, though two homes rated alike can still suit very different people. Keep travelling time in mind as well, because the relatives who visit most often are the ones for whom the journey is easy.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in Hertfordshire
How is a care needs assessment arranged in Hertfordshire?
Contact adult social care at Hertfordshire County Council and ask for a care needs assessment. Anyone who appears to need care and support has a right to one whatever their income or savings, and a relative may request it on the person's behalf with their agreement. The assessment considers daily tasks, mobility, medication and how safe someone is alone at night, and ends in a written record of the support needed. Where the person is in hospital, the ward can refer directly, which usually brings the assessment forward.
Will Hertfordshire County Council fund a residential placement?
It may, provided the person satisfies both the care eligibility criteria and the financial assessment that follows. Hertfordshire County Council looks at income, savings and other capital to decide how much the person contributes towards the cost of a place. Those with capital above the national threshold are generally expected to fund the placement themselves, although they can still ask for an assessment and for advice on choosing a home. Where the council contributes, it agrees a personal budget intended to meet the needs it has assessed.
Which homes appear on this Hertfordshire listing?
This page gathers one hundred and seventy five residential care homes registered with the Care Quality Commission to operate in Hertfordshire. They provide accommodation with personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals and medication, with staff present day and night. The list runs from large purpose built homes to small houses supporting a handful of residents, including providers such as Greenhill Care Home, Dunsland House and Hazel End Care Home. Every entry shows the current rating and links to the published inspection report.
What separates a residential care home from a nursing home?
A residential care home supports people with the ordinary tasks of daily life, with care staff on site at all hours but no nurses based on the premises. A nursing home provides that same support alongside clinical care from registered nurses, which suits people with complex medication needs, wounds or conditions requiring regular clinical oversight. Every home on this Hertfordshire page is registered for residential care rather than nursing. If nursing input looks likely before long, ask whether community nurses can visit or whether a further move would eventually be needed.
When should a family start looking at homes?
Before the need becomes urgent, ideally while the current arrangement is still holding together. Starting early leaves time to visit more than once, read inspection reports properly and join a waiting list where a home is oversubscribed. Searches that begin around a hospital discharge date tend to end with whichever home has a room free that week rather than the one that fits best. Even a provisional shortlist of three or four homes makes a sudden decision far less pressured.
What is worth asking during a visit to a Hertfordshire care home?
Ask about staffing levels by day and overnight, how long the manager has been in post, and how much the home relies on agency cover. Ask to see a week of menus and a recent activity plan, and find out what happens if a resident wants to get up late or eat at a different time. Request the weekly fee in writing with everything charged on top clearly listed, along with the notice period and the approach to annual increases. It is also sensible to ask how the home contacts families when something changes and how concerns are dealt with.
