Care Homes in Northumberland

Fifty seven care homes in Northumberland appear on this page, all of them registered to provide accommodation with personal care rather than nursing on the premises. Fifty are rated Good and three hold an Outstanding rating, while four have been told they require improvement, so the great majority of the list has been judged to meet the standards inspectors expect. Northumberland County Council carries out the care needs assessment that sets out the level of support a person requires, and after a separate financial assessment it decides whether public money contributes to the fee. Because homes here are spread across a wide area, the practical question of how often relatives can visit tends to matter as much as anything printed in a brochure. Take the profiles of the homes within a comfortable journey, read what inspectors recorded rather than the grade alone, and use that to decide which two or three deserve an afternoon of your time.

Planning and paying for care in Northumberland

The assessment that comes first

A care needs assessment is the practical starting point and costs nothing, whatever a person's savings. A social worker looks at washing, dressing, mobility, memory, medication and the help already given by relatives, then records in writing what level of support is needed. Where residential care is the answer, that document drives the support plan and any funding decision. Assessments can be requested through Northumberland County Council Adult Social Care, the authority responsible for assessing need and for arranging funded placements.

How much a family pays

The financial assessment is separate and compares income and capital with the national thresholds. Savings count, and the value of a property is generally counted once a move is permanent, though a deferred payment arrangement may help while a house is on the market. Where the council contributes, the resident still pays an assessed sum from pension and benefits. Above the threshold, families arrange and fund the placement themselves and can ask for an assessment later if capital reduces.

Reading a fee schedule

Weekly fees vary with the room, the support required and whether the home holds a contract with the council. Ask for the figure in writing, then ask what is charged separately, since hairdressing, chiropody and outings usually are. Ask how often fees are reviewed and what notice is given before a rise. Where a council funded place is likely, ask early whether a third party contribution would be expected and who would be responsible for it.

Choosing a home in Northumberland and what to check

What the four lower grades mean

Tynedale House, Jane Percy House and Birch Hill Care Centre hold Outstanding ratings, and fifty further homes are rated Good. Four have been told they require improvement, among them Riverside House, Turret Villa Retirement Home and The Old Vicarage. A grade of that kind describes a particular inspection rather than a permanent condition, so read the report before ruling a home out, especially if it is close to family. Inspectors set out plainly what concerned them, and the nature of the shortfall matters more than the label.

Distance, and what it costs over a year

A home an hour away may look ideal on paper and prove unvisitable in February. Be realistic about the journey a relative will make week after week, in poor weather and after work. Ask whether the home is comfortable with visitors arriving unannounced, whether there is somewhere private to sit together, and how it keeps families informed between visits when the drive is long.

What to establish before deciding

Ask how many carers are on duty overnight, how often agency staff are used and how long the manager has been in post. Ask how the home supports people living with dementia and what it does when someone becomes distressed. Read the contract in advance, particularly the terms on notice and fee increases. Each profile on this page carries the full inspection report, which makes the sifting far quicker than driving between homes.
