    • Care Home

We at Norfolk House Care Home are proud to offer compassionate residential care in the heart of Wigan, providing a warm and welcoming home for older people across the local community and beyond. Nestled within the WN postcode area of Wigan, our home enjoys a setting that combines the familiarity of a well established Northwestern town with the peace and comfort residents deserve. The surroundings offer a reassuring sense of place, making it easy for family and friends from across Wigan and the wider borough to visit regularly and stay closely connected with their loved ones. Our specialisms centre on older person care, residential care, dementia care and respite stays. For families, this means a genuine breadth of support under one roof. Whether a loved one requires long term residential living, specialist understanding for the challenges of dementia, or a short respite break to allow a carer time to rest, we approach every stay with patience, warmth and dignity. Our team takes time to learn each resident's life story, preferences and routines, because we believe truly personalised care begins with truly knowing the person. For those living with dementia, we focus on creating a calm, familiar environment where gentle reassurance, meaningful daily activity and a consistent, friendly approach help residents feel safe and understood. For respite guests, we aim to make every stay feel seamless and comfortable, offering the same quality of attention as our permanent residents enjoy, whilst giving family carers the peace of mind they need to take a well earned pause. We are proud to hold an overall CQC rating of Good, following our most recent inspection in September 2023. Reassuringly, we achieved a Good rating across all five key domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well led. For families, this consistency reflects a home where safety, kindness, strong leadership and responsive support all work hand in hand, giving loved ones confidence in the care being provided every single day. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the emotions involved. If you are exploring options for a parent, partner or relative in the Wigan area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Norfolk House Care Home. We would be delighted to answer your questions, listen to your loved one's needs and welcome you to see for yourself the caring community we have built here.

    • Care Home

Ambleside Bank is a residential care home in Wigan. We support older people and younger adults, including many who are living with dementia, and we offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Moving into a care home is a big change and we try not to make it a bigger one than it needs to be. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own routines as far as they can, and are not expected to fit around a timetable. Some people want company and something on all day. Others want quiet and their own room. Both are entirely reasonable and we plan for both. Dementia care depends on knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about a working life, a marriage, a hobby, the things that used to matter, because that is what allows us to make sense of someone when the words become difficult. We notice what settles a person and what unsettles them, and we change what we do rather than expecting them to change. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable time, and we would far rather hear about a concern early and directly than have it saved up. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering residential care in Wigan, please come and visit at an ordinary time of day and see how the home feels.

    • Care Home

Lakelands Residential Care Home is in Wigan, supporting older people, including those living with dementia, and some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, and we try to leave people in charge of everything else. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet room with the door closed. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to understand what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a problem to be managed. Families usually know a person far better than any assessment does, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Meals are cooked here, we ask people what they actually want to eat and nobody is hurried through a plate. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round properly.

    • Care Home

Montrose Hall is a residential care home in Wigan, providing a settled home for older people who need support with daily living. We care for residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose usual carer needs a rest. We aim for an ordinary life with good support behind it. Residents choose when they get up, how they spend their days and what they eat. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered, down to how somebody takes their tea. There is company and activity for those who enjoy it and no pressure on anyone who would rather have peace. Dementia support runs through everything we do rather than sitting to one side of it. We ask families to tell us about a person's life, their work, their music, their habits and their dislikes, because that knowledge is what allows staff to offer comfort that genuinely comforts. Familiar faces, calm surroundings and an unhurried pace achieve far more than any rigid approach. We work closely with local GPs and community nurses so that changes in health are picked up early, and we keep families properly informed. Relatives are welcome whenever it suits them. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please come and see the home and ask us whatever you like.

We at Ancliffe Residential Care Home offer a warm and welcoming residential care setting in the heart of Wigan, where compassionate support and a true sense of home come together for every person in our care. Nestled within the WN postcode area of Wigan, our home provides a comfortable and homely environment designed to help residents feel settled, safe, and valued from the moment they arrive. Our specialisms span older person care, residential care, dementia care, and support for younger adults, allowing us to welcome a diverse community of residents with differing needs and life stories. For families considering residential care for an older relative, this means trusted day to day support delivered with dignity and patience. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, which is why transparency and quality assurance matter so much. Ancliffe Residential Care Home has been rated Good by the Care Quality Commission across every domain assessed, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led, following its inspection in March 2021. This consistent rating reflects a home where residents are looked after with kindness, where the care delivered meets recognised standards, and where leadership supports a culture of continual attention to the people who live with us. We are a residential care home in Wigan, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth more than any written procedure. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would far rather hear about a problem early. • Care Home

Barley Brook is a care home in Wigan for older people, including those living with dementia, and for younger adults who need residential support. We are an ordinary house in an ordinary neighbourhood, and most of the people who live here have spent their lives in this part of the world. Our approach is not complicated. We find out how somebody has always done things, and we carry on doing them that way as far as we possibly can. That covers getting up and going to bed at the hours a person prefers, help with washing and dressing offered without any fuss, and food that people actually recognise and want to eat. Where dementia makes the day confusing, we keep it steady and familiar, and we put our effort into knowing the person rather than managing the condition. There is company here for those who want it and quiet for those who do not. Family and friends are in and out as they please, and we would rather people rang us with a small worry than waited until it had grown. We also offer respite stays, which can give a carer at home a proper rest or help somebody get back on their feet after time in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at homes in the area, come and see us on a normal day and make up your own mind.

    • Care Home

Norley Hall Care Home provides residential care in Wigan for older people, including a good number of people living with dementia. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. We try to run the home at the pace of the people in it. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, and spend the day as they want to. The help covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and all the small practical things that become difficult alone, given in a way that leaves somebody their privacy and their dignity. Dementia care here rests on steadiness rather than on any particular method. Familiar staff, a predictable shape to the day, and rooms that are easy to make sense of do more to settle a person than anything else available to us. We take the view that behaviour is nearly always communication, and the useful question is what someone is trying to tell us. Wigan is home for most people living here and we keep those threads going, with visits from local groups, trips out and family welcome whenever they want to come. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

The Old Rectory is a residential care home in Wigan. We provide a home for older people, including many living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays, whether that is to give a family carer a break or to help somebody find their feet again after a spell in hospital. We would rather be judged on ordinary things than on anything grand. Knowing how everybody likes their tea. Remembering which chair belongs to whom. Understanding who wants company from breakfast onwards and who would much rather be left with a newspaper. Helping somebody up when they wake rather than when it suits a rota. We ask about these preferences, write them down and expect them to be followed, because that is most of what makes a place feel like home instead of an institution. Dementia support is a large part of our work. Steady routines, familiar faces and patience do more good than anything else, along with a genuine effort to understand what somebody is telling us when words have become difficult. Families are welcome whenever it suits them and we keep in touch openly rather than only ringing when there is a problem. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. It reflects reliable everyday practice, which is what most families are actually looking for. If you are considering a care home in Wigan for someone close to you, please come and look round, meet our residents and staff and ask us anything you like.

    • Care Home

Alexandra Grange is a residential care home in Wigan. We provide a settled home for older adults who are finding it difficult or unsafe to manage alone, and our starting point with every new resident is to learn how they have always liked to live rather than to hand them a routine of ours. Day by day, that means support with personal care, medication, meals and mobility, given in a way that leaves people doing as much for themselves as they still can. We support residents living with dementia, and we put real weight on continuity, because a person who is confused about where they are is far better helped by someone they recognise than by a new face and a rushed explanation. We also care for residents living with mental health conditions, where a calm environment, a predictable structure to the week and staff who notice early changes tend to make the biggest difference. Respite stays are available as well. Families caring for a relative at home often need a genuine break, and a planned stay here can provide that without anybody feeling they have given up. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone thinking about a move is welcome to come and look round, meet the team and ask the awkward questions that really matter.

Here at Thorley House, we provide residential care for older adults, people living with dementia, and younger adults in the heart of Wigan. We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine effort our whole team puts into making this a place where people feel safe, respected and at home. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person and their family will ever make. That is why we take the time to get to know each person who comes to live with us, learning about their life, their preferences and what matters most to them. Care here is built around the individual, not the other way around. Our team supports people with a range of needs, including residential care for those who need a little extra help with day to day living, as well as specialist support for people living with dementia. We also welcome younger adults who need the right environment and the right level of care to live as well as possible. Whatever someone's situation, we work hard to make sure they feel genuinely valued and listened to. Life at Thorley House is about more than just care. We want people to enjoy their days, maintain their independence wherever possible, and continue doing the things that bring them pleasure. We encourage families to be involved and to visit freely, because we know how much those connections mean. We are part of the Wigan community and that matters to us. If you would like to find out more about whether Thorley House might be the right fit for your loved one, please do get in touch. We are always happy to have a chat or arrange a visit.

Ash Tree House is a residential care home in Wigan. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, and for younger adults who need a supportive household. Respite stays are available as well. The first fortnight after a move matters enormously, and we give it real thought. Before somebody arrives we want to know what time they wake, how they take their tea, what they cannot abide and who they want to be able to ring. Those details are what begin turning a strange room into their room. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we do only as much as somebody needs. Where a resident can still manage something themselves, they keep it, and we are in no hurry to take things over. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and we treat it as caring for a person rather than managing a condition. We keep the day's rhythm steady and the surroundings familiar, give people time instead of finishing their sentences for them, and ask families about earlier life, because that knowledge is what makes sense of a mood or a repeated question. We would far rather hear about a small problem early than a large one later, so families who tell us when something is not right are doing us a favour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask us anything you like.

    • Care Home

Ash Tree House is a residential care home in Wigan, supporting older people and younger adults, including many people living with dementia. Our ambition here is unfashionably plain: we want the ordinary days to be good ones. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people look forward to. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Somebody awake at night. Enough going on in the house that there is a reason to come downstairs, and no pressure at all on anybody who would rather not. People keep their own habits wherever we can arrange it. A home that insists everybody rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has stopped being a home and become a timetable with beds in it. Dementia care is most of what we do and we have clear views about it. Correcting somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all. Familiar staff, a calm and unhurried house, and knowing enough of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation help enormously. Relatives are our best source of that history, and we ask for it early rather than as a form filling exercise. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather keep improving than defend a grade. Come and see us at a busy time and ask the residents what they think.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Wigan, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. We try to run the place so that it belongs to the people who live in it. Residents have their own rooms with their own belongings, get up and go to bed when they choose and decide how they want to spend their days. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody says they would rather have something else. Much of what makes a care home worth living in is small and unglamorous: being helped to wash without being rushed, a hot drink at the time you actually want it, somebody noticing when you have gone quiet and sitting down with you. Dementia care, as we have come to understand it, is mostly a matter of knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is frightened or cannot place where they are. Family and friends are welcome whenever they would like to come, and we would always rather a relative raised a concern straight away. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Do come and look round and ask us anything.

It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would far rather hear about a problem early. Please come and see the home for yourself.

The Oaks Care Home is a care home in Wigan. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, people with a physical disability, people with a visual or hearing impairment and people affected by alcohol or drug misuse. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if nobody is treated as a category. So we sit down with each person, work out what their week should actually contain, and arrange staffing around that rather than the reverse. Some of the people who come to us have had a difficult time before they arrive, and we do not treat that history as a verdict on somebody. What matters is how the person wants to live now and what support would make that possible. Residents decide how their own day runs, keep their own things around them and see visitors when it suits them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering care in Wigan, and talk to the people living here as well as to us.

    • Care Home

Primrose Villa is a residential care home in Wigan. We care for older people who need help with daily living, including many people living with dementia, and we also support younger adults where we are confident we can meet their needs. Respite stays are part of what we do. The house runs on the idea that people have moved home rather than moved into a system. People get up when they wake, eat when they are hungry, keep their own furniture and photographs around them, and spend the day where they choose, in company or quietly on their own. Help with washing, dressing and getting about is given when it is wanted and as discreetly as we can manage. Dementia care here is mostly about steadiness. Familiar faces, a predictable rhythm to the day, and staff who know somebody's history well enough to understand what lies behind a difficult afternoon. We gather that history with families when a person arrives and keep adding to it, so the knowledge belongs to the home rather than leaving at the end of a shift. Meals are cooked on the premises and matter a great deal to how people feel. There is something going on most days for anyone who wants it and no pressure on those who do not. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are welcome at any reasonable time.

Garswood House Residential Care Home provides residential and nursing care in Wigan, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. Having both residential and nursing care under one roof matters more than it sounds. It means that when someone's health changes, they are not automatically uprooted and moved somewhere new at the point they can least cope with it. People can stay among staff and neighbours they know, which is worth a great deal. Clinical care here is done properly and quietly. Skin integrity, medication, pain, nutrition, continence: the things that keep people well are checked and rechecked rather than assumed. We staff at a level that makes that kind of attention realistic instead of aspirational. Everything else is about ordinary life. People choose when to get up, where to sit, what to eat and who to see. Visiting is not confined to convenient hours. Getting outside is part of the week, not an occasional outing, and we take real notice of what individuals actually enjoy rather than running a fixed programme. For people living with dementia we work with familiarity and go at the person's pace. Where somebody is unsettled we look first for a cause we can put right. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Come and visit us in Wigan whenever it suits, and ask us the questions that worry you most.

Ashwood Residential Care Home is in Wigan. We are a permanent home to older people, many of whom are living with dementia, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. We help with the things that have become difficult: getting washed and dressed, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, eating and drinking well, and having somebody nearby through the night. Where dementia is part of the picture it shapes the whole house rather than one wing of it. We keep the day recognisable, keep familiar staff around people, let residents hold on to their own belongings and habits, and sit with somebody who is upset instead of trying to talk them out of it. Food is cooked here and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and families visit whenever they can and are welcome at mealtimes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Choosing a care home is a hard thing to do, so please come and visit, more than once if that helps, and talk to whoever is on shift. That will tell you more than anything we can write here.

Douglas Bank Nursing Home is in Wigan and we provide both residential and nursing care under one roof. That matters to the people who live here, because it means that if someone's health needs change they do not have to move somewhere unfamiliar. Nurses are on duty day and night. We care for older people, residents with a physical disability, people living with sight or hearing loss and younger adults whose needs are best met in a home like ours. Many of our residents are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day calm and familiar, keep the same staff working with the same people and take time to understand what somebody means when speech has become difficult. We also support people living with eating disorders, working alongside the health professionals involved and without judgement at mealtimes or afterwards. Where there is a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving comfortably and safely. For residents with sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate and do not move things without saying so. Residents still choose when they get up, what they eat, where they sit and who visits. Respite stays are available, both after a hospital admission and where a family carer needs a break. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round.

    • Care Home

Lindsay House is a care home in Wigan providing residential care for older people, including residents living with dementia, people living with mental ill health and adults with physical disabilities. We support younger adults too, and we offer respite stays. With that range of people under one roof, a single routine would suit nobody, so we build the day around individuals instead. Some residents want company and plenty going on; others want to be left in peace with the door ajar. Both are perfectly reasonable ways to live and neither requires justification. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does the work that cleverness cannot. A recognisable order to the day, faces that stay the same, a room with somebody's own things in it, and staff who know enough about a person's earlier life to understand what they are really asking for. Where mental ill health is part of the picture, the same steadiness applies, along with plans made with the person during settled periods. Practical detail counts as well: being able to get around the building, equipment used correctly by everyone, and somewhere quiet to go when the lounge is loud. Respite stays are available for carers needing a break and for short periods of extra support. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please visit and talk to the people who live here.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Wigan

Dementia changes the definition of a good home. Warmth and kindness still matter, but so do the layout of the building, the steadiness of the staff group and what happens on a difficult evening. The right questions are more specific than they are for general residential care.

When every home holds the same grade

All 21 homes on this page hold a Good rating, meaning inspectors judged each of them safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led at the last inspection. That is a solid starting position, but it also means the grade cannot narrow the list for you. Turn instead to the reports themselves and to their dates: what inspectors said about staffing levels, about how people were spoken to, about medication and about the way the home responds when someone is distressed. Those passages differ enormously between homes that share a grade.

The building and the shape of the day

Ask how someone finds their way about: whether doors and handrails contrast with the walls, whether there is daylight and a safe place to walk when restlessness sets in, and whether a bedroom can be made to look like a person's own. Ask what happens in the late afternoon, when agitation is common, and what is tried before medication is ever discussed. Ask whether waking, eating and bathing follow lifelong habits or the staff rota.

Training and familiar faces

Ask what dementia specific training carers have completed, who delivers it and how often it is refreshed. Ask how many staff cover the night and what they do when somebody is frightened at three in the morning. Ask how long the current team has worked there, because recognising a face matters more to a person with dementia than almost anything else a home can offer.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Wigan

The assessment of needs

Any adult who appears to need care and support can ask for a free assessment, whatever their savings. It should record what the person can still do, where support is needed and how memory and understanding affect daily life, and it should involve the person themselves as far as possible. Where someone may lack the capacity to make the decision, it must be taken in their best interests with family consulted. Arrange it through Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council adult social care, and ask for a carer's assessment of your own if you have been holding things together at home.

Who pays for a placement

A financial assessment then sets capital and income against national thresholds. Above the upper threshold the placement is self funded; below it the council contributes on a sliding calculation while the resident pays a share from income. Where health needs are substantial, continuing healthcare funding from the National Health Service may apply instead, and it is reasonable to ask for that to be considered. Request every calculation in writing.

Fees and what they include

Weekly fees differ between homes and between rooms, and places with higher staffing for dementia support often sit at the upper end of the local range. Ask for a written breakdown of what is covered and what is charged separately. Ask what happens to the fee if needs increase substantially, and how much notice precedes a rise.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Wigan

How many dementia care homes are there in Wigan?

Wigan has 21 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 29 CQC registered care homes in Wigan: 21 Good. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Wigan were inspected most recently?

Woodlands Court Care Home (11 August 2025), Douglas Bank Nursing Home (11 July 2024) and Ambleside Bank Care Home (25 January 2024) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which homes in Wigan provide dementia care?

21 residential care homes in Wigan registered to support people living with dementia appear in this collection. Each has a profile on Care Assura showing its published rating and linking to the inspection report behind it. All are registered with the Care Quality Commission, the regulator for adult social care in England. Since every home here holds the same grade, comparing the reports and the distance family would travel is the practical way to narrow the list.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Wigan?

Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed and how many carers work overnight. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed or determined to leave, and what is tried before any medication is considered. Ask whether familiar furniture and belongings can come along and whether personal routines are kept. Ask as well how families are kept informed and what happened the last time a concern was raised.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides accommodation and personal care with staff trained to support memory loss and the changes in behaviour that can come with it. A dementia nursing home offers the same alongside registered nurses on duty at all hours, so clinical needs are met without moving elsewhere. The difference lies in each provider's registration and decides who a home may admit. Where swallowing difficulties, advanced frailty or complex medication are involved, a nursing registered home is usually the safer choice.

Can Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where the needs assessment shows that residential dementia care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national upper threshold. Any contribution is worked out on a sliding scale, with the resident normally paying something from income. Where health needs are substantial, National Health Service continuing healthcare funding may apply instead and should be considered. Ask for the calculations in writing so they can be checked.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Wigan?

Contact Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council and ask for an adult social care needs assessment. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative or friend, or from a GP, memory service or hospital team. It is free and savings do not affect the right to be assessed. The written outcome sets out the support required and becomes the basis for choosing a home and for any funding decision.

How far ahead should we start looking at dementia care homes?

As early as the diagnosis allows, because good dementia homes fill up and a crisis leaves very little choice. Looking early also means the person can visit and give a view while they are still able to weigh one place against another. A calm sequence is to request the assessment, shortlist a few homes and visit each more than once. Should a hospital stay force the timing, a short term placement can hold the position while the family looks properly.
