    • Care Home

Max Potential UK runs a residential care home in Bolton supporting a wide range of adults. We provide care for older people and for people living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with mental ill health, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting such a mixed group means there is no single way of running the home, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we aim for is a place where people are taken as they come and where support is built around the individual. Some residents need a very structured day. Others need the opposite, plenty of freedom and somewhere stable to come back to. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, and staff who adapt how they communicate. For residents with a learning disability or who are autistic, the environment itself is part of the support, and we learn how each person communicates, including those who use little or no speech. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit us in Bolton.

    • Care Home

Take A Break With Choices provides short stays in Bolton for adults who need support, and a proper rest for the families who usually provide it. A short break should be something the person looks forward to rather than something endured, so we plan each stay around what somebody actually enjoys. We support older people and younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people living with a physical disability, and people who have sight or hearing loss. Because stays are short, getting the detail right from the first hour matters enormously. We ask families how somebody communicates, what settles them, what unsettles them, what they eat and how they like their day to run, and then we follow it. For autistic guests in particular, we keep surprises to a minimum, explain what will happen and when, and keep a quiet space available for anyone who needs to step away. Families often say the hardest part is handing over, so we would much rather people visited beforehand and met the team. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are considering a short break for somebody, please get in touch.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Bolton supporting adults with a wide range of needs. The people who live here include older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities, people with loss of sight or hearing and people living with eating disorders. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing anxiety, getting out of the house and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. So we start from what somebody wants their life to look like. People keep their own rooms and belongings, have a real say in how the house runs and choose how much they join in. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits. Where consistency and routine matter, as they often do for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available as well as longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and ask us whatever you need to.

BH Residential Care Home is a care home in Bolton. We support older people who need help with daily living, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period. We aim to run the place as a house rather than an institution. Residents get up when they are ready, eat what they actually like, keep their own furniture and photographs around them, and decide how much of the day they want to spend in company. Support is agreed with each resident and their family, written down, and changed as needs change. We should be open about our most recent inspection. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to write around that. We have an improvement plan in place and we are working through the points that were raised, and anyone considering the home for a relative is welcome to ask exactly what was found and what we have done since. We would rather have that conversation now than leave someone to discover it later. What we are working towards is straightforward: staff who know the residents well, familiar routines for people living with dementia, families told things early, and complaints that lead to change rather than to reassurance. Our staff are expected to raise concerns, and we would sooner hear a difficult observation than a polite one. If you would like to visit us in Bolton, please get in touch.

Grange Lea Residential Home has been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission, with Good ratings across all five key areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. Here at Heaton House Care Home in Bolton, we provide residential and dementia care for older people, as well as support for those living with a physical disability. We also offer respite care for those who need a short term stay, whether that is to recover after a hospital admission or to give a family carer some time to rest. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our team works hard to get to know each person who comes through our doors, understanding their routines, their preferences, and the things that matter most to them day to day. Good care, in our view, is built on those small but important details. For residents living with dementia, we aim to create an environment that feels calm, familiar and reassuring. We work closely with families to understand each person's history and personality, so that our team can offer support that feels genuinely personal rather than one size fits all. We want to be straightforward about where we are as a service. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating, and we are taking that seriously. We have been working through the feedback carefully and making changes across the home. We are committed to being open with families about our progress, and we welcome any questions people have when they come to visit us. If you are considering Heaton House for yourself or someone you love, we would encourage you to come and see us in person. Have a look around, meet the team, and ask us anything you would like to know. We would rather you made your decision with a full picture of who we are.

Hyde Lea is a residential care home in Bolton, providing a permanent home for older people who can no longer manage safely on their own. We try to run the place as a household, with the ordinary rhythms of meals, company, fresh air and rest. Our care is residential rather than nursing, which means help with washing and dressing, medication, eating well and moving about safely, alongside the things that are harder to measure but matter just as much: conversation, being listened to and somebody noticing when a person is not quite themselves. We support residents living with dementia, and our approach is to learn each person's history and habits properly so that reassurance can be given in terms that make sense to them. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather say that here ourselves than leave a family to find it later. The areas identified are where our effort is going at present, and we are not asking anyone to take our word for it. Please visit, speak to residents and their relatives, and judge us on what you actually find.

    • Care Home

Southlands Residential Home is in Bolton. We are a permanent home to older people, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody has, and people living with sight or hearing loss. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

    • Care Home

Bakewells is a residential care home in Bolton, providing a permanent home for older people who need help with the everyday practicalities of life. We are a household first, and everything about how we run the place follows from that. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, bringing in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many residents live with dementia, and we put our effort into the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that does not shift about, food that is recognisable, and reassurance offered as many times as it is wanted. We keep a close eye on the small signals, whether someone is eating, sleeping or seeming unlike themselves, because those are usually the first indications that something needs attention. Respite care is available too, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before making any permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that, though it describes how we were found rather than entitling us to anything, and it has to be earned again every day. Please come and see the home for yourself and ask us whatever you like.

Laburnum Lodge is in Bolton and we are registered for both residential and nursing care. That matters more than it sounds, because it means somebody whose health declines does not automatically have to move again. The nursing comes to the person rather than the person being sent to find the nursing. A great many of the people living with us are living with dementia, and respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours. The clinical work is detailed and unhurried, covering medicines, wounds, pain, pressure care and making sure people eat and drink enough. What no procedure can cover is noticing early when somebody is not themselves, and that rests entirely on the same staff knowing the same residents over months, which is why keeping our team is where most of our effort goes. For residents with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings calm, we learn individual histories properly, and we accept that some days are harder than others without treating that as a failure. Families are welcome often and at awkward hours. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see the place on a normal afternoon.

In addition, our respite care option provides invaluable short term support, giving family carers a well earned rest whilst knowing their loved one is in safe, capable hands. In practice, this means our team takes the time to get to know each resident, learning about their history, preferences, routines, and the small things that bring them joy. Families can expect open communication, genuine warmth, and a shared commitment to ensuring their relative feels valued every single day. Whether someone joins us for a short respite stay or makes Glenbank their long term home, our aim is always the same: to promote dignity, independence, and wellbeing. We are pleased that the Care Quality Commission has rated Glenbank Care Home as Good overall, with Good ratings across all five key areas of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. Wilfred Geere House is a residential care home in Bolton. We are home to older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, and we welcome people for respite stays, whether to recover after a spell in hospital or to give a family carer a break. Moving into a care home usually follows a hard few months, so we take the settling in gently. We ask about the routines of a lifetime, the food somebody actually likes, how they take their tea and whether they would rather be up early or have a lie in, and we build around that instead of expecting people to fit in with us. Rooms belong to the people in them, furnished with their own things, and we knock before entering. The days are not heavily organised. Company, conversation, music and a trip out for those who want it, the newspaper and peace for those who do not. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work, so we keep our team settled and learn each person's history rather than just their care needs. We work with local GPs and community nurses so health changes are dealt with early, and families are kept properly informed, including when the news is difficult. The Care Quality Commission rated us good overall at our most recent inspection. You are welcome to visit at any reasonable time.

Starmount Villa Residential Care Home is in Bury, on the north side of Bolton. We look after older people who need help through the day, including a good number living with dementia and people with a physical disability. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We are not large or elaborate and we do not pretend to be. What we offer is help with the ordinary day, given properly and without rush. Getting washed and dressed in a way that leaves somebody feeling like themselves. Medicines on time. Meals that are hot, recognisable and worth eating. Help to move about the building safely. Company for people who had been sitting alone most of the week before they came. For residents with dementia the work is mostly about consistency. The same staff, the same rhythms, a bedroom that looks like the person's own room, and a willingness to go at their pace rather than ours. Where a physical disability is involved the work is about equipment, patience and giving somebody the time to do a thing themselves rather than doing it for them. We want relatives in the building often, and we would rather be told when we have got something wrong. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Ring us or simply call in.

Beechville is a residential care home in Bolton, offering older people a settled and friendly place to live with support close to hand. We aim to get the ordinary things right, which in our experience is what actually makes a home work: good food, warm rooms, unhurried mornings and staff who have the time to sit and talk. Many residents here are living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. In both cases the approach is the same in spirit: learn who the person is, keep the day predictable, explain changes in advance, and give people the time they need rather than the time a schedule allows. Distress is treated as something to understand, not something to manage. Residents decide how their days run and how much company they want. Rooms are personalised, family and friends are welcome without appointment, and nobody is pushed into activities they have not chosen. We also offer respite stays for people needing care for a short period, which some families use as a first step towards a longer arrangement. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are looking at care homes in Bolton, please come and see us on an ordinary day and ask whatever you like.

Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits, because knowing the person is what settles them when they are frightened. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round and ask us whatever you need to.

    • Care Home

Blackrod House is a residential care home in Bolton. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We keep things straightforward. People usually come to us because managing at home had become hard work, and what they want back is some ease. Meals they do not have to plan or cook. Help when washing and dressing has become a struggle. Somebody who notices when they are not themselves. Company when they want it and quiet when they do not. Residents carry on running their own lives as far as they are able, choosing their routines, arranging their rooms and deciding how much of the day to spend downstairs. We ask people to bring their own furniture and pictures, because a room that looks like yours makes settling in far easier. Dementia care here is built on consistency rather than anything elaborate. Familiar staff, a steady rhythm to the day, and knowing something about a person's earlier life. Families usually supply the details that explain everything, and we ask for them early. When somebody is unsettled, we look for the reason rather than simply calming the moment. Family and friends are welcome at sensible hours and are part of the household rather than visitors to be managed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round Blackrod House.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Bolton

Dementia changes what a good home looks like. A building that suits a physically frail but mentally sharp resident may be actively disorientating for someone who no longer recognises their own corridor, and staff who are kind but untrained can leave distress unaddressed for hours. Registration to support people with dementia tells you a home is permitted to take such placements; it does not tell you how well it does so. That distinction is what a visit and an inspection report are for.

Staff Training and How Distress Is Handled

Ask what dementia training staff receive, who delivers it and how often it is refreshed. Then ask the more revealing question: what happens when a resident becomes distressed, agitated or wants to leave. Listen for answers about knowing the person, redirecting gently and finding the cause, rather than answers that begin and end with medication. Ask how many residents are prescribed medicines for agitation and whether those prescriptions are reviewed, because a home comfortable discussing that is usually one handling it thoughtfully.

The Building Itself

Look at whether corridors are easy to follow, whether bedroom doors are distinguishable from one another, and whether there is somewhere safe to walk when someone needs to keep moving. Notice the lighting and the noise level, since both affect confusion markedly. Ask whether residents can bring familiar furniture and photographs, and whether there is a secure garden reachable without asking permission.

Knowing the Person Behind the Diagnosis

Ask how the home learns about a new resident's working life, family and habits, and how that information reaches the carer on shift at three in the morning. Ask to see how it is recorded. Homes that do this properly can tell you why a particular resident likes to be up early; homes that do not will describe their policy instead.

Reading the Inspection Record

With one home rated Outstanding, twelve rated Good and three rated Requires Improvement, the local picture is complete and largely reassuring. Where a home is rated Requires Improvement, read the report rather than dismissing it, noting whether the concerns touched on care and safety or on records and oversight, and how recent the visit was.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Bolton

The Care Needs Assessment

Anyone who appears to need care can request a free care needs assessment, and this stage disregards savings entirely because it is not means tested. It is arranged through Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council adult social care, the authority responsible for assessing what a person needs and for arranging funded support where they qualify. For dementia the assessment matters particularly, because it should capture supervision needs and night time risk, not simply help with washing and dressing.

Meeting the Cost

A financial assessment then reviews income and capital to decide whether the council contributes to fees, covers them fully, or whether the family pays. Weekly fees include the room, meals and personal care, with hairdressing, chiropody and outings billed separately. Some homes charge more for a place on a dementia unit, so ask directly whether that applies and what the current weekly rate is in writing.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Bolton

How many dementia care homes are there in Bolton?

Bolton has 17 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 43 CQC registered care homes in Bolton: 1 Outstanding, 13 Good, 3 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Bolton were inspected most recently?

Southlands Residential Home Limited (23 February 2026), Heaton House Care Home (13 February 2026) and Woodlands Care Home (28 January 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers in Bolton offer dementia care?

17 residential care homes in Bolton are registered to support people living with dementia, and all of them appear on this page with a published inspection rating. They range from smaller homes with a single dementia unit to larger houses organised entirely around dementia support. Availability changes week by week, so it is worth contacting more than one even where you have a preference. Each listing opens into a profile setting out the inspection detail behind the rating.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A residential dementia care home provides personal care and supervision from trained care staff, suiting people whose needs are largely about safety, routine and support with daily living. A dementia nursing home is additionally registered to keep qualified nurses on site, which matters where someone has clinical needs such as wound care, injections or swallowing difficulties alongside their dementia. Every provider listed on this page is registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. If an assessment identifies nursing needs, it will point you towards nursing registered provision instead.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Bolton?

Ask what dementia training the staff receive, who provides it and how often it is refreshed. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed or wants to leave, listening for answers about knowing the person rather than about medication. Find out how the home learns a new resident's history and habits and how that reaches night staff. Ask whether there is a secure garden and whether residents can bring their own furniture and photographs.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Bolton?

Contact the adult social care team at Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council and ask for a care needs assessment, for yourself or on behalf of a relative. The assessment is free and is not means tested, so savings and income do not affect your right to one. Where dementia is involved, make sure supervision needs and night time risk are discussed, as these are easily understated. Anyone providing regular unpaid care should ask for a carer assessment at the same time.

Can Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where the person has been assessed as needing residential dementia care and the financial assessment shows they qualify for help with the cost. Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council handles both stages, agreeing the level of need and then reviewing income and capital to set any contribution. Some people are funded in full, others pay a share of the weekly fee, and many meet the cost themselves. Requesting an assessment is worthwhile even for self funders, because it records the agreed level of need as the condition progresses.

How far ahead should I start looking for a dementia care home in Bolton?

Start earlier than feels necessary, because dementia placements are harder to match than general residential ones and the right home may not have a vacancy when you need it. Two to three months allows time to visit more than once, read inspection reports and complete the assessments calmly. Visiting twice matters here, since a single tour rarely shows how a home handles a difficult afternoon. If a hospital discharge is setting the timetable, say so when you ring.
