    • Care Home

We are Heywood Court Care Home in Heywood. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support younger adults whose needs suit a residential setting. Respite stays are welcome. Moving into a care home is a considerable upheaval, and we try to make it feel less like an ending. People arrive with their own belongings and their own habits, and we work around those rather than expecting everyone to adopt ours. What time you like to wake, whether you want breakfast in the dining room or your own chair, how sociable you feel on a given day: these are your decisions and they stay your decisions. For people living with dementia, the practical work is in the detail. Learning somebody's history, noticing early what unsettles them, going at their pace instead of the timetable's. That prevents far more distress than it costs. We also think a home should stay part of its town. Heywood is on the doorstep, and we support people to keep up the connections they already have, whether family, a club or a church. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour and we tell them about changes rather than waiting to be asked. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

    • Care Home

Highfield House Care Home is a residential home in Heywood, Rochdale. We support older people and some younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody actually has. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to come and see us and talk to whoever is on duty.

    • Care Home

Highfield Manor is a residential care home in Heywood. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we support younger adults too. We also offer respite stays for families who need a planned break. We try to run this as a household rather than a facility, and the test of that lies in ordinary things. Whether staff knock and wait. Whether you can get a cup of tea late in the evening. Whether the person helping you knows what you did for a living. Whether anybody notices when you have been quieter than usual for a few days. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep the surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the working life, the places and the names, because those are what still connect when a great deal else has gone. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what somebody can still manage themselves rather than what is fastest for us. Respite guests are looked after properly rather than simply accommodated. We ask beforehand how the person likes things done, since a fortnight gives us no time to learn it slowly. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives are welcome unannounced, which is the only visit that shows you anything.

    • Care Home

Beech House is a residential care home in Heywood, Rochdale. We look after older people who need support with daily living, and we also support younger adults whose needs mean that living alone is no longer manageable. Much of our work involves dementia. We keep the house calm and familiar, we give people time instead of hurrying them, and we make sure staff know each resident's history, habits and preferences. That knowledge is what turns a set of tasks into care that actually suits the person. We want this to feel like a home. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, decide how to spend the day and see visitors when they choose. There is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not, and meals are planned around what people genuinely enjoy rather than what is easiest to cook. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to support someone while they regain strength after illness. Relatives are part of daily life here. We keep them informed, welcome them at any reasonable hour, and ask them what they know about the person. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. Please come and look round at a time that suits you and ask us anything you like.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Heywood

The care needs assessment

Before fees enter the conversation there should be a written account of what the person needs, and that is what a care needs assessment produces. It is free, has no means test and can be requested by the person or by a relative acting for them. Assessment and funded support in this area are the responsibility of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, whose assessor will consider memory, risk, mobility, medication, continence and the load currently carried by family carers. Describe the worst nights rather than the manageable days, because an assessment written from a good week consistently understates what is needed. A relative providing unpaid care can request a separate assessment of their own.

What the fees tend to involve

Dementia placements are priced by the week and vary between homes in Heywood, so rely only on a figure a home has given you in writing. Ask what the weekly rate covers and what is billed on top, since hairdressing, chiropody, outings and certain continence products commonly sit outside it. Where the council contributes following a financial assessment, the rate it pays may be lower than a home's private fee, and the shortfall must be met by a third party top up rather than by the resident. Someone with substantial health needs may also qualify for continuing healthcare funding through the National Health Service, which is assessed by a separate process and worth raising early.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Heywood

When the ratings are all the same

With four homes all rated Good, the rating stops working as a filter and the text of each report becomes the deciding evidence. Read what inspectors recorded under each of the five key questions, note how recently they visited and look for the passages describing real interactions rather than policies. A report that quotes residents and relatives tells you considerably more than one summarising procedures. Where a report is a few years old, treat it as a starting point and ask the manager what has changed since, especially about staffing and turnover.

Questions that reveal the quality of dementia care

Ask how many staff on each shift have completed dementia specific training and who delivers it, because a module completed once online is not the same as regular supervision. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes agitated towards the end of the afternoon, and weigh whether the answer is about finding the cause or about containing the behaviour. Find out how life history is gathered and where staff actually read it. Ask how long the manager has been in post and how much agency cover is used in a month, since familiar faces matter enormously when memory is failing. Ask finally what happens if nursing needs develop, and whether that would mean moving again.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Heywood

How many dementia care homes are there in Heywood?

Heywood has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 6 CQC registered care homes in Heywood: 4 Good. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Heywood were inspected most recently?

Beech House (17 March 2023), Heywood Court Care Home (7 July 2022) and Highfield House Care Home (4 December 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Heywood?

Contact the adult social care team at Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which anyone can request for themselves or on behalf of a relative. It is free and does not depend on income, savings or any previous contact. An assessor will discuss memory, safety, mobility, medication and the help a family already provides, then record the eligible needs in writing. Ask for a carer's assessment in the same conversation if a relative is giving regular unpaid support.

Can Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It may, where the person meets the national eligibility criteria and a financial assessment shows they qualify for support. Care needs are considered first, then capital and income separately, to establish how much of the cost the council will meet. Someone with significant health needs may additionally qualify for continuing healthcare funding through the National Health Service, assessed by a different process. Where a person pays for their own care, the council can still provide advice and information.

Which homes in Heywood provide dementia care?

Four residential care homes match this search, namely Beech House, Highfield Manor Care Home, Highfield House Care Home and Heywood Court Care Home. All four currently hold a rating of Good. Availability changes from week to week, so a home listed here may have no vacancy when you make contact. Open each profile for the registration details and the most recent Care Quality Commission report before you ring.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A care home provides personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, eating, medication and daily routine, delivered by care staff. A nursing home additionally keeps qualified nurses on duty and can manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, feeding tubes, unstable conditions and much end of life care. All of the providers matching this search in Heywood are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If a hospital or community nursing team has indicated that nursing care is needed, look at nursing provision or ask whether district nurses can visit the home.

How early should we begin looking for a dementia care home?

Sooner than most families feel ready to, particularly where only a handful of homes serve the town and waiting lists build quickly. Starting early also allows the person moving to express a preference while they still can. If a crisis has already arrived, say so plainly when you telephone and ask how soon an assessment could happen. Keeping more than one acceptable home in view leaves you somewhere to turn when a room becomes free.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Heywood?

Ask how many staff on each shift hold dementia specific training and who provides that training. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed late in the day, and judge whether the answer is about understanding the cause or about control. Find out how life history is recorded and how it reaches the staff working each shift. Ask as well about staff turnover and agency use, because recognition depends on seeing familiar faces.
