    • Care Home

We are Bluebell Villa, a residential care home in Chester. We support older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. Residential care means helping with what has become hard work and leaving everything else in the hands of the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover them, and we are clear with families about where that line falls. Dementia takes up much of our day, and what helps most is knowing the person. Their history, their working life, the routines they have kept for decades. Someone distressed almost always has a reason for it, and the reason is more often practical than people expect. For residents with a physical disability the practical details matter most: enough time that nothing is rushed, equipment set up properly, and asking the person how they prefer things done. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and do not currently hold an overall rating.

    • Care Home

Florence Grogan House Residential Care Home is in Chester, supporting older people and younger adults, including many people living with dementia. We try to run a house rather than an institution, and the difference lies mostly in small decisions. People get up when they are ready. Meals are unhurried and worth turning up for. Somebody who wants their own company can have it without being coaxed into the lounge. Help with washing and dressing is given in a way that protects dignity, which usually comes down to asking first, explaining what we are doing, and never taking over a task a person can still manage themselves. Dementia care is a significant part of our work, and the most useful knowledge almost always comes from families. What someone did for a living, who they are thinking of when the late afternoon becomes unsettled, what music helps. We ask for that, record it and pass it between shifts. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please do come and look round.

    • Care Home

Moorfield House Care Home is in Salford. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. We are a residential home rather than a nursing home, so our strength is in the daily business of living well. Help with washing and dressing, getting about safely, medication, meals that people look forward to, and the company that so often disappears when someone has been struggling alone at home. Where nursing input is needed we work alongside the district nursing team and local GPs. For residents with a physical disability we focus on what can still be done rather than listing what cannot, and we make sure equipment, layout and the amount of help offered are right. Being helped too much is its own kind of loss. With dementia, we keep the day steady and the surroundings familiar, and we ask families to tell us about the person's working life, their interests and their habits. Knowing somebody was always up at five, or never drank tea, saves a lot of confusion later. Respite stays suit people recovering after illness and family carers who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round Moorfield House.

Bowfell House is a care home in Trafford. We provide residential care for older people, and we support people living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it and slightly wary of it, because a standard like that is far easier to reach than it is to hold, and the quickest way to lose it is to start believing your own description. What gets us there is not complicated. A settled staff team who know the residents properly. A day that belongs to the people living in it rather than to a timetable. Families who feel able to tell us when something is wrong, and a manager who is on the floor rather than behind a door. Residents choose when to get up, what they eat and how much company they want, and their rooms are genuinely their own. For those living with dementia, we work from the person's own history. What they did, who their family are and what their afternoons used to look like usually explains more than any assessment. Please come and visit if you are considering care locally. Come unannounced if you would rather.

    • Care Home

The Chanters Care Home is a residential home in the Wigan area. We support older people, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, as well as some younger adults, and we offer respite stays. The home runs around the people in it. Residents decide when to get up, what they want to eat and how to spend the day, and we would rather somebody read the paper all morning than joined in with something to be polite. Rooms are personalised from the start with people's own furniture and pictures, because familiar surroundings make settling in much easier. Supporting people who live with dementia alongside long standing mental ill health is a real part of our work, and it is an area where people sometimes get moved from place to place. We would rather be somewhere that holds steady. Routines stay consistent, staffing is kept as settled as the rota allows, and when a person is distressed we look for the cause instead of simply calming the moment. Having younger adults living here too means we are careful that their days do not drift into a pattern designed around much older residents. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness or hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit The Chanters and ask us whatever you need to.

    • Care Home

Hall Lane Resource Centre in Manchester provides short breaks and respite care, which means most of the people we support come to us for a planned period rather than to live permanently. That shapes everything about how we work, because somebody arriving for a short stay has to feel welcome and settled quickly rather than treated as a temporary case. We support older people, including those living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people living with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. We take time before a stay to learn how somebody communicates, what their routine looks like at home and what helps them settle, so that we can keep as much of it as possible while they are here. Families who need a break should be able to take one without spending it worrying. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We would rather say that plainly. We have worked through the findings and our attention has gone to the things that shape a person's stay here rather than to records alone. Please come and visit and ask us directly what has changed.

    • Care Home

Orchid Woodlands Healthcare is a residential care home in the Bolton area of Greater Manchester. We support older adults and younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with mental health needs, and people with a physical disability or a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available too. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if we know each of them properly. A home where everyone is offered the same routine will suit some residents and quietly fail others, so we start from the individual: what their life has been, what they want their day to contain, what settles them and what does not. For residents living with dementia we rely on familiarity, a steady rhythm and time given rather than grudged, and we look for the cause of distress instead of simply managing the moment. For residents with mental health needs, consistency matters most, along with staff who understand that a difficult stretch is part of the pattern rather than a crisis to be reported. Alongside the care there has to be a life worth having: decent food, visitors made welcome, fresh air, something to do, and a genuine say in how the day goes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Anyone considering a place here is welcome to visit and form their own impression.

    • Care Home

Amadeus is a residential care home in Salford, Manchester, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. A house shared by adults with such different needs only works if difference is expected rather than merely put up with. Our residents do not want the same day as each other, and our job is to make room for that without letting the loudest need crowd out the quietest person. Practically, we help with the things that have become difficult. Washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility, and the steady attention that keeps somebody safe and comfortable. We aim to do all of it in a way that leaves a person's dignity where it belongs, which mostly means asking first, explaining, and not doing for somebody what they can still do themselves. Communication is adapted to suit each individual. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and anyone considering a place is welcome to visit and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Pemberton Fold is a residential care home in Salford, Manchester, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather put that first than have somebody find it elsewhere. It is not the rating we want and we are not going to talk around it. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it with our staff, the people who live here and their families, and anyone considering a move is entitled to ask precisely what is changing, who is accountable for it and what evidence there is that it is taking effect. The life of the home continues meanwhile and it matters to the people in it. That means help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility given in a way that protects a person's dignity, and for residents living with dementia it means staff who know somebody's history well enough to understand what a particular anxiety is really about. Respite stays are available. We would encourage families weighing us up to visit, ask hard questions and judge our progress for themselves.

    • Care Home

Abbey Grove is a residential home in Salford. We support older people and younger adults, and our experience covers dementia, mental health needs, physical disabilities, and sight and hearing loss. Respite stays are part of what we do. With that range of people the only sensible approach is to build round individuals. Before anybody moves in we spend time with them and whoever they want involved, learning how they like their days to go, what they manage perfectly well themselves, where help would be welcome and what they would rather we left alone. That becomes the plan and it is theirs to change. Help with washing, dressing, mobility, medication and health appointments is given as the person has asked and recorded carefully, so it happens the same way whoever is on shift. Rooms and equipment get genuine thought, because independence often turns on whether a thing is within reach. Where there is sensory loss we attend to lighting, contrast, clear signs and hearing aids that have actually been checked. With dementia we lean on knowing somebody well, gathering their history with their family and keeping it current, so that staff respond to the person and not to the behaviour in front of them. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we aim to be steady and clear. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are welcome.

Ecclesholme is a residential care home in Salford. We look after older people who need daily care, including many people living with dementia, and we also support younger adults who need residential care. The house runs at a human pace. People get up when they wake, eat what they recognise and enjoy, and spend the day in whatever way suits them. For someone living with dementia, that steadiness is a large part of the care, along with familiar faces, meals at the times people expect them, and enough time in the day that nobody is hurried through anything. We would rather shape our routine around a person than ask a person to fall in with ours. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are part of what we offer as well, giving a family carer a proper rest or supporting somebody through a period of recovery after a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We keep our own standards under review in between, because a rating describes one moment and the people living here need consistency from us. If you are looking for a home for yourself or someone close to you, please come and see us on an ordinary day and ask us whatever you want to know.

We are a residential care home in Manchester supporting adults with a wide range of needs. The people who live here include older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, people with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing anxiety, getting out of the house and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits, because knowing the person is what settles them when they are frightened. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. We are Hollybank Care Home in Bury, Manchester. We provide both nursing and residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people with a physical disability, and we take respite stays. Offering both kinds of care under one roof has an advantage that matters more than it may sound. Somebody who comes to us needing residential support and whose health later becomes more complicated does not have to move somewhere new at exactly the point when a move is hardest. They stay where they are, with the staff and surroundings they already know, and the level of care changes around them. For residents living with dementia we build the day around the person rather than expecting them to fit our timetable, and when somebody is distressed we look for what is causing it before anything else. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. We know what the inspection found, there is an improvement plan in place, and we would far rather go through it openly with a family weighing up a placement than have them come across it some other way.

    • Care Home

The Dell is a residential care home in Manchester caring for older people, including many living with dementia. Families usually reach us tired. The decision to move a relative into a care home is rarely taken lightly and often follows a long stretch of managing at home with too little help. One of the most useful things we can do early is take some of that weight off, be honest about what we can and cannot offer, and make it possible for a daughter or a husband to go back to being family rather than a carer who never gets an evening off. For the person moving in, the first weeks are what count. We want to know how they have always run their day, what they are proud of, who they want to hear from, what unsettles them and what makes an afternoon good. We write it down, we use it, and we keep correcting it as we learn. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Elmhurst in Bury provides short stays rather than permanent residential care. People come to us for a planned break, to give a family carer a genuine rest, or for extra support and recovery time after a spell in hospital before going home again. Because our stays are short, we work hard to learn quickly what matters to somebody: how they like their day to run, what they eat, what worries them and what they want to be able to do by the time they leave. We help with personal care, medication, meals and moving about safely, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. We support people living with dementia, where familiar faces and a calm, predictable routine matter enormously, particularly when somebody is in an unfamiliar place. We also support people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, adapting how we communicate and how we assist, and we support younger adults as well as older people. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If a short stay might help you or somebody you care for, please get in touch and ask us how it would work.

    • Care Home

Appleton Lodge is a residential care home in the Stockport area of Manchester, providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need help with everyday life. We support people living with dementia and people living with physical disabilities. We try to keep the place feeling like a house rather than a unit. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, and spend the day as they want to spend it. The help we give covers washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult to manage alone, offered in a way that leaves somebody their privacy. For those living with dementia we hold to steady routines and familiar staff. That consistency does more good than any technique, and our team tends to stay with us, which means people here are looked after by faces they recognise. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than have it sit unspoken until it has grown. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places, which families often use to cover a holiday or a period of recovery at home. • Care Home

The Paul Murphy Centre is a residential care home in Manchester providing a home for a varied group of people: older adults, younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Having that range under one roof works because we build support around the individual rather than around a label. One person may need help with every part of the day and another may need very little, and both live here on the same footing. We ask each person what a good day looks like for them, we write it down in a way that makes sense to them, and we change it when they tell us to. Communication is central to the way we work. We use speech, signing, symbols, objects and plain familiarity, whatever suits the person, because that is what turns being told about a decision into actually making one. People here are supported to go out to work, college, clubs, appointments and family, and to be as involved in running the house as they want to be. Short respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we would be glad to show you round.

    • Care Home

We are Little Heaton, a residential care home in Rochdale. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. What we provide is residential care rather than nursing care, and we say so plainly to families at the outset so that nobody moves somewhere unable to meet their needs. Within it, we help with washing, dressing and moving about safely, support people with medication, provide proper meals and make sure nobody spends the day alone unless that is their preference. The home runs at the pace of its residents. Nobody is woken to suit a rota, mealtimes bend around the person, and how the day is spent is a matter for the individual. Some like the lounge and the conversation that fills it, others would rather keep to their own room. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We learn about the work somebody did, the family they raised and the routines that settle them, and we work with all of that rather than correcting anybody about the present. Our staff know residents well enough to notice when somebody is quieter or eating less than usual, and we ring families early rather than waiting. Visitors are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Please get in touch to look round.

Silverdene Residential Home is a care home in Manchester. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, and we support people living with dementia, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Supporting that range of people under one roof works only if nobody is treated as a category. What a younger autistic adult wants from a week bears almost no relation to what an older person living with dementia needs from it. So we sit down with each person, work out what their week should actually contain, and arrange staffing around that rather than the reverse. Residents decide how their own day runs, keep their own things around them and see visitors when it suits them. Where sight or hearing has failed, we say who has come into the room and describe what is happening rather than assuming it is obvious. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering care in the city, and talk to the people living here as well as to us.

For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and to move about in. • Care Home

Chatsworth Lodge is a care home in Chesterfield. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. Respite deserves more than a passing mention, because it is often what keeps a family going. Carers at home tend to carry on far longer than they should before asking for help, and by the time they do they are frequently exhausted rather than merely tired. A planned stay here gives them room to recover properly, and it gives the person staying a proper welcome rather than a fortnight of being managed. We treat short stays exactly as we treat permanent ones. For permanent residents, the day is theirs. People get up when they want, eat what they want, spend their time where they choose and see visitors when it suits. Rooms belong to the people in them, with their own furniture and pictures. Supporting somebody with dementia is mostly about steadiness. The same faces, a recognisable rhythm to the day, and staff who understand what lies behind a repeated question rather than simply answering it again. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at care in Chesterfield, whether for a short stay or a longer one, please come and see us.

Claydon Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and we are home to older people who need support with daily life. We think of the building as the place where people live rather than a place where care is delivered, and we try to make the difference between those two ideas obvious the moment anyone walks in. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we support residents with physical disabilities and with visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays, which can give a family carer a proper rest or allow someone to try life here before making a longer decision. Dementia care runs through much of what we do. We take time to learn about a person's history, their preferences and the rhythms of their day, because that knowledge is what allows us to offer reassurance when someone is anxious or disorientated. For residents with sensory loss, we adapt how we communicate and how we arrange rooms and shared spaces so that nobody is left out of conversation or activity. Families are welcome here and we would rather hear a concern early than find out later that something was wrong.

Brimington Care Centre is a residential care home near Chesterfield. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. We aim for an ordinary, comfortable household. Residents get up when they wake, eat what they actually enjoy and spend their days as they choose. Some are sociable and are downstairs from breakfast onwards. Others would rather have their own room, their own television and a quiet word with somebody who is not in a hurry. Both are perfectly reasonable and neither needs explaining. People usually arrive having struggled at home for a while, and the first few weeks are about settling rather than fitting in. We learn routines rather than imposing them, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures so a room becomes theirs quickly. Dementia care here rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Where somebody is distressed, we look for the cause. Having younger adults living here as well means we are careful not to let anyone's day drift into a pattern built around much older residents. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Brimington.

Ravensworth Care Home is a residential care home in Chesterfield. We support older people who need daily care, adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and younger adults, and we try to make the house feel like somewhere people belong rather than somewhere they have been placed. Dementia care is a large part of what we do. The things that help most are unglamorous and consistent, familiar faces, meals when people expect them, routines that hold together, and staff who have the time to let a conversation go at its own pace. We build our days around that rather than around a schedule that suits the building. Because the people living here have quite different needs and ages, we do not run one timetable for everybody. Some people want company and activity through the day, others want their own space and a quiet life, and both are perfectly reasonable. We also offer respite stays for families who need a break or for someone recovering after a period in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We took the findings seriously and we keep an eye on our own standards between inspections rather than waiting to be told. If you are looking into a home for yourself or a relative, please come and visit. Seeing the place and meeting the people in it is worth far more than anything we can write here.

    • Care Home

Otterbourne Grange Residential Care Home provides residential care near Winchester for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia. We also take planned respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution, and most of what we do is ordinary. Helping people wash and dress, seeing that medicines are taken properly, cooking meals people actually want to eat, keeping an eye on health, and making sure nobody spends the day waiting for somebody to speak to them. Residents get up when they choose, spend their time as they wish, keep their own things around them and have visitors whenever it suits. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces, a recognisable shape to the day, and time to do things at the pace somebody can manage. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating the diagnosis as the whole story, and we know a calm unhurried approach prevents far more distress than it costs in time. Respite stays are genuinely useful. A planned stay gives a family carer proper rest, and it lets somebody find out what we are like without committing to anything longer. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us.

Glencairn Residential Home is in Dorchester. Mobility matters here. Do come and look round Glencairn, meet residents, and ask us whatever you need to.

Montrose Care Home is a residential home in Dorchester, Dorset. We are a permanent home to older people, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people living with mental ill health, working alongside community mental health colleagues, and people with physical disabilities. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the garden gets used when the weather allows, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Deciding on a care home is not something to do from a brochure, so please come and visit and talk to whoever is on duty.

Cheriton is a residential care home in Dorchester, Dorset. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. Respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality and we work at avoiding it. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone. A number of our residents have lived in this part of Dorset all their lives and know it far better than we do. A conversation about the town with somebody who has watched it change over eighty years is worth having rather than filling with small talk. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Our own test is whether somebody who has lived here a year still feels at home.

We are a residential care home in Dorchester supporting adults with a wide range of needs. The people who live here include older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing money, getting out, handling the things that cause anxiety and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. So we start from what somebody wants their life to look like. People keep their own rooms and belongings, have a real say in how the house runs and choose how much they join in. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits. Where consistency matters, as it often does for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available as well as longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and ask us whatever you need to.

The Conifers is a residential care home in Colchester, Essex. The people living here include younger adults, people living with dementia, people with a learning disability or autism, people with sight or hearing loss and people managing mental health conditions. We also offer respite stays for shorter periods of care. Our residents need quite different things from us, so support is planned with each person rather than run to a single pattern. People have their own rooms, their own belongings and their own routines, and they have a real say in how the day goes. We are careful about the difference between helping somebody and doing things for them, because independence is easily worn away by help that arrives in too much of a hurry. Communication is something we work at. Not everybody here uses many words, and understanding a person properly takes time, attention and a willingness to be corrected. For those living with dementia, steadiness does the most good. Familiar staff, routines that change only for a reason and patience when words are difficult. Families are closely involved and we keep in touch honestly rather than only when there is a problem. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep examining the things that slip quietly in any home, particularly privacy and choice. If you are considering a place or a respite stay with us, you are welcome to come and visit, meet the people who live here and ask us whatever you need to know.

Plume Avenue in Colchester is a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with learning disabilities and autism and people managing mental health conditions. A house shared by adults of different ages and very different needs only works if difference is expected rather than merely tolerated. Our residents do not want the same day as one another. Some want company from breakfast onwards, others prefer their own company until the afternoon. Some need a great deal of practical help, others mainly a settled base and staff who know them properly. Running the place well means holding all of that at once without letting the loudest need crowd out the quietest person. We plan support with each individual and with whoever they want involved, and we adapt how we communicate to suit them, whether that means more time, fewer words, written information or simply less noise around them. Respite stays are available for short periods of support or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

    • Care Home

The Haven is a residential care home in Colchester for older people who need help with daily living, including many people living with dementia. We also offer respite stays. We are a house rather than an institution and we work to keep it feeling that way. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own hours, choose where to spend the day and get help with washing and dressing at their own pace and as privately as we can manage. Meals are cooked here with real choice at each one, and food matters a great deal to how people feel. Dementia care here is largely about steadiness. Familiar faces, a predictable rhythm, and staff who know somebody's history well enough to understand what is behind a difficult afternoon. We gather that history with families when a person arrives and keep adding to it, so the knowledge belongs to the home rather than leaving with a shift. We keep an eye on health without turning the place into a clinic. If somebody seems unwell we act early, involve the surgery and the district nurses, and tell families what is happening rather than waiting to be asked. Respite stays can give a relative who cares at home a genuine break, and they let somebody get to know us gradually. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall, and visitors are welcome at any reasonable time.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Chichester, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come. Please come and see the home for yourself before deciding anything.

Whyke Lodge is a residential care home in Chichester, West Sussex, providing care for older people, including people living with dementia. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution and we work quite hard to keep that true. People here get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. There is company and activity for those who want it and no obligation at all for those who would rather have a quiet corner, a book and the window open. The care covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always around when a person needs them. For those living with dementia, we keep the routine steady and the staff familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and move around. Chichester is where most of the people living here have spent their lives, and we keep those connections going with trips out, local visitors, and families welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to come and see the home.

Nyton House is a residential care home in Chichester. We care for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia, those with a physical disability and those whose sight or hearing is impaired. We also support some younger adults. Our care is the practical, daily kind: help to wash and dress, medication given properly, meals cooked here, support to move about safely and staff available through the night. Around that, residents arrange their own time as they wish, and we try not to organise people's lives on their behalf. For residents living with dementia we keep the rhythm of the day predictable and the staff around them consistent. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings exactly where they are expected, approach people so as not to startle them and check that we have been understood. Where people need help to move, we take the time that doing it safely and comfortably requires. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. Families across West Sussex are welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Alexander House is a residential care home in Chichester in West Sussex. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available. The people living here have genuinely little in common in terms of what they need, so we plan support one person at a time and mean it. What settles somebody with dementia is not what gives an adult with a learning disability confidence, and neither resembles what helps somebody living with a long standing mental health condition. Running one routine across all of that would suit nobody. So we spend our attention on particulars: how somebody likes to be addressed, what they can do themselves and would rather we left alone, what makes a difficult day and what heads it off early. Where sight or hearing loss is in the picture, habits matter more than equipment: saying who you are as you come into a room, leaving furniture where it belongs, checking that glasses and hearing aids are working. Understanding how each person communicates is central, especially where speech is not the main route, and what we learn is written down so everybody responds the same way. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.

    • Care Home

Stronvar Rest Home is a residential care home in Colchester. We look after older people who have found that managing alone has become more of a struggle than a pleasure, including many people living with dementia. We try to keep life here ordinary. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, and spend the day as they choose, in company or quietly with a newspaper. Good dementia care is mostly unremarkable in the doing of it, familiar faces, meals at expected times, routines that hold from one day to the next, and staff with enough time to let a conversation take as long as it takes. We would rather shape our day around a person than ask a person to fall in with ours. We also offer respite stays, whether to give a family carer a proper break or to support somebody through a period of recovery after illness or hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. It matters to us, though the better test is whether somebody seems settled and content after a few weeks here, and that is the question we keep putting to ourselves. If you are looking for a home for yourself or someone close to you, please come and see us. Call in on a normal day, meet the people who live here and ask us anything you want to know.

    • Care Home

Rochester Care Home is a residential care home in Rochester for older people who need help with daily living. We support people living with dementia, people with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays. With that range of needs we build round individuals rather than running one routine. Before anybody moves in we spend time with them and whoever they want involved, learning how they like their days to go, what they manage perfectly well themselves and where help would be welcome. Help with washing, dressing, mobility, medication and health appointments is given as the person has asked and recorded carefully, so it happens the same way whoever is on shift. Rooms and equipment get real thought, since independence often turns on whether a thing is within reach. Where there is sensory loss we attend to lighting, contrast, clear signs and hearing aids that have actually been checked. With dementia we lean on knowing somebody well, gathering their history with their family and keeping it current. Where somebody is managing a mental health condition we aim to be steady and clear. Meals are cooked here with real choice. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Chester

How these homes are registered

All one hundred and thirty five providers matching this search in Chester are residential care homes. That registration shapes everything else. It means the people on duty are care staff trained to support daily living, washing, dressing, meals, medication prompting and the familiar routines that help keep someone with dementia oriented, rather than registered nurses delivering clinical care on the premises. Health needs are met by visiting district nurses and the person's own GP. Where the clinical picture is already complicated, with wound care, assisted feeding or an unstable long term condition in play, a home carrying a nursing registration is the better comparison to make.

Reading the regulator's record properly

Quality across these homes is genuinely uneven. Care Quality Commission ratings of Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate are all present in this set, and some homes have no rating yet, which reflects where they sit in the inspection cycle rather than anything about the care itself. A single headline word is a starting point and not a verdict. The five domain judgements underneath it, covering whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, carry the detail that actually helps, and for dementia the caring and responsive domains tend to say most. A home marked down over record keeping is a very different proposition from one where inspectors raised concerns about overnight staffing.

What to notice when you visit

Ask to come in the late afternoon, when tiredness and confusion often peak and a home is seen at its most honest. Watch whether staff crouch to eye level and use residents' names, whether there is anything occupying people beyond a television left on, and whether someone can walk a circuit safely without being steered back to a chair. A settled staff team matters more than new decor, because familiar faces reduce distress in a way that furnishings never will. Ask plainly how the home responds when a resident becomes distressed or tries to leave, and listen for a considered answer rather than a reassuring one.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Chester

Beginning with a care needs assessment

The practical starting point is a care needs assessment, and Cheshire West and Chester Council is the authority responsible for providing one to anyone in Chester who appears to need care and support. The assessment is free and is not means tested, and it produces a written account of what the person needs that remains useful even to a family intending to pay privately. A relative providing regular support can request a separate carer's assessment of their own needs at the same time.

Who pays, and the cost context to expect

A financial assessment follows, in which capital and income are measured against the national means test thresholds. Above the upper capital limit a placement is paid for privately; below it the council contributes a calculated share, and someone funding their own care may still ask the council to arrange the placement on their behalf. Dementia care usually costs more than standard residential care, because the staffing ratios and specialist training required are higher, so ask every home for a written schedule of fees setting out exactly what is included and what is billed separately. Confirm in writing what would happen if savings run down or needs increase, and ask whether the home accepts council funded placements at all, since that answer prevents a great deal of wasted effort later.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Chester

How many dementia care homes are there in Chester?

Chester has 140 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 320 CQC registered care homes in Chester: 6 Outstanding, 103 Good, 20 Requires improvement, 2 Inadequate, 9 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Chester were inspected most recently?

Chimnies Residential Care Home (22 September 2026), Milton Lodge Retirement Home (19 August 2026) and Dovecote View Chichester (10 August 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers in Chester offer dementia care?

140 residential care homes in Chester match this search for dementia care, and each one appears in the listing above with its own profile. Every provider in the set is registered as a residential care home, meaning personal care and daily support rather than nursing delivered on site. Their Care Quality Commission ratings vary considerably, from Outstanding through to Inadequate, with some homes not yet rated. Opening each profile lets you compare the registration details and the inspection history side by side before you contact anyone.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Chester?

Ask how many staff are on duty overnight as well as during the day, and how long the current team has been in post. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed, tries to leave, or refuses personal care, and ask for a specific example rather than a policy statement. Find out how care plans are written with families and how often they are revisited as someone's needs change. It is also worth asking what a typical afternoon looks like, since meaningful occupation makes a measurable difference to wellbeing in dementia.

How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?

A residential dementia care home provides personal care, supervision and support with everyday living, delivered by trained care staff. Nursing needs in that setting are met by visiting community health professionals such as district nurses and the person's GP. A dementia nursing home, by contrast, has registered nurses on duty around the clock and is registered to deliver clinical care itself, which suits people with complex or unstable health conditions. All the providers matching this search in Chester are residential care homes, so anyone needing continuous nursing input should compare nursing registered homes instead.

Can Cheshire West and Chester Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows that capital and income fall below the national upper threshold. The council then contributes a calculated share of the fees, with the resident paying an assessed contribution from income and capital. Above the upper capital limit the placement is self funded, although the council can still be asked to arrange it. Where nursing care forms part of the package, NHS funded nursing care may cover the nursing element separately, so it is sensible to ask about both routes.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Chester?

Contact the adult social care team at Cheshire West and Chester Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to request. A referral can also come through a GP, a hospital discharge team or a community nurse, and a family member can make the request on someone's behalf. The assessment itself is free and carries no means test, and it results in a written record of eligible needs. Ask at the same time for a carer's assessment if a relative is providing regular support.

How far ahead should we start looking for dementia care in Chester?

Several months ahead is sensible wherever the move is foreseeable rather than urgent, because the best regarded homes often have waiting lists and a rushed decision narrows the options sharply. Starting early also leaves room to visit more than once, at different times of day, which is where the most useful impressions come from. Where a hospital discharge or a carer's own illness forces the pace, say so clearly when requesting the assessment, as that affects how quickly it is arranged. Even in an urgent situation it is worth reading the full inspection report on any home before agreeing to a placement.
