- Care Home
Acorn Manor Residential Home is a care home in Ellesmere Port. We are home to older people who need support with daily life, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. We are small enough for everybody here to be known properly, and that is the basis of everything else we do. Our team notices when somebody eats less than usual, sleeps badly, seems low or becomes unsteady on their feet, and it gets acted on the same day rather than at a review in a month. Residents decide how their own days go. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others in the lounge or keep to their own room. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps most, so we keep staffing settled, learn each person's history properly and use it to make sense of what they are telling us. When somebody is distressed we look for the reason rather than trying to close it down. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round.

- Care Home
Mayfields is a residential care home in Ellesmere Port providing care for older people, including those living with dementia. We are a home rather than an institution, and the difference shows in how the day runs. People choose when to get up and go to bed, where to spend their time and how much company they want, and they keep their own belongings around them. Staff help with washing and dressing, with moving about safely, with medication and with meals and drinks, and they do it without hurrying anybody, because being rushed is one of the things older people mind most. For those living with dementia we keep routines steady and surroundings familiar, adjust how we communicate rather than expecting the person to adjust to us, and treat distress as something to be understood. Meals are cooked here with a real choice. We know the people living here well enough to notice when somebody is not themselves, and we involve the GP early rather than waiting. Respite and short stays can be arranged for families needing a break or people recovering after illness. If you would like to look round, please telephone us and we will arrange a time that suits you.

- Care Home
Astbury Lodge Residential Care Home is in Ellesmere Port. We are a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication given properly and on time, and meals worth looking forward to, with somebody nearby through the night. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We have found that the residents who settle best are the ones who keep hold of their own habits, so we ask about those habits early and work around them instead of asking people to fit our routine. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Choosing a care home is a difficult thing to do, so please come and visit, more than once if that helps, and talk to whoever is on shift.

- Care Home
Willowmere Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Ellesmere Port, supporting older people and younger adults across Cheshire West and Chester, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. People rarely arrive here at a happy moment. It usually follows a fall, a hospital stay, a bereavement, or a long stretch in which managing at home quietly stopped being possible. We treat the first few weeks as the part that matters most and we go at the person's pace, not the paperwork's. Somebody may well be grieving for their own house while settling into a room here, and pretending otherwise does not help them. After that, the work is ordinary and important. Food cooked here that people want to eat. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. Enough going on to give the day a shape, with nobody obliged to take part. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know each person's preferred way of being helped to move are what keep a life from shrinking to the size of a chair. With dementia we work on familiarity and calm rather than correction, and we ask families early for the history that helps us reach someone. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. Come and look round, unannounced if you would rather.

- Care Home
Whetstone Hey Residential Home is a care home in Ellesmere Port. Most of the people who live here are older adults who reached a point where staying at home had become unsafe or lonely, and a large part of our work is with people living with dementia. We support younger adults as well, and we take respite bookings for planned breaks, recovery after illness, or a trial stay for someone still deciding. We try to run this as a home rather than a facility. Help with washing, dressing and medication is given quietly and at each person's own pace. Meals are cooked here and nobody is hurried through them. People choose where to spend the day, in company or on their own, and the routines they have kept for decades are respected rather than reorganised for our convenience. Dementia care depends on knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about the work someone did, the places they lived, the music they still respond to and the things that have always unsettled them, because that knowledge is worth more on a difficult afternoon than any policy. Staff are asked to slow down and follow the person rather than steer them. Relatives are welcome whenever suits them, and we would much rather hear a worry the day it arises. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary weekday, meet whoever is on duty and ask us anything at all.

- Care Home
We are Thornton House Residential Home in Ellesmere Port. We look after older people, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. We keep things deliberately homely. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you like to wake, where you want your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly with the paper: those decisions stay with you. A good deal of what makes a day here pleasant is quite ordinary, and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up. For people living with dementia the useful work is in the detail. Knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, being willing to go at their pace rather than the rota's. Done properly that prevents a great deal of distress before it starts. Where somebody has a physical disability, we give proper attention to access, equipment and getting about, so those needs are met without fuss. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would always rather hear about a concern while it is small. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Ellesmere Port
The registration is a threshold, not a recommendation, and a visit is where the difference shows. Look for staff trained to respond to confusion and distress rather than contain it, a layout that helps people orient themselves, and a safe route for anyone who walks frequently. Ask how many staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed.
Where the grades sit
Whetstone Hey Residential Home, Astbury Lodge Residential Care Home, Acorn Manor Residential Home and Mayfields are each rated Good. Thornton House Residential Home has been rated Inadequate, which is the regulator's lowest grade. Homes can and do improve, sometimes markedly, but findings at that level need weighing on their own terms rather than brushed past.
What to notice on a visit
Watch whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed in the evening. Ask about staff turnover, because familiar faces matter more to someone with memory loss than any feature of the building. Ask whether the garden is secure and genuinely used, and what would happen if needs progressed beyond the home's registration.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Ellesmere Port
The assessment comes before any contract and decides whether residential dementia care is the right level of support at all. It is free, anyone may request it, and a relative can do so with the person's consent. Cheshire West and Chester Council is responsible for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows, and a carer living with the person is entitled to one of their own.
How the financial assessment works
Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are measured against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can delay the sale of a house.
Costs and the allowances often missed
Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care because the support is personal rather than clinical. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested and are frequently overlooked by people funding themselves. Where a council contribution falls short of a home's private rate, establish in writing whether a third party payment is expected and who would be liable for it.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Ellesmere Port
How many dementia care homes are there in Ellesmere Port?
Ellesmere Port has 6 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 10 CQC registered care homes in Ellesmere Port: 4 Good, 1 Requires improvement, 1 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Ellesmere Port were inspected most recently?
Thornton House Residential Home (22 July 2026), Acorn Manor Residential Home (28 July 2023) and Whetstone Hey Residential Home (23 August 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.
Which homes in Ellesmere Port provide dementia care?
Five residential care homes covering Ellesmere Port are registered to support people living with dementia: Whetstone Hey Residential Home, Astbury Lodge Residential Care Home, Acorn Manor Residential Home, Mayfields and Thornton House Residential Home. The first four are each rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Thornton House Residential Home has been rated Inadequate. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its grade, which is worth reading in full here.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides residential personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing in the later stages. All 6 homes listed here are residential rather than nursing.
What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Ellesmere Port?
Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and how high turnover is, since familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Where a home holds a low grade, ask what has changed since the inspection and ask to see the action plan. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported.
How is a care needs assessment arranged in Ellesmere Port?
Ask Cheshire West and Chester Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. A carer can also ask for a separate carer's assessment in their own right.
Can Cheshire West and Chester Council fund a dementia placement?
Cheshire West and Chester Council can fund or part fund a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having on record. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital is held in a property. Where the council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would cover the difference.
How far ahead should a family start looking?
Start early even where a move still feels distant, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Allow extra time here, since the reports on this list need reading closely before a visit is worthwhile. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows that kind of preparation. It is also worth asking the council early about options a little further afield.
