- Care Home
Wirral Christian Centre Trust provides residential care in Birkenhead. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with a learning disability or who are autistic, people managing mental health conditions, people with a physical disability, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period. Supporting such a range of people well depends on treating each one as an individual rather than as a category. We ask how someone likes their day to run, what they can do for themselves, what they find difficult, and how they prefer to communicate, and we build support from those answers. People's faith and beliefs matter to us and are respected here, whatever they are, and nobody is expected to take part in anything they would rather not. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to gloss over that. The points raised have been taken seriously and we are working through them, with attention on the practical things that make a daily difference to the people who live here. Anyone thinking about the home for themselves or a relative is welcome to visit, spend time here, speak with residents and staff, and ask us plainly what has changed and what has not. We would rather have that conversation openly than have it avoided.

- Care Home
We are Summer Fields, a residential care home in Birkenhead on the Wirral. We provide a home for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite stays. Residential care means supporting people with the parts of daily life that have become hard work while leaving everything else where it belongs, which is with the person. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, moving about safely, and the everyday company that makes a day worth getting up for. For health needs beyond our registration we work alongside district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover them ourselves. Dementia takes up a good deal of our attention. We have learned that arguing with somebody's account of things achieves nothing, and that knowing who a person has been tells us far more than any list of symptoms. Someone who worked for decades to a particular rhythm often still carries it, and a routine built around that works better than one imposed on top. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are, whether they are recovering after illness or giving a family carer a rest. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

- Care Home
Birkenhead Court is a residential care home in Birkenhead, on the Wirral, caring for older people including many living with dementia. We also take respite bookings for people who need a stay of a few weeks, whether to recover after hospital or to give a family carer a real break. We run an unhurried home. People get up when they choose, keep their own belongings around them, eat food worth sitting down to and spend the day as suits them. There is company and something going on for those who want it, and a quiet corner for those who would rather have their own. With dementia, steadiness does most of the work. Familiar faces, a predictable shape to the day, calm surroundings and time given rather than rushed. We learn about people's earlier lives from them and from their families, because knowing who somebody has been changes how you talk with them now, and where a person becomes distressed we look for the cause rather than reaching for a label. Our staff know the people living here, which is how changes in health get noticed early and taken to the GP or district nurse before they turn serious. Families are welcome whenever suits them and are part of how decisions are made. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Do ring if you would like to look round.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Birkenhead
Both assessments have to be done
A funded placement needs both assessments completed, and neither can be rushed by a family. The assessment of need is free, open to anyone who may require care, and records how someone manages washing, dressing, medication, eating, orientation and risk at home. Ask Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council Adult Social Care to carry it out and to arrange the financial assessment that follows, which decides whether the council can contribute. Where there is a diagnosis, ask for it and the current medication list to be included, since homes rely on that detail when judging whether they can meet the need.
What a placement costs
Fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals, laundry and personal care, with hairdressing, chiropody and outings charged separately. A place in a unit designed around dementia sometimes carries a higher fee, so ask what the difference buys in staffing levels and training. Where capital falls below the national threshold, the council may contribute once its financial assessment is complete, and above it the place is funded privately. Ask what happens if nursing care becomes necessary later, because not every home can support someone through that change.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Birkenhead
Reading the three records
Birkenhead Court and Summer Fields both hold a Good rating, so read their reports for what inspectors said about staffing, about support for people who become distressed and about activities for those who cannot follow a group. Wirral Christian Centre Trust Limited is rated Requires Improvement, and that report names the specific shortfalls, which the provider may have addressed since. Ask the manager what has changed and what evidence supports it. Check the date of each inspection too, since a judgement can be a few years old and staff teams change.
What to watch for on the visit
Ask what dementia training the staff have completed and how often it is refreshed, how many carers are on duty overnight and how settled the team is, because familiar faces count for a great deal. Watch how a repeated question is answered and whether residents are helped to move about rather than left seated for long stretches. Ask how the home handles disturbed nights, refusal of food and walking with purpose, and whether the garden can be used safely. Visit twice if you can, once by arrangement and once unannounced near a mealtime.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Birkenhead
How many dementia care homes are there in Birkenhead?
Birkenhead has 3 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Birkenhead: 2 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Birkenhead were inspected most recently?
Birkenhead Court (12 January 2023), Wirral Christian Centre Trust Limited (11 February 2022) and Summer Fields (17 May 2018) have the most recent CQC reports.
How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Birkenhead?
Contact Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council and ask for an adult social care needs assessment for the person living with dementia. An assessor will go through memory, medication, mobility, daily routines and safety at home, on a visit or by telephone. The assessment is free and does not depend on income or savings. The written outcome is what homes will want to read before offering a place.
Can Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can contribute where the needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. The council pays up to the rate it will meet, with the resident contributing from income such as pensions. Above the threshold, the placement is funded privately until savings fall to that level. Where a property is involved, ask about a deferred payment arrangement.
Which providers in Birkenhead offer dementia care?
Three registered care homes match this search: Wirral Christian Centre Trust Limited, Birkenhead Court and Summer Fields. All three are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Two hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and one is rated Requires Improvement. Each profile gives the provider details and the current rating.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
Both look after people living with dementia, but the registrations differ. A care home provides help with daily living from trained care staff, while a nursing home also has a qualified nurse on site at all times for wounds, feeding tubes, injections and unstable conditions. The three homes listed here are registered for residential care. If nursing needs are expected, mention that during the assessment so the right registration is considered.
How early should we start looking?
Dementia progresses unevenly, so looking before a move becomes urgent is sensible. Where it can be planned, two or three months allows for the assessment, repeat visits and a funding decision. Rooms suited to dementia care are limited and may not be free in the week you need one. If the move follows a hospital stay, tell the ward and the discharge team early what you are looking for.
What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Birkenhead?
Ask what dementia training staff have completed and how many carers are on duty overnight. Ask how the home supports someone who becomes distressed, how disturbed nights are handled and what happens when food is refused. Where a home has been told to improve, ask what has changed since the inspection and what evidence supports it. Finish by asking what the weekly fee includes and what is charged separately.
