- Care Home
We are a residential care home on the Wirral supporting adults with a wide range of needs. The people who live here include older people, younger adults, people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing money, getting out, handling the things that cause anxiety and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. So we start from what somebody wants their life to look like. People keep their own rooms and belongings, have a real say in how the house runs and choose how much they join in. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits. Where consistency matters, as it often does for autistic people, we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available as well as longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and ask us whatever you need to.

- Care Home
Here at Sylvan House, we offer residential care for older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia, right in the heart of Wirral. We also provide respite care for those who need a shorter stay, whether that is planned or at short notice. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the moment someone walks through our door, we want them to feel that this is a place where they are genuinely known and looked after, not simply accommodated. Our team works hard every day to make life here feel as ordinary and comfortable as possible. That means listening to what matters to each person, respecting their routines, and making sure they have a real say in how their days are spent. For those living with dementia, we work to understand the individual behind the condition and tailor our approach accordingly. We want to be straightforward with anyone considering Sylvan House. Our most recent CQC inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating, and we have taken that seriously. We have been working through the feedback with honesty and with a real focus on getting things right. We believe families deserve to know where we stand, and we are committed to demonstrating through our actions that we are moving in the right direction. Wirral is a community we are proud to be part of, and many of our residents have lived locally their whole lives. Keeping those connections alive, whether through visits, outings, or simply familiar faces, matters to us. If you would like to find out more or come and have a look around, we would genuinely welcome the chance to meet you.

- Care Home
Stanhope Court Residential Care Home is on Wirral. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, people with a physical disability and some younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mixed group under one roof means we cannot run the home to a single pattern, and we do not try. What we aim for is a place where people are taken as they come and where support is built around the individual. Some residents want a very structured day. Others want the opposite, plenty of freedom and somewhere steady to come back to. Where someone has a physical disability we pay attention to equipment, access and the amount of help we offer, because being over assisted is a real loss and it creeps in easily. With dementia, familiar faces and a steady rhythm do most of the work, and we treat distress as something with a cause. Where mental ill health is part of the picture we work closely with community teams and raise concerns early. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness or hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit Stanhope Court and ask us anything.

- Care Home
We at Upton Grange are proud to offer warm, dedicated residential care in the heart of Wirral, providing a welcoming home for older people, including those living with dementia. Our setting has been thoughtfully shaped to feel familiar, comfortable, and safe for every resident who joins our community. Nestled within the Wirral peninsula in the CH postcode area, our home benefits from the gentle, community focused atmosphere this part of the North West is known for. Residents enjoy comfortable surroundings designed to support both independence and companionship, with communal spaces that encourage conversation, quiet corners for reflection, and an environment that feels less like an institution and more like home. Families visiting us often comment on the calm, homely feel that greets them at the door. Our specialisms in older person care, residential care, and dementia care mean that every aspect of daily life at Upton Grange is shaped around the needs of the people we support. For residents requiring residential care, this means assistance with the everyday tasks that can become more difficult with age, delivered with patience, dignity, and genuine warmth. For those living with dementia, we focus on creating consistent routines, familiar faces, and meaningful moments throughout the day, helping to reduce anxiety and promote a sense of wellbeing. Our team takes the time to learn each resident's life story, preferences, and personality, so that care never feels generic, but always personal. We understand that choosing care for a loved one is one of the most significant decisions a family can make. That is why we place such importance on open communication with relatives, keeping them involved and informed every step of the way. Whether it is a chat over a cup of tea during a visit or a more formal review of a care plan, we want families to feel as much a part of Upton Grange as the residents themselves. Following our most recent CQC inspection in September 2022, Upton Grange was awarded an overall rating of Good, with Good ratings achieved across all five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. This consistent recognition reflects the everyday commitment of our team to deliver care that is not only safe and effective, but also genuinely compassionate and responsive to the individual needs of each resident. It offers reassurance to families that the standards they would expect for their loved one are being met across every aspect of life at our home. If you are exploring care options in Wirral for an older relative or someone living with dementia, we warmly invite you to learn more about Upton Grange. Choosing the right home takes time, and we are here to answer your questions, share more about our approach, and help you feel confident in the decision you make for your family. Please do reach out whenever you are ready, we would be delighted to welcome you.

- Care Home
Heyberry House is a residential care home on the Wirral, providing care for older people, including residents living with dementia, along with respite stays for shorter periods. We aim for a calm, unhurried household where the day belongs to the people living in it. Residents choose when to get up, what to wear, where to sit and how to spend the afternoon, and our staff help with washing, dressing, mobility, medication and meals. We pay attention to the things that make a day pleasant, including good food, proper conversation and something to look forward to, and we watch health closely, because a change in appetite, sleep or steadiness is usually the first sign that a doctor should be involved. Dementia care is a large part of what we do and we approach it by getting to know the person rather than the diagnosis. What someone did for a living, the music they like, the time they always went to bed, all of it tells us more about supporting them well than a list of tasks ever could. We keep routines steady, keep familiar faces around wherever we can, and look for the reason behind distress rather than simply settling it. Respite is available for planned family breaks and after illness or a hospital stay. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good, and visitors are welcome.

- Care Home
Caldy Manor is a residential care home on the Wirral, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. We also offer respite and short stays. A care home has to earn the word home, and we think that is done through consistency rather than through anything grander. Residents decide when they get up, what they eat, whether they want company or their own space, and who visits and when. Our staff arrange themselves around those decisions instead of the other way round, and we expect them to know a person's preferences rather than look them up each time. For residents living with dementia we keep the day familiar, allow far more time than efficiency would suggest, and try to understand what sits behind anxiety rather than simply calm it. Families help us here, and we ask them to keep telling us about the person, their history and the things that settle them. Where somebody has a physical disability, we get the practical arrangements right and check regularly that they still suit, because comfort changes. Respite stays can give a family carer a planned break or provide support during recovery. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are very welcome to visit and see how we run on an ordinary day.

- Care Home
Caldy Manor is a residential care home on the Wirral, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. A care home is judged by its ordinary days rather than its brochure, so that is where our attention goes. Meals cooked here and eaten at a table. Personal care offered calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Rooms that look like they belong to the person living in them. Staff awake overnight. Enough happening in the house to give the day a shape, and nobody pressed into joining anything they have no interest in. People keep their own routines wherever we can arrange it, because a home that insists everyone rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has quietly stopped being a home. For residents with a physical disability, getting about matters enormously. Accessible bathrooms, the right equipment, and staff who know how a particular person wants to be helped to move. Mobility lost because assistance was inconvenient is easy to cause and very hard to reverse, so we work at preventing it. Where dementia is part of somebody's life we work on familiarity and calm instead of correction, and we ask relatives early for the history that helps us reach a person when they are distressed. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see the home, unannounced if you prefer, and talk to the people who already live here.

Here at Sandstones, we are a care home based in the Wirral, providing a warm and homely environment where older people can feel genuinely comfortable and well looked after. We care for people with a range of needs, including those living with dementia, people who need longer term residential support, and those who require a shorter respite stay while they or their families take a well earned break. We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. From the very first conversation, we aim to be open and honest about what we offer and how we work, so that everyone involved feels informed and reassured throughout the process. Our team works hard to ensure that life at Sandstones feels meaningful and personal. We take time to get to know each person properly, understanding their history, their preferences, and what matters most to them day to day. This helps us provide support that fits around the individual rather than the other way around. For those living with dementia, we are mindful of how important familiarity, routine and a calm atmosphere can be. We work to create an environment where residents feel safe and oriented, with staff who are experienced in supporting people at all stages of the condition. We are pleased to have received a rating of good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the consistent effort our whole team puts in to maintaining high standards of care and wellbeing for everyone who lives here. The Dales Care Home is on the Wirral. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and those with physical disabilities. Respite stays are available. We would rather be straightforward with you. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We accepted the findings, we have been working through them, and anybody considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what is still to be put right. We would think less of a family that did not ask. What we are trying to offer is not complicated, though it is hard to do consistently. A comfortable house where people are looked after properly, treated as adults and left in charge of their own days as far as they are able. That begins with asking how somebody has always lived and then actually working that way rather than fitting people to a routine that suits the rota. Dementia care here depends on familiarity. We keep staffing as steady as we can, we do not hurry anybody, and we take the trouble to learn what reassures a particular person. For residents with physical disabilities we look at equipment and at how the building is arranged so that independence is protected where it can be. Families are welcome through the day and are kept properly informed. Please come and look round, speak to residents and relatives, and judge the place for yourself.

Riversdale is a residential care home on the Wirral for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, and we try to leave people in charge of everything else. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet room with the door closed. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to understand what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a problem to be managed. Families usually know a person far better than any assessment does, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Meals are cooked here, we ask people what they actually want to eat and nobody is hurried through a plate. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round properly.

The Lodge is a residential care home on the Wirral. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for families needing a short break or a period of extra support. We try to keep the place feeling like a house. People wake in their own time, keep their own belongings around them, decide how the day goes and are not hurried through the parts that take longer than they once did. Meals are meant to be enjoyed, and visitors are welcome through the day without booking a slot. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We are not going to write around that. We know which areas were flagged, we have work under way, and we would rather talk it through openly with families than have them come across it elsewhere. Anybody considering a place here is welcome to ask us directly what has changed. Beyond that, what we can commit to is plain dealing. If something goes wrong we will tell you and tell you what we are doing about it. If a relative's needs are changing we will raise it early, while there is still time to think it through properly. - Care Home
The Court is a residential care home on the Wirral. We offer a permanent home to older people who need support with everyday living, and to younger adults whose needs are better met in a smaller setting than a large one. We also take respite bookings, which give a family carer a proper rest in the knowledge that the person they look after is somewhere settled and safe. A good deal of our experience lies in dementia care. That means paying attention to the things that are easy to overlook: keeping the layout and the daily rhythm predictable, giving people time to answer rather than filling the silence for them, and learning enough about someone's earlier life to understand what they are telling us when the words are hard to find. Personal care is given quietly and without fuss, and we encourage people to keep doing whatever they can manage themselves. We would rather be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We have gone through the findings carefully and putting those points right is where most of our attention sits at the moment. We are glad to discuss what has changed and what we are still working on with anyone considering a move here. Anyone thinking about The Court for themselves or a relative is welcome to visit, meet the team and see the place on an ordinary day.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Wirral
Getting the paperwork moving early is the one practical step that reliably shortens the route into residential dementia care, because the assessments run to their own timetable rather than to yours. There are two of them, they serve different purposes, and the first does not depend on money at all.
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care can request an assessment, either for themselves or, with that person's agreement, on their behalf. It is free, it is not means tested, and it sets down what the person can still do unaided, where the risks have become serious and whether support at home could realistically continue. The Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council social care team is responsible for carrying out that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it. Ask for the outcome in writing, because every home on this page will want to know what it concluded before discussing a placement.
Who contributes, and what to pin down
Payment follows the financial assessment rather than the severity of need. Where capital and income fall below the national threshold the council contributes towards the fees at the rate it sets for a placement of that type, and above the threshold the home is funded privately. Fees vary between the homes listed here according to the room, its position in the building and how much support is involved, so ask each for a written schedule distinguishing the weekly charge from anything billed separately. Settle the position on third party top up payments, on annual fee reviews and on what happens to the room during a hospital admission, and keep every answer on paper.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Wirral
Making sense of a divided inspection record
With 12 homes rated Good and five rated as requiring improvement, the ratings on this page split more evenly than in most areas, and the temptation is to discard half the list immediately. Resist it long enough to read the reports. A requires improvement judgement can rest on a records audit or a staffing gap that has since been filled, while another may describe something closer to the heart of daily care. Homes rated Good, among them Upton Grange, Caldy Manor and Stanhope Court Residential Care Home, still differ considerably from one another once you are standing in them.
What actually distinguishes good dementia care
Ask how many staff on each shift have completed dementia training and whether a named person leads that practice, since a clear lead usually means the approach is reviewed rather than assumed. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed late in the day and listen for an answer rooted in knowing the person. Look at whether bedroom doors, bathrooms and corridors can be told apart easily, whether residents can walk about without being steered back, and whether there is somewhere outside they can reach unaccompanied.
Visiting properly
Go unannounced, go at a mealtime, and go twice if you can. Watch whether people are helped at their own pace, whether anything is happening beyond a television in the corner, and whether the manager is out on the floor. Then read the latest report and ask the manager directly what has changed since the inspector left.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Wirral
How many dementia care homes are there in Wirral?
Wirral has 12 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 39 CQC registered care homes in Wirral: 6 Good, 5 Requires improvement, 1 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Wirral were inspected most recently?
Riversdale Nursing Home (21 March 2025), The Court (12 August 2024) and The Lodge (2 September 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Wirral?
Contact Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council adult social care and ask for an assessment, either for yourself or for a relative who has agreed to it. The assessment is free and is not means tested, and it looks at daily tasks, the risks involved and whether residential care is now appropriate. A separate financial assessment normally follows in order to work out who pays. Request the outcome in writing, since the homes on this page will ask what it concluded.
Can Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where a care needs assessment confirms that residential dementia care is appropriate and a financial assessment shows capital and income below the national threshold. The council then contributes towards the fees at the rate it sets for that kind of placement. If a family chooses a home charging more than that rate, a third party top up payment may be needed, and the arrangement should be recorded before the move takes place. Anyone paying privately may still request an assessment, which is often worth doing for the guidance it brings.
Which providers in Wirral offer dementia care?
12 residential care homes registered to support people living with dementia cover Wirral, and all of them are listed on this page. Six hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and five have been rated as requiring improvement. Every one of them has been inspected, so there is published evidence available for each home. Each profile links through to the full inspection report, which is the most dependable way to compare them.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides accommodation, personal care and supervision, with district nurses and general practitioners called in when clinical input is required. A dementia nursing home keeps registered nurses on duty around the clock, which suits someone with continuing medical needs such as complex medication or feeding support. All 12 providers on this page are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Where an assessment identifies nursing needs, the search should be widened to nursing registered homes.
How far in advance should we start looking at dementia care homes?
Sooner than most families expect, because the care needs assessment, the financial assessment and any waiting list can each add weeks. Beginning while the present arrangement is still holding allows more than one visit and leaves the person moving some say in the decision. If a hospital discharge is driving the timing, say so when you contact the council, as those cases are dealt with more quickly. Even under real pressure, reading the most recent inspection report before agreeing to a placement is time well spent.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Wirral?
Ask how many staff on each shift have completed dementia specific training and who leads that practice within the home. Ask how the team supports someone who becomes distressed or restless, and whether relatives help write and review the care plan. Ask about staff turnover, about what fills an ordinary weekday afternoon, and about how food and drink reach someone who no longer asks for them. Finally, ask to see the most recent inspection report and what the home has changed since it was written.
