What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides accommodation together with personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals, medication prompts and daily routine. A nursing home offers that same support and also has registered nurses on duty, so it can meet clinical needs such as complex wound care or tube feeding. A home may only admit residents whose needs match its registration, which is why the difference matters from the beginning. Every provider on this page is registered as a residential care home.

What should we ask when visiting a care home in Lincolnshire?

Ask how many care staff are on duty by day and overnight, how long the manager has been in the role and what happens when a resident becomes unwell. How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Lincolnshire?

Bringing a long list down to size

Travelling time changes how a list this long should be read, because a home twenty miles away is a very different proposition from one in the next street. Relatives who can visit without planning a day around it tend to visit far more often, and regular visitors do more for a resident's wellbeing than any brochure describes. Check when the inspection took place as well, since a change of owner or manager since then can make an older report a poor guide to the home today.

What the visit tells you

Go at a busy time rather than mid morning, ideally around a meal, and watch how staff talk with residents instead of how they talk to visitors. Ask how long the manager has been in post, what turnover among care staff has been like, and what the home does when someone becomes unwell overnight. Requesting a care needs assessment

An assessment of need is the formal starting point and can be requested by anyone who appears to need care, whatever their savings. It examines washing, dressing, eating, mobility, medication and how safely someone manages on their own, then records in writing what care is required. Relatives are entitled to give their own account, which often conveys what a single visit cannot. A separate carer's assessment is available to whoever has been providing most of the support.

What the council contributes

A financial assessment follows and settles the question of contribution.
