Planning and paying for care in Lambeth
Why the assessment comes before the shortlist
Working out the level of care needed before looking at fees saves a great deal of wasted effort, because the assessment shapes which homes are suitable in the first place. Anyone who appears to need care can request one, and savings make no difference to that entitlement. The assessment covers washing, dressing, eating, mobility, medication and how safely someone manages on their own, and it concludes with a written statement of the care required. Relatives can set out their own view, and whoever has been providing most of the support can ask for a carer's assessment too.
How funded support is worked out
A financial assessment follows and decides the contribution. London Borough of Lambeth carries out both assessments and arranges funded placements for those who qualify, taking income, savings and property into account. Families expecting to fund a placement themselves are still entitled to an assessment and to advice, and having one on record proves useful if capital reduces in later years and council support becomes necessary.
Weekly fees and the extras
Fees are quoted by the week and vary between homes, so ask each one to spell out what is covered and what is billed separately. Hairdressing, chiropody, outings and certain therapies commonly sit outside the basic fee. Where a family chooses a home costing more than the council will pay, a third party contribution bridges the difference, and it needs to be sustainable across several years rather than the first few months.
Choosing a provider and what to check
Reading the inspection picture
With twenty one homes rated Good and four at Requires Improvement, the ratings do separate this field, though not finely enough to settle it. The reports carry the useful detail, judging safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and leadership individually and describing what inspectors observed on the day. One home is not yet rated, which usually reflects recent registration rather than any concern. Look at the inspection date as well, since a home that has changed manager since the last visit may run quite differently now.
Matching a home to what is needed
All the providers here are residential care homes, so personal care rather than nursing is what they deliver. Within that, they differ markedly in size and character, from small supported houses to larger established homes such as Deepdene House and Gleneagle House. Being clear about what is needed now, and what may be needed within a year or two, reduces the risk of a second move that nobody wants.
What to notice on the visit
Visit more than once and at different hours, since a home looks calmest mid morning. Watch how staff speak with residents, ask how long the manager has been in post and what turnover has been like, and find out how families are told when something changes. Ask to see a room that is genuinely available rather than a display room kept for viewings, and notice whether the communal areas are being used by residents or simply furnished for show.
