Nursing Homes in East Sussex 75 nursing homes · 56 rated Good by CQC

The point at which a family starts comparing nursing homes in East Sussex is rarely a calm one, and the decision usually has to be made while a ward or a community nurse is already asking where someone will go next. East Sussex County Council is the authority that completes an assessment of care needs, decides whether nursing care is the right way to meet them and carries out the financial assessment that determines who pays what. Seventy registered nursing homes match this search across the county, of which two hold an Outstanding rating and fifty one are rated Good, while fourteen sit at Requires Improvement and three are yet to receive a published rating. That is a largely solid picture with a group that needs closer questioning. Set aside a little time for the profiles below and read the inspection report behind each rating, so the home you choose has been chosen on published evidence and not on whichever bed came free first.

    • Nursing Home

Here at Elstree Court Care Home, we provide nursing care for people living in and around Eastbourne, East Sussex. Our team supports older adults, people living with dementia, those with physical disabilities, and younger adults who require a higher level of care. We also offer respite care for people who need a short stay, whether that is to recover after a hospital admission or to give a family carer some well earned time to rest. We are a nursing home, which means we have qualified nurses on site around the clock. This allows us to care for people with complex and changing needs in a setting that genuinely feels like home rather than a clinical environment. We take the time to get to know each person properly, understanding their routines, their preferences, and what matters most to them day to day. Dementia care is a significant part of what we do, and we approach it with real thought and sensitivity. We recognise that dementia affects people in very different ways, so we work closely with residents and their families to make sure our approach fits the individual rather than the other way around. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us as Good, which reflects the standard of care our team works hard to maintain consistently. We are proud of that rating, though we see it as a measure of where we are now rather than a reason to stand still. Families are always welcome here. We believe that staying closely involved in a loved one's care makes a real difference, and we do everything we can to keep those connections strong. If you are considering care for yourself or someone close to you, please do get in touch. We are always happy to have an honest conversation and show you around.

    • Nursing Home

Woodside Hall Nursing Home is in Hailsham, East Sussex. We care for older people who need registered nursing as well as help with daily living, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Having nurses on duty at any hour is what allows us to support people whose needs are genuinely complex. It means managing medication, skin and pressure care, continence, nutrition and mobility, and keeping a steady eye on health so that a change is noticed early rather than becoming an emergency. Where somebody is nearing the end of their life, it means we can keep them comfortable among people who know them. The clinical side is only half the story. It is easy for a nursing home to become a place where everything happens to people and nothing is decided by them, and we work against that. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, whether they join in and who visits. For people with a physical disability, time is the thing that matters most. Transfers, positioning and personal care all take as long as they take, and rushing is where dignity and safety are both lost. Respite and short stays are available, including after a spell in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us to arrange a visit to Woodside Hall.

    • Nursing Home

Hastings Court is a nursing home in Hastings caring for older people who need qualified nursing alongside help with everyday life, including residents with a physical disability and people living with sight or hearing loss. Nurses are on duty day and night, which means medication, wound and pressure care and conditions that need close monitoring are managed here, and somebody who becomes unwell is seen straight away rather than waiting for an appointment. Many of our residents are living with dementia. We keep the day calm and familiar, keep the same staff working with the same people and take time to understand what somebody means when speech has become difficult. For residents with a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving and positioning comfortably. Where there is sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate, say who we are as we come into a room and take care not to move things without mentioning it. Nursing is the foundation, not the purpose. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, where they sit and who comes to visit, and meals are cooked here with nobody hurried along. Respite stays are available. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round.

Here at Claydon House, we provide nursing home care for older people in the heart of Lewes, East Sussex. We are a small, close knit community and we take genuine pride in knowing each of our residents as individuals, understanding their histories, their preferences and what makes a good day for them. Our team supports people with a range of needs, including nursing care, dementia care and respite care. Whether someone comes to us for a short stay to recover or to recharge, or whether Claydon House becomes their long term home, we aim to make sure they feel settled, respected and genuinely looked after. Dementia care sits at the heart of a lot of what we do. We know how important it is for people living with dementia to feel calm and familiar in their surroundings, and we work hard to create an environment and a daily rhythm that supports that. Our staff take time to understand each person beyond their diagnosis, because who someone is matters far more than what their notes say. For families, we understand that choosing a nursing home for someone you love is not a straightforward decision. We welcome questions, visits and involvement. You should feel confident about where your relative is living, and we want to build the kind of trust where you feel comfortable picking up the phone at any time. Lewes itself is a wonderful town and we feel fortunate to be part of such a distinctive local community. We try to bring that community feeling inside as much as possible, keeping life interesting and meaningful for everyone who lives here. We at Abundant Grace Nursing Home are proud to offer compassionate nursing care in the welcoming coastal town of Seaford, East Sussex. Our home provides a calm and supportive environment where older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia can feel truly at ease. Nestled within the BN postcode area, our setting benefits from the gentle pace and fresh sea air that Seaford is known for, offering residents a peaceful backdrop to everyday life. The South East location places us within easy reach of the wider East Sussex community, making visits from loved ones convenient whilst providing the tranquil atmosphere that supports wellbeing and recovery. Our specialism in nursing care means that residents with more complex health needs receive skilled clinical attention around the clock, delivered with warmth and dignity. For families navigating the often emotional decision of arranging nursing support for a relative, this brings genuine peace of mind. We understand that each person who joins us carries a lifetime of memories, preferences, and personality, and our approach is to honour that individuality in every interaction. For older people, we focus on maintaining independence and quality of life, encouraging residents to continue enjoying the things that matter most to them. Our dementia care is delivered with patience, understanding, and a deep awareness of how to create reassuring routines that reduce anxiety and promote moments of connection. We also welcome younger adults whose needs require a nursing setting, providing care that respects their stage of life and personal goals. Families often ask what truly distinguishes a good care home, and we believe the answer lies in the small, daily moments: a kind word at breakfast, a hand held during a difficult afternoon, a celebration of a birthday, or a quiet conversation about a treasured memory. These are the moments that define life at Abundant Grace Nursing Home. We are pleased to share that the Care Quality Commission rated our home as Good overall following its inspection in October 2022, with Good ratings achieved across all five key areas: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This balanced rating across every domain reflects our consistent commitment to providing care that is not only clinically sound but also genuinely person centred and thoughtfully managed. For families, a Good rating from the CQC offers reassurance that an independent regulator has reviewed the home and found it to be meeting the standards expected of quality nursing care. Choosing a nursing home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we recognise the trust placed in us when a loved one becomes part of our community. If you are exploring options for nursing care, dementia care, or specialist support in Seaford or the wider East Sussex area, we warmly invite you to get in touch. We would be delighted to answer your questions, discuss your relative's individual needs, and help you decide whether Abundant Grace Nursing Home could be the right place to call home.

Bannow Retirement Home is in St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, and we are registered for both residential and nursing care. That matters more than it sounds, because it means somebody whose health declines does not automatically have to move again. The nursing comes to the person rather than the person being sent to find the nursing. We care for older people, a great many of them living with dementia, and respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours. The clinical work is detailed and unhurried, covering medicines, wounds, pain, pressure care and making sure people eat and drink enough. What no procedure can cover is noticing early when somebody is not themselves, and that rests on the same staff knowing the same residents over months. For residents with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings calm, we learn individual histories properly, and we accept that some days are harder than others without treating that as a failure. The sea air does people good, so we get residents outside whenever the weather is on our side. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and look round on a normal afternoon.

We are a nursing home in St Leonards on Sea, caring for people whose needs require qualified nursing alongside help with daily living. We look after older people and younger adults, including people living with mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Having registered nurses on duty means that medication, pain, wounds, continence and the difficulties people have with eating, drinking and moving are managed properly and without waiting, and that a change in somebody's health is picked up early rather than late. Necessary as that work is, it is not the whole of a life, so we try to make sure people still choose when they get up, what they wear, what they would like to eat and who they want beside them. Where somebody is younger and living with a disability or a mental health condition, the ordinary business of having a life of their own matters just as much as the care itself, and it is easily lost in a setting organised around nursing. We try not to lose it. We work closely with general practitioners, community teams, therapists and hospital staff, keep families properly informed, and where someone is nearing the end of life we concentrate on comfort, dignity and the company of those they love. Respite stays are available too. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to.

Mary House is a nursing home in Hastings, East Sussex, providing nursing care for adults living with learning disabilities and autism and adults with physical disabilities. Combining qualified nursing with the support somebody with a learning disability needs is a particular skill, and it is easy to get half right. A place can be clinically safe and still treat people as patients rather than adults, or warm and homely while missing the health problems that people who communicate differently often cannot report for themselves. We try to hold both. Our nursing team manages medication, mobility, nutrition, epilepsy, and the physical health conditions that go under recognised in this group, working closely with GPs, therapists and specialist services. Alongside that runs the ordinary business of life, planned with each person and communicated in the way that works for them, because being understood is the foundation everything else sits on. Respite stays are available for short periods of support or to give a family carer a planned break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we welcome enquiries from families and professionals.

Southlands Place is a nursing home in Bexhill on Sea. We care for older people who need qualified nursing alongside help with daily life, for residents living with dementia and for people whose physical disability requires skilled support. We also care for some younger adults with complex health needs. Having nurses here at all hours means we can manage wound and pressure care, continence and catheter needs, diabetes, pain relief and end of life care, and work closely with GPs, district nurses and hospital teams so treatment is joined up. It also means somebody whose health declines can usually stay with us, among familiar faces, instead of facing another move. Moving and handling forms a large part of our work. Done properly it is unhurried, explained as it happens and carried out with the right equipment, which is the difference between feeling supported and feeling handled. For residents living with dementia we keep surroundings calm, routines predictable and staff consistent. Respite stays are available, including nursing support after a hospital discharge. Freshford Cottage Nursing Home is a nursing home in Seaford, East Sussex. We care for older people who need qualified nursing support alongside help with daily living, and we also offer respite stays for those who need care for a shorter period. Having nurses on site means that clinical needs can be looked after here, in surroundings a person knows, rather than through repeated journeys elsewhere. Just as important is what happens around the clinical care. Meals people want to eat, mornings that are not rushed, time to sit and talk, and the freedom to keep habits that have been a lifetime in the making. Respite is something we take as seriously as permanent care. A family carer who is worn out needs a real break, not a worried one, and somebody recovering after illness or a stay in hospital often needs a few weeks of nursing support before going home. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to gloss over that. We know which areas were identified and we have a plan of work in hand to put them right, and we would rather you asked us directly about it than wondered. Here at Ersham House Nursing Home, we provide nursing and residential care for adults in the heart of Hailsham, East Sussex. We support a wide range of needs under one roof, including dementia care, mental health support, care for those living with physical disabilities, and support for people with visual or hearing impairments. We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements. We know that choosing a nursing home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our team works hard to understand each resident as an individual, getting to know their history, their preferences, and what matters most to them in daily life. Care plans are built around the person, not the other way around. Our most recent CQC rating reflects that there are areas where we need to do better, and we are honest about that. We have been working through a clear programme of improvements and are committed to making the changes needed to raise the standard of care we provide. We believe residents and families deserve straightforwardness, and we would rather be open about where we are than paint a picture that does not reflect reality. Day to day, we aim to create an environment that feels settled and familiar, where residents are treated with respect and where staff take the time to listen. Whether someone is with us for a short stay or has made Ersham House their permanent home, we want them to feel genuinely looked after. We are Avalon Nursing Home in Eastbourne. We care for older people who need qualified nursing alongside support with daily living, including people living with dementia, and we also support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Respite stays are available. Nurses on duty at every hour are what allow us to look after health needs as they change. Medication, wound care, continence, pain and the increasing frailty that often comes with great age can all be managed here, so nobody has to move again simply because their needs have grown. Alongside the nursing we work to keep ordinary life going. People get up when they want, eat what they like, choose where to sit and keep their own belongings and habits. We take the trouble to learn a person's history and preferences, because staff who know somebody well are the ones who notice quickly when they are not themselves. Where we support somebody with a learning disability or an autistic person, we plan individually rather than by category. How a person prefers to be given information, what unsettles them and what a good week looks like to them are the basis of the plan, not an afterthought. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

We are a nursing home in Hailsham, caring for people whose needs require qualified nursing alongside help with daily living. We look after older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. Having registered nurses on duty means medication, pain, wounds, continence and the difficulties people have with eating, drinking and moving can be managed properly and without waiting, and that a change in somebody's health is noticed early rather than late. Necessary as that work is, it is not the whole of a life, so we try to make sure people still choose when they get up, what they wear, what they would like to eat and who they want beside them. Nursing care for a person living with dementia asks for patience above all. We take time to learn about somebody's history, work, music and habits and the things that comfort or unsettle them, because that knowledge does more good than any procedure when a person is frightened or cannot place where they are. We work closely with general practitioners, community teams, therapists and hospital staff, keep families properly informed, and where someone is nearing the end of life we concentrate on comfort, dignity and the company of those they love. Respite stays are available too. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission and are glad to discuss that openly. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to.

Hastings Court is a nursing home in Hastings, caring for older people who need qualified nursing support alongside help with the ordinary business of the day. Our nurses are here at all hours, which allows us to care for people with long term health conditions, those who have become frailer after illness, and those who need careful, dignified care at the end of their lives. We also support people living with dementia and those whose physical disabilities affect how they move, wash, eat or communicate. Good care in both cases comes down to patience and to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about the life lived before we met someone, because that is what tells us how to settle them on a difficult afternoon. Life here follows the people in it. Breakfast is not a fixed event, the kitchen will make a sandwich at ten at night if that is what someone wants, and the day is filled with whatever people actually like doing. Many of our residents have lived in this part of East Sussex for decades, and we make the most of that shared local history in conversation and in the trips we arrange. If you are looking at nursing homes, you are probably tired and short of time. Ring us, tell us what has happened, and we will tell you plainly whether we can help. You are welcome to visit at any time of day, unannounced if you prefer, and to speak with the nurses who would be caring for your relative.

We at The Moreton Centre are proud to offer dedicated nursing care in the welcoming coastal town of St Leonards On Sea, East Sussex. As a nursing home supporting older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia or mental health needs, we provide skilled, compassionate support around the clock. Set within the TN postcode area of St Leonards On Sea, our home benefits from the gentle pace and refreshing sea air that this part of the South East coast is known for. Residents enjoy a setting that feels both restful and connected to the wider community, with the familiar comforts of a residential town close by. The care we provide is shaped around the individual. For older people who require nursing support, our qualified team is on hand day and night to manage complex health needs, administer medication safely, and respond promptly to any changes in wellbeing. For those living with dementia, we focus on creating a calm, predictable routine, using familiar cues and gentle encouragement to help residents feel settled, understood, and respected. Families often tell us that knowing their relative is in a place where staff truly recognise the person behind the diagnosis brings enormous peace of mind. Our experience supporting adults with mental health needs means we understand the importance of patience, consistency, and genuine human connection. We also welcome younger adults whose circumstances mean they require nursing or specialist support, and we tailor our approach to reflect the very different life stages and aspirations of every individual in our care. Whether someone wishes to continue a long held hobby, share a quiet cup of tea with a member of staff, or simply enjoy the rhythm of a familiar daily routine, we aim to make those moments possible. Following our most recent CQC inspection in April 2025, The Moreton Centre received an overall rating of Requires Improvement. We were pleased to be rated Good in the Effective, Caring, and Responsive domains, which reflects the warmth of our team, the quality of the care delivered, and our commitment to meeting each resident's needs as an individual. We recognise that improvements are needed in the Safe and Well-led areas, and we are wholeheartedly committed to addressing these. We view inspection feedback as an opportunity to grow, and our team is actively working to strengthen the way we operate so that every aspect of life at the home reflects the standard our residents and their families deserve. Choosing a nursing home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the care, thought, and emotion involved in that choice. If you are exploring options for a loved one in St Leonards On Sea or the wider East Sussex area, we warmly invite you to get in touch, ask questions, and arrange a visit. We will be glad to show you around, listen to your concerns, and talk openly about how we can support your family at this important time.

Beechwood Grove is a nursing home in Eastbourne providing care for adults who need qualified nursing support through the whole of the day and night. We look after people with health conditions that need regular clinical attention, people who have lost strength and confidence after illness, and people who want comfort, dignity and familiar company in their final weeks and months. The people who live here include older adults, those with dementia and people with physical disabilities, among them younger adults. We write each care plan with the person and their family, and we keep it current. Needs in a nursing home rarely stay still, and a plan that is six months out of date is of no use to anybody. We believe the texture of ordinary days is what makes a home good. Choices are offered at mealtimes and tastes are remembered. People get up and go to bed when it suits them. The day holds music, exercise, crafts, trips out and plenty of unstructured time, and nobody is required to take part in anything. Being in Eastbourne means the seafront is within easy reach, and an outing there is often the highlight of someone's week. Families are welcome at any hour and can share meals with their relatives or take them out for the afternoon. If you are considering a move, call in and see us. We will answer your questions honestly, including the ones about money.

We also welcome younger adults, recognising that care needs are not defined by age alone, and we take great care to ensure that every resident feels seen, heard and valued regardless of their stage in life. For families who need a little breathing space, our respite care offering provides short term support that can make all the difference. Whether it is a planned break for a family carer, a period of recovery following a hospital stay, or a trial stay to help someone consider longer term care, we approach every respite placement with the same warmth and attention to detail as our permanent residents receive. In practical terms, choosing Kingswood House means your loved one will be looked after by a team that understands the interplay between mental and physical health, and that recognises the courage it takes to move into a new environment. We work closely with families, keeping communication open and honest, so that decisions about care are made together and with confidence. Our most recent CQC inspection rated us as Requires Improvement overall, with Good ratings across the Effective, Caring and Responsive domains, and areas identified for further development within Safe and Well led. Evergreen is a nursing home in Hastings, East Sussex. We support older people whose needs include nursing care, and we offer respite stays. Having registered nurses as part of the team means people whose health needs are complex can stay with us as those needs change rather than having to move on again. Families who have already been through one difficult move usually recognise the value of that immediately. We work at keeping the nursing from setting the tone of the place. A nursing home can drift into feeling like a ward, and once it does the rest follows: people stop being asked what they would like, days lose any shape of their own, and relatives begin behaving like hospital visitors. So we keep our attention on ordinary things. Meals worth eating. Getting outside when the weather allows. Help without a long wait. Privacy. Being spoken to as somebody with a working life and a family rather than as a set of conditions. Something we also try to get right is how we talk to families. We keep them in the picture when health changes, and we would rather ring with something small than let a relative discover it on a visit. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Nobody here treats that as permission to stop paying attention.

Queen Alexandra Cottage Homes provides nursing and personal care for older people in Eastbourne, East Sussex. We care for residents with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. Having qualified nurses in the team means that a resident whose health becomes more complex does not have to move on elsewhere. We work closely with doctors, district nurses and therapists when someone's condition changes, and clinical care is given with the same attention to privacy and dignity as every other part of the day. We try to keep nursing in its proper place, which is as one part of a life rather than the whole of it. Residents are asked about their history, their work, their family, their faith and their food, and the day is built from those answers rather than from the rota. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how shared spaces are arranged so that nobody is quietly left out of conversation or activity. Mobility and independence are protected wherever they exist. Families are welcome here and we would far rather hear a concern early than discover later that something was wrong. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we hold ourselves to it in the small things residents notice every day.

Bay House Care is a nursing home in Bexhill on Sea. We provide nursing care for older people and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. People usually come to us at a point of change, often after a hospital stay or when managing at home has stopped being realistic. That is an unsettling time, and much of our work in the first weeks is about helping somebody feel steady again: sleeping properly, eating again, having their own belongings around them and getting their medication right. Nurses are on duty at every hour, so medication, skin care, nutrition, pain and mobility are managed here, and a change in somebody's condition is picked up by people who know how they usually are. Families often tell us the biggest relief is no longer being the ones responsible for noticing everything. We also work at the ordinary parts of the day. People are helped to be up and dressed if that is what they want, to eat food they actually like, to get outside and to see whoever they want to see. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit if you are considering nursing care locally.

St Clare's Care Home is a nursing home in Burgess Hill. Having nursing staff here means that when somebody's health changes it can be met without a move, which spares a frail person a great deal of disruption. Around that, we try to keep life ordinary, with people choosing when to get up, what they eat and how to spend their days. Respite stays are available as well, for a family carer needing a break or for someone recovering after a hospital admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to soften that. Arranging and funding a nursing home place in East Sussex

A nursing home is registered to keep a qualified nurse on duty, which is what allows clinical care to continue in the place someone lives. The practical consequence is that staffing questions deserve more of your attention than the decor of the lounge.

Testing the nursing arrangements

Ask how many registered nurses cover the day shift and the night, and what happens when one calls in sick. Ask which clinical tasks are managed as routine, from pressure care and catheters to diabetes and end of life support, and which would mean a hospital admission instead. Ask who reviews a resident's medicines, how a change in condition is spotted overnight and how quickly the family hears about it.

Using the reports rather than skimming them

Each inspection reaches its own judgement on safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and leadership, so two homes sharing an overall word can differ sharply. Look at the date of the visit, because an older report describes a home as it was rather than as it is. Where a home has been asked to improve, read the findings and then ask the manager what has changed since.

Seeing how the home actually feels

Go at a busy point in the day and notice whether staff address residents by name and how promptly call bells are answered. Ask about activities for those who cannot easily leave their rooms, how relatives are involved in reviews and whether a room can hold familiar things. Ask too how far the home is from the people who will visit most, since that shapes how often they come.

Choosing between nursing homes in East Sussex

Because nursing placements involve both social care and health funding, it helps to understand each route before fees are discussed.

The care needs assessment

An assessment of care needs is free and open to anyone who appears to need support, whatever their savings. A practitioner considers mobility, personal care, medication, cognition and clinical need, then records whether nursing care is the right answer. Where someone is in hospital the discharge team usually starts this, though a family can request it and should chase if nothing moves.

How the funding works

A financial assessment compares capital and income against the national thresholds, and both assessments sit with East Sussex County Council, which also arranges placements for those who qualify. The nursing element may attract a funded nursing care contribution from the health service, paid to the home whatever a resident's means. Where needs are predominantly clinical, continuing healthcare funding is worth asking about.

Checking what the fee includes

Weekly fees vary with room size, whether an en suite is provided and the level of nursing required. Ask for a written breakdown of what the fee covers and what is billed separately, and check how any nursing contribution appears. Ask what notice of an increase is given and what happens to the fee if a resident spends a period in hospital.

Frequently asked questions about nursing homes in East Sussex

Which nursing homes across East Sussex are included?

Seventy registered nursing homes match this search in the county, including Coniston Court, Copper Beech Care Home, Heffle Court and Elstree Court Care Home. Each holds its own registration with the Care Quality Commission describing the care it may deliver and the people it may support. Some are small homes and others larger centres with more than one unit. Opening a profile shows the current rating and registration detail for that home.

What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A care home offers a room with personal support, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and company. A nursing home carries an additional registration requiring a qualified nurse on duty, allowing clinical needs such as wound care, catheter care or tube feeding to be met on site. All the providers listed on this page are registered for nursing care. Where health is likely to decline, choosing a nursing home avoids a further move later on.

What should I ask when visiting a nursing home in East Sussex?

Ask how many registered nurses are on duty by day and overnight, and how absences are covered. Ask which clinical needs are managed on site and which would result in a hospital transfer. Check how care plans are written and reviewed, and how families are kept informed about changes. Ask to see the week's activities and talk to residents and visiting relatives while you are on site.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in East Sussex?

Ask the adult social care team at East Sussex County Council for an assessment of care needs. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative acting with their agreement, or from a professional such as a general practitioner or hospital discharge team. The assessment is free and not means tested. If someone is already in hospital the ward usually starts the process, but a family can follow it up directly.

Can East Sussex County Council pay towards a nursing placement?

It can, where the needs assessment concludes nursing care is the right way to meet someone's needs and the financial assessment supports help with fees. Capital above the upper national threshold means the placement is funded privately, while savings below it usually attract a contribution. The nursing element is looked at separately and may bring a funded nursing care payment from the health service. Where needs are largely clinical, continuing healthcare funding should be raised.

How far ahead should a family start looking?

Because nursing placements are often arranged under pressure, looking early is worth it whenever the direction of travel is already clear. A few weeks gives room to visit, ask about nursing cover and weigh how far relatives will need to travel. Homes with a good reputation hold waiting lists, so an early enquiry costs nothing and keeps options open. If a discharge is imminent, ask whether a short stay could bridge the gap.
