    • Care Home

Arrowsmith Lodge Rest Home sits in Hoghton, and we care for older people from across this part of Lancashire. Residents living with dementia are a large part of our household, we support people living with mental ill health and adults with physical disabilities, we work with people recovering from eating disorders, and we take respite guests. A rest home ought to feel restful, and that is mostly about not being hurried. Help offered at somebody's own pace, meals that are worth sitting down to rather than merely nutritious, and staff who have been here long enough to know that one resident hates being woken and another is up with the birds. Where eating disorders are part of someone's history, mealtimes need handling with tact and absolute consistency, and everyone in the team needs to be doing the same thing. That is a matter of training and communication rather than good intentions, and we treat it accordingly. The countryside around us is worth using, and a short walk or simply sitting out in decent weather does more for a week than most organised activities. Respite is available for families who need a break and for people who need extra support for a few weeks. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the place before you decide anything.

    • Care Home

Dovehaven House is a residential care home in Southport. We provide a home for older people and for younger adults who need support with everyday life, and caring for people living with dementia is a large part of what we do. We are not a nursing home, and it is worth being clear about that. What we offer is residential care: help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals cooked here, laundry done, and staff on duty through the night as well as the day. Doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For most people that turns out to be the right level of support, because it removes the effort and the worry without removing the independence. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A familiar order to the day, the same faces turning up and surroundings that are easy to read will settle somebody more surely than any programme of activities. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what explains them to us when words begin to fail. Southport is a pleasant place to grow old in and we help people get out into it. Respite and short stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Do come and see us.

    • Care Home

We are Meadowfold, a residential home near Blackburn offering short breaks and respite stays for people across Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that and also clear about what it means. It is not a promise that nothing will ever go wrong here. It reflects the fact that we know the people who stay with us well, that our staff are properly supported, and that when something needs putting right we deal with it rather than explaining it away. Short stays are what we are set up for, and that shapes everything. Somebody coming here for a few days has to settle quickly, and that only happens if we have done the groundwork first. So we ask a great deal beforehand: how somebody likes their day to run, what they eat, what they enjoy, and what tends to unsettle them. Then we keep to it. Short breaks give family carers a genuine rest and give the person staying their own time away. Please contact us to look round or discuss a stay.

    • Care Home

Aarondale Care Home provides residential care in Chorley for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities. We also take planned respite stays. Most of what makes a care home work is undramatic and daily. Getting up when you want to, food you actually want to eat, a familiar face on shift, and somebody noticing when you are quieter than usual. That is where we concentrate our effort. For residents living with dementia, familiarity and a calm unhurried approach prevent far more distress than they ever cost. We would rather be plain about our inspection position than leave families to discover it elsewhere. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to argue with the findings. They described genuine shortfalls, and our manager and staff team have been working through them, with tighter medicines practice, clearer record keeping, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so that problems surface quickly rather than quietly. There is more to do and we will not pretend otherwise. If you are thinking about Aarondale for somebody you love, please come and see us, ask what has actually changed since the inspection, and speak to residents and relatives while you are here.

Moorhead Rest Home is in Accrington, and we provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, residents with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become hard to manage, and we try to leave people in charge of the rest. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to work out what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom. Where somebody has a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving safely and comfortably. For residents with sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate and do not rearrange things without saying so. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time, and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody recovering after illness. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Douglas Bank Nursing Home is in Wigan and we provide both residential and nursing care under one roof. That matters to the people who live here, because it means that if someone's health needs change they do not have to move somewhere unfamiliar. Nurses are on duty day and night. We care for older people, residents with a physical disability, people living with sight or hearing loss and younger adults whose needs are best met in a home like ours. Many of our residents are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day calm and familiar, keep the same staff working with the same people and take time to understand what somebody means when speech has become difficult. We also support people living with eating disorders, working alongside the health professionals involved and without judgement at mealtimes or afterwards. Where there is a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving comfortably and safely. For residents with sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate and do not move things without saying so. Residents still choose when they get up, what they eat, where they sit and who visits. Respite stays are available, both after a hospital admission and where a family carer needs a break. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round.

Longcroft provides residential care in Lancaster for older people and younger adults. We support people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autism, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss, and we also support people whose lives have been affected by alcohol or drug misuse. Planned respite stays are available. We treat this as a home first and a care setting second. The people living here have their own rooms, their own routines and a genuine say in how the place runs, and our staff fit around them rather than running everybody to one timetable. Support covers personal care, medicines, meals, money and the practical work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage without us. The detail is where most of the real work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment feel manageable, how much warning they need before something changes, and how they want to be helped are all things we learn from the person rather than assume. For people with mental health needs, and for people recovering from alcohol or drug misuse, consistency and an absence of judgement count for a great deal. Please come and visit, and talk to the people who live here.

    • Care Home

Dercliffe Care Home is a residential care home in Nelson providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to behave like one. Residents here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things ought to be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to fit one routine. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, laundry and getting out and about, but a good deal of what makes a home work is harder to list: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is off colour, and having staff who stay long enough to tell the difference. Meals matter more than people expect. They are one of the few fixed points in a day and they ought to be something to look forward to, so we pay attention to what people actually like rather than what is easiest to produce. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us.

We are St Mary's Gate at Euxton near Chorley, a residential care home supporting older people and younger adults. We care for adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. With that range of people under one roof, a single routine would suit nobody, so we do not run one. People get up when they are ready, eat what appeals to them and spend their days as they choose. What stays constant is that staff are about, and that they know the people here well enough to see when somebody is struggling with something they would not say out loud. Support plans are written with the person and with anyone they want involved, and they are reviewed when circumstances change rather than at set intervals. Where somebody wants to take on more for themselves, we build it up at their pace instead of deciding in advance what is realistic. Communication is central. We take time to learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure new staff learn it before working alone. Where a person has a visual or hearing impairment, that knowledge is shared with everybody. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Fairhaven Care Home is a residential care home in Fleetwood, Lancashire. We support older people who need help with daily life and younger adults who need residential care, and we offer respite stays for short periods. We are a small home and we run like one. Everybody here is properly known, which means our team can tell when somebody is not themselves long before it would show up at a formal review, and that is usually while something can still be put right easily. Residents run their own days. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others or keep to their own room with their own things around them. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs because familiar belongings do more for somebody settling in than anything we could buy. Most of the people who live here come from Fleetwood and the coast nearby, so there is plenty of shared ground and plenty to talk about. Family and friends call in freely and we like it that way. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early rather than late when anything changes. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit us in Fleetwood.

We are Longridge Hall and Lodge, a residential care home near Preston in Lancashire. We provide a home for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also take respite stays. Residential care at its best means helping with the things that have become difficult and leaving everything else in the hands of the person themselves. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, getting about safely, and the ordinary company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs rather than stretching to cover something we should not. Dementia shapes much of our day. We have found that arguing with somebody's account of things achieves nothing, and that knowing who a person has been tells us more than any list of symptoms. Someone who ran a household or worked to a particular rhythm for forty years still carries that, and a routine built around it goes far better than one imposed on top. Respite guests get the same assessment and the same welcome as anyone living here permanently, whether they are recovering after a spell in hospital or giving a family carer a rest. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Thistle Manor is in Clitheroe, Lancashire, and we provide residential and nursing care for adults living with mental ill health whose needs include physical health support. Respite stays are available as well. This is specialised work and we have built the home around it. Registered nurses are on duty at all hours, so medication is managed closely, physical health needs are met on site, and a change in somebody's condition is noticed early by staff who know them rather than during a hurried appointment elsewhere. We work with GPs, district nurses, community mental health teams and hospital staff, and we keep pressing when a resident needs something that is slow to arrive. What we offer beyond that is stability. A team people come to know well, a shape to the week that holds, and a house that does not come apart when somebody has a difficult stretch. Mental health rarely moves in a straight line, and we plan for that rather than treating a bad fortnight as a failure on anybody's part. Support is agreed with the person and written in terms they recognise, and we take their own plans seriously, including plans to move on to something more independent in time. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit and question us closely about how we work.

Bilberry Lodge is a residential care home in Blackburn, Lancashire. We support older people and younger adults, including people living with mental health conditions. A home that takes both older residents and younger adults has to work harder at getting the balance right. People at different stages of life want different things from a day, and it would be easy to let one group set the pace for everyone. We try not to let that happen. Some people want company from the moment they get up, others want to be left alone until the afternoon, and both are reasonable ways to live. Supporting people with mental health needs asks for consistency more than anything else. Knowing what a difficult period looks like for a particular person, what helps early on, and what is simply part of who they are rather than a sign that something is wrong. We plan that with each person and with the professionals involved in their care. Respite stays are available for short periods of support or to give a family carer a planned break. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We are glad to answer questions and to show anyone around who is considering a place here.

Aughton Park is a residential care home in Ormskirk, Lancashire, caring for older people, including many living with dementia. Families usually reach us tired. The decision to move a relative into a care home is rarely taken lightly and often follows a long stretch of managing at home with too little help. One of the most useful things we can do early is take some of that weight off, be honest about what we can and cannot offer, and make it possible for a daughter or a husband to go back to being family rather than a carer who never gets an evening off. For the person moving in, the first weeks are what count. We want to know how they have always run their day, what they are proud of, who they want to hear from, what unsettles them and what makes an afternoon good. We write it down, we use it, and we keep correcting it as we learn. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Broadfield House is a residential care home in Leyland, and we look after older people who need support with daily life, including people living with dementia. We also support some younger adults whose needs are better met in a small residential setting than at home. What we offer is help with the ordinary things, delivered without fuss. That means assistance to wash and dress, medication managed properly, meals cooked on the premises and someone on hand at night. Beyond that, life here is whatever our residents want it to be. Some join in with everything going on in the lounge, some prefer their own room with the radio and a visitor or two, and both are perfectly fine by us. Dementia care rests on familiarity. Keeping faces, routines and surroundings consistent reduces a great deal of the anxiety that comes with memory loss, so we plan rotas with that in mind and take time to learn each person's history from the family. Respite stays are available for anyone needing a short period of support, whether to give a family carer a break or to regain confidence after a stay in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families across Lancashire are welcome to visit, meet the team and see the place for themselves.

    • Care Home

The Sand Dunes is a residential care home in Lytham St. Annes supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults building a life of their own. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out locally, including down to the front. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available and give family carers a proper break. Please get in touch if you would like to come and see the house.

Hennel Lane is a residential care home in Preston. We support older people needing help with daily living, adults who have a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability and people whose sight or hearing is impaired. We also support some younger adults. Support is agreed with each person rather than handed out. For some it is help with personal care, medication and daily routines. For others it is practical assistance with cooking, laundry, money and appointments. For others again it is mainly having reliable people nearby while they get on with their own interests, work or social life. Where somebody has a physical disability we take the time that moving and transfers properly require, using the right equipment and explaining as we go. Where sight or hearing is impaired we keep belongings where they are expected and make sure we have been understood. For the autistic people we support, notice of change and attention to noise and busyness in shared areas make the greatest difference. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families across Lancashire are welcome to visit. Please contact us to arrange a time.

    • Care Home

Fairways is a residential care home in Morecambe specialising in dementia care. Dementia is not a sideline here, it is what we are set up for, and that shapes how the house is run from the moment somebody wakes up. We keep the day calm, familiar and unhurried. The same staff work with the same residents so that faces and voices are known, the surroundings stay recognisable, and we explain what is happening as we go rather than assuming somebody will simply follow. Where a resident wants to walk about, we make that safe instead of asking them to sit down, and when somebody becomes distressed we look for the reason rather than treating it as a symptom to be managed. Help with washing, dressing, medication and meals is given in a way that protects dignity and keeps as much independence as possible. Mealtimes are unrushed, food is cooked here and we ask people what they actually want. Families know a person far better than any assessment, and what they tell us about a life, a habit, a favourite chair or an old job shapes how we care. Visitors are welcome and we would always rather hear a concern early. Respite stays are available and can give a family carer a genuine break. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

    • Care Home

Oakenshaw House is a residential care home in Rochdale supporting younger adults, including people who have a learning disability and people who are autistic. Everyone here has a support plan they have had a hand in shaping. For some people the priority is practical skills, cooking, budgeting, using public transport and managing a routine, with a view to greater independence later on. For others it is about having consistent support in place so that life can be steady, sociable and enjoyable without constant upheaval. We keep the house calm and predictable. The autistic people we support tell us that knowing what is coming matters enormously, so we plan ahead, we explain changes before they happen and we take sensory needs seriously when we organise shared spaces and activities. When somebody is finding things difficult, our starting point is to work out why rather than to manage the behaviour and leave the cause alone. Rochdale has plenty going on and we encourage people to be part of it, whether that is college, a job, a club or simply a regular trip into town. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

The Central @ GS is a residential care home in Blackburn supporting younger adults, including people with learning disabilities and autism, people with physical disabilities, and people living with sight or hearing loss. We are a home for adults who need support to live well, not a place people are sent to be looked after, and that distinction shapes almost everything we do. People here have their own routines, interests and plans, and our job is to make those possible. That means practical help with personal care, medicines, cooking and managing a household, and it also means support to get out, to keep up with friends and family, to attend college or work or activities, and to make decisions about ordinary things like what to eat and how to spend money. Where someone communicates in their own way, we learn it. Where someone needs the day to be predictable, we keep it predictable, and we prepare people properly for the changes that cannot be avoided. We also offer respite stays, which gives families who provide support at home a planned break and lets people try us out without a long commitment. If you are looking for somewhere for a relative, please come and visit. Ask what a typical week looks like, ask how decisions get made, and talk to the people who live here, because they will tell you more than we can.

    • Care Home

Freehold Cottage Residential Home is in Rochdale. We support adults who need help with daily living, including people living with mental health conditions. Ours is a household rather than a unit, and we think that matters. People come and go, use the kitchen, have visitors and organise their own time as far as they are able. The support sits underneath ordinary life rather than replacing it. Good mental health support is largely a matter of consistency and knowing people well. We work with the same residents over long periods, we learn what a difficult stretch looks like for each person and what tends to help, and we keep close working relationships with community mental health teams, GPs and social workers so that support does not fall apart between one part of the system and another. Some of the people living here are working towards greater independence, and we plan that with them rather than for them. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a planned break or to provide extra support through a difficult period. Our home in Morecambe supports a mixed group of adults. Some of our residents are older people who need help with the practical parts of the day, including those living with dementia. Others are adults with a learning disability, autistic adults or people with mental health needs, and many are younger adults who want support to run their own lives. Planning for individuals is what makes that work. One person may want help to wash and dress and then to be left in peace. Another may want staff alongside them cooking, going out into the town, getting to an appointment or working through something that has gone wrong. We pay attention to how each person communicates, what they find difficult and what helps them settle, and we build the plan with them and with the people who know them well. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent. For residents with mental health needs a calm, predictable household does more good than anything written down, and we work with local services and doctors. Everyday life includes cooking, shopping, keeping your own room as you want it and getting out for some air by the bay. Respite stays are available. Alsley Lodge is a residential care home in Ormskirk, caring for older people who can no longer manage comfortably at home. We keep the feel of a house rather than an institution. People rise when they are ready, keep their own belongings and routines around them and have a genuine say in how their day goes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it, and we are also clear eyed about what it means. A rating reflects a point in time. What keeps a home good is the ordinary daily effort, knowing what each person likes for breakfast, noticing that someone has gone quiet, making sure a family gets a call before they have to ring us. That is where our attention goes. We also offer respite stays, both for people who need care for a short while after illness and for family carers who need a proper break. Short stays are planned with the same care as a permanent move, so nobody arrives feeling like a visitor in somebody else's home. If you are considering a care home in this part of Lancashire, we would rather you came and saw the place than took our word for anything. Come at a time that suits you, talk to the people who live here and ask the team whatever you want to know.

Villarose Rest Home is in Lytham St Annes, and we care for older people who are finding it hard to manage alone but who do not need nursing care. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and the ordinary business of the day, without taking over the parts somebody can still do themselves. What we care most about is that this feels like a home rather than a place where people are kept. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they watch and whether they want company or their own quiet room. Nobody is moved along to suit a timetable. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome without appointment, and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. Being close to the front means getting out for some air is easy, and many of our residents have known this stretch of coast for years. We also offer respite stays. These can give a family carer a genuine rest, help somebody regain strength after illness, or let a person see what living here is like before making any lasting decision. The Meadows is a residential care home in Leyland, Lancashire. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people living with mental health conditions. Having a mixed group under one roof is something we plan for rather than something that simply happens. A younger adult working towards more independence and an older resident who mainly wants a settled, unhurried day want very different things from a week, and support here is built around the individual rather than around a single house routine. What we provide is residential care. Staff are on duty through the night as well as the day to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals, while doctors and district nurses come in for clinical needs. For autistic residents and people with a learning disability we pay particular attention to predictability. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and real choice head off far more difficulty than any response after the event. Where somebody is distressed, we look at what is being asked of them rather than treating the person as the problem. Leyland is on the doorstep, and keeping up with family, friends, work or college is part of ordinary life here. Respite stays are available. Wellington Road is a small residential care home in Preston supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Being small means the team know each person properly rather than relying on written handovers, which matters enormously when somebody communicates in their own way or when a change in mood is the first sign that something is wrong. We spend time learning how a person tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure everybody reads those signs the same way. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace rather than ours. Respite stays are available as well, for people needing short term support and for families who need a break. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Until we do, the fairest way to judge us is to visit, see how people here spend their day and ask the team what they know about the people they support.

Stanley Lodge Residential Home is a care home in Forton, Lancashire, providing residential care for older people, including people living with dementia. We are a country home in a quiet spot, and the pace of the place reflects that. The help we offer is the everyday kind: support with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked here, assistance with mobility, and somebody always around when a person wants them. What people take from us varies. Some are in the lounge from breakfast onwards, some prefer their own room with the door open, and neither preference gets any comment. For those living with dementia, we have found that the useful things are unglamorous. A steady routine, staff who do not change constantly, surroundings that make sense, and time to sit with someone rather than hurry them along. We plan around that rather than around activity timetables that look good on paper. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would always rather hear a worry early. We also take people for short respite stays, which can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Keer Sands Residential Home is a care home in Carnforth, Lancashire, providing residential care for older people, along with shorter respite stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We raise it early because it says something about how the home is run rather than about any single thing we do. Staff who stay for years, so that people are looked after by faces they know well. Days that belong to the person living them. Meals that people actually want to eat. Families who are treated as part of the household and who feel able to say when something is not right. The care itself is the ordinary sort, done carefully: help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person wants company or reassurance. Carnforth and the country around it matter to the people who live here, many of whom have spent their lives locally, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors and a good deal of flexibility about when family can come. Respite stays can cover a holiday or a spell of recovery after illness. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

Mather Fold House is a residential care home in Preston supporting adults with learning disabilities. We treat the house as belonging to the people who live in it, and we try to behave like people who are there to help rather than people who are in charge. People arrange their own rooms, take part in the shopping and cooking as much as they want to, and decide how their days are spent. We support people to get out to work, to college, to clubs, to appointments and to see family, because a home is somewhere you go out from and come back to. Support is individual and agreed with the person. Some here need a great deal of help and others very little, and both are entirely normal. We put real weight on communication, using speech, signing, symbols, objects of reference or simply the understanding that grows from living alongside somebody over a long period. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us if you would like to come and see the house.

Bushell House is a residential care home in Preston for older people who need care, company and a settled place to live. We are a house rather than an institution, and the day here has the ordinary shape of meals, conversation, fresh air and rest. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we call in community health professionals whenever something more clinical is needed. Just as important are the things that are harder to write into a care plan: being listened to, having proper conversation, and somebody noticing when a resident seems quieter or less well than usual. We keep an eye on how people are eating and sleeping, because those are often the first signs that something needs attention. Respite stays are available as well. They give family carers a proper break, and they let somebody find out how the home feels before any permanent decision is taken. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. 185 Watling St Road is a small residential care home in Preston, Lancashire. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults and people living with mental ill health, and we also offer respite stays arranged in advance. We are a house on an ordinary street and we like it that way. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, they help plan the meals and the shopping, and they take part in running the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and money, and it covers helping somebody get out to the things that matter to them locally. Because we support people living with mental ill health alongside people with learning disabilities and autistic people, we pay close attention to what each individual needs from their environment. For one person that may mean quiet and a predictable routine; for another it may mean company and something to do. We ask, we watch, we record what works, and we take advice from the community teams who know people well. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are a family member or a professional considering a placement here, please arrange to come and visit, meet the residents and see how the house actually runs.

Croft House Rest Home is a residential care home in Preston, Lancashire. We offer a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also provide respite stays for people who need care for a short period or whose regular carer needs a rest. The people who live here need different things from us. Many need help with personal care, mobility, medication and meals. A number are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day familiar, keep the same staff around and work at their pace. We also support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much somebody can do independently. We should be honest about our standing. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out plainly than have you come across it elsewhere. We understand what the inspectors told us, we are working through it, and we will discuss any of it with anybody considering a place here or already living with us. What we are working towards is a house that feels like a home: food cooked here that people actually want, somewhere quiet as well as somewhere sociable, and visitors welcome without an appointment. Please come and see us and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Mapledale is a residential care home in Chorley, Lancashire, providing a home for a varied group of people: older adults, younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people with loss of sight or hearing, and people living with mental health conditions. That breadth works because we build support around the individual rather than around a label. One person may need help with almost every part of the day and another very little, and both live here on the same footing. We ask each person what a good day looks like for them, write it down in a form that makes sense to them, and change it when they tell us to. Communication gets particular attention, using speech, signing, symbols or simply the understanding that comes from knowing somebody well. For people with sensory loss we adapt how rooms are lit and how we approach and announce ourselves. People here are supported to get out to work, college, clubs and family, and to be as involved in running the house as they want. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Albert House Residential Home is a care home in Colne, Lancashire, providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, along with shorter respite stays. We try to keep the home domestic rather than institutional. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. Some are in company from breakfast onwards and some would far rather have their own room and the paper, and neither preference draws any comment from us. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the staff familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and move around in. Colne is home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors from local groups, and family welcome whenever they wish to come. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.

Aykroyd Lodge is a care home in Burnley. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people managing a mental health condition, mostly younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out at the start than let a family find it later. The inspection identified things that were not good enough for the people living here, and we have accepted that. Anyone considering us should ask precisely what was found and precisely what has changed since, and should not settle for a general answer. What we are working towards has not changed. The people here are adults with their own preferences, and support should be planned with each of them individually: how the week should run, what they want to do for themselves, how they communicate and what makes a place feel safe rather than unsettling. Routines are kept steady and changes are explained in advance. Please visit before deciding anything. Meet the people living here, read the inspection report in full and judge us on what you find rather than on what we write about ourselves.

Holme Manor Care Home is a residential home in Rossendale, Lancashire. We are a permanent home to older people, and we also offer respite stays for those who need care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. Most of our residents need help with washing and dressing, moving about safely, medication and meals, and reassurance that somebody is nearby at night. Many are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate wing. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own belongings and habits, and somebody who is anxious gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people living with mental ill health, working alongside community mental health colleagues so that what happens here fits with the rest of a person's care. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, the valley views are worth having, and visitors do not need an appointment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Deciding on a care home is not something to do from a brochure, so please come and visit and talk to whoever is on duty.

The Bungalow is a small residential care home in Accrington, Lancashire, and we support younger adults. We also offer respite stays, planned in advance so that a short stay means arriving somewhere familiar rather than somewhere strange. Being small is the point here rather than a limitation. The people who live with us are known properly, the staff supporting somebody are the same faces week to week, and the house can be run around the residents instead of around a timetable. People choose how their rooms look, have a real say in the meals and the shopping, and get involved in cooking, laundry and looking after the place as much as they want to. Support covers personal care where it is needed, medication, health appointments and managing money, and it covers helping people get out to whatever matters to them locally. Because we are working with younger adults, we are also interested in what comes next. Where somebody wants to work, study, volunteer or build towards more independence, we help them do it at their own pace rather than treating this as the end of the road. Every plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and professionals are welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Park Grove Care Home is a residential care home in Ormskirk providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays.

Fernbank Lodge is a residential care home in Morecambe, Lancashire, supporting adults living with mental health conditions alongside older people who need residential care. This is somewhere people live rather than somewhere they have been placed. What helps most here is a settled environment, a structure to the week that can be relied upon, and staff who know somebody well enough to notice when things are shifting, often before the person feels able to say so. Support can include help with medication, personal care where it is needed, managing a household, budgeting, getting to appointments and taking part in ordinary life beyond these walls. Where somebody has goals of their own, we plan support that steps back as they step forward. We support younger adults alongside older residents, and we take care not to treat people as a single group with one set of needs. Where someone needs help from two of us, they get it promptly and without fuss. The house itself is not grand and we do not pretend otherwise. 13 Durham Avenue is a small residential care home in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. We support older people and adults with learning disabilities, including autistic adults and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays. Because the people who live here have quite different needs, we take care to be specific rather than general. For an older resident that may mean unhurried help with washing and dressing, safe support with moving about, medication given properly and somebody nearby at night. For an adult with a learning disability or an autistic adult it may mean a predictable routine, clear information given in good time, help to manage money and appointments, and support to get out to a job, a course or a club. Each plan is written with the individual and reviewed properly. Being a small house is an advantage here. People are known rather than processed, the staff who support somebody are the same faces week to week, and it is possible to run the place around the residents rather than around a timetable. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Anyone considering a placement is welcome to visit, meet the people who live here and see how the house actually runs.

Arranging and funding a care home place in Lancashire

Distance does much of the filtering

Distance does more of the work than families expect across an area this size, and it is worth applying before any other criterion. A home that relatives can reach in twenty minutes will be visited far more often than one an hour away, and frequent visitors are among the strongest protections a resident has. Once the geography is settled, the field usually shrinks to something that can be studied properly. Only then does it make sense to weigh ratings, size and specialism against one another.

What the inspection report adds to the rating

Ratings across the 321 homes listed here run from Outstanding down to Inadequate, with some homes not yet rated at all, so the headline word genuinely distinguishes them. It should still be treated as a starting point. The report behind it scores safety, effectiveness, caring, responsiveness and leadership separately, and a home can perform strongly in one of those and poorly in another. The date matters too, because a home that has changed owner or manager since the last inspection may bear little resemblance to the report.

Seeing a home for yourself

No report replaces a visit. Go at a busy hour, ideally around a meal, and watch how staff speak with residents rather than with visitors. Ask how long the manager has been in post, what turnover among care staff has looked like, and what happens when someone becomes unwell overnight. Homes such as Altham Care Home, Henley House and Clayton Brook House each carry a full profile here with their inspection history attached.

Choosing between care homes in Lancashire

The care needs assessment

An assessment of need is the formal way in, and anyone who appears to need care may request one whatever their savings. It looks at washing, dressing, eating, mobility, medication and how safely someone manages alone, then sets out in writing what care is required. Relatives can contribute their own account, which frequently captures what a single visit would miss. Whoever has been providing most of the support is entitled to a separate carer's assessment.

Where the council comes in

A financial assessment then decides who pays what. Lancashire County Council is responsible for both assessments and for arranging funded placements where someone qualifies, taking income, savings and property into account. Even families who will plainly fund a placement themselves are entitled to an assessment and to advice, and having one on record is valuable if capital falls in later years and council support becomes necessary.

What the weekly fee covers

Fees are quoted by the week and differ considerably between homes, so ask each one exactly what the figure includes. Hairdressing, chiropody, outings and certain therapies are commonly charged on top. Where a family selects a home costing more than the council will fund, a third party contribution covers the gap, and it should be tested for affordability over several years rather than the first alone.

Ratings run the full range, so the profiles reward comparison rather than assumption. Filtering by area first is usually the most practical way through a list of this size.

What is the difference between a care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home provides accommodation together with personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, medication prompts and daily routine. A nursing home offers the same support and additionally employs registered nurses on site, so it can meet clinical needs such as complex wound care or tube feeding. A home may only admit residents whose needs match its registration, which is why the distinction matters from the outset. All the providers on this page are registered as residential care homes.

What should we ask when visiting a care home in Lancashire?

Ask how many care staff are on duty by day and overnight, how long the manager has been in the role and what the home does when a resident becomes unwell. Ask to see a sample care plan, then find out how often plans are reviewed and how relatives are told about changes. Fees deserve equally direct questions about what is included, what is billed separately and how increases are announced. Judge the answers alongside what you observe, particularly whether residents seem settled and occupied.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Lancashire?

Contact the adult social care team at Lancashire County Council and ask for an assessment of need. It is free and open to anyone who appears to require care, whatever their income or savings might be. A social care worker will consider daily tasks, mobility, medication and safety, normally during a visit at home, and family members can join in and add their own observations. The written outcome then guides which of the care homes in Lancashire would be able to meet those needs.

Can Lancashire County Council fund a care home placement?

It can, but only once a care needs assessment and a financial assessment have both been completed. The needs assessment must confirm that residential care is the right form of support, while the financial assessment examines income, savings and property to establish the personal contribution. Where funding is agreed, the council normally pays up to a set weekly rate, so a family choosing a more expensive home may need to find a third party contribution. Beginning both assessments early keeps the decision unhurried.

How far ahead should a family start looking?

Sooner than most people plan for, because assessments, financial checks and waiting lists all take time. A few months of lead time allows for repeat visits, a careful reading of inspection reports and a considered second opinion on any home under serious thought. When a move follows a hospital stay the decision may need making within days, which is exactly when a prepared shortlist earns its keep. Even a rough list of three or four homes is far better than starting cold.
