About The Shieling

The Shieling is a residential care home in Epsom supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults, and people living with sight or hearing loss. We are a small home, and that is central to how we work, because it lets the team know each person properly rather than relying on written handovers. Much of our work is about communication. We take time to learn how someone tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure everybody on the team reads those signs the same way. Once you know that, the rest tends to follow, because you can keep life predictable enough for someone to relax and spot early when something is wrong. Life here is not run to a schedule. People choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much as they want to of the ordinary business of running a house. Where someone wants more independence, we look for the practical steps towards it. Respite stays are available as well, for people needing short term support and for families who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better measure, though, is whether people here seem at ease. Come and see, and ask the team about the people they support.
