What nursing care in Lincoln involves and what to look for

Why registration is the starting point

Nursing registration changes what a home is permitted to do, and that is where any comparison should begin. Every home listed here can carry out clinical care on site: wound dressings, catheter and stoma management, support with feeding tubes, and medication that calls for professional judgement rather than a prompt. A residential home may offer warmer surroundings and a lower weekly fee, but it cannot lawfully meet a regular nursing need. If a hospital team or district nurse has already said nursing input is needed daily, this list is the right place to be looking.

The inspection picture across Lincoln

Twenty three nursing homes serve Lincoln, and the ratings are more mixed than families often expect. Fourteen are rated Good, seven have been told they require improvement, and two carry no published rating as yet, which usually means they have not been inspected since registering. Almost a third of the list therefore sits below Good, so ratings genuinely matter when narrowing the field. Read the report rather than the headline: concerns about staffing levels or medicines management are a different matter from concerns about paperwork, and a home may have changed considerably since the visit.

What only a visit will tell you

Ask how many registered nurses are rostered by day and by night, and how often those shifts fall to agency staff, because continuity of nursing is what holds a care plan together. Watch whether residents are up and dressed as they would choose, whether staff know people by name, and whether mealtimes are unhurried. Ask what the home does when someone deteriorates overnight and how it works with the local GP practice. Homes on this list, from Eastholme Care Home and Martin Hall Nursing Home to Eccleshare Court and Grosvenor Hall Care Home, share a city and little else, so visiting twice at different hours is time well spent.

Getting an assessment and funding a place in Lincoln

The care needs assessment

Everyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to a care needs assessment, regardless of savings, and it is this assessment that records whether nursing care rather than residential care is required. Request one from the Lincolnshire County Council adult social care team, or ask the ward to arrange it if the person is in hospital, so that it is finished before any discharge date is agreed. A separate financial assessment then measures income and capital against the national thresholds to establish the contribution. Completing both before you commit avoids agreeing to fees that later prove impossible to meet.

Fees and the help available

Nursing home fees sit above residential fees because qualified nursing cover is part of the weekly rate, and they vary between homes in Lincoln according to the room, the setting and the level of need. Anyone assessed as needing care from a registered nurse attracts the NHS contribution known as funded nursing care, which is paid directly to the home and reduces the nursing element of the bill. Where health needs dominate, a person may qualify instead for NHS continuing healthcare, which meets the whole cost. Where capital falls below the national threshold, Lincolnshire County Council contributes towards the fees while the resident pays an assessed amount from income. Ask for the fee schedule in writing and check what falls outside it before signing.
