Home Care in East Sussex 107 home care agencies · 78 rated Good by CQC

- 6 Requires improvement
- 23 Not yet rated
Putting the home care agencies that cover East Sussex on a single screen is what this listing does, so the differences between them surface without hours of searching. One hundred and five agencies match, every one registered to provide personal care in people's own homes rather than in a residential building. Their CQC records take in Outstanding, a substantial group rated Good, some providers at Requires Improvement and others registered too recently to have been inspected and so not yet rated. East Sussex County Council is responsible for carrying out care needs assessments and for the financial assessment that decides how much of the cost a household meets. Agencies here include Curant Care, Dinarie and Home Instead, all rated Good, alongside providers covering only particular towns. When you have a shortlist, open each profile and read the CQC inspection report rather than stopping at the rating, since what the inspectors describe is the service you would actually be buying.

- Home Care
We provide care at home to people living in Eastbourne and across East Sussex, working with older people and younger adults, with people living with dementia, with people managing mental health conditions, and with people who have physical disabilities or a visual or hearing impairment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather state that at the outset than have anybody come across it elsewhere. It is not where we intend to be. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it, and anyone considering our support should feel free to ask exactly what is being changed, who is responsible for it and what evidence there is that it is making a difference. We will answer plainly rather than in generalities. The work itself continues meanwhile and it matters to the people who depend on it. Our carers help with personal care, medication, meals, household tasks and getting out of the house. What we are concentrating on are the foundations of reliable home care, which means consistency of carers, accurate records at every visit and proper oversight of what actually happens rather than what the schedule says should happen.

- Home Care
County Medicare Professional Nursing & Care supports people in and around Heathfield in their own homes. Our purpose is straightforward, which is to make it possible for somebody to stay where they want to be for as long as that is sensible and safe. Most of our work is with older people who need help with the ordinary things that have become harder, washing and dressing, medication, preparing meals, shopping and getting out of the house. We also support younger adults, whose circumstances and priorities are often very different from what people expect of home care, and we plan their support around what they actually want rather than handing out a standard package. We try to send the same carers to the same people week after week. It sounds like a small point of scheduling, but it is the difference between being looked after by somebody who knows you and being visited by a stranger with a list. It also means our team notice quickly when something has changed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Ring us and we will tell you plainly what we can offer.

- Home Care
Walfinch Eastbourne is a home care agency supporting people in their own homes across the town and the surrounding area. We visit older people and younger adults. Calls range from half an hour in the morning to help somebody wash, dress and get going, through to several visits a day covering medication, meals, safe movement around the house, shopping and appointments. For a good many people a single visit each morning is what makes the rest of the day possible. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We would rather set that out here than have a family come across it later, and we would encourage anyone considering us to meet the manager and ask for references. Continuity is what we guard most carefully. A care worker who has visited the same person for months notices the change that a stranger would walk straight past, and that noticing often prevents a hospital admission. If you are arranging care at home locally, please get in touch and we will come out and talk it through.

- Home Care
A1 Quality Homecare in Eastbourne provides support at home for people across the town and the surrounding part of East Sussex. We work with people living with dementia, people with a physical disability, people with sight or hearing loss, people managing mental health conditions or an eating disorder, and people working through difficulties with alcohol or drugs. Everything begins with a proper conversation in your own home about your routine, your preferences and where help would make the biggest difference. Visits can cover personal care and medication, cooking, shopping and housework, getting out to appointments, or company for somebody who sees very few people in a week. Because the range of needs we cover is wide, we think carefully about matching carers to the people they visit, since the right fit makes more difference than anything written in a plan. Once a good match is working we protect it, keeping the same small team going to the same person. Familiarity does more good than almost anything else we can offer, particularly for somebody living with dementia. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat it as the standard we are expected to hold rather than an achievement to display, and we keep asking the people we visit and their families whether we are doing what we promised. If you would like to talk about care at home in this area, please get in touch.

- Home Care
A Caring Heart provides home care to older people and younger adults living in and around Eastbourne. We keep our remit narrow on purpose, because it lets us do the work properly rather than spreading ourselves thin. What we offer is help with washing and dressing, with medication, with preparing meals and seeing that they are actually eaten, with shopping and laundry, with getting out to appointments, and with the practical business of keeping a household going when that has become too much to manage alone. Visits are arranged around the day the person wants to have rather than the day that suits a rota. If somebody has always been up by half past six, we do not ask them to start waiting until nine. Where we cannot do something, we say so plainly rather than promising and then disappointing. We keep the same small group of carers going to the same people. Familiarity is what makes personal care bearable for the person receiving it, and a carer who knows somebody notices the missed meals or the new unsteadiness long before anybody else would. Please contact us if you would like to talk about support at home in Eastbourne, and we will come out and discuss it with you.

- Home Care
We provide care at home in Eastbourne and the surrounding area. Those we visit include older adults, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Care at home works when the detail is right. Which arm goes into the sleeve first. Whether the tea comes before or after the tablets. Whether somebody wants conversation first thing or would rather not be spoken to until they have properly woken up. We write these things down, pass them between carers, and follow them, because getting them wrong quietly undermines everything else however well the tasks were completed. Where somebody has a sight or hearing impairment we agree at the start how we will announce ourselves and how we will communicate, and we keep to it. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we prefer to state that clearly rather than write around it. Until then we would ask families to judge us on the things they can check: how we recruit and train, who we send, whether we arrive when we said we would, and what the people we already visit have to say about us.

- Home Care
We provide care at home in Heathfield and the surrounding parts of East Sussex, supporting older adults, people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss and younger adults. Working across a rural area means being honest about distance. A round that looks efficient on paper falls apart on a wet morning on country lanes, and it is the person waiting to be helped out of bed who pays for that. So we build schedules that survive an ordinary bad day and we would rather take on less than let somebody down. Isolation is a real part of what we deal with here. For several of the people we visit we are the only caller that day, so we plan enough time for the conversation rather than treating it as optional. Where sight or hearing has gone we agree how we will announce ourselves and every carer uses the same approach consistently. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we prefer to state that plainly than leave the gap unexplained. Ask us how we recruit, train and check our carers, and meet them beforehand.

Arranging and funding home care in East Sussex
How a package of visits is built
Care at home is purchased in blocks of time, which means support is arranged around particular points in the day rather than provided continuously. Many households start with a morning call covering washing, dressing and medication, then add a teatime or bedtime visit as needs increase. Others buy something quite different, such as a weekly visit for bathing or a longer session that lets a family carer leave the house with an easy mind. Because the arrangement is made of parts, it can be enlarged, reduced or retimed without anybody having to move.
Making sense of the ratings
Every agency on this page is registered with the Care Quality Commission, and each profile carries the current rating together with the report behind it. Ratings combine five judgements covering safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership, so a provider rated Good overall can still be weaker in the area that matters most to you. Those holding Outstanding have been found to exceed what is expected in at least one of those areas, which is worth reading about properly. Where an agency sits at Requires Improvement, the report will name the problem, and the manager should be able to explain what has changed since the visit.
What separates a good agency from an adequate one
East Sussex covers a lot of ground, so the first practical question is whether an agency genuinely serves your village or street rather than the county in general. Continuity comes next: ask how many different carers would visit in a fortnight and whether rotas are shared before the week starts. Ask what the agency treats as a late call, who telephones when one happens, and which number reaches a real person on a Sunday evening. Where travel between rural addresses is involved, ask how that affects visit times in practice.
Choosing between home care agencies in East Sussex
Requesting a care needs assessment
Any adult who appears to need help at home can ask for a care needs assessment, and there is no charge for it whatever their savings. The assessor talks through an ordinary day rather than a medical history, covering personal care, meals, medication, moving about indoors and coping alone at night. The result is a written record of eligible needs that underpins everything afterwards. Requests go to East Sussex County Council adult social care, and a relative providing regular unpaid help can ask for a carer's assessment of their own.
How the cost is shared
Having eligible needs does not automatically mean the council pays. A financial assessment considers income, savings and capital, and from it comes a decision on whether the council funds the package, shares the cost, or treats the person as a self funder. Those who qualify can take a direct payment and choose their own agency from this listing instead of accepting a commissioned provider. Anyone paying privately is still entitled to information and advice from the council.
Reaching a realistic weekly figure
Visiting care is charged by the hour or by the visit, so the weekly total depends on how often carers come and how long they stay. Minimum call lengths, travel charges and weekend uplifts can separate two apparently similar quotes, so ask for the full rate card in writing. Check the notice needed to cancel or move a visit, and compare any live in quote against the whole cost of several daily calls rather than against an hourly rate.
Frequently asked questions about home care in East Sussex
Which agencies provide home care in East Sussex?
107 home care agencies are registered to work across East Sussex and every one is listed on this page. They include Curant Care, Dinarie, Home Instead, Hand To Hand Care Ltd and Care To You Healthcare Limited, all currently rated Good. Others sit at Requires Improvement, and some newer providers such as Witham Community Care Limited have not yet been rated. Each agency defines its own coverage area, so checking profiles is the only reliable way to see who serves your address.
What should I ask an East Sussex home care agency?
Start by confirming the agency actually covers your address rather than the wider county, because coverage across East Sussex is patchy. Ask how many different carers would visit over a fortnight and whether you receive the rota in advance. Establish what happens when a carer is delayed or unwell, how quickly cover is found, and who answers the telephone outside office hours. Request the full rate card in writing so weekend rates, travel charges and cancellation terms are clear from the outset.
Is home care different from moving into a care home?
Home care brings carers to a person's own address for agreed visits covering personal care, meals, medication and company, while the household carries on as it is. A residential care home provides a room with staff on site day and night, and a nursing home adds registered nurses for needs requiring clinical oversight. Support at home suits situations where the help needed falls into predictable periods and the property remains safe to live in. Once assistance is needed unpredictably or overnight risk rises, residential or nursing care is usually the safer option.
Can East Sussex County Council help pay for home care?
East Sussex County Council can contribute towards home care costs once a care needs assessment has identified eligible needs. A financial assessment then reviews income, savings and capital, and the outcome determines whether the council funds the package in full, shares the cost, or classes the person as a self funder. Anyone eligible can request a direct payment and choose an agency from this listing themselves. Those funding their own care can still approach the council for advice on arranging it.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in East Sussex?
Ask East Sussex County Council adult social care for a care needs assessment, by telephone or through the referral route on its website. The request can be made by the person needing care or, with their consent, by a relative, GP or hospital discharge team. Keeping a brief note beforehand of the times of day that have become difficult gives the assessor something concrete to work from. A relative providing regular unpaid care is entitled to ask for a carer's assessment alongside it.
How soon should we start arranging care at home?
For planned support, allowing a few weeks leaves time to compare agencies, read inspection reports and meet a coordinator before the first visit. Assessments and financial checks both take time, and rural parts of East Sussex can have fewer agencies able to take on new work at the hours you want. Hospital discharges move much faster, so if an admission looks likely it helps to have shortlisted providers already. Keeping two or three options in reserve stops a sudden change forcing a rushed decision.
