- Care Home
Acorn Manor is a residential care home in Bideford supporting younger adults, including people who have a learning disability and people who are autistic. It is somebody's home before it is anything else, and we work to keep that order of priority clear. People have their own rooms arranged as they want them, they have a say in meals and in how the house runs, and support sits underneath ordinary life rather than replacing it. What we provide varies from person to person. Some need help with personal care, medication and daily routines. Some want practical support with cooking, budgeting, shopping and appointments. Some mainly want dependable people nearby while they get on with college, work, volunteering or seeing friends. For the autistic people we support, predictability carries a great deal of weight. We give notice before things change, we keep noise and busyness in shared areas manageable and we learn how each person prefers to be given information. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families across north Devon are welcome to visit.

- Care Home
Coneygar Lodge is a residential care home in Bridport for older people who are finding it hard to manage alone but who do not need nursing care. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and the ordinary business of the day, without taking over the parts somebody can still do themselves. What matters most to us is that this feels like a home rather than a place where people are kept. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they watch and whether they want company or their own quiet room. Nobody is moved along to suit a timetable. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome without appointment, and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. We try to keep links with the town going, because for many of our residents this part of Dorset has been home for most of their lives. We also offer respite stays. These can give a family carer a genuine rest, help somebody regain strength after illness, or let a person see what living here is like before making any lasting decision. Come and see us and ask us anything you want.

- Care Home
Staverton House is a residential care home in Trowbridge for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, and we try to leave people in charge of everything else. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet room with the door closed. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to understand what is behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a problem to be managed. Families usually know a person far better than any assessment does, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Meals are cooked here, we ask people what they actually want to eat and nobody is hurried through a plate. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to visit and look round properly.

- Care Home
Halsdown Nursing Home is in Exmouth, and we provide residential care for older people who need support with daily life and with health needs that have become harder to manage alone. Being in Devon, close to the sea, means a good deal to many of the people who live here, and we make the most of it. Our approach is unhurried. People keep their own routines, spend their time as they wish and keep their own things around them. Some want company and activity, others want a quiet room and the paper, and both are entirely reasonable. Meals matter, and so does the ordinary sociability of the house, so we put real effort into both. We also offer respite stays, whether someone needs care while recovering from illness or a hospital stay, or a family carer needs a genuine break. We plan short stays properly, so someone arrives to a room prepared for them and a team who already know how they like things done. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat that as the baseline rather than the aim. The more telling measure is whether people here seem settled and whether relatives feel able to raise something early rather than waiting until it has become a complaint. Anyone considering us is welcome to visit and see for themselves.

- Care Home
The Old Rectory is a residential care home in Sturminster Newton, caring for older people in a quiet corner of Dorset that many of the people living here have known for years. We aim for the feel of a household rather than an institution, with people keeping their own routines, their own belongings and a genuine say in how the day goes. We support people living with dementia, and that work depends above all on continuity. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what sits behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. Respite stays are available too, whether someone needs care for a short period after illness or a family carer needs a proper break. We plan short stays with the same attention as a permanent move, so nobody arrives feeling temporary. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take that as the standard to hold rather than something to point at. The better test is whether people here seem settled and whether relatives feel able to raise something early. Fountain House on Innox Lane near Bath, run by Dimensions, is a residential care home supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, including younger adults and some older residents. It is a house, run as a home, and the people who live here are involved in how it works. Support is planned one person at a time. Some residents want help with most parts of the day; others need very little practical help but rely on us for structure, encouragement and staff who understand how they communicate and what a difficult day looks like for them. We take our time over that at the start and we listen to the people who know somebody best rather than working from a file. Everyday life covers the ordinary business of a household: cooking, shopping, laundry, keeping your own room how you like it, choosing what to do at the weekend and getting out locally. We support people to do what they can for themselves, even when that takes longer than doing it for them. Our staff are trained in communication and in supporting somebody who is distressed, and we keep the team settled so people are not always adjusting to new faces. Respite stays are available. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Plymouth supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, including younger adults and older people who need help with daily living. The house is run as a household rather than an institution. Everyone has their own room and their own things, and the week is worked out between the people who live here and the staff supporting them: what is cooked, when the shopping is done, who wants to go out and where to. For adults who have often had decisions made on their behalf, that ordinary degree of control is much of the point. Support is built around what each person wants to be able to do. For some that means a job, a college course or a regular volunteering day. For others it is getting out regularly, keeping up with family, managing money with a hand from staff, or learning to do more around the house. Where people have grown older here, needs change and we change with them, adding help with personal care, mobility and health appointments rather than suggesting a move. Consistency counts for a great deal, particularly for autistic people, so we keep staffing as settled as we can. Respite stays are available alongside longer places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit and meet the people who live here.

Court House Residential Home is in Cullompton, providing residential care for older people in a quiet part of Devon. We are not a large setting and have no wish to be, because a smaller home means the team genuinely know the people who live here, their routines, their families and what makes a day go well or badly. We support people living with dementia, and that work depends on continuity above all. Knowing what somebody's day used to look like, keeping as much of it as we can and understanding what lies behind distress rather than simply managing it is what makes the difference between a settled day and a difficult one. Respite stays are available too, whether somebody needs care for a short period after illness or a family carer needs a genuine break. We plan short stays as carefully as a permanent move, so nobody arrives feeling temporary. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. - Care Home
We are a residential care home in Helston, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Our aim is a settled house where help is close at hand without taking over somebody's life. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Where someone needs help with washing, dressing or moving about, we try to give it without hurry and without doing more of the task than is actually needed. Dementia care rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure, so we ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits. That knowledge is worth more than any written plan when somebody is frightened or cannot place where they are. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Being in Cornwall is a plain advantage, and getting out for a walk or a change of view is part of ordinary life here when the weather allows. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Please come and look round before deciding anything.

- Care Home
Hurst House is a residential care home in Swindon supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We work in a deliberately domestic way, because this is a house where people live rather than a unit where care is delivered. Much of what we do comes down to communication. We take time to understand how somebody tells us they are content, bored, unwell or unsettled, and we make sure every member of the team reads those signs the same way. Once that is in place, life can be kept predictable enough for a person to relax, and we can spot early when something is wrong. People here choose how to spend their time, keep their own things around them and take on as much of the ordinary running of a house as they want. Where somebody is working towards more independence, we look for the practical steps and go at their pace. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it and clear about what a rating is, which is a picture of a point in time. What keeps a house like this good is the daily effort of knowing people properly. Respite stays are available too. Please come and visit.

The Homestead is a residential care home in Exmouth for older people, including residents with a physical disability. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here properly. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become hard to manage, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet room with the door closed. Where somebody has a physical disability the right equipment is in place and our staff are trained to help with moving safely and comfortably, without fuss and without taking over more than is needed. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome without appointment, and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out. Summer Cottage is a residential care home in Newton Abbot, Devon, for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. A home for younger adults has to be about building a life rather than winding one down. People here have decades ahead of them, so we talk about work and college, money, cooking, travel, relationships and independence, and we expect people to take on more over time rather than less. We are a house rather than an institution. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. Because we are small, staff genuinely know the people they support. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event. Where somebody is having a hard time, we look first at what is being asked of them rather than treating the person as the difficulty. Devon is on the doorstep and getting out into it is part of the ordinary week here. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Edwardstow Court is a residential care home in Cheltenham. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We support younger adults too, and respite stays are part of what we do. Our attention goes on ordinary comfort and on the parts of the day nobody inspects. Whether the food is worth finishing. How long a bell takes to answer at two in the morning. Whether the person helping you knows anything about you beyond your care plan. Whether anybody notices you have gone quiet for a couple of days. Where a resident communicates differently, whether through sight, hearing or anything else, we settle that properly at the start and everybody uses the same approach consistently. For residents with physical disabilities we plan around what a person can still manage themselves rather than what is fastest for us. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Relatives who visit often notice what we have stopped seeing, and we would rather they said so plainly than be polite about it.

Acorn is a residential care home in South Gloucestershire supporting a mixed group of adults. Some of our residents are older people who need help with the practical parts of the day. Others are adults with a learning disability, autistic adults or people with mental health needs, and many are younger adults who want support to run their own lives. Planning for individuals is what makes that work. One person may want help to wash and dress and then to be left in peace. Another may want staff alongside them cooking, going out locally, getting to an appointment or working through something that has gone wrong. We pay attention to how each person communicates, what they find difficult and what helps them settle, and we build the plan with them and with the people who know them well. For residents with mental health needs a calm, predictable household does more good than anything written down, and we work closely with local services and doctors. Everyday life includes cooking, shopping, keeping your own room as you want it, choosing how to spend the day and getting out locally. Respite stays are available and give family carers a genuine break. Please contact us if you would like to come and look round.

James Burns House provides residential care in Bournemouth for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autism, people with mental health needs and people with physical disabilities. We also take planned respite stays. We treat this as a home first and a care setting second. The people living here have their own rooms, their own routines and a genuine say in how the place runs, and our staff fit around them rather than running everybody to one timetable. Support covers personal care, medicines, meals, money and the practical work of a household, and we stand back wherever somebody can manage without us. The detail is where most of the real work lies. How a person communicates, what makes an environment feel manageable, how much warning they need before something changes, which parts of the day they want to handle alone, and how they want to be helped with a physical disability are all things we learn from the person rather than assume. For residents living with dementia we keep the day familiar and the pace gentle. Respite stays give family carers a proper rest and let people see what we are like before making a longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, and talk to the people who live here.

Antron Manor is a residential care home in Penryn, Cornwall, providing a settled home for older people who have reached the point where living alone has become difficult. We are deliberately straightforward about what we are. This is not a nursing home and not a hospital. It is a place to live, where the parts of the day that have become hard are taken care of and the rest is still yours. Staff are here through the night as well as the day to help with washing, dressing and medication. Meals are cooked on the premises. Laundry gets done. Doctors and district nurses come in when somebody needs them. For most older people that turns out to be exactly the right level of support. It removes the worry and the effort without removing the independence, which is the balance people are usually looking for and rarely offered. Beyond that, residents run their own days. When to get up, what to eat, whether to sit with company or on your own, who visits and how often, all stay with the person. This part of Cornwall is a fine place to grow old in and we help people get out into it. Respite and short stays are available. The Elms Residential Home is in Yeovil, Somerset. We provide residential care for older people who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We are not a nursing home. What we offer is residential care: help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals cooked here, laundry done, and staff on duty through the night as well as the day. Doctors and district nurses come in when clinical care is needed. For a great many older people that turns out to be exactly the right amount of support, because it takes away the effort and the worry without taking away the independence. Dementia care rests on consistency and on knowing the person. A familiar order to the day, the same faces and surroundings that are easy to read will settle somebody more surely than anything else. We take time to learn about a person's working life, family and habits, because that is what explains them to us when words begin to fail. Sight and hearing loss are taken seriously rather than worked around, since somebody who cannot follow what is happening will withdraw. Respite and short stays are available. The Bungalow is a small residential care home in Penzance supporting a mixed group of adults. Some of our residents are older people who need help with daily life; others are adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people with a physical disability or people living with sight or hearing loss, and many are younger adults. Being small is the point. Staff know everybody who lives here properly, and we can plan around individuals instead of running one routine for the house. One person may want help to wash and dress and then to be left in peace. Another may want staff alongside them cooking, going out locally or getting to an appointment. We pay attention to how each person communicates, what they find difficult and what helps them settle. Where somebody needs help to move about safely the right equipment is in place and our staff are trained for it, and where there is sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate and do not move things without saying so. Everyday life includes cooking, shopping, keeping your own room as you want it and getting out into the town. Respite stays are available. Please contact us if you would like to come and see the house.

The Retreat is a residential care home in Gloucester supporting a broad mix of people. We care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, people managing mental health conditions, people living with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss, including younger adults. That range works because our method stays consistent. We take time to learn how somebody communicates, what their day ought to contain and what tends to make a difficult one, and then we build support around that rather than fitting everybody into the same routine. Where a person can take on more for themselves, we make room for it instead of stepping in from habit. Life here belongs to the people who live in it. People get up when they are ready, keep their own things around them and spend their time on what genuinely interests them. Respite stays are available too, for people needing short term support and for families who need a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. The better test is whether people here look at ease. Visitors are welcome.

Roselea is a care home at Slimbridge in Gloucestershire. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, mostly younger adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. The question we ask ourselves about this place is whether the people living here have lives they would recognise as their own. Not whether the building is tidy or the records are in order, though both matter, but whether somebody has friendships, somewhere to go and genuine say over an ordinary week. If everyone's week looks the same, we have got something wrong. So people here are involved in the shopping, the cooking and the decisions about their own rooms and their own time. Being in a village means getting out takes deliberate planning rather than happening by itself, and we plan for it. Communication takes the most effort. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things, and we treat behaviour as information. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us whatever matters to them.

Laburnum Lodge is a residential care home in Plymouth. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Having a mixed group under one roof is something we plan for rather than something that simply happens. A younger adult with a learning disability working towards more independence and an older resident who mainly wants a settled, unhurried day want very different things from a week, and support here is built around the individual rather than around a single house routine. What we provide is residential care. Staff are on duty through the night as well as the day to help with personal care, dressing, medication and meals, while doctors and district nurses come in for clinical needs. For autistic residents and people with a learning disability we pay particular attention to predictability. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and real choice head off far more difficulty than any response after the event. Where somebody is distressed, we look at what is being asked of them rather than treating the person as the problem. For residents with a physical disability, time is what matters most, and we build the day around that. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring to arrange a visit.

We are a residential care home in Shaftesbury, providing a home for older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Our aim is an unhurried house. A good deal of care is spoiled simply by being rushed, so we try to give people the time to wash, dress and eat at their own pace, and to sit with somebody who wants to talk rather than moving straight on to the next task. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody would rather have something different. Dementia care comes down to knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is anxious or cannot place where they are. It is worth a great deal more than any written procedure. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned break can be what allows a relative to keep providing care at home for longer. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come. Please come and see the home for yourself before deciding anything.

We are a residential care home in Thornbury, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need help with daily living but who do not require nursing care. We are not a large place and we do not try to run like one. Residents have their own rooms with their own belongings, get up and go to bed when they choose and decide how they want to spend their days. Meals are cooked here and we pay attention when somebody says they would rather have something else. A great deal of what makes a care home worth living in is small and unglamorous: being helped to wash without being rushed, a hot drink at the time you actually want it, somebody noticing that you have gone quiet and sitting with you for a while. Family and friends are welcome whenever they would like to come. We would always rather a relative told us straight away when something is not right than waited for a formal moment to raise it. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. A planned short break can give a relative who provides care at home the rest they need to carry on, or help somebody regain confidence after an illness. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are considering a home for yourself or someone in your family, do come and look round and ask us anything.

Chestnut Lodge is a residential care home in Ferndown, Dorset, caring for older people. We do one thing and we try to do it properly. Residential care for older people who can no longer manage at home, in a house where the day belongs to the people living in it. Nobody is woken to suit a rota. Meals are unhurried and worth turning up for. Help with washing and dressing is given in a way that protects a person's dignity, which in practice means asking before acting, explaining what we are doing, and leaving people to do for themselves whatever they still can. We also take seriously the parts of the day that are not care tasks at all. Company when it is wanted and solitude when it is not. Visitors welcomed at hours that suit them rather than us. Fresh air and a change of scene when the weather allows. Conversations that have nothing to do with anybody's health. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Cheriton is a residential care home in Dorchester, Dorset. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. Respite stays are part of what we do. We try to run an ordinary household rather than a rota. People wake when they wake, eat when they are hungry, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. There is a tendency in this sector to mistake activity for quality and we work at avoiding it. Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone. A number of our residents have lived in this part of Dorset all their lives and know it far better than we do. A conversation about the town with somebody who has watched it change over eighty years is worth having rather than filling with small talk. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Our own test is whether somebody who has lived here a year still feels at home.

St Anne's Court is a residential care home in Bournemouth. We are home to older people, both for the longer term and for shorter respite stays when a family carer needs a break. Our priorities are plain: food worth eating, warm rooms, laundry that comes back, help without a long wait, and privacy when it is wanted. Residents set their own hours rather than fitting ours, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. We concentrate on the parts of the day nobody inspects. How long a bell takes to answer at two in the morning. Whether the person helping you knows anything about you beyond your care plan. Whether anybody notices you have gone quiet for a couple of days. We accept what was found and there is work still in hand.

Daneswood is a residential care home at Winscombe in Somerset, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults and people with physical disabilities. Most of those living here are younger adults, and respite stays are part of what we do. This is a home rather than a placement, and the difference shows in ordinary decisions. People arrange their own rooms, share properly in the shopping and the meals, and have a hand in how the household runs. Where somebody can do a thing themselves, our job is to make it possible rather than to do it faster on their behalf. What we are really supporting is a life with something in it: a job, a course, a club, somewhere regular to go. Those are the purpose rather than extras, and being in a village means people get known locally on their own terms. We are careful with routine and generous with warning, because for several people here knowing what is happening is what makes a day workable. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change, and we tell them plainly when we cannot.

Broadwindsor House is a residential care home near Beaminster providing care for older people, and we also take planned respite stays. We are not a large place and we do not try to behave like one. Residents here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things ought to be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to fit one routine. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, laundry and getting out and about, but a good deal of what makes a home work is harder to list: knowing who likes company and who wants quiet, noticing when somebody is off colour, and having staff who stay long enough to tell the difference. Meals matter more than people expect. They are one of the few fixed points in a day and they ought to be something to look forward to, so we pay attention to what people actually like rather than what is easiest to produce. Respite stays are genuinely useful. They give family carers a proper rest, and they let somebody see what we are like before making any longer decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly how we are doing, and we act on what they tell us.

We support people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autism, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss, and we also support people with eating disorders. Planned respite stays are available. How a person communicates, what makes an environment feel manageable, how much warning they need before something changes, and how they want to be helped are all things we learn from the person rather than assume. Where somebody is living with an eating disorder, patience and a calm consistent approach at mealtimes matter more than anything else we could offer. The Piers is a residential care home in Bournemouth, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism and adults with physical disabilities. This is a home for people who need support to get on with the life they want, and the household is arranged around the people in it. Support here is individual. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it covers the parts of life that are too easily treated as extras: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having something worth getting up for. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we make a point of giving people the time to do things for themselves even when stepping in would be quicker. Where somebody wants more independence, support is planned to withdraw gradually as they grow into it. Many of the people we support are younger adults, and we are careful not to treat them as a group with a single set of needs. Respite stays are available too, which give a family carer a real break and let somebody try the house before anything permanent is discussed. Kingsmount is a residential home in Paignton for older people who need care and company and can no longer safely manage alone. We are a house rather than an institution, and the day here has the ordinary shape of meals, conversation, fresh air and rest. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with washing and dressing, medication, eating well, moving about safely and simply being about so that somebody notices when a resident is not quite themselves. We support people living with dementia, and we rely on continuity above all: staff who know a person's history and habits, a routine that does not keep changing, and reassurance given as often as it is needed without any suggestion that it has been asked before. Community health professionals are brought in whenever something more clinical is required. Respite stays are available as well. They give family carers a proper break, and they let somebody find out how the home feels before any permanent decision is taken. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, which we treat as a standard to keep rather than a thing to display. Whistley Dene is a care home in Devizes, Wiltshire. We provide residential care for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. This is a house, and it is meant to feel like one. The people living here decide what goes on the shopping list, what gets cooked, how their rooms look and how they spend their time. Some go out to work or to college, some use local groups and facilities, and some prefer a quieter week with a few things they enjoy properly. We do not rank those. Being in a market town has its advantages. Things are within reach, the same faces turn up in the same places, and people here are known locally as individuals rather than as residents of somewhere. Keeping that connection alive does more good than most of what we could organise indoors. The effort goes into communication and predictability. Where somebody does not use speech, we learn how they tell us things. Where the week needs to be steady, we keep it steady and give plenty of notice before anything changes. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families and social workers are welcome to visit and ask us whatever they need to.

We are a residential care home at Underhay in Bristol, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Most of those living here are younger adults, and respite stays are part of what we do. Scale is what defines us. Small enough that everybody is properly known, and small enough that the household can run on its members' terms. Everybody here decides how their own space looks and helps decide what gets cooked. Where somebody wants work or study, that drives the support. What we are really supporting is a life with something in it: a job, a course, a club, somewhere regular to go. Being in a city means those are within reach. Residents have a say in how the place runs, and not only in theory. Where we cannot do what has been asked for, we explain why rather than letting it drift. Dignity in personal care is something we are particular about. Being washed or helped to the lavatory should not cost somebody their self respect. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather state that plainly. Anyone considering this home is welcome to visit unannounced and ask us whatever they want.

Maria Skobtsova House is a residential care home in Plymouth supporting adults living with mental health conditions. This is somewhere people live rather than somewhere they have been sent, and we run the household on that basis. What helps most here is a settled environment, a structure to the week that can be relied upon, and staff who know somebody well enough to notice when things are shifting, often before the person feels able to say so. Support can include help with medication, personal care where it is needed, managing a household, budgeting, getting to appointments and taking part in ordinary life beyond these walls. Where somebody has goals of their own, whether that is work, study, seeing more of their family or managing more of their own affairs, we plan support that steps back as they step forward. Most of the people we support are younger adults, and we are careful not to treat them as a single group with one set of needs. Thorn Park Care Home provides residential care in Plymouth for older people and for younger adults who need support with everyday living. We offer permanent places and shorter respite stays. The help we give covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the practical business of getting through a day when that has become hard to manage alone. Beyond that, what people want from us varies a great deal, so we ask rather than assume. Some people want a full day of company and things to do. Others want to be left in peace with a book and a cup of tea brought through now and then. Both are perfectly reasonable and we treat them as such. Plymouth is where most of the people living here have spent their lives, and keeping those threads going matters. Family and friends are welcome whenever they want to come, and we are glad for people to be taken out for the afternoon or for lunch. Respite stays can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Pine Lodge is a residential care home in the town of Weston super Mare, providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, along with shorter respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution and we put effort into keeping that true. People here get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. There is company and activity for those who want it and no obligation at all for those who would rather have a quiet corner, a book and a view of the weather coming in off the channel. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we hold to a steady routine and familiar staff, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to make sense of. Families are welcome whenever they wish to come, and we would much rather hear a worry early than have it go unsaid. Respite can cover a family holiday or a period of recovery after illness. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Heathcote is a residential care home in Swanage, Dorset, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We try to keep the atmosphere domestic rather than institutional, because that is what most people actually want. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, and we bring in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of the people living here have dementia, and we rely on continuity above all: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that does not keep shifting, food that is recognisable and reassurance given as often as it is needed. We also support residents living with mental health conditions, where a settled environment and staff who notice early changes matter a great deal. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision is taken. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would far rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything we write here, so please visit, speak to the people who live here and ask us whatever matters to you.

Bridgwater Court is a residential care home in Bridgwater, Somerset, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults. Those are the purpose rather than extras attached to it, and they are usually what makes the rest of the week worth organising. We are careful with routine and generous with warning, because for several people here knowing exactly what is happening and who is on shift is what separates an ordinary day from a hard one. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking the people who live here what they would change, and we tell them plainly when we cannot.

Spring House Residential Care Home is a care home in Tavistock, Devon. We provide residential care for older people, and we support people living with dementia and people managing a mental health condition. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it and cautious about it, because that standard is far easier to reach than to hold, and the quickest way to lose it is to start quoting it at people. What gets us there is nothing clever. A settled staff team who know the residents properly rather than in outline. A day that belongs to the people living in it, so that they decide when to get up, what to eat and how much company they want. Rooms that are genuinely somebody's own. Families who feel able to say when something is wrong, and a manager who is on the floor rather than behind a door. For those living with dementia, we work from the person's own history. What they did, who their family are and what their afternoons used to look like usually explains more than any assessment. Please come and visit if you are considering care in this part of Devon. Come unannounced if you would rather.

Knightsbridge Lodge is a residential care home in Cheltenham. We are home to older people, both for the longer term and for shorter respite stays when a family carer needs a rest. Our priorities are plain: food worth eating, warm rooms, laundry that comes back with the right name in it, help that arrives without a long wait, and privacy when privacy is what somebody wants. Residents set their own hours rather than fitting ours, and an afternoon with nothing arranged in it is a perfectly good afternoon. We take real trouble over knowing people. The working life, the family, which chair is theirs, how they take their tea, whether they want the news on. Those details are how somebody stays a person here rather than becoming a resident, and none can be learned from paperwork. We also pay attention to the things easy to let slide: clean spectacles, working hearing aids, a favourite cardigan coming back from the wash. Neglect shows up there first. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Families are welcome to arrive unannounced, and relatives who visit often are the best inspectors we have.

Support planned with each individual and reviewed honestly instead of filed. Communication taken seriously, so that where somebody does not use speech we learn how they tell us things. Routines that hold steady, and changes explained well in advance. Being in a country town means getting out takes deliberate planning rather than happening by itself, and we plan for it. Mayflower House is a residential care home in Plymouth providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people with loss of sight or hearing, and people living with mental health conditions. The place runs at the pace of the people in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult alone, given in a way that leaves somebody their privacy. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the faces familiar. For people with loss of sight or hearing we adapt how we communicate, how rooms are lit and how we approach and announce ourselves, because those small changes decide whether a person is included or left on the edge of things. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than late. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Mulberry House is a residential care home in Bristol supporting adults with a learning disability or autism alongside older people who need residential care. It is a home rather than a placement, and the household is arranged around the people living in it. Support is planned individually. It can include help with personal care, medication, cooking, laundry, managing money and getting to appointments, and it takes in the parts of life that matter just as much: friendships, going out, keeping up an interest, having something worthwhile in the week. We communicate in whatever way suits each person, and we give people the time to do things their own way rather than stepping in for the sake of speed. Where somebody wants more independence, we plan support that draws back as their confidence grows. We support younger adults as well as older residents, and we do not assume that people want the same things simply because they share a roof. Respite stays are available too, giving family carers a real break and letting somebody try the house first. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit, meet the people who live here and see how the household actually works.

The Mowhay is a residential care home near Truro supporting older people, younger adults, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. We know which areas were identified, we have a plan of work under way covering staff training and supervision, our record keeping, and how people and their families are involved in decisions, and we are glad to talk through where we have got to with anyone considering us. The work of the house continues properly meanwhile. Support is built around the individual rather than around a label, agreed with the person and written in a form they can understand. Communication gets particular attention, using speech, signing, symbols or simply familiarity, since that is what allows people to make decisions rather than have them explained afterwards. Arranging and funding a care home place in the South West
The South West covers a broad stretch of England, from the coastal communities of Cornwall and Devon through Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Across this region our directory lists 1,362 residential care homes, ranging from small family-run houses to larger purpose-built settings. If you are beginning to think about a move into residential care, the first practical steps are usually the same wherever you live: understand the level of support needed, find out what funding may be available, and get a realistic sense of local fees before you shortlist homes.
Starting with a care needs assessment
A care needs assessment is the formal way to establish what daily help someone requires, and it is the gateway to any publicly funded support. You can request one through the local authority Adult Social Care team, and the assessment is free regardless of income. A social worker or assessor will look at personal care, mobility, medication, memory, nutrition and social contact, then produce a written summary of eligible needs. This document is useful even for people who expect to pay privately, because it gives care homes a clear starting point when discussing whether they can meet the person's needs.
Funding, means testing and typical costs
After the needs assessment, a separate financial assessment decides how much the local authority will contribute. Savings and capital thresholds apply, and the value of a property is usually included unless a spouse or certain other relatives still live there. Residential fees in the South West vary widely by area and by the type of home, with coastal towns and larger converted properties often sitting at the higher end. It is worth asking each shortlisted home for a written fee schedule that shows what is included and what is charged as an extra, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted trips.
Choosing between care homes in the South West
With more than 1,300 residential settings in the region, filtering the list is the real challenge. Every home in our directory carries a Care Quality Commission status, and across the South West the current sample includes Outstanding ratings such as Firgrove House, Ridgeway House and Harbour Rise Rest Home, a large majority rated Good, a smaller number rated Requires Improvement including Grange Court, Holly Tree Cottage, Chosen Court and Nutley Lodge Care Home, and a handful not yet rated such as Osborne House and St Omer Residential Care Ltd.
Reading CQC reports properly
The overall rating is a useful headline, but the five key questions underneath it tell you far more. Look at whether the home is Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led, and pay particular attention to the date of the last inspection. A home rated Requires Improvement that has since had a positive follow-up visit may be a very different proposition to one where concerns are unresolved. Homes that are not yet rated are often newer registrations, so ask the manager directly about staffing, training and clinical oversight.
What a visit should tell you
Try to visit at different times of day. Look at how staff greet residents by name, whether call bells are answered promptly, and whether communal areas feel lived in rather than staged. Ask to see a sample care plan, the activities programme for the last month, and the most recent menu. Homes such as Cathedral View, Menna House, Courtlands Care Home, Chard Manor and OSJCT Marden Court are examples from our South West listings, but the right choice depends on location, atmosphere and the specific needs of your relative rather than name recognition.
Frequently asked questions about care homes in the South West
How many care homes are there in the South West?
The South West has 1,362 CQC registered care homes: 62 Outstanding, 1,091 Good, 140 Requires improvement, 7 Inadequate, 62 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
How much does a care home cost in the South West?
Self-funders are typically asked £1,400 to £1,650 a week. Middle half of prices from 52 South West homes. Median £1,549. Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price.
Which care homes in the South West were inspected most recently?
The Yelverton Residential Home (30 September 2026), Ladden View (29 September 2026) and Southlands Residential Care Home (28 September 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.
Can the local authority fund a care home placement in the South West?
Yes, the local authority can fund all or part of a residential placement following a needs assessment and a financial assessment. If someone has capital below the upper threshold and eligible needs, the local authority will contribute towards fees, though the person is still expected to pay an assessed contribution from income such as pensions. Where savings and property equity are above the threshold, the person usually pays their own fees until their capital falls to the relevant level. It is worth asking about deferred payment agreements if the main asset is a home that cannot easily be sold.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in the South West?
You can contact the local authority Adult Social Care service directly and request an assessment for yourself or a relative, and referrals can also come through a GP or hospital discharge team. The assessment is free and does not depend on income. An assessor will visit in person or speak by phone and video, and will consider practical daily tasks alongside safety, mental wellbeing and social contact. You will receive a written outcome that can be shared with any care home you approach.
How far in advance should I start looking for a care home in the South West?
Where possible, begin exploring options several months before a move is likely, because the most sought-after homes in the South West often have waiting lists. Starting early also allows time for a proper needs assessment, financial planning and unhurried visits. In urgent situations, for example after a hospital admission, decisions sometimes have to be made within days, and the local authority hospital team can help identify homes with immediate vacancies. Even in a crisis, try to visit at least two homes before committing.
Which providers in the South West offer residential care?
Our directory currently lists 1,362 residential care homes across the South West, spanning Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol. These include small homes such as Breage House, Inglenook House and Katherine House Rest Home, alongside larger settings such as Regency Manor Care Home and Lakeside Care Home. CQC ratings across the sample include Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and not yet rated. You can filter the full list on Care Assura by location, rating and specialism to narrow the choice.
What should I ask when visiting a care home in the South West?
Ask about the staff-to-resident ratio at different times of day, how care plans are reviewed, and what happens if a resident's needs increase. Enquire about the activities on offer, access to gardens or outings, and how the home manages relationships with GPs, district nurses and pharmacists. Check the fee structure carefully and confirm what is included, what counts as an extra, and how future increases are handled. Finally, ask to speak to a relative of a current resident if that is possible.
What is the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home?
A residential care home provides help with personal care such as washing, dressing, meals and medication prompts, along with companionship and activities, but does not have qualified nurses on duty around the clock. A nursing home is registered to provide nursing care, meaning a registered nurse is on shift day and night to manage more complex clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or advanced dementia. All 1,333 homes on this South West page are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing input is likely to be needed soon, it is often better to choose a home already registered to provide it.
