About Summer Cottage

Summer Cottage is a residential care home in Newton Abbot, Devon, for adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. A home for younger adults has to be about building a life rather than winding one down. People here have decades ahead of them, so we talk about work and college, money, cooking, travel, relationships and independence, and we expect people to take on more over time rather than less. We are a house rather than an institution. People have their own rooms and their own belongings, a real say in what gets cooked and what happens at the weekend, and they decide who comes to visit. Because we are small, staff genuinely know the people they support. For autistic residents especially, predictability does most of the work. Routines that hold, clear information, honest notice before anything changes and genuine choice prevent far more distress than any reaction after the event. Where somebody is having a hard time, we look first at what is being asked of them rather than treating the person as the difficulty. Devon is on the doorstep and getting out into it is part of the ordinary week here. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.
