Which care homes are registered in Redcar and Cleveland?

What should we ask when visiting a home here?

Ask how many staff are on duty during the day and overnight, how long the manager has been in post and what staff turnover has been over the past year. Ask how the home supports a resident whose needs increase, and whether that could eventually mean moving on. Ask to see the current week's activity programme and a recent menu rather than a brochure. Then ask exactly what the weekly fee includes and what is billed in addition.

How does a care home differ from a nursing home?

A residential care home provides accommodation, meals and help with personal tasks such as washing, dressing and prompting medication, with care staff present around the clock but no nurses on site. A nursing home offers all of that and additionally employs registered nurses, allowing it to meet clinical needs such as complex wound care, catheter management or support in the final stages of an illness. Everything listed here is registered as a residential care home. Where nursing might be required, the care needs assessment is the place to establish it.

Will Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council pay for a placement?

It may, where a financial assessment shows that income and capital cannot meet the full cost. For a permanent residential placement the value of a property is usually included unless a partner or certain other relatives continue to live there. Any contribution follows the care needs assessment, so that has to be completed first. If a family prefers a home costing more than the council's agreed budget, a third party contribution is normally required.

How is an assessment arranged?
