    • Care Home

Albert House Residential Home is a care home in Colne, Lancashire, providing care for older people, including people living with dementia, along with shorter respite stays. We try to keep the home domestic rather than institutional. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, and pass the day as they choose. Some are in company from breakfast onwards and some would far rather have their own room and the paper, and neither preference draws any comment from us. The care covers help with washing and dressing, prompting and administering medication, meals cooked on the premises, support with mobility, and somebody always about when a person needs them. For those living with dementia we keep the routine steady and the staff familiar, and we arrange the house so that it is easy to understand and move around in. Colne is home for most of the people living here, and we keep those connections going with trips out, visitors from local groups, and family welcome whenever they wish to come. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and you are welcome to visit.

    • Care Home

Belvedere Manor Care Home is a residential care home in Colne, Lancashire. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia and residents with physical disabilities, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Residents here have different histories, different routines and very different ideas of a good day, so we plan support one person at a time rather than running the house on a single timetable. We ask when someone likes to wake, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the afternoon. Help with personal care, meals and medication is given quietly and with respect for privacy, and whatever a resident can still manage for themselves is protected. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure rather than argue when someone is unsettled. For residents with physical disabilities we pay close attention to mobility, to moving safely about the building and to the arrangements that let someone do more without help. Families are welcome whenever they wish to visit and we would far rather hear a concern while it is small. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and we hold ourselves to it in the ordinary details of every day.

    • Care Home

We are Sycamore Rise Residential Care Home in Colne, Lancashire. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, people living with mental health conditions, and younger adults whose needs suit a residential setting. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have gone through the findings properly, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we give relatives the same account of it that we give the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is everyday life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, how sociable you feel today: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history, spotting early what tends to unsettle them and going at their pace rather than the rota's. If you are considering Sycamore Rise for someone, please come and see us and ask about the rating directly. We would rather answer that question fully than have it hanging over the conversation.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Colne

Money tends to be the question families postpone and then find has reshaped the shortlist. A care needs assessment is free, can be requested by anyone and establishes whether residential dementia care is the right level of support. Lancashire County Council is responsible for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it, and a carer living with the person may request a separate assessment of their own needs.

What the financial assessment measures

Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are set against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can delay the sale of a house.

Costs and the help outside the means test

Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care, since the support is personal rather than clinical, and fees in this part of the country sit closer to the national average than in the south. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested and are regularly missed. Where a council contribution is less than a home's private fee, confirm in writing whether a third party payment is expected.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Colne

Favordale Home for Older People, Belvedere Manor Care Home and Albert House Residential Home are each rated Good. Sycamore Rise Residential Care Home currently holds a rating of Requires Improvement. Ask every home how many staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed, since that is where practice diverges most.

Reading the grades properly

Each rating covers whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and the caring and responsive sections speak most directly to how a resident with dementia is treated. Check the date of each report, because an older one describes a team that may since have changed. Where a home sits below Good, ask what has changed and ask to see any action plan.

What to notice on a visit

Watch whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed in the evening. Ask how the home supports a resident who walks frequently and whether the garden is secure and used. Ask too what would happen if needs progressed beyond what the home is registered to provide.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Colne

How many dementia care homes are there in Colne?

Colne has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 5 CQC registered care homes in Colne: 3 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Colne were inspected most recently?

Sycamore Rise Residential Care Home (10 June 2025), Belvedere Manor Care Home (21 December 2019) and Favordale Home for Older People (13 March 2018) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Lancashire County Council fund a dementia care placement?

Lancashire County Council can fund or part fund a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having on record. A deferred payment agreement may be available where most of the capital is held in a property. Where the council rate falls short of a home's fee, ask in writing who would cover the difference.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in Colne?

Ask Lancashire County Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. A carer can also request a separate carer's assessment in their own right.

How far ahead should a family begin looking?

Start early even where a move still feels some way off, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Six to eight weeks allows for repeat visits, a careful read of the reports and a settled funding position. A crisis admission or hospital discharge rarely allows that, so a shortlist held in reserve is worth having. With four homes covering the area, availability may also narrow the choice.

Which homes in Colne provide dementia care?

Four residential care homes covering Colne are registered to support people living with dementia: Favordale Home for Older People, Belvedere Manor Care Home, Sycamore Rise Residential Care Home and Albert House Residential Home. Favordale Home for Older People, Belvedere Manor Care Home and Albert House Residential Home are each rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Sycamore Rise Residential Care Home holds a rating of Requires Improvement. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its grade.

What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Colne?

Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training, how often it is refreshed and how high turnover is, since familiar faces matter a great deal to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported. Where a home holds Requires Improvement, ask what has changed since the inspection.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides residential personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can therefore manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only require nursing later. All four homes listed for Colne are residential rather than nursing.
