    • Care Home

Lowfield House is a residential care home in Clitheroe, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia, those with physical disabilities and those living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available too, planned or at short notice. Most of what makes a care home bearable or good is ordinary detail rather than anything grand. What time you like to get up. Whether you want company at meals or would rather read in peace. Which chair is yours. We help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility, doing it quietly and leaving as much privacy and as much choice with the resident as we can. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, that is theirs to keep. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and surroundings steady, give people time rather than hurrying them, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, since knowing that someone worked in the mills or walked the fells every Sunday tells us a great deal when words become unreliable. For residents living with sight or hearing loss, unhurried communication and a well arranged environment matter more than anything else. Respite bookings are planned as carefully as permanent moves, because a break only rests anybody if the person here is genuinely settled. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary day and ask us whatever you like.

    • Care Home

Clitheroe Care Home is a residential care home in Clitheroe, supporting older people and younger adults from across Lancashire, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. We will deal with the rating first, because you will find it anyway. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to talk around it. Inspectors found things that were not good enough, we accept the findings rather than dispute them, and we are working through what was identified. If you are considering us for somebody you love, ask us directly what was raised and what has changed since, and expect a proper answer rather than reassurance. The purpose of the home is unchanged. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people want to eat. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. A day with enough shape to be worth getting up for, and no obligation to join in with anything. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know each person's preferred way of being helped to move keep a life from shrinking to the size of a chair. With dementia we work on familiar faces and a calm house rather than correction. Come and see the place at a busy time of day, and judge it as it is now.

We tailor the support we provide to each person, recognising that dementia affects everyone differently and that the right approach can make a real difference to quality of life. We are pleased to hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment and consistency of our whole team. It is something we work to maintain every single day, not just at inspection time. We welcome anyone who would like to come and visit us, have a look around and ask questions. We at High Brake House are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the historic market town of Clitheroe, Lancashire, where compassionate support meets the comfort of home. Nestled within the beautiful Ribble Valley, our setting combines the tranquillity of the surrounding countryside with the friendly community spirit that makes this corner of the North West so special. Our home has been thoughtfully arranged to provide a calm, comfortable and homely environment for those who live with us. Residents can enjoy familiar routines in surroundings designed to feel welcoming and safe, with communal spaces that encourage social connection and quieter areas for reflection or private time with visiting loved ones. Being located in the BB postcode area of Clitheroe, we are ideally placed for families across Lancashire to visit regularly and remain closely involved in the lives of their relatives. At the heart of what we do is a genuine commitment to person centred care. We specialise in supporting older people who need residential care, including those living with dementia, and we also welcome younger adults, individuals with physical disabilities, and those with visual or hearing impairments. Every resident is different, and our team takes the time to understand personal histories, preferences, routines and the small details that make each day feel meaningful. For families supporting a loved one through the changes that dementia can bring, we offer patience, consistency and specialist understanding, whilst those with sensory or mobility needs benefit from care that is tailored to help them retain as much independence, dignity and confidence as possible. We also provide respite care, which can be a lifeline for family carers who need a short break, or for individuals recovering after a hospital stay who require a period of supported rest before returning home. Whether the stay is for a few weeks or becomes a longer term arrangement, our approach remains the same: kindness first, always. High Brake House has been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission, with Good ratings across the Safe, Effective, Caring and Well-led domains. This independent recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to safe, thoughtful and well-managed care delivered by a team who genuinely care about the people they support. The CQC also identified Responsive as an area for improvement, and we take such feedback seriously as part of our continued dedication to listening, learning and enhancing the experience of every resident and family we work alongside. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the mixture of emotions that comes with it. If you are exploring options for yourself or a loved one in Clitheroe or the wider Ribble Valley area, we would be delighted to hear from you, answer your questions and welcome you for a visit to see our home for yourself. Whatever the next chapter looks like, we are here to walk it with you, offering care that feels like family.

    • Care Home

We are Abbeyfield Care Home Clitheroe, a residential care home in Clitheroe, Lancashire. We provide a home for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also offer respite stays. Residential care means supporting people with what has become difficult while leaving the rest of life where it belongs, which is with them. Washing and dressing, meals, medication, moving about safely, and the everyday company that makes a day worth having. For health needs beyond our registration we work with district nurses and GPs and we say so plainly rather than stretching to cover them. Where dementia and a sensory impairment sit together, it pays to check the simple explanation first. A good deal of what gets written down as confusion turns out to be a conversation nobody could hear properly. We try to get the environment and the communication right before drawing conclusions about the person. Respite guests are assessed and welcomed exactly as permanent residents are, whether they are recovering from illness or giving a family carer a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

    • Care Home

Castlewood is a residential care home in Clitheroe, set in the Ribble Valley and supporting people from across Lancashire. We care for older people and for younger adults, including residents living with dementia, mental ill health, physical disabilities and visual or hearing impairments. Supporting a mixed group of people well takes more thought than supporting a narrow one, and we think it makes for a better household. Residents are here because of what they need, not because they fit a category. What everyone gets is the same foundation: a warm room of their own, food worth looking forward to, help offered without fuss and staff who take the trouble to know them. For residents with sensory impairments, we adapt how we communicate rather than expecting them to adapt to us. For those living with dementia, we work from life history and routine. For younger residents, we make sure that living in a care home does not mean giving up ambitions, friendships or a say over the ordinary decisions of the day. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places, which gives family carers a genuine break and gives guests a proper welcome rather than a spare bed. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Please come and visit. Seeing the place, meeting residents and asking direct questions will tell you far more than anything written down.

Middleshaw Hills Care Home is near Clitheroe. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and some younger adults. Respite stays are available too. We want the home to feel like a household rather than an institution, which in practice means residents run their own days as far as they are able. People get up when they wake, eat what they actually like, and decide how much time to spend with others. Rooms are personalised from the start, and we encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures because a room that looks like yours settles you far faster. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, things kept where people expect to find them, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. Dementia care rests on familiar staff, a steady rhythm and knowing something of a person's earlier life. Families often supply the detail that explains everything, and we ask for it early. Being in the Ribble Valley, getting out is easy when the weather allows. Please come and visit Middleshaw Hills and ask us anything.

    • Care Home

Middleshaw Hills Care Home is a residential care home in Clitheroe, supporting older people and younger adults from across Lancashire, including people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. We think of ourselves as part of the town rather than a building set apart from it. People who move in have usually lived locally for years, and keeping those threads intact matters more than most brochures admit: the same newspaper, the same church, visitors who can walk round rather than make an expedition of it. Day to day the work is practical. Personal care given calmly and privately. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here and served at a table. Help to move about safely for those who need it, with the right equipment and staff who know how each person prefers to be assisted. Beyond that we try to leave as much as possible in people's own hands, because choosing when to get up, what to wear and how to spend an afternoon is not a small matter when a great deal else has been taken away. Dementia runs through much of what we do. Familiarity and calm work; correction does not. Relatives usually hold the detail that unlocks a difficult hour and we ask for it at the start. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. The most useful thing you can do is turn up, have a cup of tea and talk to the people who live here.

    • Care Home

Ribble Valley Care Home is in Clitheroe, Lancashire. We provide residential care for older people, and for younger adults whose needs are best met in a home of this kind. A good deal of our work is with people living with dementia. Our approach rests on familiarity and patience. The day has a shape without being run to a timetable, surroundings stay recognisable, and we avoid changing things without good reason. We spend time at the start learning about somebody's life, work, family and habits, asking relatives for the small details as well as the medical ones, because those are usually what helps most on a difficult afternoon. We also support residents with physical disabilities, where the right equipment and enough time are what matter. Life here belongs to the people living it. They choose when to get up, what to eat, where to sit and how the day goes. Care is given discreetly and with proper respect for privacy, and we support people to keep doing whatever they still can for themselves. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them. Respite stays are available as well, for family carers who need a planned break and for people needing support after illness or a hospital admission. Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Clitheroe

Getting the needs recorded

A care needs assessment sets out the help required with washing, dressing, eating, mobility and medicines. Where dementia is involved it should go further, capturing how memory loss affects daily life, what triggers distress and what reliably settles it, since that detail determines which homes can realistically meet the need. There is no charge for the assessment and no financial threshold to meet. A relative providing most of the care should ask for a carer assessment at the same time, which often unlocks support that would not otherwise be offered.

How funding is determined

A financial assessment follows, weighing income, savings and capital to establish the contribution expected and whether public money covers the balance. Property is treated differently depending on circumstances, including whether a spouse continues to live there, so that question is worth putting directly rather than assuming an answer. The adult social care team at Lancashire County Council carries out both assessments and can explain what help may be available while an application is under consideration.

Bringing cost into view

Ask each home for a written schedule separating accommodation, personal care, laundry, activities and escorted appointments, with extras marked plainly. Ask specifically whether dementia support attracts any additional charge and how often fees are reviewed. Where a council contribution applies, confirm whether a third party top up is expected and who would be liable.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Clitheroe

Reading the reports with dementia in mind

11 homes appear here, seven rated Good and two without a published rating. Rather than stopping at the label, look inside each report for what inspectors said about people living with dementia: how staff responded to distress, whether choice was offered to those who struggle to express a preference, and how families were involved in decisions. Check the publication date too, since an older report may describe a staff team that has changed completely. Where no rating exists, ask the manager when an inspection is expected.

What a visit should reveal

Watch how a member of staff approaches someone who is confused or repeating a question, because that single exchange says more than any brochure. Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed, and what turnover has been on the unit over the past year. Look at whether the layout helps people orientate themselves and whether there is somewhere safe to walk. Ask what happens in the late afternoon, when agitation is often at its height, and how distress is managed overnight.

Before committing

Ask about trial periods, the notice required on either side, and what the home would do if needs advanced beyond its registration.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Clitheroe

How many dementia care homes are there in Clitheroe?

Clitheroe has 11 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 14 CQC registered care homes in Clitheroe: 7 Good, 1 Requires improvement, 3 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Clitheroe were inspected most recently?

Ribble Valley Care Home (23 February 2026), Clitheroe Care Home (4 November 2025) and Abbeyfield Care Home Clitheroe (14 February 2024) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Lancashire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It may, once both a care needs assessment and a financial assessment have been completed. The needs assessment must establish that residential care is the appropriate form of support rather than help at home. The financial assessment then examines income, savings and capital to set the contribution expected from the person moving in. If a council contribution is agreed, ask in writing whether a third party top up would be sought and who would be liable for it.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in Clitheroe?

Contact the adult social care team at Lancashire County Council and request an assessment of care and support needs. There is no charge and no means test attached to asking, so it is worth doing even where care will be funded privately. Make sure the assessment records how dementia affects daily life, what causes distress and what helps, since that shapes which homes are suitable. If the person is in hospital, the ward team can begin the process before discharge.

How early should a dementia care home search begin?

Starting before a crisis matters particularly where dementia is involved, because a sudden move is harder for someone who depends on familiar surroundings. Six to eight weeks allows room for assessments, several visits and a careful read of the inspection reports. After a hospital admission the timescale is often much shorter, and the council team is the quickest route then. Even a provisional shortlist prepared early means an urgent decision is still an informed one.

Which providers in Clitheroe offer dementia care?

Nine registered residential care homes match this search, each with its own profile on this page. Seven hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and two have not yet been given a published rating. Registration says nothing about current vacancies, so availability has to be confirmed with each home directly. The profiles are the quickest way to shortlist before making calls.

What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Clitheroe?

Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed and what turnover has been on the unit in the past year. Watch how staff respond to someone who is confused or repeating a question, since that interaction reveals more than any tour. Ask how distress is managed, particularly in the late afternoon and overnight, and whether medication is ever used to settle behaviour. It is also worth asking how the building helps people orientate themselves.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals, medicines and mobility, from staff trained to support people living with dementia. A dementia nursing home offers the same alongside a registered nurse on duty, which becomes necessary where there are wounds to dress, a feeding tube, unstable diabetes or complex medication to manage. All the providers listed here are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. If nursing care is needed, the needs assessment should record that and the search should move to nursing provision.
