- Care Home
Hollymount is a residential and dementia care home in Blackburn. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite stays. We judge ourselves by unglamorous measures. How long people wait for help. Whether anybody eats alone who would rather not. Whether the same faces are on shift often enough to notice a change in somebody. Supporting somebody with dementia means keeping things steady and familiar, and knowing their history well enough to follow where their mind has gone. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us requires improvement. We would rather say that here than have somebody find it and wonder what else we omitted. We accept the findings and are working on them. Where somebody has a faith, we make it practical rather than nominal: time, quiet, and help getting to whatever matters to them. We try to keep people connected to the life they had. Post opened when they want it, phone calls made, and trips out arranged where they are wanted. Anybody considering us should come without an appointment, talk to residents and relatives away from staff, and press us for specifics about what has changed and what has not yet.

- Care Home
Hawkhurst is a residential care home in Blackburn supporting older people, including many living with dementia, and adults living with mental health needs. We support some younger residents and we offer respite stays. We run the home as a household. People get up when they are ready, eat what they want and spend the day as they choose. Staff take trouble to learn residents' histories, their families and working lives and what they still care about, because good care depends on knowing a person rather than a set of needs. Dementia care takes up much of our attention. We keep routines familiar, the building calm and the staffing as consistent as we can, and we follow the person rather than correcting them, since correcting someone rarely helps and often distresses them. When a resident is unsettled we look for what lies behind it instead of treating the behaviour as the problem. For residents living with mental health needs we pay attention to early signs that things are shifting and act on them, working with community teams rather than around them, and keeping the person part of the conversation about their own care. Respite guests are part of the household while they are here. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. If you would like to visit, please get in touch and we will arrange it.

- Care Home
Acorn House Care Centre is a residential care home in Blackburn, and we look after older people who need daily support, including those living with dementia. We also take people for respite stays, whether that is a planned break for a family carer or a period of recovery after illness. We are not a nursing home, so what we offer is everyday life properly supported. Our staff help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication, and they do it without rushing anybody. Meals are cooked here and served at sociable hours, with alternatives for people who would rather have something else. Laundry and housekeeping are taken care of, and there are staff awake through the night. When health needs come up we work with the local general practice, district nurses and therapists so that people are seen quickly and, where possible, without leaving the home. Dementia care here rests on familiarity. We keep routines steady, help people find their way around by using the surroundings rather than signs alone, and follow a person's own version of the day rather than arguing with it. Families tell us about the life somebody has led, and that turns out to be some of the most useful information we hold. Relatives and friends are part of the home rather than visitors to be managed. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the place for yourself before you decide anything.

- Care Home
We are a residential care home in Blackburn supporting older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing anxiety, getting out of the house and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits, because knowing the person is what settles them when they are frightened. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round and ask us whatever you need to.

- Care Home
We are Ravenswing Manor Residential Care Home in Blackburn. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment, and we also support younger adults. Respite stays are available. We aim for something domestic rather than institutional. People bring their own furniture and pictures, keep their own habits, and decide for themselves how their day runs. What time you wake, where you eat, whether you want company or would rather sit quietly: those are your decisions and they stay that way. A great deal of what makes a day here good is quite unremarkable, and we would rather describe it plainly than make grand claims. For people living with dementia we work with the person as they are now. Knowing their history, recognising early what tends to unsettle them and having the patience to go at their pace prevents a lot of distress before it begins. Where somebody has a physical disability or a sight or hearing impairment, we give proper attention to access and communication, so those needs do not come to dominate the day. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour, and we would always rather hear a concern early. Please ring us to arrange a visit.

- Care Home
Branch Court Care Home is a residential home in Blackburn for older people, including those living with dementia, residents with a physical disability and some younger adults whose needs suit a home of this kind. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and whatever else has become difficult, and we leave people in charge of the rest. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they spend the day, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the house familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and take time to work out what lies behind a change in mood rather than treating it as a symptom. Where somebody has a physical disability the right equipment is in place and staff are trained to help with moving safely and comfortably, without fuss and without taking over. Meals are cooked here and we ask people what they actually want to eat. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable time, and families are free to stay for a cup of tea or take a relative out for the afternoon. Respite stays are available for family carers needing a break or for somebody regaining strength after illness. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round properly.

- Care Home
Andrews Court Care Home provides residential care in Blackburn for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. We also take planned respite stays. Our aim is that people carry on being themselves here, with the help they need arranged quietly around them. Residents choose when to get up, what to wear, where to sit and who to spend time with, and our staff know those preferences well enough not to have to ask twice. Practically we help with personal care, medicines, meals and all the business of running the place. For residents living with dementia, familiarity does most of the work. The same faces, a recognisable day, and time to do things at the pace somebody can manage. We work with what a person can still do rather than treating a diagnosis as the whole story. Where somebody has a physical disability, we agree together how they want to be helped, which is usually rather different from how a manual would describe it. Respite stays give family carers a genuine break and let people try us without any longer commitment. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. What matters more day to day is what residents and relatives tell us, so we ask them regularly.

- Care Home
Hazeldene is a residential care home in Blackburn supporting older people, including many who are living with dementia, alongside respite guests who stay with us for shorter periods. We try to run the home the way a household runs. People get up in their own time, choose where they sit and what they do, and keep the routines they have had for years wherever we possibly can. Staff spend time learning those routines, because a person who has taken sugar in their tea and read the paper at the same hour for fifty years should not have to give that up on arriving here. Dementia care is a large part of what we do and we approach it patiently. We follow the person rather than correcting them, we keep surroundings calm and familiar, and we notice what settles someone when they are anxious. Families often know these things better than anyone, so we ask and we listen rather than assuming we will work it out ourselves. Respite stays are welcome. They give family carers a proper break and they give the person staying warmth, company and good food for a while. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. If you are looking at care homes around Blackburn, come and visit. Turn up, have a cup of tea, talk to the people who live here and see whether it feels right for your relative.

- Care Home
Mill Lodge Residential Care Home is in Blackburn. We provide care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss, and we offer respite stays. We try to run a household rather than a facility. Residents bring their own furniture and photographs, keep the routines they have always had and decide for themselves how much they want to be part of what is going on. Nobody is walked to an activity they have not chosen. When somebody moves in we take real time over their history and preferences and we write it down so that every member of staff knows it, because care that changes with whoever is on shift is not care we would accept for our own families. Dementia support rests on familiarity and pace. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what settles a particular resident. Supporting mental health needs means patience and working alongside community teams. Where sight or hearing is failing we pay attention to lighting, contrast, signage and sound, and we check that glasses and hearing aids are being used and looked after. Meals are cooked on the premises and residents have a genuine say in the menu. Visitors are welcome through the day. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. - Care Home
Townfield and Coach House is a residential care home in Blackburn, Lancashire. We support older people who need help with daily life, including many living with dementia, and people with physical disabilities. We also offer respite stays. We are a home of a size where everybody is properly known, and that is the basis of everything else. Our team notices when somebody eats less than usual, sleeps badly, seems low or becomes unsteady on their feet, and it is acted on the same day rather than at a review in a month's time. Residents run their own days. When to get up and go to bed, what to eat, whether to sit with others or keep to their own room with their own things around them. Rooms hold people's own furniture and photographs, and nobody comes in without knocking. For residents living with dementia, consistency is what helps most, so we keep staffing settled and learn each person's history properly, which lets us make sense of what they are telling us. Where somebody has a physical disability, we work around what they can still do rather than taking over. Health needs are managed alongside local GPs and community nurses, and families hear from us early when anything changes. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and visit us in Blackburn.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Blackburn
Dementia changes what good care means. Alongside help with washing, dressing, medicines and meals sits the harder work of keeping someone calm, occupied and recognisably themselves as memory recedes. Ten residential care homes in Blackburn are listed here as offering that kind of support, and the differences between them show up less in the building than in how staff respond when a resident is frightened, repetitive or determined to leave.
Reading the Inspection Record
Eight of the ten hold a Good rating, awarded on findings about safety, effectiveness, care, responsiveness and leadership. Linden House Care Home, Ravenswing Manor Residential Care Home, Hazeldene Care Home and Acorn House Care Centre are among those rated Good. Branch Court Care Home and Hollymount Residential and Dementia Care Centre currently carry a Requires Improvement rating, and the report in each case names what inspectors found. That is not a reason to rule a home out on its own, but it does make the questions specific: what has changed since the visit, who is managing the home now, and what has been done about each point raised.
Questions Worth Asking About Dementia Care
Ask how staff are trained in dementia specifically and how recently that training was refreshed. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed in the evening, since the answer separates homes that reach for reassurance from those that reach for a doctor. Ask whether doors are locked, how walking about at night is handled, and how the home learns what a person was like before the illness took hold. Ask what the day actually contains, because occupation matters as much as safety in slowing the loss of confidence. Ask finally how the home keeps families informed between visits, since the people who know someone best are often the first to notice a change.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Blackburn
The Care Needs Assessment
Lancashire County Council is the authority responsible for carrying out a care needs assessment and for arranging funded support where a person is eligible. The assessment is free, open to anyone who appears to need support, and separate from the question of who eventually pays. An assessor will look at memory, risk, mobility, medicines and daily routine, then record what level of support would meet those needs. A relative providing care can request an assessment of their own situation at the same time, which with dementia is rarely a formality. Describe a typical week plainly, including the nights, because an understated account tends to produce an understated outcome.
Fees and Funded Support
A financial assessment considers savings, income and, for most permanent placements, the value of a property. Those above the threshold pay the fee the home quotes, while those below receive a contribution at a rate the council sets. Fees vary between the homes on this page and reflect room size, the level of care agreed and what is included beyond meals and accommodation. Ask what falls outside the weekly figure, and ask what happens if needs increase to the point where nursing input becomes necessary, because that question arises more often with dementia than families expect.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Blackburn
How many dementia care homes are there in Blackburn?
Blackburn has 10 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 31 CQC registered care homes in Blackburn: 8 Good, 2 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Blackburn were inspected most recently?
Andrews Court Care Home (26 May 2026), Branch Court Care Home (1 May 2025) and Hollymount Residential and Dementia Care Centre (20 January 2023) have the most recent CQC reports.
Which providers in Blackburn offer dementia care?
Ten residential care homes match this search, among them Linden House Care Home, Ravenswing Manor Residential Care Home, Hazeldene Care Home, Andrews Court Care Home and Mill Lodge Residential Care Home. All are registered with the Care Quality Commission, with eight rated Good and two rated Requires Improvement. Each has its own profile on this page setting out the inspection history. Vacancies in dementia units move quickly, so approach more than one home at a time.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Blackburn?
Ask how staff are trained in dementia and how often that training is refreshed. Ask what happens when a resident is distressed or wants to leave, and listen for an answer about reassurance and occupation rather than restriction. Ask how the home learns about a person's life before the illness and how that shapes their day. Ask to see the most recent Care Quality Commission report and let the manager account for anything inspectors raised.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home provides personal care from trained care staff, covering washing, dressing, medicines, meals and the support needed to manage confusion and distress. A dementia nursing home offers the same alongside a registered nurse on site at all hours, which is needed where there are wounds to dress, swallowing difficulties or other clinical needs. Every provider matching this search in Blackburn is registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. Because dementia is progressive, ask each home what it can continue to manage and at what point a further move would be required.
Can Lancashire County Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where a needs assessment shows residential care is appropriate and a financial assessment shows the person qualifies for support. Savings, income and usually the value of a property are all taken into account. Where the council contributes it will have a view on which homes it can place into and at what weekly rate. It is also worth asking about continuing healthcare funding, which is assessed separately by the health service where needs are primarily clinical.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Blackburn?
Contact Lancashire County Council and ask for an adult social care assessment, which the person needing care or someone acting for them can request. There is no charge and no need to establish beforehand whether funded support would follow. A carer can ask for a separate assessment of their own needs at the same time, which matters greatly where dementia is involved. Keep a record of dates and names, since arrangements made around a hospital discharge can move very quickly.
How far in advance should I start looking for dementia care in Blackburn?
Earlier than feels necessary, because dementia rarely gives much warning before a situation stops being safe. Two or three months of lead time allows for an assessment, for visits at different hours, and for a trial stay where a home offers one. Places in well regarded dementia units are not always available at the moment you need them. Even when nothing is urgent, reading the inspection reports now means a later decision can be taken calmly.
