    • Care Home

The Mill House is a residential care home in Skipton, North Yorkshire. We support older adults and younger adults, including many people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. A care home should feel like somewhere a person lives, not somewhere they have been placed. People here keep their own belongings around them, get up and go to bed when it suits them, choose how sociable a given day is going to be, and have visitors at the hours that work for everybody. Help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and appointments is offered without fuss and without taking over anything that is still managed perfectly well alone. For those living with dementia, the things that help most are unglamorous. A calm setting, a day with a dependable shape, unhurried staff, and people who know somebody's history well enough to follow what they mean. We gather that history from families early on and treat it as essential rather than as background. Skipton is part of how we run. Getting out into the town, keeping up with the people somebody has always known, and holding on to long standing interests all matter. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange a visit and come and see for yourself.

    • Care Home

Carleton Court Residential Home is in Skipton, North Yorkshire, and we provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, for adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, and for younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mix of people under one roof means paying real attention to what each person wants from the day. Some residents like company and plenty going on. Others want quiet and predictability, and to be left in peace until they choose otherwise. For autistic people especially, that predictability is a need rather than a preference, so changes are explained in advance, staffing is kept consistent where we can, and sensory comfort is taken seriously. We help with personal care, dressing, medication, meals and mobility, and we do it in a way that supports independence rather than quietly replacing it. Where somebody can still manage a task themselves, they do. Dementia care is a significant part of our work. We keep the daily rhythm and surroundings steady, give people time to find their words, and take trouble to learn about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did and what they loved tells us a great deal once language becomes unreliable. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary day, meet the people who live and work here, and take your time over the decision.

    • Care Home

Gills Top is a residential care home in Skipton. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia, along with respite and short stays. We are a small home in the Dales and that shapes what we are good at. Everybody knows everybody. Staff know who is up early, who wants a late breakfast, who likes company and who would sooner be left alone with the radio. Most residents also have local roots going back a long way, and we put effort into keeping those connections alive rather than letting the home become an island. When somebody moves in we take time over their history and preferences and we write it down so that every member of staff knows it. Dementia support rests on familiarity and pace, so we keep staffing as consistent as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what settles a particular resident, since that is rarely the same twice. Families often find this stage harder than the person living through it, and we make time for them too, with honest information rather than comfortable reassurance. Meals are cooked here and residents have a say in the menu. Visitors are welcome through the day and can stay for a meal. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see the home for yourself.

    • Care Home

Ashfield in Skipton is a residential care home providing care for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia. We are a home rather than an institution, and we run the place accordingly. People keep their own routines as far as possible, have their own room and their own belongings, and are supported to carry on doing whatever they still manage for themselves. Doing things for people who do not need it is one of the quickest ways to take away confidence, and we try hard to avoid it. Staff help with washing and dressing, with moving about safely, with medication and with meals and drinks. For those living with dementia we keep the day predictable and the surroundings familiar, adjust how we communicate rather than expecting the person to adjust to us, and pay attention to what somebody is telling us when words are no longer reliable. Meals are cooked here with a genuine choice. There is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not, and visitors are welcome. Respite and short stays can be arranged. If you would like to look round, please telephone us and we will arrange a time that suits you.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Skipton

When four homes share one rating

Agreement among inspectors is reassuring and unhelpful in equal measure. Carleton Court Residential Home Limited, The Mill House, Ashfield (Skipton) and Gills Top all hold Good ratings, so nothing in the headline judgement separates them. The reports underneath do, because they describe different things in each case: how settled the staff team is, how people actually spend their days, how medicines are managed, and how the home responds when something goes wrong. For dementia in particular, look for what inspectors said about staff understanding of distress and about how care plans reflect the individual. It is also worth confirming precisely who each home is registered to support, since a short listing can gather homes with different purposes.

What a visit reveals

The most useful minutes of any visit are the ones where nobody is showing you anything. Watch how staff respond when a resident becomes unsettled, looking for calm voices, no hurrying, and a familiarity with the person's name and history. Ask what dementia training the team receives and how often it is refreshed, how life history and preferences are recorded and who reads them, and what happens when someone declines personal care or will not eat. Check whether bedroom doors, bathrooms and corridors are easy to tell apart and whether there is a safe place to walk. Ask how families are contacted when something changes.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Skipton

Starting with the assessment

A care needs assessment sets down how far dementia has affected memory, orientation, personal care, mobility, eating and safety, and that record is what shows which homes could meet the need. A request to North Yorkshire Council begins it, and the council is also the body that agrees funded support once a financial assessment has looked at capital and income. The right to an assessment does not depend on means, so it is worth asking for even where someone expects to pay for themselves. A relative providing unpaid care can request a carer's assessment in their own right.

What a placement costs

Fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals and personal care, with the rate reflecting the room and how much support is needed day and night. Where eligible needs are confirmed, the financial assessment fixes the personal contribution and the council meets the balance where that duty is its own. Private funders should get the weekly rate in writing and ask what is billed separately, commonly hairdressing, chiropody and transport. Check how often fees are reviewed and what notice of an increase is given.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Skipton

How many dementia care homes are there in Skipton?

Skipton has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 6 CQC registered care homes in Skipton: 4 Good. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Skipton were inspected most recently?

Carleton Court Residential Home Limited (16 February 2023), Ashfield (Skipton) (4 March 2020) and Gills Top (15 February 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which providers in Skipton offer dementia care?

Four residential care homes are listed for Skipton: Carleton Court Residential Home Limited, The Mill House, Ashfield (Skipton) and Gills Top. All four are registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide accommodation together with personal care, and all four currently hold a Good rating. Registration describes what a home may provide rather than whether a room is free, so availability has to be checked with each one. The profiles on this site carry the inspection history behind each rating.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides a permanent room, meals and personal care, with staff supporting washing, dressing, eating, medication and daily routine. A dementia nursing home holds the additional registration needed to employ qualified nurses on the premises, which matters where there are pressure wounds, swallowing difficulties, unstable medical conditions or complex medication. All four providers listed for Skipton are residential care homes rather than nursing homes. As dementia usually progresses, ask each home at the outset how far it can continue to support someone before a move would become necessary.

What should I ask on a visit to a dementia care home in Skipton?

Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed, how settled the permanent team is and how much agency cover is used at night. Ask to see the activity record for the past fortnight rather than a general description, and ask how residents who are restless or withdrawn are included. Work through the weekly fee, what falls outside it, how often it is reviewed and what changes if needs increase. Ask as well to read the most recent Care Quality Commission report and what the home has altered since.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Skipton?

Ask the adult social care team at North Yorkshire Council for a care needs assessment for the person with dementia. Anyone who appears to need care and support is entitled to one whatever their finances, and a relative giving unpaid care can request a separate carer's assessment. The assessor will consider memory and orientation, personal care, mobility, nutrition, medication and the risks of staying at home. Memory clinic letters or a recent diagnosis help the assessor form an accurate picture.

Can North Yorkshire Council fund a dementia care home placement in Skipton?

It can contribute once the care needs assessment has found that the needs meet national eligibility criteria and a financial assessment has established what the person should pay. North Yorkshire Council then meets the remainder where the responsibility rests with it. Where someone has substantial ongoing health needs, it is worth asking whether NHS continuing healthcare should be assessed, since that is funded by a different route. Anyone with capital above the threshold arranges and pays for a placement themselves.

How far ahead should I start looking for dementia care in Skipton?

Start once it becomes clear that support at home is nearing its limit, which in practice means two to three months before a move. That window covers the assessment, the financial assessment, visits and an unhurried handover of medication and routine. Where every home is well rated, availability rather than quality tends to be the binding constraint, so early enquiries about vacancies matter. If a placement follows a fall or a hospital discharge, decisions compress into days and the realistic choice narrows accordingly.
