About Us
Here at The Orchards, we are a residential care home nestled in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and we take real pride in the community we have built here. We support older adults across a range of needs, including residential care, dementia care and respite care, and we work hard to make sure every person who comes through our doors feels genuinely at home.
We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can face, and we do not take that lightly. From the very first conversation, we try to make the process as straightforward and reassuring as possible. We take time to get to know each resident properly, understanding their routines, preferences and the things that matter most to them, because good care is built on relationships, not just routines.
For those living with dementia, we are mindful of how important familiarity and a calm environment can be. Our approach is thoughtful and person centred, focusing on dignity and meaningful connection every single day.
We also offer respite care for those who need a short stay, whether that is to recover after a hospital admission or to give a family carer some time to rest. We want respite stays to feel as comfortable and settled as a longer term arrangement, so we put just as much care into welcoming short stay residents.
We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and while that recognition matters to us, what matters more is that the people in our care and their families feel confident and well supported.
If you would like to find out more or come and have a look around, we would love to hear from you. The Orchards is more than a care home to us. It is a place people call home.

More about the care at The Orchards Residential Care Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Staffing levels and the pace of a morning decide most of what daily life actually feels like in a care home. The work is washing and dressing without rushing, medication given accurately, meals that people want, and company in the long middle of the day. The Orchards Residential Care Home is registered for older person care, with weekly fees in the East commonly between £1000 and £1350 while Norfolk pays about £750 to £900 for placements it funds. A top up often fills that gap, so establish early who would pay it. Ask how much say residents have over bedtimes and baths, and how many staff are awake overnight.
Dementia
A building that makes sense is itself a form of treatment for somebody with dementia: short routes, visible lavatories, a garden that can be reached without asking. Add consistent staff and meals at the same hours, and much of the day stops being frightening. Distress has causes worth hunting for, usually pain, noise or needing the lavatory, rather than anything to be medicated away. The Orchards Residential Care Home is registered for dementia care, so ask how staff respond when a resident tries to leave or no longer recognises a relative. Ask whether somebody can stay as dementia advances, and how relatives hear about gradual changes.
Respite Care
Treat a short stay as both a break and an experiment, since it gives a carer rest and a family information at the same time. Most homes want a minimum of one or two weeks, and the obvious weeks go early, so book well ahead. Pack labelled clothing and medication in its original packaging, and ask what a room at The Orchards Residential Care Home already provides.
Residential Care
Meals, laundry, personal care and company are the substance of residential care, and none of it involves clinical treatment. Where a nursing home employs registered nurses on site, a residential home calls in district nurses and GPs exactly as any household would. The Orchards Residential Care Home in Great Yarmouth is registered for residential care, and the Care Quality Commission rated it good overall following an inspection in April 2020. That report is some years old, so ask what has changed since and whether a further inspection is due. Ask what the weekly fee covers, which extras are charged separately, and what would happen if a resident later needed nursing.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

No. The Orchards Residential Care Home is registered for older people. Younger adults are not listed. Source: CQC register
Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
