Families looking for nursing care will find sixty registered homes in Suffolk gathered here, each one able to provide personal care with a qualified nurse on the premises day and night. Arranging and funding nursing care in Suffolk
Where a placement begins
Very few nursing placements start with a telephone call to a home. They start with a care needs assessment, which is free, open to anyone who appears to need care and unrelated to savings. It records what a person can do unaided, what has become unsafe, and which tasks require a trained nurse, and it is that document which determines whether nursing rather than residential care is the right route. Assessments can be requested from Suffolk County Council Adult Social Care, which is responsible for assessing need and for arranging funded care where someone qualifies.
When care follows a hospital stay
A great many placements are arranged from a ward rather than from home, and the pace can feel unreasonable. Ask the discharge team to confirm what has been assessed and whether a continuing healthcare checklist has been completed, because that route is funded by the health service and is not means tested. Ask for the decision in writing. If a place is offered as temporary while assessments finish, establish whether it is genuinely temporary and what happens at the end of it.
The cost picture
Fees in a nursing home exceed those in a residential home, since registered nurses staff every shift. Where the health service does not fund the placement outright, a contribution towards the nursing element is usually paid directly to the home, and the remainder is means tested against income and capital. Ask each home for its current weekly rate in writing, what lies outside it, how often it changes and what is charged if a resident spends time in hospital.

Making the grades work for you
Seven homes on this list hold an Outstanding rating, among them Stowlangtoft Hall Nursing Home, Brandon Park Residential and Nursing Home and Cleves Place, and thirty five more are rated Good. Twelve require improvement and one is rated Inadequate. Sort by grade to build a shortlist, then abandon the shortcut and read the reports, because inspectors describe exactly what they saw. A home judged well led with a shortfall in paperwork is in a different position from one where residents were not treated with dignity.
What a visit should establish
Ask how many registered nurses are on duty at night, not just by day, and what the ratio of staff to residents looks like on an ordinary shift. Ask how long the current manager has been in post and how much of the nursing team has been there beyond a year. Put the clinical need squarely on the table and ask how it would be managed, who would be responsible and what happens when that person is off. Watch how quickly call bells are answered while you are there.

Ask for the contract in advance and read the sections on fee increases, notice and what happens if needs rise beyond what the home can meet. Expect a pre admission assessment by the home and use it to ask your own questions.
