Nursing Homes in Hertfordshire 78 nursing homes · 46 rated Good by CQC

Nursing homes in Hertfordshire are what a family turns to once ordinary help at home has stopped being enough and clinical care is needed day and night, and this listing is where that comparison can begin. Eighty one providers are gathered here, each registered to deliver nursing care with a qualified nurse on duty at all hours. The inspection outcomes deserve a careful eye. Six homes hold an Outstanding rating, forty two are rated Good, twenty two currently sit at Requires Improvement and eleven have yet to be rated by the Care Quality Commission. Hertfordshire County Council is the body responsible for the care needs assessment that establishes what support is required, and for the financial assessment that decides what help towards the fees is available. Given how much the results differ from home to home, no shortlist should be built on ratings alone. Open the profiles that interest you, read the inspection reports properly, and let what inspectors actually found lead you to a decision.

We are Heath Lodge in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. We provide both residential and nursing care for older people, including those living with dementia and people living with mental health conditions, and we also support younger adults with nursing needs. Respite stays are available. Because we offer residential and nursing care together, people do not have to move on when their health needs increase. Families are often anxious about exactly that, and it is why we work at keeping our nursing team stable rather than relying on a constant stream of agency cover. Nursing settings can easily feel clinical, so we push against it. People get up when they want, eat what they like, sit where they choose and keep their own furniture, pictures and habits. We ask about the details of a life, the work someone did, the music they like, the hour they prefer to be left in peace, and we write those things into how we work so they survive a change of shift. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail: knowing a person's history, recognising early what unsettles them, going at their pace rather than the timetable's. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Relatives are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

    • Nursing Home

Oakview Lodge is a nursing home in Welwyn Garden City. We care for older people who need qualified nursing support alongside daily care, including many people living with dementia, and we also support younger adults with nursing needs. Having nurses here means that health needs can be met without somebody having to move again, and it means families can hand over the exhausting business of coordinating care and go back to simply being family. Around that, we try to keep life ordinary. People choose when to get up, what to eat and how to spend the day, and we would rather fit our routine round them than the reverse. Respite stays are available too, for families needing a break or for someone recovering after time in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to talk around that. We know which parts of our work were not good enough, and we are dealing with them with our team rather than waiting to be inspected again. If you are considering us, please ask about it directly, and ask to see what has actually changed. We would far rather have that conversation than have you find out later. You are welcome to visit at any reasonable time and see the home as it really is, and to speak to the people who live here and their relatives.

Our home has been thoughtfully designed to support older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia or physical disabilities, providing a place where residents can feel truly at home. Nestled within the HP postcode area, our setting benefits from the calm and community spirit that Hemel Hempstead offers, whilst remaining well connected for visiting family and friends. The surroundings provide a peaceful backdrop for daily life, allowing residents to enjoy comfortable, homely spaces where they can relax, socialise, or spend quiet time as they wish. Our specialisms reflect the breadth of care needs we are able to meet. For older people requiring nursing support, our qualified team provides skilled clinical care around the clock, ensuring that health needs are closely monitored and managed with dignity. For those living with dementia, we take time to understand each individual's history, preferences, and routines, creating a familiar and reassuring environment that supports wellbeing and reduces anxiety. We also welcome younger adults and residents with physical disabilities, tailoring our approach so that independence, choice, and personal goals remain at the heart of everyday life. Families looking for respite care will find a warm and flexible welcome here, whether the stay is planned in advance or arranged to support a period of recovery or a carer's break. In practice, this means residents and their loved ones can expect care that is genuinely person centred. We take the time to get to know each resident as an individual, listening carefully to families and working in partnership with them so that care plans reflect real preferences and evolving needs. Whether it is support with personal care, assistance with mobility, help managing complex health conditions, or simply the reassurance of a friendly face nearby, our team is committed to being present, patient, and kind. The Care Quality Commission has rated Lime Tree Manor Nursing and Residential Home as Good overall, with Good ratings across all five key areas of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led, following their inspection in March 2022. For families, this independent assurance offers meaningful peace of mind, reflecting a home where safety, leadership, and the quality of care are all recognised as meeting the standards expected by the regulator. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand the care and thought that goes into it. If you are exploring options for a loved one in Hemel Hempstead or the wider Hertfordshire area, we warmly invite you to get in touch or arrange a visit. We would be delighted to answer your questions, show you around, and help you decide whether Lime Tree Manor could be the right next chapter for your family.

    • Nursing Home

Burford House Care Home is a nursing home in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, providing nursing and personal care for older people and for younger adults whose health needs go beyond what can reasonably be managed at home. We care for residents living with dementia, residents with physical disabilities and residents with visual or hearing impairment, and we offer respite stays for shorter periods. Having qualified nurses in the team means a resident whose health becomes complex or changeable does not have to move on again. We work closely with doctors, district nurses and therapists when someone's condition alters, and clinical care is given with the same attention to privacy and dignity as every other part of the day. Dementia care shapes much of what we do. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious instead of correcting them. For residents with sensory loss we adapt how we communicate and how rooms and shared spaces are arranged, so that nobody is quietly left out of a conversation or an activity. We do not yet hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are regulated by them and are building the care planning, records and oversight that a good inspection outcome requires. Anyone considering Burford House is welcome to visit and see the home on an ordinary day.

Anson Court is a nursing home in Welwyn Garden City. We care for older people needing nursing support, people living with dementia, people living with mental ill health, adults with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and some younger adults. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Registered nurses are here throughout the day and night, which means clinical needs can be met without a person being moved on every time their health changes. Long term conditions, wound care, medication that needs careful management and the gradual increase in need that comes with frailty are all handled here, in surroundings the person knows, by people who know them. We think nursing care is only half the job. The other half is a life worth getting up for. Residents choose their routines, their rooms are their own, and we would far rather someone spent the morning reading the paper in peace than joined in something for the sake of it. Where dementia or mental ill health is part of the picture, we keep the environment calm and consistent and we take time to understand what someone is communicating when words are difficult. Distress almost always has a reason, and finding it beats managing the symptom. Respite stays suit people who need nursing input for a short period or whose family carer needs a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please visit Anson Court, meet the team and ask us anything you want to know.

We are Premier Court Care Home, a nursing home in Bishops Stortford. We care for older people and younger adults who need qualified nursing alongside support with daily living, including people living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we would rather tell you that ourselves than have you find it elsewhere. We have worked through the findings in detail, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the way we supervise and support our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and relatives are given the same account of it that we give the regulator. That is a wide range of needs under one roof, and it only works if we plan around individuals rather than by category. Nurses on duty at all hours mean health needs can be managed as they change, and around that people should still be choosing when to get up, what to eat and how to spend the day. If you are considering us, please visit and ask about the rating directly. We will answer fully.

We are Elton House, a nursing home in Watford. We care for older people and for younger adults with nursing needs, including many people living with dementia, people with a physical disability, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Having qualified nurses on duty at every hour is what allows us to look after people whose health is complicated or liable to change. Problems are noticed early by staff who know the person, treatment starts without waiting for an outside visit, and families are not left wondering about overnight cover. The nursing side is essential but it is not the purpose of the place. People live here, and we work at making that a proper life. Rooms are personalised, people get up and settle when they choose, and meals are something to look forward to. Our staff take time to learn who somebody was before they needed care. For those living with dementia we work patiently and with the person's history in view. We do not correct or reorient. Where a person has a visual or hearing impairment, we make sure every member of staff knows how they prefer to be approached. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

Knebworth Care Home is a nursing home in Knebworth, Hertfordshire, caring for people who need qualified nursing support alongside help with daily living. We care for older people and younger adults, support residents living with dementia or a mental health condition, look after people with a physical disability, and offer respite stays for shorter periods. Having nurses on site means health needs can be met here as they change, so people do not have to move on at the point when familiar surroundings matter most. We manage long term conditions, provide wound and continence care, and offer end of life care with dignity and as little disruption as possible. Alongside the nursing, we work hard to keep daily life ordinary. Residents decide when to get up, where to spend their time, what they eat and how much company they want. Meals are cooked on the premises and preferences are remembered. Our staff take time to learn what settles a particular resident and what unsettles them, which matters greatly for anyone living with dementia or managing a mental health condition. We work closely with GPs, community mental health teams and other professionals, and we keep families closely informed, particularly when health needs change. The Care Quality Commission most recently rated us good overall. Please contact us if you would like to visit.

Wymondley is a nursing and residential care home in Hitchin. We care for older people who need qualified nursing alongside help with daily living, for residents living with dementia and for people whose physical disability means they need skilled support to stay comfortable. Offering both residential and nursing care matters more than it might sound. It means that when somebody's health changes we can adjust what we provide rather than asking them to move again, and continuity of that kind is one of the things families tell us they value most. Nurses on duty around the clock let us manage wound and pressure care, continence needs, diabetes, pain relief and end of life care properly, working alongside GPs and district nursing teams. For residents living with dementia we keep the day predictable and the staff around them consistent, and we ask families to share the history that helps us make sense of somebody on a difficult afternoon. Respite stays are available, whether for a planned break for a family carer or for support after a hospital discharge. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are a nursing home in Royston, Hertfordshire, and we support a wide range of people. That includes older people living with dementia, adults with mental health needs, people with physical disabilities or sight and hearing loss, and younger adults whose conditions call for nursing care. We also offer respite stays for people who need a short period of support, or whose regular carer at home needs a rest. Because the people we look after arrive with such different needs, we start from the person rather than the diagnosis. Someone living with dementia may need calm routines and familiar surroundings. A younger adult may want the practical help that lets them get on with their own plans. Someone whose sight or hearing has faded may simply need us to change how we approach them and how we set out a room. Getting that right is much of the job, and we ask families to tell us what they know, because they usually know a great deal. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to dress that up. There is work under way in response to the findings, and if you are considering us for someone you love, ask us about it directly and we will tell you what has changed and what is still in hand. Visitors are welcome and we would far rather you came and looked round than relied on a description. Please contact us to arrange a time.

Cooperscroft Care Home is a nursing home in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. We care for older people and for younger adults whose health needs mean that qualified nursing support should be available at any hour. Many of the people who live here have dementia, often alongside physical illness or reduced mobility, and a number have sight or hearing loss. Caring well in those circumstances takes both clinical skill and close attention to the person. We watch for pain that cannot easily be described, we keep the surroundings calm and easy to make sense of, and we adapt how we communicate as needs change rather than assuming that what worked last year still works now. We plan care with residents and their families. Sleep, food, privacy, company and the ordinary shape of the day are part of that plan, not afterthoughts to the clinical side. We work closely with GPs, community teams and hospital specialists so that treatment happens quickly and, where possible, without anyone having to move. Respite stays are available for families needing a break and for people who need nursing support for a short period. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us outstanding. We are proud of it, and we know it reflects the daily work of the team rather than anything else. If you are looking at nursing care, please come and see us and judge for yourself.

Bentley House in Hertford is a nursing home caring for older people and younger adults who need qualified nursing support, including residents living with dementia, residents with a physical disability and residents with a visual or hearing impairment. Having nurses here at every hour of the day and night means clinical needs are met promptly and quietly, and that people can stay with us as their health changes rather than facing another move. We keep a close watch on medication, pain relief, skin care and nutrition, and we involve GPs and community teams early rather than late. The rest of the day belongs to our residents. Mornings are flexible, meals are cooked on the premises and adapted to individual tastes, and support with personal care follows the resident's pace rather than the rota's. We take time to learn about each person's working life, family, faith and habits, because that knowledge tells us far more about how to care for someone than a list of diagnoses ever could. Families are welcome throughout the day and we encourage relatives to stay involved in decisions. We also offer respite care, often used after a hospital stay or to give a family carer a break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good.

Pinelodge is a nursing home in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. We care for adults who need registered nursing alongside help with daily living, including older people, people living with dementia and younger adults whose health needs call for a nurse on duty at any hour. Nursing cover is what allows us to look after people whose needs are genuinely complex. It means managing medication, skin and pressure care, continence and nutrition, and keeping a steady eye on health so that changes are picked up early rather than becoming emergencies. Where someone is nearing the end of their life, it means we can keep them comfortable in familiar surroundings with people who know them, rather than moving them on. Clinical care is only half of it. It is easy for a nursing home to become a place where everything is done to people and nothing is decided by them, and we work against that. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, whether they join in and who visits. For people living with dementia we keep the day in a familiar order, keep the staff group as consistent as we can, and take time to learn about a person's earlier life, because it explains a great deal about how they are now. Respite and short stays are available, including after hospital. Please ring us to arrange a visit to Pinelodge.

This consistent rating gives families confidence that the standards of safety, leadership, and compassion they expect are being met throughout the home. Choosing a nursing home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we understand that it often follows a period of worry and uncertainty. We warmly invite you to get in touch, arrange a visit, and see for yourself the care and community we have built at Potters Grange. Our door is always open, and we would be honoured to help you take the next step with confidence.

We are Stagenhoe Park, a nursing home near Hitchin, Hertfordshire. We care for older people and younger adults who need qualified nursing alongside support with daily living, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Respite stays are available. Nurses on duty at every hour are what allow us to look after health needs as they change. Medication, wound care, continence, pain and the increasing frailty that often comes with great age can all be managed here, so nobody has to move again simply because their needs have grown. Alongside the nursing we work to keep ordinary life going. People get up when they want, eat what they like, choose where to sit and keep their own belongings and habits. Being out in the country, we make good use of the grounds and the garden. We take the trouble to learn a person's history and preferences, because staff who know somebody well are the ones who notice quickly when they are not themselves. Where access or communication need proper attention, they get it rather than being treated as an afterthought. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please ring us if you would like to visit.

We are Woodlands View, a nursing home in Stevenage. We care for older people and for younger adults with nursing needs, including many people living with dementia and people with a physical disability. Rooms are personalised, people get up and settle at night when they choose, and meals are something to look forward to rather than an item on a timetable. Our staff take time to learn who somebody was before they needed care. For those living with dementia we work patiently and with the person's history in view. We do not correct or reorient. We find what works for someone on a given day and go with it, and the days are calmer for it. Relatives are welcome whenever they want to come and we keep them properly informed. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good. Please contact us to arrange a visit.

Water Mill House Care Home provides nursing care in Hemel Hempstead for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people who have sight or hearing loss. We also take planned respite stays. Having qualified nurses on site at all hours means health needs can be watched and managed as they change rather than dealt with as emergencies, and it means people can usually stay here with staff who know them instead of moving back and forth to hospital. Alongside that we work at keeping ordinary life intact, because a nursing home run like a ward is a poor place to live. Residents choose their own routines, relatives are welcome whenever they want to come, and meals are meant to be enjoyed. We would rather be honest about our inspection position than leave families to find it out elsewhere. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. The findings described real shortfalls and we accepted them. Since then our manager has tightened medicines practice and record keeping, strengthened training and supervision, and put regular internal checks in place so that we notice problems ourselves. That work continues. If you are considering us for a relative, please visit, ask exactly what has changed since the inspection, and talk to residents and families while you are here.

    • Nursing Home

Trembaths is a nursing home in Letchworth Garden City caring for older people who need qualified nursing alongside help with everyday life. Nurses are on duty day and night, which means medication, wound and pressure care and conditions that need close monitoring are managed here, and somebody who becomes unwell is seen straight away rather than waiting for an appointment. Many of our residents are living with dementia. We keep the day calm and familiar, keep the same staff working with the same people and take the time to understand what somebody means when speech has become difficult. If a person wants to be up and moving about, we make that safe instead of asking them to sit down. Rushing never saves anybody time, so we plan on the basis that things take as long as they take. Good nursing exists to make an ordinary life possible. Residents choose when they get up, what they eat, where they sit and who comes to visit, and meals are cooked here with nobody hurried through a plate. Respite stays are available for people needing nursing support for a short period, often after a spell in hospital, and for family carers who need a proper break. Families are welcome and we would always rather be told early when something is not right. Please ring us if you would like to come and look round.

    • Nursing Home

Autumn Vale is a nursing home in Welwyn, Hertfordshire. We support older people and younger adults whose needs include nursing care, including many living with dementia, and we offer respite stays. Nursing care under the same roof means continuity of both staff and surroundings when somebody's health changes, which is the whole point. A nursing home can slide into feeling medical, and we work at not letting it. People here are residents rather than patients, and the day should reflect that. For residents living with dementia we protect routine, keep surroundings familiar, and ask relatives for the details that let us understand what somebody means. Having younger adults as well as older residents means we plan individually rather than running one routine. What a person in their forties wants from an afternoon is rarely what suits somebody forty years older. When somebody is nearing the end of their life we try to get the small things right: familiar faces, a quiet room, family welcome at any hour, and no unnecessary fuss. The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. We do not think it settles the question, and we would rather you came and judged for yourself.

Arden House Nursing Home is in Kings Langley, caring for older people and for adults whose health needs mean qualified nurses need to be on hand at any hour. That cover means changes are picked up early and managed here wherever possible rather than through repeated journeys to hospital. We support people living with a physical disability, where dignity and practical independence matter as much as anything clinical, and younger adults, whose routines and interests we plan for in their own right rather than expecting them to fit an older person's day. Respite care is available too, for people recovering after illness and for family carers who need a proper break. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it, and we are also clear eyed about what a rating is. It reflects a point in time. What keeps a home good is the ordinary daily effort, knowing how each person likes their morning to go, noticing when somebody has gone quiet and telling families things before they have to ask. If you are considering nursing care in this part of Hertfordshire, come and see the place, meet the nurses and carers and ask whatever you want to know.

Howe Dell Manor is a nursing home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, with registered nurses on duty around the clock alongside our care team. We look after older people whose health needs require nursing, younger adults with nursing needs, and people living with mental health conditions. People generally come to us when their health needs have grown beyond what residential care or support at home can safely meet. The nursing covers management of long term conditions, wound and skin care, continence support, help where eating and swallowing have become difficult, and careful oversight of medication. We work closely with local GPs, district nurses and therapy teams, and we ask for specialist advice early rather than waiting to see how matters develop. Where somebody is living with a mental health condition alongside nursing needs, a calm and predictable household matters as much as any clinical intervention, and we plan the day with that in mind. What we work at avoiding is letting the clinical side take over. Someone living here is a person before they are a set of needs. Respite stays are available. Our most recent rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, and visitors are welcome.

Dementia care is a significant part of our work and rests on familiar staff, a settled routine and taking the time to learn what reassures each individual. We support residents with physical disabilities and those with a visual or hearing impairment, adapting how we communicate and how we assist so that dignity is never traded for convenience, and we care for younger adults whose conditions require nursing support, planning their days around their own interests. Respite stays are available for families needing a planned break or extra support after a hospital discharge. We do not currently hold an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. Abbey Lodge Care Home in St Albans is a nursing home caring for adults with nursing needs, including people managing mental health conditions. We also offer respite stays. Qualified nurses are on duty at all hours, which means health needs are met on site rather than through repeated journeys to hospital, and it means somebody notices early when a resident is becoming unwell rather than once it is obvious. Much of our work is with people who have both nursing needs and a mental health condition, a combination that services often handle badly. Somebody with a long standing mental health condition is too often not asked properly about physical symptoms, and somebody who is physically unwell is too often assumed to be simply unsettled. We try hard not to make either mistake, and we work closely with community mental health teams, care coordinators and GPs so that our approach is consistent with what people are used to. Residents have their own rooms and their own routines, and we ask at the outset how somebody has always liked their day to run. Staff are available without being intrusive, and we hold regular residents meetings and act on what comes out of them. Respite stays here are properly planned, with a visit beforehand so that arriving is not a shock. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and see us.

Here at Field House Care Home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, we provide nursing care for people who need a high level of support in a warm and settled environment. Our team works across a range of specialisms including older person care, dementia care, care for younger adults, and respite care, so we are able to support people with quite different needs and circumstances under one roof. We know that choosing a nursing home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. When someone moves into Field House, whether for a short respite stay or as their long term home, we want them to feel genuinely comfortable here. That means getting to know the person properly, understanding their routines, their preferences, and what matters most to them day to day, rather than simply managing their clinical needs. Our nursing team is on hand around the clock, and we work closely with GPs, specialists, and community health professionals to make sure each resident receives the right level of medical support. For residents living with dementia, we give particular thought to the environment and the way we communicate, aiming to reduce anxiety and support a sense of familiarity and calm. We want to be straightforward with people: our most recent CQC inspection resulted in an overall rating of requires improvement, and we have taken that seriously. We have been working through the areas identified and making changes where they are needed. We would rather be honest about where we are than gloss over it, and we are committed to demonstrating progress over time. If you would like to visit Field House and see things for yourself, we would be very happy to show you around and answer any questions you might have.

    • Nursing Home

River Court Care Home is a nursing home in Watford, caring for older people and younger adults with nursing needs across Hertfordshire, including many people living with dementia. Nursing registration and qualified nurses on site at all hours mean that people whose health is complex and changeable can live here rather than moving back and forth between home and hospital. Medication, wound care, attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and spotting early when somebody is becoming unwell are everyday work for us. Dementia nursing is a large part of what we do and we have firm views about it. The assumption that people with advanced dementia have stopped noticing is wrong in our experience. Tone of voice registers. Being rushed registers. A familiar face registers. So we protect continuity of staffing, we speak to people rather than about them, and we take the time to learn what settles a particular person when they are frightened, because it is rarely the same thing twice. We support younger adults as well as older people, and we try to remember that a younger person with nursing needs has a different idea of what a week should contain. Families often carry a good deal of guilt about this stage, and part of our job is making the home somewhere they want to be rather than somewhere they visit out of duty. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Visit at a busy time and ask the nurses how the hard nights are handled.

Monread Lodge is a nursing home in Knebworth, Hertfordshire. We provide nursing care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we also support some younger adults with nursing needs. Respite stays are available. Having qualified nurses on site means people can remain with us as their health needs change rather than facing another move. But most of what makes a day good or bad here has little to do with nursing. It is whether somebody was helped at their own pace, whether the food was something they actually wanted, whether their room feels like theirs and whether they were asked rather than told. For residents living with dementia those things matter even more, alongside familiar staff and routines that change only when there is a reason. We need to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent overall judgement from the Care Quality Commission was that we require improvement. We accepted the findings rather than arguing with them, we have an action plan in place and we are working through it with colleagues in health and the local authority. Families deserve to hear that from us directly instead of finding it elsewhere. If you are considering Monread Lodge for a relative, please come and visit. Look at the home properly, speak to our nurses and the people living here, and ask us exactly what the concerns were and what we have changed. We will answer plainly.

Hatfield Manor is a nursing home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. We provide care for adults whose health needs require qualified nursing, and support with daily living for those who need a hand with it. We care for older people, adults living with dementia, adults with mental health needs, adults with a physical disability and younger adults. A home with that mix of needs only works if the planning is done person by person, so we spend real time at the beginning asking about history, routines, preferences and worries, and we put the answers to use rather than filing them away. Our nursing team is here through the day and the night. Medication, health monitoring and clinical care happen on site, and when something changes we act on it quickly and tell families promptly. We keep in regular touch with general practitioners, district nurses and community specialists. We also pay attention to how the place feels. Meals are cooked here, people get up and go to bed when it suits them, rooms are filled with their own things, and visitors are a normal part of the week. Where someone is nearing the end of life, we try to make that time peaceful and familiar. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet received an overall rating from them. If you would like to see the home, please arrange a visit and we will make time to talk properly.

What nursing homes cost in Hertfordshire, per week

Nursing dementia care Middle half of prices from 10 East homes. Median £1,940.Not published separately£1,870 to £2,100

Published prices are often starting prices, and come from homes that publish fees, so treat them as a guide. What a council pays differs from council to council. Ask the home for its own price. Powered by Orrery Intelligence.

Arranging and funding a nursing home place in Hertfordshire

78 homes are listed here, which is enough choice to be useful and enough to be overwhelming if the search is not narrowed early. Distance from the people who will visit, the kind of clinical support needed and the published inspection record will take that number down to a handful faster than anything else.

Is nursing care what is actually needed

Nursing registration is about continuous health needs rather than occasional ones. Wound care, catheter and stoma management, medication that has to be watched closely, recovery after a stroke and conditions liable to change quickly all point towards a home with nurses on the premises. Where the everyday need is help with washing, dressing, meals and company, a residential home may do just as well at a lower weekly cost. Settling this question first avoids the distress of moving somebody twice in a year.

Where the ratings sit

The picture across Hertfordshire is genuinely mixed. Six homes hold Outstanding, among them Arden House Nursing Home and Kingfisher Nursing Home, forty two are rated Good, twenty two sit at Requires Improvement and eleven are yet to be rated. That proportion at Requires Improvement is worth taking seriously, though it does not rule a home out on its own. Read which of the key questions inspectors marked down, note when the report was published, and ask the manager directly what has been put right since.

Making the most of a visit

Book one visit and, if the home is willing, drop in for a second at a busier hour such as mid morning or a mealtime. Ask how many registered nurses cover the night, how sickness and leave are filled, and how long the manager has been in post. Look at whether residents seem occupied rather than simply supervised, and listen to how staff speak to people who cannot easily reply.

Choosing between nursing homes in Hertfordshire

This part is usually left until a place has been offered, which is the least helpful moment to start it. An assessment first gives the search a clearer brief and produces an earlier answer on what support towards the cost a family can count on.

Asking for a care needs assessment

The assessment is free and open to anyone who appears to need care and support, whatever their savings. Hertfordshire County Council is the authority responsible for carrying it out and for producing the care and support plan that follows, which records the level of care needed and whether a nursing home is the right answer. Homes use that plan when judging whether they can meet somebody's needs safely, so it is worth having before enquiries begin.

What the council and the NHS contribute

A financial assessment weighs capital, income and property against the national thresholds to decide what the council pays and what the person contributes. NHS funded nursing care is paid separately, straight to the home, towards the nursing element of the fee for residents who qualify, whoever meets the balance. Where somebody's needs are primarily health needs, NHS continuing healthcare can meet the whole placement, and asking whether that has been considered is entirely reasonable.

Understanding what you will pay

Homes set their own fees, which shift with room, location and the level of clinical support provided. Ask for the figure in writing, together with what falls outside it, how often fees are reviewed and how much they have risen in recent years. Ask as well what the home does if private funds run down, because the answer tells you how it treats residents over the long term.

Frequently asked questions about nursing homes in Hertfordshire

Which nursing homes in Hertfordshire are covered on this page?

This page lists 78 nursing homes across Hertfordshire registered with the Care Quality Commission. Homes such as Roebuck Nursing Home, The Chase Care Centre and Ashview Nursing Home appear alongside larger care centres and more specialist settings. Each entry carries the current CQC rating where one has been published. Opening a profile gives you the findings behind that rating before you approach the home.

How does a nursing home differ from a residential care home?

A residential care home offers personal care, meals, company and supervision from staff trained in care but not registered as nurses. A nursing home is registered for clinical care as well, keeping a qualified nurse on duty at every hour. All the homes listed on this page hold nursing registration. Where somebody needs regular clinical attention such as wound care, catheter management or closely monitored medication, the nursing setting is the safer choice.

What should I ask when visiting a nursing home in Hertfordshire?

Ask how many registered nurses and care staff are on duty by day and overnight, and how the home covers sickness and annual leave. Find out how long the manager has been in post and how settled the nursing team is, since stable staffing usually shows in consistent care. Ask how care plans are reviewed, how families are told when something changes, and how the home works with district nurses and hospital teams. It is also fair to ask what would happen if the person's health needs grew more complex.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Hertfordshire?

Contact the adult social care team at Hertfordshire County Council and ask for an assessment for the person who needs support. It is free and available to anyone who appears to need care, whatever their income or savings, and either the person or a relative can request it. A practitioner will look at daily living, mobility, health conditions, risk and the help already being provided at home. The care and support plan that follows then guides both the choice of home and any funding decision.

Can Hertfordshire County Council pay towards a nursing home place?

It can, where a financial assessment shows capital and income falling below the national thresholds. The council assesses the level of need first, then looks separately at finances to decide what it contributes and what the person pays from their income. NHS funded nursing care is also paid towards the nursing part of the fee for residents who qualify, whoever meets the rest. If the main need is a health need, NHS continuing healthcare may fund the placement in full.

How early should we start looking at nursing homes?

Earlier than most families expect, because well regarded homes in Hertfordshire often keep waiting lists and seldom have the right room free at short notice. Where a hospital discharge is likely, begin as soon as nursing care is first mentioned rather than waiting for a date to be fixed. Seeing even a few homes in advance turns a rushed decision into a considered one. If nothing is urgent yet, early visits cost little and make the eventual choice far less pressured.
