About Us
Here at Field House Care Home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, we provide nursing care for people who need a high level of support in a warm and settled environment. Our team works across a range of specialisms including older person care, dementia care, care for younger adults, and respite care, so we are able to support people with quite different needs and circumstances under one roof.
We know that choosing a nursing home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. When someone moves into Field House, whether for a short respite stay or as their long term home, we want them to feel genuinely comfortable here. That means getting to know the person properly, understanding their routines, their preferences, and what matters most to them day to day, rather than simply managing their clinical needs.
Our nursing team is on hand around the clock, and we work closely with GPs, specialists, and community health professionals to make sure each resident receives the right level of medical support. For residents living with dementia, we give particular thought to the environment and the way we communicate, aiming to reduce anxiety and support a sense of familiarity and calm.
We want to be straightforward with people: our most recent CQC inspection resulted in an overall rating of requires improvement, and we have taken that seriously. We have been working through the areas identified and making changes where they are needed. We would rather be honest about where we are than gloss over it, and we are committed to demonstrating progress over time.
If you would like to visit Field House and see things for yourself, we would be very happy to show you around and answer any questions you might have.

More about the care at Field House Care Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
The last published rating for Field House is requires improvement, from an inspection in November 2023. The current registration dates only from 30 March 2026, so that rating may relate to an earlier provider, and a family should ask what was found and what has changed. For older residents the daily work is help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and company. The home says it wants to know the person properly, their routines and preferences, rather than simply manage their clinical needs. Ask how many staff are awake overnight in this Harpenden home, how quickly a call bell is answered, and who checks a resident's own timings are kept.
Dementia
Particular thought to the environment and to the way staff communicate is what this home says it gives to dementia, aiming to reduce anxiety. That is the right description of what helps, along with routines that do not shift and a layout that feels calm and secure. Set against it is a requires improvement rating from November 2023, which predates the current registration but still needs explaining. In a home supporting quite different needs under one roof, consistency is the harder part. Ask what the inspection raised, what dementia training staff receive, and how distress and attempts to leave are handled.
Younger Adults
Supporting quite different needs under one roof is how Field House describes its range, which includes younger adults alongside older people. In a nursing home most residents are likely to be considerably older than 65, so the question is what a week actually holds for somebody younger. Ask who else of a similar age lives there and what is on offer for them.
Respite Care
Respite is one of Field House's registered specialisms, and the home says a short stay should feel as comfortable as a permanent move. Short stays usually need booking well ahead and often carry a minimum length, so ask what applies here. Pack medication and a note of routines, and use the stay to judge whether the home would suit permanently.
Nursing Care
Weekly fees in the East of England commonly run from £1250 to £1600, while Hertfordshire council pays about £900 to £1100. Nursing care means registered nurses on duty at every hour, and Field House says its nursing team is on hand around the clock and works closely with GPs, specialists and community health professionals. It suits someone whose condition needs regular clinical attention rather than help with daily tasks alone. Where a nursing need is assessed, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes about £235 a week. Ask how that appears on an invoice and how any gap between the fee and the council rate would be met.
