About Melland House

Melland House is a nursing home in Manchester, supporting younger adults who have nursing needs alongside mental health needs. We are a specialist setting rather than a general one, and we are clear about that. The people who live here often have long and complicated histories, and have sometimes been difficult for other services to place. We would rather start from what a person needs now than from the thickness of their file. Having qualified nurses on site at every hour means health needs are properly managed here, so nobody has to be moved on each time something changes. That stability is usually the first thing that helps. Beyond it, the work is patient and unglamorous. We learn what a particular person's difficult days look like and what helps on them, which is specific to the individual and often not what you would guess. We do not treat a bad week as a failure or as grounds for taking things away, because dignity is not a reward for good behaviour. We work alongside the mental health teams already involved rather than starting over, and we take care that physical symptoms are not read as behaviour or the reverse. The people here are young adults, and a week should hold something a person would have chosen rather than only observation and medication. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. We are used to hard questions from families and social workers, and we prefer them asked early.

More about the care at Melland House

Nursing Care at Melland House

Two people live at Melland House, which makes it one of the smallest nursing homes anywhere and a specialist setting rather than a general one. Qualified nurses on site at every hour mean health needs are managed on the premises, so nobody has to be moved on each time something changes. That stability is usually the first thing that helps, particularly for people who have been difficult for other services to place. Where nursing need is assessed and agreed, the NHS pays about £235 a week towards it under NHS Funded Nursing Care, against North West fees of £1000 to £1300. Ask whether that assessment has been made and who holds the clinical plan.

Mental Health at Melland House

A bad week is not treated as grounds for taking things away, this home says, which is the right principle and a demanding one. It learns what a particular person's difficult days look like, and works alongside the mental health teams already involved. Ask what experience the staff have, how a crisis is handled overnight, and how physical symptoms are kept from being read as behaviour.

Younger Adults at Melland House

Everybody living here is a younger adult with nursing needs, in a house registered for just two people. That is unusual, and it makes the question of what a week holds easier to answer than in a large home. Ask what the days actually contain, how getting out of the house in Manchester is managed, and who the other resident is likely to be.
