    • Home Care

We are Civicare, a home care agency working across London and the borough of Barnet. Our support is delivered in the place that matters most to the people we care for, which is their own home, surrounded by their own belongings, routines and neighbours. Most of the people we visit are older adults who want to carry on living independently with a little practical help, whether that is assistance with washing and dressing, support with medication, preparing meals, or simply company and a conversation during the day. We also support younger adults, whose needs are different again, and we take time to understand what a good day looks like for each person before we agree how our visits should work. We build our care around conversations rather than assumptions. Families often come to us at a difficult moment, so we try to be straightforward about what we can offer, how often we can visit and who will be coming through the door. Where someone's needs change, we review the plan with them and with the people closest to them. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and work to the standards it sets. We have not yet been given an overall rating, and we are happy to talk openly about that and about how we check the quality of our own work. If you are looking into care at home in Barnet or the wider London area, please get in touch and we will talk things through with you.

Arranging and funding home care in Barnet

Home care allows someone to stay in familiar surroundings while receiving practical and personal support, from short daily visits through to live-in arrangements. Care Assura currently lists 101 home care agencies covering Barnet, giving families a wide range of choice whether the need is help with washing and dressing, medication prompts, meal preparation, or companionship. Of these, one holds an Outstanding CQC rating (Right at Home Camden, Hampstead and Golders Green), 60 are rated Good, three Require Improvement, and 36 are not yet rated, often because they are newer services awaiting their first inspection.

Matching the agency to the person

Start by writing down what a typical week actually looks like. A person recovering from a hospital stay may need twice daily visits for a few weeks, while someone living with dementia may benefit from longer, consistent visits from a small team of familiar carers. Larger providers such as Bluebird Care (Barnet), Mayfair Homecare - Barnet, Westminster Homecare Limited – North London and MiHomecare - Finchley tend to run structured rotas, while smaller local agencies like Good Neighbour Care, Gentle Hands Care Agency Ltd or Walfinch East Barnet may offer more flexibility on visit times.

Reading between the lines of a CQC report

A Good rating is reassuring, but the narrative sections matter as much as the headline. Look at what inspectors say about staff training, medication handling, and how the service responds to concerns. For providers marked as not yet rated, such as Blossom Home Care - Barnet and West Hampstead, Radfield Home Care Barnet and Finchley, or GoodOaks Home Care – Edgware and Finchley, ask directly about staff turnover, supervision, and how care plans are reviewed.

Choosing between home care agencies in Barnet

Before committing to a private arrangement, it is worth requesting a free care needs assessment. This is a structured conversation, usually held at home, where a social worker looks at daily tasks, safety, mobility, and any risks around isolation or falls. The assessment produces a care and support plan that identifies what help is needed and how many hours a week are appropriate.

How London Borough of Barnet supports the process

You can request an assessment through London Borough of Barnet Adult Social Care, which has a statutory duty to carry one out for any resident who appears to need support. If the person is eligible, a financial assessment follows to work out how much the council will contribute. Savings and capital above the upper threshold usually mean paying the full cost, while those below it may receive fully or partially funded care, sometimes through a direct payment that lets the family choose their own agency.

Typical cost context

Home care in and around Barnet is generally charged by the hour, with higher rates at weekends, bank holidays, and for live-in packages. Ask each agency for a written breakdown that shows the hourly rate, mileage or travel charges, and any minimum visit length. If the arrangement is council funded, the agreed rate will be set between the provider and London Borough of Barnet, so check whether any top-up will be needed for extra hours.

Which providers in Barnet offer home care?

Care Assura lists 101 home care agencies serving Barnet, ranging from national names such as Bluebird Care (Barnet), Mayfair Homecare - Barnet and Westminster Homecare Limited – North London to independent local services like Good Neighbour Care, Gentle Hands Care Agency Ltd and Walfinch East Barnet. Right at Home Camden, Hampstead and Golders Green currently holds an Outstanding CQC rating, with 60 further agencies rated Good. A number of newer services, including Blossom Home Care - Barnet and West Hampstead and Radfield Home Care Barnet and Finchley, are not yet rated. You can filter by rating and service type on the Care Assura directory to narrow the list.

What should I ask when arranging home care in Barnet?

Ask each agency how they match carers to clients and whether the same small team will visit consistently. Check the minimum visit length, since very short calls can feel rushed for personal care. Ask how care plans are written, who reviews them, and what happens if the regular carer is unwell or on leave. It is also sensible to ask how the agency handles medication, safeguarding concerns and communication with family members who live elsewhere.

What is the difference between a home care agency and a nursing service?

A home care agency provides personal and practical support in someone's own home, such as help with washing, dressing, meals, medication prompts and companionship. Nursing services involve clinical tasks like wound care, injections, catheter management or PEG feeding, delivered by a registered nurse. Some home care agencies work alongside district nurses so that both types of support are coordinated. If clinical needs are significant, a nursing led service or a nursing home may be more appropriate.

Can London Borough of Barnet fund a home care package?

Yes, if the person meets the national eligibility criteria following a care needs assessment. A separate financial assessment then looks at income, savings and capital to decide how much the council will contribute. Those with assets below the upper capital threshold may receive fully or partially funded care, while people above it usually pay privately. Funded care can be delivered directly through a commissioned provider or via a direct payment, which gives families more choice over which agency they use.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Barnet?

Contact London Borough of Barnet's adult social care team and ask for a care needs assessment, which is free regardless of income. A social worker or assessor will usually visit at home, or arrange a phone or video call, to discuss daily routines, health conditions, mobility and any risks. The outcome is a written care and support plan that sets out what help is needed. If eligible for funded support, a financial assessment follows to work out the contribution.

How far in advance should I start looking for home care in Barnet?

It is best to start looking three to four weeks before care is needed, so there is time to compare agencies, meet coordinators and agree a care plan. Hospital discharges often move faster than this, so if a relative is on a ward it is worth speaking to the discharge team and shortlisting agencies straight away. Good agencies in Barnet can sometimes start within a few days, but preferred visit times and live-in placements tend to book up further ahead. Beginning early also allows time for a council assessment if funding may be involved.
