What care at home in Kendal involves and what to look for
Support at home arrives in visits, and the pattern of those visits is what you are really choosing between. A package might be one morning call to help someone wash and dress, three or four calls through the day covering meals and medication, or a live in arrangement where a carer stays in the house. Working out how many visits are needed and at what times is the first practical step, since it sets the cost and narrows the field to agencies that can reliably cover the round.
Coverage and travelling time
Confirm at the outset that an agency actually covers your address, because in a district of outlying villages and long lanes coverage varies considerably and winter weather makes some rounds harder to staff. Then raise the specific hours you need. Early morning and evening calls are the hardest to fill and the first to move when a rota comes under pressure, so ask how an agency intends to hold those timings week after week.
Reading the inspection record
Home Instead Senior Care and Westmorland Homecare at Kendal hold the two Outstanding ratings on this page, and six further agencies are rated Good. Those reports repay reading because they describe how medication is handled, how staff are trained and supervised and how complaints are dealt with. One agency requires improvement, and there the report explains what inspectors found and what was asked of the provider. Three agencies have no published rating, so you will need to ask more questions directly and take up references where you can.
Getting an assessment and arranging funding
Care at home can be paid for privately or funded after an assessment, and knowing which applies early makes the rest of the search considerably simpler.
The care needs assessment
Anyone who appears to need care and support can request an assessment, and there is no charge whatever someone owns or earns. It considers washing, dressing, mobility, medication, nutrition and how safely someone manages alone, and ends in a written record of the support required. Westmorland and Furness Council carries out that assessment and the financial assessment that decides who pays. Where you provide care yourself, ask for a carer's assessment at the same time, because your own needs are weighed independently.
What home care costs
Agencies charge an hourly rate as a rule, with higher rates at weekends, on bank holidays and where two carers are needed for a safe transfer. Live in care is priced by the week instead. Where funded support applies, the council may meet part or all of the cost, often as a direct payment so that you can choose the agency yourself. Ask for the rate card in writing, ask about minimum visit lengths, and ask whether travel time between calls is charged, since in a rural area that can add appreciably to a short visit. Ask too what notice is required to change or cancel a call, and whether the rate alters if the number of visits each week increases.
