    • Care Home

The Hollies is a residential care home in Wakefield. We provide care for older people, including those living with dementia and those living with mental ill health, people with a physical disability, people with visual or hearing impairment and some younger adults. Respite stays are available too. Supporting a mixed group under one roof means we cannot run the home to a single pattern, and we do not try. What we aim for is a place where people are taken as they come and where support is built around the individual. Some residents want a very structured day. Others want the opposite, plenty of freedom and somewhere steady to come back to. Where someone has a physical disability or reduced sight or hearing, we pay attention to the practical details. Equipment that suits the person, a layout that stays predictable, things kept where people expect to find them, and staff who adapt how they communicate rather than expecting the person to manage. With dementia, familiar faces and a steady rhythm do most of the work, and we treat distress as something with a cause. Where mental ill health is part of the picture we work closely with community teams. Respite stays suit family carers needing a break and people recovering after illness. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and visit The Hollies.

    • Care Home

Brantwood Hall Care Home is a residential care home in Wakefield. We support older people and younger adults who need help with everyday life, including residents living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period or whose family carer needs a break. We think of this as somewhere people live, not somewhere care is delivered to them, and we try to make that difference obvious in how the house runs. Residents tell us when they like to get up, what they want to eat, how much help they want and where they prefer to spend the day. Support with personal care, meals, medication and appointments is given quietly and with proper regard for privacy, and whatever someone can still do for themselves is protected rather than taken over. Dementia care shapes much of our work. Knowing a person's history, the people and places that matter to them and the rhythms that suit them is what allows us to reassure someone who is anxious instead of arguing with them. We keep the day familiar and explain changes in advance wherever we can. Company matters too, and we pay attention to residents who would otherwise spend the day alone in their room. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would far rather hear about a worry while it is still small. Anyone considering Brantwood Hall is welcome to visit and see the home on an ordinary day.

    • Care Home

Broxbourne House is a residential care home in Wakefield, and the people who live here are a broader group than many homes take on. Older people who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia. Adults living with mental ill health. People with physical disabilities. Younger adults. Respite stays are available as well. Supporting that mix well depends on treating people as individuals rather than as categories, and that is genuinely how we run the place. Support is agreed with the person, written in terms they recognise, and reviewed as things change. Some residents need a great deal of hands on help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility. Others mainly want stability, company when they choose it, and a household that holds together through a difficult week. For residents living with dementia we keep routines and surroundings familiar and give people time rather than hurrying them. For those living with mental ill health, the valuable thing is usually steadiness: a team who know them, and no drama when a bad stretch comes. For residents with physical disabilities the emphasis is on equipment that fits and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. We take complaints seriously and would far rather hear about a small problem early than a large one later. Families who tell us when something is not right are doing us a favour. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit on an ordinary day and take your time deciding.

    • Care Home

West Villa Residential Home is in Wakefield, providing residential care for older people and for younger adults whose needs are best met in a home of this kind. Much of our work is with people living with dementia, and with people whose mental health needs shape the support they receive. Neither responds well to a rigid routine, so we do not run one. We keep the day calm, we keep familiar faces around people, and we take time early on to learn somebody's history and habits from them and from their family. That knowledge is what lets us respond sensibly when a person is unsettled, rather than guessing at it. Life here belongs to the people who live here. Some want company and whatever is happening in the lounge; others prefer their own room, their own radio and their own peace. Both are fine by us. Care is given discreetly, with proper attention to privacy and dignity, and we support people to keep doing whatever they can still manage for themselves. Visitors are welcome whenever suits them. Respite stays are available as well, giving family carers a planned break and supporting people who need care for a few weeks after illness or a hospital admission. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at homes in Wakefield, please come and see us on an ordinary day.

    • Care Home

Hepworth House is a residential care home in Wakefield. Those living here include older people, many living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. Most of what makes a care home good happens quietly and every day. Food people actually want to eat. Being helped to the bathroom without waiting. Laundry that comes back. Knowing the name of whoever is on this evening. Somebody noticing that you have been quieter than usual for a few days. We put our effort there rather than into anything that reads impressively at a distance. For residents living with dementia we protect the routine and keep surroundings familiar, and we ask families for the working life, the places and the names, because those are what still connect when much else has slipped. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of it and slightly cautious about it, because a rating describes a period rather than a permanent condition. What keeps it true is the same daily attention to small things that earned it. Relatives are welcome unannounced, and they often notice what we have stopped seeing.

    • Care Home

Hepworth House is a residential care home in Wakefield. We support older people who need help with daily life, residents living with dementia, and residents whose mental health means a steady and predictable place is what helps most. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was outstanding. We are proud of it and we are also wary of it, because a rating describes a period of time rather than a permanent condition, and the work that earned it has to be done again every week. What it reflects is not a single initiative but the accumulation of small things: knowing residents properly, keeping promises, noticing changes early, and dealing with concerns when they are still small. In practice we plan each resident's care with them and with whoever knows them best, and we are specific about where help is welcome and where it would take something away. For residents with dementia we keep faces, routines and surroundings consistent and treat distress as having a cause worth finding. Where mental health is the primary need we work calmly, in step with community teams, and we do not regard a difficult stretch as a failure. Families are closely involved here, not kept at a polite distance, and we would far rather hear a complaint early than a compliment late. Do come and see us. Visit on an ordinary day, talk to residents, and judge the place for yourself.

    • Care Home

We at Flanshaw Lodge are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in Wakefield, providing dedicated dementia care and support for older people in the heart of the local community. Our home has been thoughtfully designed to feel just that, a home, where every resident is valued as an individual with their own story, preferences, and needs. Nestled within the familiar surroundings of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, our location within the WF postcode area means residents remain close to the communities they know and love. Families visiting from across Wakefield and the wider Yorkshire and Humberside region will find us conveniently placed, making it easier to maintain the precious bonds and regular visits that mean so much to those in our care. Our specialist areas of support reflect the breadth of care we provide. Alongside residential care for older people, we offer dedicated dementia care delivered with patience, understanding, and genuine compassion. We recognise that a dementia diagnosis can feel overwhelming for the whole family, and our approach focuses on preserving dignity, encouraging independence where possible, and creating calm, reassuring routines that help residents feel safe and settled each day. We also welcome younger adults into our community, understanding that care needs are not defined by age alone. Every person who joins us receives support tailored to their individual circumstances, interests, and aspirations. For families who need short term support, our respite care offers a valuable option, whether you are seeking a trial stay, recovering from a hospital admission, or simply need reassurance that your loved one is well cared for whilst you take a well earned break. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good, with Good ratings achieved across all five key areas of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. This independent assessment reflects the standards we work hard to uphold every day, from the safety measures that protect our residents to the responsiveness of our team when needs change, and the leadership that keeps our home moving in the right direction. Choosing a care home is one of the most important decisions a family will ever make, and we understand the weight of that choice. We warmly invite you to get in touch with Flanshaw Lodge to arrange a visit, meet our team, and see for yourself the caring atmosphere we have built. Whether you are exploring options for the future or need support more urgently, we are here to listen, to answer your questions, and to help you find the right way forward for your loved one.

    • Care Home

Ashgrove House is a residential care home in Wakefield caring for older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss. Running a home with that range of needs works only if everybody is treated as an individual, which is where we start. Each person's support is planned with them and, where they want it, with their family, and it covers the practical help with washing, dressing, moving safely, medication and meals as well as the things that make a day worth having. Our staff are trained for the needs they support and they stay long enough to know people properly. Knowing somebody is what lets you notice that they are in pain when they cannot say so, or low rather than simply tired. The home is somewhere people live. Rooms are personalised, meals are cooked here with a genuine choice, visitors are welcome, and there is company for those who want it and quiet for those who do not. Respite and short stays can be arranged. If you are looking at care homes in Wakefield, please ring us and arrange to come and see.

    • Care Home

Snapethorpe Hall is a residential care home in Wakefield. We provide a home for older people who need support with daily living, and for younger adults who need a supportive household. Respite stays are available as well, planned or at short notice. The first fortnight after a move matters enormously, and we give it real thought. Before somebody arrives we want to know what time they wake, how they take their tea, what they cannot abide and who they want to be able to ring. Those details are what begin turning a strange room into their room. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we do only as much as somebody needs. Where a resident can still manage something themselves, they keep it, and we are in no hurry to take things over. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and we treat it as caring for a person rather than managing a condition. We keep the day's rhythm steady and the surroundings familiar, give people time instead of finishing their sentences for them, and ask families about earlier life, because that knowledge is what makes sense of a mood or a repeated question. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon. A home is much easier to judge when nothing has been arranged for a visitor's benefit, and we would rather you saw us as we actually are.

    • Care Home

Snapethorpe Hall is a residential care home in Wakefield, supporting older people and younger adults, including many people living with dementia. Honesty first, because you will find it anyway. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are not going to dress that up. The inspection identified things that fell short, we accept the findings, and we are working through them rather than disputing them. If you are weighing us up for a relative, ask us directly what was raised and what we have done about it, and expect a straight answer rather than reassurance. What we are trying to do here is what any decent residential home does: take the practical weight off somebody's shoulders so that the rest of life can carry on. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people want to eat. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. A day with enough shape to be worth getting up for, and no obligation to join in with anything. Dementia care is a large part of our work. Familiar faces, an unhurried house and enough knowledge of a person's history to reach them when they are distressed do far more than correction ever will, and relatives usually hold that history. Come and see the place at a busy time of day. Talk to residents and their families rather than taking our word for anything.

    • Care Home

We at Ashby Lodge Residential Home offer a warm and welcoming residential care setting in the heart of Wakefield, where older people can feel truly at home. As a dedicated residential care home in Wakefield, we provide compassionate support tailored to each individual who comes through our doors. Our home is rooted in the local Wakefield community within the WF postcode area, offering residents the comfort of familiar surroundings whilst benefiting from a peaceful environment designed with their wellbeing in mind. The setting has been thoughtfully arranged to feel like a true home rather than an institution, providing comfortable communal spaces where residents can socialise, relax, and enjoy the company of others, alongside private areas for quiet reflection or time with visiting loved ones. Our specialisms span older person care, general residential care, dementia care, and support for those living with mental health needs. In practice, this means we understand that every resident arrives with their own life story, preferences, and care requirements. For families considering dementia care, our team is experienced in offering the patient, person centred approach that helps residents feel safe, understood, and respected, even as their needs evolve. For those living with mental health conditions, we aim to provide a stable, supportive environment where dignity and emotional wellbeing are placed at the centre of daily life. Older residents who simply require help with the routines of everyday living can expect kind, attentive support that promotes as much independence as possible, whilst ensuring help is always close at hand. We recognise that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and transparency matters. Following our most recent CQC inspection in September 2025, our home received an overall rating of Requires Improvement. Within that inspection, we were rated Good in three key areas: Effective, Caring, and Responsive. This reflects the genuine warmth our team brings to every interaction, the meaningful relationships we build with residents, and our commitment to responding thoughtfully to changing needs. The areas identified as Requires Improvement, namely Safe and Well led, are ones we take seriously, and we are actively working to strengthen these aspects of our home so that every family can feel completely confident in the care we deliver. If you are exploring residential care options in Wakefield for a loved one, we would be delighted to hear from you. We understand the worries, questions, and emotions that come with this journey, and we are here to listen, to answer honestly, and to help you decide whether our home might be the right fit. Please do reach out to arrange a conversation or a visit, and let us show you the care and community we have to offer.

Gateholme is a residential care home in Wakefield, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with learning disabilities and autism, people managing mental health conditions and people with physical disabilities. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather put that at the front than have somebody discover it later. It is not the rating we want and we are not going to explain it away. There is an improvement plan in place, we are working through it with our staff, the people who live here and their families, and anybody considering a move is entitled to ask exactly what is changing, who is accountable for it and what evidence there is that it is taking hold. The life of the house carries on meanwhile and it matters to the people in it. That means support with washing, dressing, medication, meals and mobility given in a way that protects dignity, communication adapted to suit each person, and staff who know somebody well enough to notice when they are not themselves. Respite stays are available. We would encourage families to visit, ask hard questions and judge our progress directly.

Inwood House is a residential care home in Wakefield providing a home for older people and for younger adults who need help with everyday life. We support people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, and people living with mental health conditions. The place runs at the pace of the people in it. Breakfast happens when somebody wakes rather than when a trolley arrives, and the day takes the shape a person wants. The care covers washing and dressing, medication, meals cooked here, mobility and the many small practical things that become difficult alone. For those living with dementia and for people managing mental health conditions, patience and familiarity achieve more than any amount of procedure. Our staff tend to stay with us, which means people here are looked after by faces they recognise, and that continuity counts for a great deal when memory or mood is unpredictable. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would much rather hear a concern early than late. Respite stays are available. We are Elm Lodge Residential Care Home in Wakefield. We look after older people, including those living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. We keep things deliberately homely. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you like to wake, where you want your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly with the paper: those decisions stay with you. A good deal of what makes a day here pleasant is quite ordinary, and we would rather describe it plainly than dress it up. For people living with dementia the useful work is in the detail. Knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, being willing to go at their pace rather than the rota's. Done properly that prevents a great deal of distress before it starts. We are also careful to support what people can still do for themselves, because that is often what worries people most about moving into a home, and losing it is not inevitable. Visitors are welcome at any reasonable hour. Please ring us if you would like to look round.

Residents have their own rooms with their own belongings, get up and go to bed when they choose and decide how they want to spend their days. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody says they would rather have something else. Much of what makes a care home worth living in is small and unglamorous: being helped to wash without being rushed, a hot drink at the time you actually want it, somebody noticing when you have gone quiet and sitting down with you. Dementia care, as we have come to understand it, is mostly a matter of knowing the person. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows a member of staff to reassure somebody who is frightened or cannot place where they are. Family and friends are welcome whenever they would like to come, and we would always rather a relative raised a concern straight away. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Do come and look round and ask us anything.

Walton Manor is a residential care home in Wakefield. We provide a home for older people, including those living with dementia, people with a physical disability and people managing mental health conditions, and we also offer respite stays for shorter periods of care. What we aim to offer is a settled, familiar place where people keep their own routines and their own things around them. We ask about preferences in detail, because how somebody likes their morning to go is not a small matter when it shapes the rest of their day. Residents decide how much company they want and how much time to themselves, and we try to make both genuinely possible rather than simply offering the choice on paper. We should be straightforward with you about where we stand. Our most recent overall judgement from the Care Quality Commission was that we require improvement. We accepted the findings rather than arguing with them, we have a plan of work in place and we are progressing it alongside colleagues in health and the local authority. Families deserve to hear that from us directly instead of discovering it later. If you are considering Walton Manor for someone you love, please come and visit. Look at the home properly, speak to our staff and the people living here, and ask us exactly what the concerns were and what we have changed since. Those are the right questions to put to any home, and we will answer them plainly rather than steer you towards a brochure.

Haven Lodge is a residential care home in Wakefield. We support older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including people living with dementia or a mental health condition, people with a physical disability and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We also take respite bookings. We try to keep the home feeling domestic. People wake in their own time, keep their own belongings around them, decide how the day goes and are not rushed through anything. Meals are meant to be enjoyed rather than got through, and visitors are welcome through the day without arranging it first. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you come across it somewhere else. We know which areas were flagged, work is under way, and we will go through it honestly with any family considering us or already trusting us with a relative. People making this kind of decision deserve straight answers far more than they deserve a polished paragraph. What we will always do is tell you when something has gone wrong and what we are doing about it, and raise it early when a relative's needs are changing rather than presenting you with a decision already taken. If you are looking at residential or respite care in Wakefield, please come and see us.

We provide residential and nursing care in Wakefield for people whose needs range from help with daily living to care that requires qualified nursing. We look after older people and younger adults, including those living with dementia, adults with learning disabilities and autistic people. Having registered nurses on duty means medication, pain, wounds, continence and the difficulties people have with eating, drinking and moving can be managed properly and without waiting, and that a change in somebody's health is noticed early. Because we provide residential care as well, a person whose needs increase over time does not necessarily have to move again, which matters a great deal to those who have already made one difficult move. Alongside the clinical work we try to protect the ordinary business of living: choosing when to get up, what to wear, what to eat and who you want sitting with you. Where somebody is autistic or has a learning disability, the way care is offered often matters more than what is offered, so we pay attention to how a person communicates and what helps them feel safe. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and see us and ask whatever you need to.

Foxwood Lodge Residential Care Home cares for older people and younger adults in Wakefield, including residents living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with a physical disability. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. As a residential home our focus is on daily life supported properly, with community health professionals involved when someone needs them. What we aim for is a house where people are known rather than managed. That sounds obvious and it takes real discipline, because the pressures of a rota pull the other way. It means help with washing and dressing at a sensible pace, medication given reliably, food worth looking forward to and staff who have been here long enough to notice when a resident is quieter than usual. For people living with dementia we keep the routine predictable and the faces familiar, and we ask relatives for the details of a life that no assessment captures. Where someone has a physical disability we take trouble over how help is given, since being assisted clumsily is its own kind of loss. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission, and we would rather people came and saw the home than took our word for it.

    • Care Home

Woodlands Residential Home is in Wakefield, and we provide residential care for older people who need support with daily living, including those living with dementia, those with physical disabilities and those living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available too. Moving into a care home is a considerable step, and our first job is to make this feel like somewhere a person lives rather than somewhere they have been put. Rooms are people's own, with their own furniture and photographs. Visitors come when it suits them. Residents decide when to get up, where to sit, what they want to eat and whether they would rather have company or quiet. We help with personal care, dressing, medication and mobility, and we do as much or as little as somebody needs. Where a resident can still manage their own washing or fold their own clothes, we leave them to it. Dementia care is a large part of our work, and we treat it as caring for a person rather than managing a condition. We keep routines steady and surroundings familiar, give people time instead of hurrying them, and ask families about earlier life, because knowing what somebody did and what they loved tells us a great deal once words become unreliable. For residents living with sight or hearing loss, unhurried communication makes most of the difference. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Come and see us on an ordinary afternoon and ask the awkward questions as well as the easy ones.

We at The Sycamores are proud to offer a warm and welcoming residential care home in the heart of Wakefield, providing compassionate support for older people, younger adults, and those living with dementia. Nestled within the Wakefield community in West Yorkshire, our home offers a comfortable and homely environment where residents can feel truly at ease. The familiar surroundings of the WF postcode area mean families remain close by, making visits easy and helping our residents maintain their valued connections with the local community. Our setting has been thoughtfully created to feel less like an institution and more like a place to call home, with communal spaces designed to encourage companionship as well as quieter corners for moments of calm and reflection. Our specialisms span residential care for older people, dedicated dementia support, and care for younger adults whose needs may differ from those traditionally associated with later life. In practice, this means our approach is always tailored to the individual. For someone living with dementia, this might involve gentle routines, reassuring familiarity, and meaningful activities that nurture wellbeing and dignity. For older residents seeking residential care, it means support with daily living delivered with respect and warmth, allowing independence to flourish wherever possible. For younger adults in our care, we recognise the importance of social engagement, personal goals, and a sense of purpose, shaping our support around what matters most to each person. Families choosing a home for a loved one understandably want assurance that the care provided meets recognised standards. We are pleased that our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection in June 2022 awarded us a Good rating overall, with Good ratings across every domain assessed, including Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well-led. This consistent recognition reflects the dedication of our team and our ongoing commitment to providing care that is safe, responsive to individual needs, and led with integrity. It also offers families peace of mind that their loved one is in capable and caring hands. We understand that searching for the right care home is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we are here to help guide you through it with honesty, kindness, and patience. If you would like to learn more about life at The Sycamores in Wakefield, or to arrange a conversation about how we might support your loved one, we warmly invite you to get in touch. Every family deserves to feel confident and supported in this journey, and we would be honoured to welcome you.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Wakefield

Dementia changes what a good home looks like. Warmth still counts, but so does the layout of the building, the steadiness of the staff group and what happens on a difficult evening. The questions worth asking are more specific than they would be for general residential care.

Grades that vary widely

One home on this list holds Outstanding and eleven hold Good, meaning inspectors judged those safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led at the last visit. Four hold Requires Improvement and one has no published rating. One carries Inadequate, the regulator's most serious judgement, and that report should be read in full before any visit is arranged. In every case the date of the inspection matters as much as the word attached to it.

A building that helps rather than confuses

Ask how a resident finds their way about: contrasting doors and handrails, natural light, and somewhere safe to walk when restlessness sets in. Ask what happens in the late afternoon, when agitation is common, and what is tried before medication is ever discussed. Ask whether a bedroom can be furnished with familiar things and whether waking, bathing and mealtimes follow lifelong habits rather than the rota.

Training, staffing and knowing people

Ask what dementia specific training carers have completed, who delivers it and how often it is refreshed. Ask how many staff cover the night and what they do when someone is frightened in the small hours. Ask how long the current team has worked there, because familiarity does more for a person living with dementia than almost anything else a home provides.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Wakefield

The assessment of needs

Any adult who appears to need care and support can ask for a free assessment, whatever their savings. It should record what the person can still manage, where support is required and how memory and understanding affect daily life, involving them as far as possible. Where capacity to decide is in doubt, the choice must be made in their best interests with family consulted. Arrange it through Wakefield Metropolitan District Council adult social care, and ask for a carer's assessment of your own if you have been providing support.

Who pays for a placement

A financial assessment follows, comparing capital and income with national thresholds. Above the upper threshold the placement is self funded; below it the council contributes on a sliding calculation while the resident pays a share from income. Where health needs are substantial, continuing healthcare funding from the National Health Service may apply instead, and it is reasonable to ask for that to be considered. Request every calculation in writing.

Fees and what they include

Weekly fees differ between homes and between rooms, and places staffed more heavily for dementia support often sit at the upper end of the local range. Ask for a written breakdown of what the fee covers and what is charged separately. Ask what happens to the fee if needs increase markedly, and how much notice precedes a rise.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Wakefield

How many dementia care homes are there in Wakefield?

Wakefield has 21 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 36 CQC registered care homes in Wakefield: 2 Outstanding, 11 Good, 5 Requires improvement, 2 Inadequate, 1 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Wakefield were inspected most recently?

Brantwood Hall Care Home (24 September 2026), Elm Lodge Residential Care Home (1 July 2026) and Ashby Lodge Residential Home (1 October 2025) have the most recent CQC reports.

Which homes in Wakefield provide dementia care?

21 residential care homes in Wakefield registered to support people living with dementia appear in this collection. Each has a profile on Care Assura showing its published rating and linking to the inspection report behind it. All are registered with the Care Quality Commission, the regulator for adult social care in England. Given how widely the grades vary here, reading the reports rather than the ratings alone is the sensible way to narrow the list.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Wakefield?

Ask what dementia training staff receive, how often it is refreshed and how many carers work overnight. Ask what the home does when a resident becomes distressed or determined to leave, and what is tried before medication is considered. Ask whether familiar belongings can come along and whether personal routines are respected. Ask too how families are kept informed and what came of the last concern anyone raised.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides accommodation and personal care with staff trained to support memory loss and changes in behaviour. A dementia nursing home offers the same alongside registered nurses on duty at every hour, so clinical needs are met without moving elsewhere. The difference lies in each provider's registration and decides who a home may admit. Where swallowing difficulties, advanced frailty or complex medication are involved, a nursing registered home is usually the safer choice.

Can Wakefield Metropolitan District Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where the needs assessment shows residential dementia care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national upper threshold. Any contribution is worked out on a sliding scale, with the resident normally paying something from income. Where health needs are substantial, National Health Service continuing healthcare funding may apply instead and should be considered. Ask for the calculations in writing so they can be checked.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Wakefield?

Contact Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and ask for an adult social care needs assessment. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative or friend, or from a GP, memory service or hospital team. It is free and savings do not affect the right to be assessed. The written outcome sets out the support required and becomes the basis for choosing a home and for any funding decision.

How far ahead should we start looking?

As early as the diagnosis allows, because dementia homes with good reputations fill quickly and a crisis leaves very little choice. Looking early also means the person can visit and give a view while they are still able to weigh one home against another. A calm sequence is to request the assessment, shortlist a few homes and visit each more than once. Should a hospital stay force the timing, a short term placement can hold the position while the family looks properly.
