- Care Home
Aegis Residential Care is a care home in Pontefract providing a settled and comfortable place to live for older people and younger adults who need support close at hand. We run as a household rather than an institution, and the day belongs to the people living it. Supporting residents living with dementia is a substantial part of our work. We do that by learning who each person is, keeping routines familiar and the day unhurried, explaining changes before they happen, and looking for the cause when somebody is unsettled rather than treating it as behaviour to be contained. Our team helps with personal care, medication, mobility and meals, and just as much with the things that make a day worth having: conversation, company for those who want it, peace for those who do not, and fresh air whenever the weather allows. Rooms are personalised and relatives are welcome whenever they can come. Respite stays are available for people needing care for a short period, which some families use as a break and others as a first step. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. If you are looking at care homes in this part of West Yorkshire, please come and see us on an ordinary day.

- Care Home
Fairwood Fields Care Home is a residential home in Pontefract, Wakefield, supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and people with a visual or hearing impairment. We try to run a house rather than an institution, and the difference lies mostly in small decisions. People get up when they are ready. Meals are unhurried and worth turning up for. Somebody who wants their own company can have it without being coaxed into the lounge. Help with washing and dressing is given in a way that protects dignity, which usually comes down to asking first, explaining what we are doing, and never taking over a task a person can still manage themselves. Dementia care is a significant part of our work, and the most useful knowledge almost always comes from families. We ask for that history, record it and pass it between shifts. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. We are registered with the Care Quality Commission and have not yet been given an overall rating. We say so plainly and welcome visits.

- Care Home
Fairwood Fields Care Home is a residential care home in Pontefract, supporting older people and younger adults across the Wakefield district, including people living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. People rarely move into a care home at a cheerful moment. It usually follows a fall, a hospital admission, a bereavement, or a long slow period in which managing at home stopped being realistic. We treat the first few weeks as the part that matters most and we go at the person's pace rather than the paperwork's. Somebody may well be grieving for their own house while settling into a room here, and pretending otherwise does not help them. After that, the work is ordinary and important. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people want to eat. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. Enough going on to give the day a shape, with nobody obliged to take part. For residents with a physical disability, the right equipment and staff who know each person's preferred way of being helped to move keep a life from shrinking to the size of a chair. With dementia we work on familiar faces and a calm house rather than correction, and relatives usually know the detail that unlocks a difficult afternoon. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and look round at a busy time of day and ask whatever you need to.

Stella House Residential Care Home is in Pontefract, in the Wakefield area. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia or with mental ill health and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. We run the home the way a household runs. People get up when they wake, sit where they choose, eat what they enjoy and keep the habits of a lifetime. Help with washing, dressing, medication and getting about is given when it is needed, quietly and without anybody feeling they have been taken over. Supporting a mixed group of residents works when everybody is treated as an individual. Some people want quiet and routine, others want company and something going on, and both are entirely reasonable ways to live. For residents living with dementia, our team relies on knowing the person, their history and the things that reassure them. Families are part of the home here. Relatives visit when it suits them, and we keep in touch about health and mood rather than only ringing when something has gone wrong. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are looking at residential care in Pontefract or nearby, please arrange to come in, meet the team and see the home on an ordinary afternoon.

- Care Home
Carleton Court Care Home is in Pontefract. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays. We aim to run a household rather than a facility. Residents bring their own furniture and photographs, keep the routines they have always had and decide for themselves how much they want to be part of what is going on. Nobody is walked to an activity they have not chosen. When somebody moves in we spend real time on their history and preferences, from what time they wake and how they take their tea to the work they did and the people who matter to them. It is written down so that everybody working here knows it, because care that changes with whoever is on shift is not care we would accept for our own families. Dementia support rests on familiarity and pace. We keep staffing as consistent as we can, avoid unnecessary change and work out what settles a particular resident, since it is rarely the same for two people. Supporting mental health needs means patience and consistency, and staying in regular contact with community teams and GPs. Meals are cooked on the premises and residents have a say in the menu. Visitors are welcome through the day and can stay for a meal. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please come and look round whenever suits you.

- Care Home
Millfields Residential Care Home is a care home in Pontefract supporting older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with physical disabilities. We are a residential home rather than a nursing home, and that shapes the feel of the place. The emphasis is on daily life: meals, company, familiar routines, visitors, getting outside and having something worth being up for. Practical help with washing, dressing, medication and mobility runs alongside that rather than replacing it. Settling in is where much of our attention goes. Moving into a care home is a genuine loss for most people however necessary it is, and the first few weeks tend to set the tone for everything after. We take time over life histories, encourage people to bring their own furniture and pictures, and never hurry anybody into joining in with things. For people living with dementia we plan around familiarity: consistent staff, consistent routines, and an approach that goes with the person rather than arguing with them. Where somebody is unsettled we look first for a cause we can put right, including pain, noise, boredom or needing the toilet. Where mobility is poor we are careful that it does not turn into somebody being left in one chair all day. Respite stays are available for planned breaks. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. Families are welcome whenever they want to come, and we would far rather hear a complaint early than a polite silence.

Here at Eden Place, we provide residential care for people in the heart of Pontefract, Wakefield. We are proud to have received a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine commitment of everyone who works here to making sure our residents feel safe, valued and at home. We support a wide range of people with different needs and backgrounds. This includes older adults, people living with dementia, individuals with learning disabilities or autism, those experiencing mental health difficulties, and people with physical disabilities or visual and hearing impairments. Whatever brings someone through our doors, we take the time to understand who they are as a person and what matters most to them in their daily life. Our approach is straightforward. We listen, we learn, and we adapt. Care is never one size fits all, and we do not treat it that way. The people who live here have their own routines, preferences and life histories, and we think it is important to honour that. Whether someone needs a high level of support or a little help to maintain their independence, we work with them and their families to get it right. Families and loved ones are always welcome here, and we encourage people to stay involved in the lives of those they care about. We know that moving into a care home can feel like a big step, and we try to make the transition as smooth and reassuring as possible for everyone involved. Whatever brings someone to us, we take the time to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how we can best support them to live well. Our approach is straightforward. Life at Ivy Cottage is shaped by the routines, preferences and personalities of the people who live here. We want everyone to feel at home, not just accommodated. We are pleased to have received a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment of our whole team to providing care that is safe, kind and responsive. We are Snydale Care Home, a care home in Pontefract in Wakefield. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. We also offer respite stays. Because the people living here have very different needs, we plan care one person at a time. What settles somebody with dementia is not what helps somebody managing a long term mental health condition, and we would rather do each properly than run one routine and hope it suits everyone. That means paying attention to detail: how somebody likes to be spoken to, what they can still do for themselves, what makes a bad day and what heads it off. Where sight or hearing loss is part of the picture, small things make an enormous difference. Saying who you are when you come into a room, keeping furniture where it has always been, making sure glasses and hearing aids are clean and working. We treat those as part of the job rather than as extras.

Roop Cottage Residential Home is in Pontefract. We also support some younger adults and people working through problems with alcohol or drugs. That is a wide range, and what holds it together is planning around the individual rather than a house routine everybody has to fit. We find out how somebody wants their day to run, what tends to help when things are difficult and who we should contact, and we treat that as the substance of the care. We want to be open about our position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We are working through the points raised, with attention to record keeping, staff supervision and the consistency of care planning, and we would rather set that out ourselves and answer your questions than have you find it elsewhere. Hemsworth Park is a residential care home in Pontefract. We care for older people and younger adults, including residents living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions and people with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays. As a residential setting our work is daily life supported well, with general practitioners, district nurses and other community professionals involved when they are needed. What we aim for is a house where people are known rather than managed, which sounds obvious and takes discipline because the pressures of a rota pull the other way. It means unrushed help with washing and dressing, medication given reliably, food worth looking forward to and staff who notice when a resident is quieter than usual. For people living with dementia we keep the routine predictable and the faces familiar. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would rather set that out here than have a family come across it later. There is an agreed plan for the areas identified, we are working through it, and anyone considering the home should ask us directly what has changed and what has not yet.

The Laurels Residential Home is a care home in Pontefract, in the Wakefield district. The people living here include older people, many of them living with dementia, along with younger adults, people with a physical disability and people with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available. Because our residents need quite different things from us, support is planned with each person rather than run to a single pattern. People keep their own rooms, their own belongings and their own routines, and they decide how much of the day to spend in company and how much on their own. We ask about the small preferences in detail and expect our staff to follow them, since those details are most of what makes a place feel like home. For residents living with dementia, consistency helps more than anything. Familiar staff, routines that change only when there is a reason, and the patience to understand what somebody means when words have become unreliable. Where people have sight or hearing loss we take particular care over how we communicate, so that nobody is left out of what is going on around them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We take it as evidence that the everyday work is being done properly and we keep looking at the detail. If you are considering a care home in this area for someone close to you, you are welcome to visit, meet our staff and residents and ask us anything you like.

Stockingate Residential Home in Pontefract is a care home for older people who need help with daily living, including many people living with dementia. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Our everyday work is the ordinary business of a household run well. Help with washing, dressing and moving about at the person's own pace and as privately as possible. Medication managed properly. Meals cooked here with real choice. Rooms that people make their own with their own furniture and pictures. With dementia we lean on knowing somebody well, gathering their history with their family, and keeping the shape of the day predictable. We should be open about where we stand. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us requires improvement overall. We did not dispute what was found. Since then we have strengthened staffing and supervision, tightened how we manage medicines and the records we keep, and had senior staff check the care actually being given rather than the care described on paper. That work continues and we are not going to claim otherwise. We would far rather raise this ourselves and answer questions honestly than leave a family to find it out later. Anyone considering the home is welcome to visit, see how things are now, talk to the people who live here, and ask us anything at all.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Pontefract
Dementia changes what a good home looks like. Meals, laundry and a clean room still matter, but what counts far more is how staff behave when someone is anxious, repeating themselves or trying to go home. That is the lens to use across the 13 homes listed here.
What residential dementia registration covers
Every provider on this page is registered for residential care, which means accommodation with personal care: help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and moving about, delivered by staff who should be trained in supporting memory loss. It does not extend to clinical tasks needing a qualified nurse on the premises. Ask each home what stage of dementia it can support and what would prompt it to say it could no longer meet someone's needs, because a second move is difficult for everyone involved.
Reading the inspection record
Eight of these homes are rated Good, three have been told they require improvement, and one is yet to be rated. Open the full report rather than the headline word. Each inspection answers five questions, covering whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and where dementia is concerned the caring and responsive sections repay the closest reading. Where a home requires improvement, the report says precisely what the concerns were and when inspectors found them.
What a visit reveals
Go late in the afternoon if you can, because restlessness shows then rather than mid morning. Watch how staff handle a question asked for the fourth time, whether they come down to eye level, and whether they redirect rather than correct. Notice whether corridors are easy to follow, whether bedroom doors are recognisable, and whether residents can move about safely without being shadowed. Homes such as Millfields Residential Care Home, Carleton Court Care Home and The Laurels Residential Home appear here alongside others, and none of this appears in a rating.
Choosing between dementia care homes in Pontefract
Because dementia needs rarely stand still, the financial side is harder to plan than a straightforward residential move. Knowing the order in which assessments happen gives a family room to choose rather than simply react to events.
Asking for a care needs assessment
Any adult who appears to need care and support can request a care needs assessment, and a relative providing that care can ask for a separate carer's assessment in their own right. Both are arranged through Wakefield Metropolitan District Council adult social care, the authority responsible for assessing need and for arranging funded support where someone qualifies. Ask that the assessment records orientation, communication and risk as well as help with daily tasks, since those are what establish whether a dementia placement is needed at all.
Who contributes, and how much
Where eligible needs are identified, a financial assessment considers income and capital. Savings above the upper threshold mean the placement is funded privately; below it, the authority contributes and the resident pays an assessed share out of income. Where someone no longer has capacity to manage money, ask the team about the arrangements that let a relative act on their behalf, because families frequently get held up at exactly that point.
What the weekly fee covers
Residential fees are charged weekly and normally cover the room, all meals, laundry and personal care. Rates differ between homes in Pontefract, and some charge more where a resident needs closer supervision. Ask each shortlisted home for a written breakdown, and ask what would happen to the fee, and to the placement, if needs increased significantly.
Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Pontefract
How many dementia care homes are there in Pontefract?
Pontefract has 13 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 30 CQC registered care homes in Pontefract: 7 Good, 4 Requires improvement, 2 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.
Which dementia care homes in Pontefract were inspected most recently?
Snydale Care Home (23 June 2026), Stella House Residential Care Home (18 March 2026) and Stockingate Residential Home (23 February 2026) have the most recent CQC reports.
Which providers in Pontefract offer dementia care?
13 residential care homes in Pontefract are listed on this page, and each holds registration with the Care Quality Commission. They include Millfields Residential Care Home, Snydale Care Home, Carleton Court Care Home and The Laurels Residential Home, alongside further homes across the area. What each is able to support varies, so ask directly about the stage of dementia a home can manage. Each profile sets out the registration details and the most recent inspection outcome.
What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Pontefract?
Ask what dementia training staff receive and how often it is refreshed, and ask how they respond when a resident becomes distressed or tries to leave. Check how many staff are on duty in the late afternoon and overnight, and how consistently the same carers work with the same residents. Ask how the home involves families in reviewing care and what it does to preserve familiar routines. Finally, ask what would prompt the home to say it could no longer meet someone's needs.
What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?
A dementia care home is registered to provide accommodation with personal care, covering help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and daily support from staff trained in dementia care. A dementia nursing home holds a further registration requiring a qualified nurse on duty, so it can also manage clinical needs such as complex wound care or feeding tubes. Every provider listed on this page is registered for residential care rather than nursing. If nursing input is needed on site, the search should be widened to nursing registered homes.
Can Wakefield Metropolitan District Council fund a dementia care home placement?
It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows that income and capital fall below the relevant thresholds. Wakefield Metropolitan District Council is the authority responsible for carrying out both assessments and for arranging any funded support that follows. Where savings sit above the upper threshold the placement is funded privately, although the team can still explain the options available. Where someone lacks capacity to manage their finances, ask about the arrangements that allow a relative to act for them.
How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Pontefract?
Contact the adult social care team at Wakefield Metropolitan District Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which any adult who appears to need care and support is entitled to request. The request can come from the person themselves, or from a relative, GP or memory clinic acting on their behalf. Where dementia is involved, ask that the assessment covers orientation, communication and risk as well as help with daily tasks. A financial assessment then follows to establish who pays what.
How far ahead should I start looking for a dementia care home in Pontefract?
Starting before a move becomes urgent matters particularly with dementia, because a calm decision is far easier on the person moving than a rushed one. Visiting several homes over a few months gives a much clearer sense of how each manages memory loss day to day. Both the needs assessment and the financial assessment take weeks rather than days to complete. Urgent placements can be arranged after a hospital admission, though the choice available is considerably narrower.
