    • Care Home

Firth House is a care home in Selby, North Yorkshire. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we support a number of younger adults too. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Selby is a working town with an abbey in the middle of it, and the home belongs to that town rather than sitting apart from it. People who live here go to the shops, to church, to the market. Families drop in on their way past. That ordinariness is deliberate, because the thing most people fear about moving into care is not the care but the disappearance. Practically, we help with washing and dressing, medicines, meals, mobility and everything else that has become difficult. We are serious about food, which is not a small point. A plate of something hot that somebody actually wants to eat does more for a person's week than a laminated activity schedule. Where residents have dementia we keep life predictable and calm, we learn individual histories properly, and we accept that some days will be harder than others without treating that as a failure. We ask families to stay involved and to tell us when something is not right. Small complaints caught early are the cheapest kind to fix. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit without an appointment, and we would honestly prefer it.

    • Care Home

Tawny Lodge is a residential care home in Selby, North Yorkshire. We support older people and younger adults, and we offer both permanent places and respite stays for those needing care for a short period or whose family carer needs a break. The people who live here need a wide range of help. Many need support with personal care, mobility, medication and meals. A number are living with dementia, and for them we keep the day familiar, keep the same staff around and take the time that is needed rather than the time that is convenient. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, where predictable routines and clear information given in good time make a real difference. We support people with physical disabilities, thinking carefully about equipment, seating and access, and people living with sight or hearing loss, where how we announce ourselves and share information matters a great deal. We try to keep the place feeling like a home rather than an institution. Food is cooked here, people are asked what they would like, there is somewhere quiet as well as somewhere sociable, and nobody is required to join in. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please arrange to visit and see for yourself.

    • Care Home

Carentan House is a residential care home in Selby for older people, including those living with dementia. We are not a nursing home, so what we do well is personal care, a settled daily rhythm and knowing everybody who lives here as a person rather than a set of needs. We help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and anything else that has become difficult, at the pace of the person rather than the pace of a rota. Residents decide when they get up and go to bed, where they sit, what they eat and whether they want company or a quiet afternoon on their own. For residents living with dementia we keep the surroundings familiar and the staff consistent, explain what is happening as we go and try to work out what is behind a change in mood instead of treating it as a symptom. Families usually know a person better than any assessment, and what they tell us shapes how we work. Mealtimes matter here. Food is cooked on the premises, we ask people what they actually fancy and nobody is hurried along. Respite stays are available, whether to give a family carer a break, to help somebody build strength back up after illness or to let a person see what living here is like before a longer decision. You are welcome to visit and ask us anything.

We are Westwood Care Home in Selby, North Yorkshire. We provide residential care for older people, including those living with dementia, and we take respite bookings for shorter stays. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement, and we are not going to write around it. We have looked closely at what the inspection found, changed how care is planned, recorded and reviewed, and strengthened the training and supervision of our staff. Our progress is being monitored, and we tell relatives the same things we tell the regulator. What we are working to protect while we do that is ordinary life here. People arrive with their own furniture, pictures and habits, and those come first. What time you wake, where you take your breakfast, whether you feel sociable today or would rather sit quietly: those remain your decisions. For people living with dementia, the useful work is in the detail, knowing somebody's history and the work they did, recognising early what tends to unsettle them, and going at their pace rather than the rota's. If you are considering Westwood for someone, please come and see us and ask about the rating directly. We would rather answer that fully than have it hanging over the conversation.

We support older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people with mental health needs and people living with a physical disability, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We have worked through what the inspection found, changed how we do things and tightened how we check that those changes are holding. Personal care given with patience and privacy. Staff who stay long enough to know that one person needs quiet in the morning and another wants company. Medicines and health needs handled properly, with local health professionals involved when something changes. Families matter to us and we would far rather hear a concern the first time it occurs to you than months later. We will tell you what we are doing about it. • Care Home

Abbey Lea Care Home is a residential home in Selby, North Yorkshire. We provide care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. We are a residential home rather than a large institution, and the day here belongs to the people living in it. Some like an early start, the paper and a bit of company; others prefer a slow morning and a quiet afternoon. Our part is to make either possible, and to help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and getting about in a way that supports independence rather than replacing it. Dementia care is central to our work. We take time to learn each person's history, habits and the things that reassure them, because that knowledge is what lets staff respond to the feeling behind a difficult moment rather than simply react to the behaviour. Familiar faces, a calm environment and a predictable rhythm do a great deal of the rest, and families often tell us it is the ordinary details that matter most. Respite stays are properly planned and given the same attention as any other admission, whether they are giving a family carer a real break or supporting somebody after a spell in hospital. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good, which we take as a foundation rather than a finishing line. You are welcome to visit Abbey Lea and see the home on an ordinary day.

    • Care Home

Here at Hambleton Court Care Home in Selby, North Yorkshire, we provide residential and dementia care for older people, along with respite care for those who need a shorter stay with us. We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that lightly. Our team works hard to make sure that every person who comes through our doors feels genuinely at home, not just looked after. We take time to get to know each resident as an individual, learning about their history, their preferences and the small things that matter most to them day to day. Our dementia care is something we put a great deal of thought into. We know that living with dementia affects not just the person themselves but the whole family around them, and we aim to provide an environment where residents feel safe, calm and familiar with their surroundings. Our staff are trained to support people at different stages of dementia with patience and understanding. For those who need a shorter stay, whether to recover after a period in hospital or to give a family carer a break, our respite care offers the same standard of support as our long term residential care. We want every stay, however brief, to be a positive experience. We are open about the fact that our most recent CQC inspection rated us as requiring improvement. We have taken that feedback seriously and there is work ongoing to address the areas identified. We believe in being honest with families about where we are and what we are doing to move forward. If you would like to visit us and see the home for yourself, we would genuinely welcome that conversation.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Selby

Where to begin

What can be funded often decides which homes are worth visiting, so the money question belongs at the start rather than the end. The first step is a care needs assessment, which North Yorkshire Council has a duty to provide to anyone who appears to need care and support. There is no charge and no means test for the assessment, a relative can request it on someone's behalf, and a GP, district nurse or hospital discharge team can refer. The written outcome sets out which needs are eligible and is worth having even where a family expects to pay the fees itself.

What the council contributes

A financial assessment follows, placing capital and income against the national thresholds. Below the upper capital limit the council pays part of the weekly fee while the resident contributes an assessed amount from income and savings; above it the placement is self funded, though the council can still be asked to arrange it. A relative giving regular unpaid support can request a carer's assessment at the same time, which sometimes brings practical help that has nothing to do with the placement.

Fees worth pinning down

Dementia care generally costs more than standard residential care, as staffing levels and specialist training are higher. Ask each home for a written fee schedule showing what the weekly figure includes and what is charged separately, and establish what would happen if savings fell to the threshold partway through a stay. Ask too whether the home accepts council funded residents, since that answer can remove options before a visit is wasted.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Selby

What residential registration covers

All eight providers listed here are residential care homes, registered for personal care and everyday support: help with washing and dressing, meals, prompting for medication, company and a dependable routine. Nursing reaches residents through visiting district nurses and their own GP. Where swallowing difficulties, wound care or an unstable physical condition already shape the picture, nursing registered homes are the comparison to make instead.

Taking the split ratings seriously

Five of these homes are rated Good by the Care Quality Commission and three have been judged as requiring improvement, which is a meaningful split in a field of only eight. Requires improvement covers a wide span in practice, from records kept poorly through to concerns about staffing overnight, and only the report itself tells you which. Look at the findings on whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and note the inspection date, since an older judgement may describe a home now differently managed.

Judging a home in person

Visit in the late afternoon if you can, when tiredness and confusion build and a home is least polished. Watch whether staff come into view before speaking and use people's names, whether anyone is calling out unanswered, and whether there is real occupation beyond a television left running. Ask the manager how the team handles a resident who insists on going home, and listen for a specific account rather than a reassuring phrase.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Selby

How many dementia care homes are there in Selby?

Selby has 8 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 12 CQC registered care homes in Selby: 5 Good, 3 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Selby were inspected most recently?

Denison House Care Home (15 October 2024), Abbey Lea Care Home (8 March 2024) and Westwood Care Home (15 October 2022) have the most recent CQC reports.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Selby?

Contact the adult social care team at North Yorkshire Council and ask for a care needs assessment, which anyone appearing to need care and support is entitled to request. A GP, district nurse or hospital discharge team can also refer, and a family member may make the request on someone's behalf. The assessment is free and carries no means test, and it results in a written record of eligible needs. Ask for a carer's assessment at the same time where a relative provides regular unpaid support.

Can North Yorkshire Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows capital below the national upper threshold. The council then meets part of the weekly fee and the resident pays an assessed contribution from income and savings. Above that threshold the placement is funded privately, although the council can still be asked to arrange it. If nursing care becomes part of the package, NHS funded nursing care may cover the nursing element separately.

Which providers in Selby offer dementia care?

Eight residential care homes in Selby match this search for dementia care, and each is listed above with its own profile. All are registered for personal care and daily support rather than nursing on the premises. Five hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and three have been asked to make improvements. Opening a profile shows that home's registration details alongside its inspection history.

How does a dementia care home differ from a dementia nursing home?

A residential dementia care home provides personal care, supervision and support with daily living from trained care staff. Nursing needs are met there by visiting community health professionals rather than staff the home employs. A dementia nursing home keeps registered nurses on duty around the clock and is registered to deliver clinical care itself, which suits people with complex or unstable health conditions. All eight providers matching this search in Selby are residential care homes, so continuous nursing input means comparing nursing registered homes instead.

How early should we start looking at dementia care in Selby?

With only eight homes matching this search and three of them currently requiring improvement, the practical choice may be narrower than the total suggests, so starting early matters here. Two or three months of lead time allows visits, a careful read of the reports and an unhurried conversation about fees. Where a hospital discharge or a carer's own illness forces the timing, say so when requesting the assessment, as urgent cases are handled differently. Even under pressure, read the latest inspection report before agreeing to a placement.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Selby?

Ask how many staff are rostered overnight as well as by day, and how long the present team has been in post. Ask what dementia training the staff have completed and who leads on it within the home. Find out how the team responds when a resident becomes distressed, refuses personal care or tries to leave, and ask for a real example rather than the policy. Where a home has been asked to improve, ask directly what has changed since the inspection and what evidence there is of it.
