About Firth House
Firth House is a care home in Selby, North Yorkshire. We provide residential care for older people, including people living with dementia, and we support a number of younger adults too. Short respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Selby is a working town with an abbey in the middle of it, and the home belongs to that town rather than sitting apart from it. People who live here go to the shops, to church, to the market. Families drop in on their way past. That ordinariness is deliberate, because the thing most people fear about moving into care is not the care but the disappearance. Practically, we help with washing and dressing, medicines, meals, mobility and everything else that has become difficult. We are serious about food, which is not a small point. A plate of something hot that somebody actually wants to eat does more for a person's week than a laminated activity schedule. Where residents have dementia we keep life predictable and calm, we learn individual histories properly, and we accept that some days will be harder than others without treating that as a failure. We ask families to stay involved and to tell us when something is not right. Small complaints caught early are the cheapest kind to fix. Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are welcome to visit without an appointment, and we would honestly prefer it.
