    • Care Home

Ferrol Lodge is a residential care home in Sale, Trafford, caring for older people, including many living with dementia. Dementia care rewards attention to small things. Knowing that somebody takes their tea strong, that another person wants the curtains open before anything else happens, that a particular song settles a difficult hour. None of that is dramatic and all of it is what makes a day go well. We write these things down, we pass them between shifts, and we keep asking families to tell us more, because they have known the person far longer than we have. We work with the reality a person is in rather than correcting it repeatedly. Somebody who is looking for a parent who died decades ago is usually not asking a factual question, and answering as though they were is rarely kind or effective. What helps is knowing enough about their life to understand what the worry is really about. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Visitors are welcome.

    • Care Home

Oakfield Croft is a residential care home in Sale, Trafford. We care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and adults with physical disabilities, and we take respite bookings for people who need a stay of a few weeks. We keep this a home rather than a facility. Rooms belong to the people in them, with their own furniture and pictures. The day runs at the pace of those living here, there is company and activity for anybody who wants it and a quiet corner for anybody who does not, and the food is meant to be enjoyed rather than got through. For people living with dementia, consistency does most of the good. Familiar faces, a predictable routine, calm surroundings and time given rather than rushed. We learn about people's earlier lives so conversation has somewhere to go. Where somebody with a physical disability wants to keep doing things for themselves, we make sure equipment and layout help rather than hinder. Our staff know the people living here, which is how a change in health gets noticed early and taken to the GP or district nurse promptly. We have not yet had a full inspection under our current registration, so we would encourage anyone considering us to visit, look closely and ask whatever they want. Families in Trafford are welcome to ring and arrange a time.

    • Care Home

We are a residential care home in Sale supporting older people and younger adults who need help with daily living, including those living with dementia, people with mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people with loss of sight or hearing. Supporting that range means paying attention to individuals rather than to categories. Some of the people here need a good deal of help with personal care, medication and moving about. Others need much less of that and a great deal more support with everything else: keeping to arrangements, managing anxiety, getting out of the house and having staff who know when to step in and when to leave well alone. Residents keep their own rooms, belongings and routines as far as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to be part of whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something different. Where somebody is living with dementia we spend time learning their history and habits, because knowing the person is what settles them when they are frightened. Family and friends are welcome whenever they wish to come. Respite stays are available as well as permanent places. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Please come and look round and ask us whatever you need to.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Sale

With a short list of homes, the funding question tends to shape the outcome more than the choice does. A care needs assessment is free, can be requested by anyone and establishes whether residential dementia care is the right level of support. Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council is responsible for that assessment and the financial assessment that follows, and a carer living with the person may request a separate assessment of their own needs.

How the means test is applied

Savings, income and, in a permanent placement, usually the value of a property are measured against the national capital thresholds. Capital above the upper threshold means fees are met privately. Below the lower threshold only income is counted, with a weekly personal allowance protected, and a deferred payment arrangement can postpone the sale of a house.

Costs and the allowances worth claiming

Residential dementia care is priced below nursing care because the support is personal rather than clinical. Attendance allowance and the daily living part of personal independence payment are not means tested, and anyone paying their own fees should check both. Where a council contribution falls short of a home's private rate, establish in writing whether a third party payment is expected and who would be liable for it.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Sale

Mayfield Care Home and Ferrol Lodge are each rated Good. Oakfield Croft has no published rating as yet, which points to a home not inspected since registration rather than to any finding against it. With only three homes covering the area, availability may narrow the choice further, so ask about vacancies at the same time as everything else.

Reading what is and is not there

A Good rating covers whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and the caring and responsive sections speak most directly to how a resident with dementia is treated day to day. Where no report exists, there is nothing to read, so the questions have to do the work instead: who the registered manager is, how long the team has been in place and what dementia training they have completed.

What to notice on a visit

Watch whether residents are occupied or simply seated, and ask what happens when someone becomes distressed in the evening. Ask how the home supports a resident who walks frequently and whether the garden is secure and used. Ask too what would happen if needs progressed beyond what the home is registered to provide.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Sale

How many dementia care homes are there in Sale?

Sale has 4 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 14 CQC registered care homes in Sale: 3 Good, 1 not yet rated. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Sale were inspected most recently?

Ferrol Lodge (27 July 2026), Ashlands Manor Care Home (8 February 2024) and Mayfield Care Home (25 December 2019) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care placement?

Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council can fund or part fund a placement where the needs assessment confirms residential dementia care is appropriate and the financial assessment shows capital below the upper threshold. Anyone above that threshold meets the fees privately, although the needs assessment is still worth having on record. A deferred payment agreement may be possible where most of the capital is tied up in a property. Where the council rate sits below a home's fee, ask in writing who would cover the difference.

How is a care needs assessment arranged in Sale?

Ask Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council for an adult social care needs assessment, which anyone can request, including a relative acting with the person's consent. There is no charge and the outcome does not depend on income or savings. An assessor will look at memory, daily living, mobility, medication and night time needs before recommending a level of care. A carer can also ask for a separate carer's assessment in their own right.

How far ahead should a family begin looking?

Begin early even where a move still feels some way off, because dementia progresses unevenly and the decision often arrives sooner than expected. Six to eight weeks allows for repeat visits, a careful read of the reports and a settled funding position. With only three homes covering the area, availability rather than preference may end up deciding, so knowing your order of preference in advance helps. A crisis admission rarely allows that kind of preparation.

Which homes in Sale provide dementia care?

Three residential care homes covering Sale are registered to support people living with dementia: Oakfield Croft, Mayfield Care Home and Ferrol Lodge. Mayfield Care Home and Ferrol Lodge are rated Good by the Care Quality Commission. Oakfield Croft does not have a published rating at present. Each profile links through to the inspection report behind its rating where one exists.

What should be asked when visiting a dementia care home in Sale?

Ask what proportion of staff hold dementia training and how often it is refreshed, and ask about turnover, since familiar faces matter to someone with memory loss. Ask how the home responds to distress or agitation and whether any restrictive practice is used. Visit at a mealtime and watch how residents needing help to eat are supported. Where a home has no published rating, ask who the registered manager is and how long the team has been in place.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

A dementia care home provides residential personal care, meaning help with washing, dressing, meals, prompting medication and supervision day and night. A dementia nursing home adds registered nurses on duty at all hours and can therefore manage clinical needs such as wound care, tube feeding or palliative nursing. Many people live well in residential dementia care for years and only need nursing care later. All 4 homes listed for Sale are residential rather than nursing.
