    • Care Home

Bracken House is a residential care home in Burntwood, Staffordshire. We look after older people who need support with everyday living, and we also support younger adults, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. The mix of people we support is wide, and it means we plan around the individual rather than the category. What does somebody need, what can they still do perfectly well for themselves, and what do they want their day to look like. For residents living with dementia, familiar surroundings, unhurried staff and a predictable day do more good than anything else we could offer. Residents bring their own belongings, keep their own routines, choose how they spend their time and see visitors when they like. Respite stays are available alongside permanent places. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is requires improvement. We would sooner say so ourselves than leave you to find it elsewhere. We know which areas were identified, we have an improvement plan in place and we are working through it with our staff team. Ask us about it directly and we will give you a straight answer. The only real way to judge a home is to walk through it. Please come at a time that suits you and talk to residents and their families.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Burntwood

What the registration covers

Dementia care in a residential setting is about more than supervision. It depends on a building and a routine that still make sense to someone whose memory no longer holds the thread. The one provider listed for Burntwood, Bracken House, is registered with the Care Quality Commission as a residential care home, which means accommodation together with personal care such as help with washing, dressing, medication and meals, rather than nursing delivered on site by qualified nurses.

What to check, given the current rating

Bracken House is rated Requires Improvement. That is a reason to read the inspection report closely rather than an automatic refusal, because such findings frequently concern record keeping, staffing levels or management oversight, and a home may already have acted on them. Ask the manager what has changed since the inspection and what evidence they can show you. Then ask the questions that matter most in dementia care: what training staff receive, how the afternoon and early evening are occupied, what happens when a resident becomes distressed, and whether the layout lets people find their own room unaided. As this is the only registered home in the town, look at neighbouring areas in parallel.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Burntwood

The care needs assessment

Anyone who appears to need care and support can ask for a free care needs assessment, whatever their savings. The duty rests with Staffordshire County Council adult social care, which establishes what help is required, whether the eligibility criteria are met, and what funded support follows. A relative providing regular unpaid care can request a carer's assessment of their own.

Meeting the cost

Dementia care is often charged at a higher rate because of the staffing it requires, so ask for a written breakdown of the fee. Where capital falls below the national threshold the council may contribute; above it the place is normally funded privately. NHS continuing healthcare is assessed separately where the need is mainly a health one.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Burntwood

How many dementia care homes are there in Burntwood?

Burntwood has 1 CQC registered care home that is registered for dementia care, out of 4 CQC registered care homes in Burntwood: 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which homes in Burntwood provide dementia care?

One residential care home registered with the Care Quality Commission appears in this Burntwood listing, and that is Bracken House. It currently holds a Requires Improvement rating. The home has its own profile on Care Assura setting out its registration and the detail of that judgement. Because this reflects current registration data for the area rather than any gap in the directory, it is worth widening the search to neighbouring towns.

What should I ask when visiting a dementia care home in Burntwood?

Ask what dementia training the staff receive, how often it is refreshed, and how long most of the team have worked there, since familiar faces reduce confusion. Find out how the day is structured, what happens in the late afternoon, and how the home responds when a resident becomes distressed or wants to leave. Given the current rating, ask specifically what has changed since the inspection and what evidence supports it. Request the contract and the complaints procedure in writing before you commit.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a nursing home?

A residential care home registered for dementia provides accommodation with personal care, so staff help with washing, dressing, medication, meals and daily routines, with training geared to memory loss. A nursing home holds a registration requiring qualified nurses on site, which lets it manage clinical needs such as complex wounds, tube feeding or unstable conditions alongside dementia. The provider in this Burntwood listing is registered as a residential care home rather than a nursing home. If nursing input is likely as the condition advances, look at nursing registered homes from the outset.

Can Staffordshire County Council fund a dementia care placement?

It can, where the care needs assessment identifies eligible needs and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. Contributions are calculated individually, and most people pay something towards fees from income such as pensions. Above the threshold a placement is usually funded privately, although a deferred payment arrangement secured against a property is sometimes possible. Request both assessments early, because arranging them takes time.

How do I arrange a care needs assessment in Burntwood?

Contact the adult social care team at Staffordshire County Council, which has a legal duty to assess anyone who appears to need care and support whatever their finances. The request can come from the person themselves, from a relative, or from a professional such as a memory clinic, general practitioner or hospital discharge coordinator. An assessor will discuss daily tasks, memory, safety at home and the support already in place, then explain which needs are eligible. Ask for the outcome and the support plan in writing, as both help when approaching homes.

How soon should we start looking at dementia care?

Start earlier than feels necessary, because dementia progresses unevenly and a suitable home may have a waiting list. With only one home registered in the town, allowing extra time to look at neighbouring areas is particularly important here. Looking while the person can still take part in the decision also means their own preferences shape the outcome. If a crisis or a hospital stay forces the pace, a shortlist prepared in advance makes an enormous difference.
