About Birch Heath Lodge
Birch Heath Lodge is a nursing home in Chester, providing nursing care for older people and younger adults across Cheshire West and Chester, including many people living with dementia. Having qualified nurses on site at all hours is what allows us to look after people whose health needs are substantial and liable to change quickly. Medication, wound care, careful attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and the close monitoring that catches deterioration early are the ordinary content of our days rather than exceptional events. For families worn down by a run of hospital admissions, the end of that cycle is usually the first change they notice. Dementia nursing is most of what we do. People living with advanced dementia are often assumed to have stopped noticing, and in our experience that is simply wrong. Tone of voice registers. Being rushed registers. A familiar face registers. So we protect continuity of staffing, we talk to people rather than about them, and we take the time to learn what soothes a particular person when they are frightened. We support younger adults as well as older people, and we are alert to the risk of running a home that quietly assumes everybody is elderly. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. The most useful thing you can do is visit, speak to the nurses on duty, and ask how we handle the difficult nights as well as the straightforward afternoons.

More about the care at Birch Heath Lodge
Nursing Care at Birch Heath Lodge
Health needs that are substantial and liable to change quickly are what this home says its nursing registration is for. In practice that means medication, wound care, careful attention to nutrition, pain and skin, and monitoring close enough to catch deterioration early. Families worn down by a run of hospital admissions usually notice the end of that cycle first, which is the honest case for nursing care over residential. Where a resident is assessed as needing nursing, the NHS pays about £235 a week towards it under NHS Funded Nursing Care. Ask whether that assessment has been requested and how the remaining fee compares with the £800 to £980 Cheshire West and Chester usually pays.
Dementia Care at Birch Heath Lodge
Dementia nursing is most of what happens here, by the home's own account, which is worth knowing before setting Birch Heath Lodge beside a general nursing home. It argues that people with advanced dementia are wrongly assumed to have stopped noticing, and that tone of voice, being rushed and a familiar face all register. Continuity of staffing follows from that, as does taking time to learn what soothes a particular person when they are frightened. In a home of thirty eight that is at least achievable. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed in the evening. Ask how care changes as dementia reaches its later stages.
Older Person Care at Birch Heath Lodge
Thirty eight places make Birch Heath Lodge one of the smaller nursing homes in Chester, which usually tells in how quickly staff learn a person's habits. For an older resident the day is help with washing and dressing, medication given on time, meals, and someone who talks to them rather than about them. The home names that last point itself, along with protecting continuity of staffing so that the same faces keep appearing. What it does not describe is the night, and that is where families should press. Ask how many staff are on duty after midnight and how many are registered nurses. Ask who would telephone you if a resident became unwell before morning.
Younger Adults at Birch Heath Lodge
The home says it is alert to the risk of running a place that quietly assumes everybody is elderly, which is an unusual thing to put in writing. For an adult under sixty five with nursing needs that assumption is the main hazard, more than any clinical question. Ask what a younger resident's week actually contains in Chester, and whether anyone near their age lives here now.
