We are a home care agency based in Erith, visiting people in their own homes across the London borough of Bexley and nearby. The people we support are varied. Many are older adults, a good number of them living with dementia. We also support younger adults, people managing a mental health condition, people with a physical disability, and people who are blind, partially sighted, deaf or hard of hearing. Some of the people we visit have needs across several of those at once, which is usually when managing alone stops being possible. Our approach is to start from the household rather than from a menu of tasks. Who else lives there. What they are already doing and how tired they are. What the person can still manage and would be insulted to have taken over. Which bit of the day is the real problem. From that we agree what we will do and when, write it down plainly, and change it when circumstances change. In practice we help with washing and dressing, medicines, meals, housework, shopping, appointments and company, in visits that can run from half an hour to most of a day. We have not yet been through a full inspection by the Care Quality Commission, so there is no overall rating to show you. We would rather say so plainly than talk around it.
