What residential care in Sutton Coldfield involves and what to look for

Moving into a care home is a change of address more than a change of service. Someone keeps their own room and their own belongings, and staff help through the day with washing, dressing, medication, meals and company. That is the thing to keep in view when you walk round a building for the first time.

Making sense of the grades here

Thirteen of these homes hold Good, meaning inspectors found them safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led at their last visit. Four hold Requires Improvement and three have no published rating yet. A grade condenses a great deal into one word, so the report is where the useful detail sits: which area fell short, how serious the finding was, when the inspection happened and what the provider has done since. An older Good carries less weight than a recent one.

Registration and how far a placement stretches

All the providers on this page are registered as residential care homes, offering personal care rather than nursing on site. Community health staff visit for particular tasks, which covers most situations. A continuing clinical need is a different matter and belongs in a nursing registered home. Ask each home what it does when a resident's needs increase and whether anyone has had to move on because of it.

What a visit adds

Book one visit and make the second unannounced, at teatime rather than mid morning. Watch whether people look comfortable and occupied, whether staff speak with residents rather than about them, and how long a call bell rings before anyone comes. Ask how many carers are on overnight, how long the team has been in post, and what happens when someone is unsettled in the small hours.

Getting an assessment and arranging the funding

The assessment of needs

Any adult who appears to need care and support can ask for a free assessment, whatever their income or capital and whether or not they expect to pay privately. A practitioner considers daily living, mobility, medication, nutrition, safety and isolation, then records in writing what support is required. That record guides which homes are suitable and underpins any funding claim, so it is better obtained early than in a crisis. Arrange it through Birmingham City Council adult social care, and ask for a carer's assessment in your own right if you have been providing support at home.

Deciding who pays

A financial assessment then compares capital and income with national thresholds. Above the upper threshold the placement is funded privately. Below it the council pays a share while the resident contributes from income and keeps a protected personal allowance. Where a property is part of the picture, its treatment depends on who else lives there, and a deferred payment agreement may postpone a sale. Ask for the calculation in writing so it can be checked.

What sits behind a weekly fee

Fees differ between homes and between rooms within one home, according to size, outlook and the level of support needed. Ask for a written breakdown of what is covered and what is charged separately, such as hairdressing, chiropody, outings or escorted appointments. Ask when fees are reviewed and what notice is given before an increase.
