    • Care Home

We are Karenza Care Home, a care home in Rowley Regis in Sandwell. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people managing mental health conditions, and we offer respite stays for those who need care for a short while. We plan care one person at a time, because the people living here do not have a single shared set of needs. What helps somebody with dementia feel calm is not what helps somebody managing a long standing mental health condition, and trying to run one routine for everybody tends to suit nobody. So we spend time on detail: how a person likes to be spoken to, what they can still do themselves, what tends to make a difficult day and what heads it off. Dementia care in particular rests on patience and a familiar rhythm. We keep the day recognisable, avoid surprises, and when somebody is distressed we look for the cause rather than simply trying to settle them. Families frequently know exactly what works, and we would much rather be told than find out slowly. People here decide when they get up, what they eat, what they do and who they see. Visitors are welcome at whatever time suits, and we would far rather hear a worry early and directly than have it kept quiet. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. We keep asking residents and relatives where we still need to improve.

    • Care Home

The Beeches Care Home provides residential care in Rowley Regis for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia and people with mental health needs. We also take planned respite stays, which give family carers a rest and let people try us before making any longer decision. Most of what makes a care home work is undramatic. Getting up when you want to, food you actually want to eat, staff who know your name and your habits, and somebody noticing when you are quieter than usual. That is what we concentrate on, and for people living with dementia it matters more than anything else, because familiarity and a calm unhurried approach do more good than any amount of activity. We need to be honest about our inspection position. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was requires improvement. We are not going to present that as a misunderstanding. It reflected real shortfalls, and our manager and staff have been working through them, with tighter arrangements around medicines, clearer record keeping, more training and supervision, and regular internal checks so problems come to light quickly. There is more to do and we will not pretend otherwise. If you are thinking about The Beeches for somebody you love, please come and see us, ask what has changed since the inspection, and speak to residents and relatives while you are here rather than taking our word for it.

    • Care Home

Tendercare Home is a residential care home in Rowley Regis, Sandwell, providing a permanent home for adults who need care and support with everyday life. We aim for a household where people are known properly rather than looked after efficiently. Our care is residential rather than nursing. We help with personal care, medication, meals, mobility and company, bringing in community health professionals when something more clinical is needed. Many of our residents live with dementia, and we rely on the quiet things that genuinely help: familiar staff who know a person's history, a routine that stays where it is, food that is recognisable and reassurance repeated as often as it is wanted. We also support younger adults, and we plan their interests and routines on their own terms rather than folding them into a pattern designed for older residents. Respite stays are available, giving family carers a real break and letting a prospective resident spend time here before any permanent decision. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We would rather be judged on what you see on an ordinary day than on anything we write here, so please visit, speak to the people who live here and ask us the questions that matter to you.

Arranging and funding a dementia care home place in Rowley Regis

Where to begin with assessments

Very little moves quickly without the paperwork, so the assessments are the place to start. An assessment of need is free, open to anyone who may need care, and it records how someone manages medication, meals, washing, orientation and risk at home. Ask Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Adult Social Care for that assessment and for the financial assessment that follows it, which decides whether funded support applies. Where there is a diagnosis, ask for it and the current medication list to be included, as homes rely on that detail.

What a placement costs

Fees are quoted weekly and cover the room, meals, laundry and personal care, with hairdressing, chiropody and outings billed separately. A place in a unit designed around dementia sometimes carries a higher fee, so ask what that buys in staffing and training terms. Where capital sits below the national threshold, the council may contribute after its financial assessment, and above it the place is funded privately. Ask what happens if nursing care becomes necessary, because not every home can support someone through that change.

Choosing between dementia care homes in Rowley Regis

Three homes, two different positions

Tendercare Home Ltd and Karenza Care Home both hold a Good rating, while The Beeches Care Home is rated Requires Improvement. Read that third report in full, note which areas inspectors asked the provider to put right, then ask the manager what has changed and what evidence they can show. In the two Good reports, look at what is said about staffing levels, about support for people who become distressed and about activities for those who cannot follow a group. Check the date of each inspection, since judgements age.

What to check on the visit

Ask what dementia training the staff have completed, how many carers are on duty overnight and how long the team has been together, because familiar faces matter in dementia care. Watch how a repeated question is answered and whether residents are helped to move about rather than seated for long periods. Ask how the home handles disturbed nights, refusal of food and walking with purpose, and whether the garden can be used safely. Visit twice if you can, once by arrangement and once unannounced near a mealtime, when staffing and the mood of a home are easiest to judge. Ask as well how families are kept informed when something changes.

Frequently asked questions about dementia care homes in Rowley Regis

How many dementia care homes are there in Rowley Regis?

Rowley Regis has 3 CQC registered care homes that are registered for dementia care, out of 9 CQC registered care homes in Rowley Regis: 2 Good, 1 Requires improvement. Counts come from the CQC register and are kept up to date as ratings change.

Which dementia care homes in Rowley Regis were inspected most recently?

The Beeches Care Home (31 August 2022), Tendercare Home Ltd (21 October 2021) and Karenza Care Home (8 February 2020) have the most recent CQC reports.

Can Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council fund a dementia care home placement?

It can contribute where the needs assessment shows residential care is required and the financial assessment shows capital below the national threshold. The council pays up to the rate it will meet and the resident contributes from income such as pensions. Above the threshold, the placement is funded privately until savings fall to that level. Where a property is involved, ask about a deferred payment arrangement.

How do we arrange a care needs assessment in Rowley Regis?

Ask Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council for an adult social care needs assessment for the person living with dementia. An assessor will discuss memory, medication, mobility, daily routines and safety at home, either on a visit or by telephone. There is no charge and the assessment is not means tested. The written outcome is what homes will want to read before offering a place.

How early should we start looking?

Dementia progresses unevenly, so looking before a move becomes urgent is sensible. Where it can be planned, two or three months allows for the assessment, repeat visits and a funding decision. Rooms suited to dementia care are limited and may not be free in the week you need one. If the move follows a hospital stay, tell the ward and the discharge team early what you are looking for.

Which providers in Rowley Regis offer dementia care?

Three registered care homes match this search: Tendercare Home Ltd, Karenza Care Home and The Beeches Care Home. All three are registered as residential care homes rather than nursing homes. Two hold a Good rating from the Care Quality Commission and one is rated Requires Improvement. Each profile gives the provider details and the current rating.

What should we ask when visiting a dementia care home in Rowley Regis?

Ask what dementia training staff have completed and how many carers are on duty overnight. Ask how the home supports someone who becomes distressed, how disturbed nights are handled and what happens when food is refused. Where a home has been told to improve, ask what has changed since the inspection and what evidence supports it. Finish by asking what the weekly fee includes and what is charged separately.

What is the difference between a dementia care home and a dementia nursing home?

Both look after people living with dementia, but the registrations differ. A care home provides help with daily living from trained care staff, while a nursing home also has a qualified nurse on site at all times for wounds, feeding tubes, injections and unstable conditions. The three homes listed here are registered for residential care. If nursing needs are expected, mention that during the assessment so the right registration is considered.
