About Burrow Down Shortbreaks

Burrow Down Shortbreaks in Torquay provides short break and respite stays for autistic adults and adults with a learning disability, including people with physical disabilities, people with sight or hearing loss and younger adults. Short breaks matter for two reasons. They give the person a change of scene, new company and things to do that they choose for themselves, and they give family carers a genuine rest rather than a nominal one. Both are worth doing properly. Because people come to us for days or weeks rather than permanently, preparation is everything. We want to know well in advance what somebody likes and dislikes, how they communicate, what unsettles them, how much warning they need before anything changes and what their routine at home looks like, so that a stay does not feel like being uprooted. We keep the staff team familiar between visits for the same reason. While people are with us they get out to what they enjoy around Torbay, take part in the running of the house as much as they want to, and have their own space when they need it. We should be open about our regulator. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission found that we require improvement. There is an action plan and we are working through it with the whole team. We are happy to talk any family or referrer through what was found and what has changed since.
